2 REEF BREEZES September 28 th 2018 Ph: Fax: FROM THE PRESIDENT LRGC plans to carry out a number of course and clubhouse improvements over the next few years. Two projects are scheduled for 2018/19. The first will be the completion of the wetlands project by creating a 7,000 square metre and 6+ megalitre capacity lake in the location of the recently demolished maintenance shed. This will be the final stage of Thomson Perrett designed pond/wetlands system, designed to capture the storm water run-off to feed the ponds. Previously storm water run-off from the Long Reef/Collaroy areas had created significant problems for Fisherman s Beach with storm water debris and beach gouging impacting on the amenity of the beach and ocean. Over the past 15 years LRGC has invested more than $3 million of its own funds (with some relatively minor grant assistance) in the various stages of storm water diversion infrastructure which feeds the existing pond system and has greatly reduced the LRGC s reliance on town water. The benefits of the new wetlands project include; increasing water storage capacity for the golf course providing greater water selfsufficiency creating additional habitat for a diverse range of fauna including migratory water and shore birds and a variety of other fauna significant increase in flora with the planting of native grasses and plants. Consequential improvements to the golf course as a result of layout changes required to build the Wetlands include; a replacement chipping green and bunker. improved playability of the 4 th and 8 th holes. use of the fill from the Wetlands site to create mounds between the 14 th and 15 th fairways, 15 th and 16 th fairways and at the end of the practice fairway. raise the level of the practice fairway and increase its area. (LRGC is required by Northern Beaches Council to retain and disburse on the course all fill taken from the Wetlands site). The second project is the re-development of the Halfway Kiosk situated aside the 9 th tee. Plans are in place to construct a weather resistant structure. Once completed we will be able to provide year round catering for both golfers and public, point of sales facilities (including use of the LRGC membership card) and an App to alleviate service delays. Both these capital works projects will be funded from revenues generated by the business and from cash reserves. However where possible we will also look for other funding opportunities. We continue to explore and make application for government grants, however success is a lottery. We recently established a facility to accept tax deductible donations via The Australian Sports Foundation (ASF). Many sporting clubs throughout Australia have taken the opportunity