2 REEF BREEZES October 26 th 2018 Ph: Fax: CAPTAIN S CORNER CAPTAIN S CORNER At the Golf NSW Annual Awards Long Reef was a close second in the Metro Club of the year and GM of the year. However, our Peter Donkers took out the Course Superintendent of the Year, great work and well deserved. Pitch Marks on Greens I played late on Wednesday and was disappointed in the number of unrepaired pitch marks on just about all of our greens. Please ensure you check on EVERY green that your pitch mark has been repaired, and may be fix others that inconsiderate members ahead of you didn t do. Northern Peninsula Interclub Challenge (NPIC) This is a match play event for Male Full Playing Members over 65. It is a mid-week event from February to April 2019 where we play Mona Vale, Manly, Cromer, Wakehurst and Bayview. If you have a GA handicap between 6 and 14 and wish to be considered please contact Team Manager Peter Frith. Long Reef Medal and Salver & Senior Medal Medal & Salver Sat 10 th November Senior Medal Mon 26 th Nov Entry forms are available at the office. Men s Championship, A Reserve, B & C Grade Last weekend was a busy one with R2 and the Semi Finals decided. Our youngest ever championship finalist, Kai Komulainen, accounted for Jimmy Little and Tim Cruikshank, both close matches, and is up against previous winner Matt Saad who won against Mitch Bockman and went to the 19 th to account for leading qualifier Jimmy Knox. In A Res Andrew Koch had good wins over Matt Savage, then Dragan Mitrovic (with the VC s help!!) and is up against Simon Couch who accounted for Glen Evans and Corey Battams. Leading qualifier in B Grade, Peter Munro, had a close match against Roland Merhab and then a comfortable win against young Jack Davies. He is up against last year s C Grade champ David Karlsson who accounted for Peter Frith and Jimmy Moore. C Grade has Neil Lucey up against Anthony Papandrea who had good wins respectively over Barry Collins, Sami Gaundar, Greg McHugh and Peter Hensman. Good luck to all the finalists. Final This Sunday 28 October 36 holes AM from 6.52, and PM from Draws are on the Notice Board Major Presentation Sunday 28 October Our annual presentation will follow the final of the Club Champs at approximately All welcome. Those that are receiving a trophy have been invited to attend, please confirm your attendance for catering purposes. Wetlands Update The project is to start in May 2019, however there will be some preliminary work scheduled prior. The first is a balance pipe which is a connection between the current pond and the new pond system. It is an underground pipe which will run under the 4 th and 5 th fairways. There will be some disruption to play as the 5 th will be a par 3 and the 4 th needs to be closed, so the practice chipping green will be used. This will take place in the next couple of weeks when the soil dries out. 3 FROM THE WOMEN The women congratulate Peter Donkers on his award as NSW Course Superintendent. Good luck to the men competing in the finals of the Club Championships this weekend. The women who travelled to Orange to play the annual Duntryleague tournament have had both good golf and great shopping. Results will be published next week. Please note the poster in the Locker Room regarding the collection by Northern Beaches Surf Lifesaving to send to drought-stricken farmers. Thank you if you are able to lend assistance. Angela Brown and Mandy Biffin are still searching for acts for the Christmas concert. Please contact them directly if you have talent to burn. Preparation for the Annual General Meeting and Prize giving is well in hand. The Annual General Meeting will follow our golf and is appointed to commence at 2pm. For 2019 the Committee has decided to reduce their numbers to 6 office bearers. With advances in technology and assistance from the Pro Shop and Administration our roles and workload have greatly reduced. We thank all those who have nominated. Invitations for the Christmas Dinner on December 4 will be distributed in the next fortnight. These will be ed or posted if you do not have computer access. GNSW has released the Grade draw for 2019 and can be viewed on the GNSW website. We have retained our position in Division 3. The competition commences on February 22 and finishes on April 5. The Long Reef Salver will be held on Saturday November 10 th for women with a handicap of G.A 15.8 and under. Entry forms and payment may be made at Reception. 4 RULES WITH GEORGE QUESTION: Sam's ball was in a bunker. Sam walked into the bunker and before playing his ball, he picked up the rake and placed it on the sand about one club-length from his ball without testing the sand. He played his bunker shot but it struck the lip of the bunker and rolled back into the bunker striking the rake. Which of the following is correct? a. Sam is penalised one stroke because his ball struck the rake which he had put there NSW GOLF INDUSTRY AWARDS At the NSW Golf Industry Awards on Monday night our hard-working Peter Donkers won Superintendent of the year. As all golf members would agree, our course is always in terrific condition winter and summer, despite the traffic it receives. Social players and members from other clubs are always full of praise for the condition of the course. Peter and his team are worthy winners. b. Sam is penalised two strokes because his ball struck the rake which he had put there c. Sam incurs no penalty. Welfare Notes: Ian McDonnell, (fondly known as Macca) and a Member for around 27 years, is recuperating after a major operation. Ian will undergo follow up treatment in coming weeks and says he has absolute confidence in the medical staff involved and is glowing in praise for our medical system. He is yet another Member with a wonderfully positive attitude and our very best wishes are with him for a great outcome. One of our former long-term Members, John Lockhart, is undergoing treatment at Mona Vale Hospital Rehabilitation Unit and is always happy to catch up with news from the Club. 5 JUNIOR PENNANTS Round 3 of Junior Pennants saw the team head to Roseville to take on a good Mona Vale team. It was a cold and windy early start for the boys 7am! We knew we were in for a tough day ahead but it was made even tougher with only having five players for the match. So, before we teed off we were already 1 down. Mitchell got us underway and he played really well on his Pennants debut. Falling just short in his match but taking it all the way to the 18 th. After a nervous start he got his game back on track with there being no more than 1 hole in it either way. But for a few errant chips he may well have sneaked the win. Harry was playing an opponent twice his size but as usual it didn t bother him. He got ahead early making good use of the shots given to him. His opponent started to play great golf after the turn but Harry matched him all the way, sinking a 20-foot putt on the 16 th to give him the win. Noah played great golf today and it was evident after the first few holes the win was never in doubt. His opponent tried everything to get into the match even hitting Noah s mum Tammi with a wayward tee shot on the 8 th. It wasn t long after that though that Noah wrapped up the match. Cian didn t get off to a great start and just couldn t find his rhythm and was 3 down after 6. But to his credit he kept hanging in there and got himself back to even with 4 holes to play. He lost his momentum and when he lipped out with a 10-foot putt on the 17 th his match came to an end. Chun-ta also had a slow start but steadied himself to be level after 9 and from there he gained the upper hand to lead by 3 after 13. Hitting greens, he didn t let his opponent back in and took out a 3 and 2 win. Final score 3-3 which was a great result for the boys and fine team performance. Thanks again to Mick Snell for coming down to watch and for his ongoing support. This Sunday we go to Monash to take on the group leaders Roseville. Last Friday was our second Annual Ladies Day with a dedicated competition for the women. With prizes for the best three scores, a dash of rose and a pink ball for everyone the day kicked off in good style. The results were Jan Redfern carried the day with 34 points and her score was good enough to beat the boys in the regular comp as well. Runners up were Sue Telfer on 32 points and Dale Ronald on 29 points. Next week we begin our preparations for the Friday club Christmas hamper. The required number of games to have been played will be determined, following which players can check on their numbers and discuss catch ups if required. On Tuesday 6 th November, we will be holding a 4 Ball Ambrose event with a 7.30am shotgun start. The normal competition fee of $15 applies. Please register yourself or team with reception. The roughs especially are growing quicker than we can cut it but that s good and many areas which were struggling to grow grass are now covering over. Weeds are prolific at the moment especially clover and bindii as soon as we spray areas new areas become infested. Although it seems we have had lots of rain this month in reality we are right on average for the month with 120mm. The new turf area at the start of the 1 st fairway is now back in use and is growing strongly. We have installed irrigation from the end of the path to the start of the fairway so this area will hopefully stay in great condition. We have also brought the fairway back towards the tee about 30m. It will take a few more weeks for the new turf to get used to being cut at fairway height but it will be a big improvement for the area. The new yellow tees at the 4 th & 18 th are also coming along well and are back in play. Good luck to everyone playing in the finals of the club championships especially Dave the hero of the greenkeepers shed. Enjoy the golf.
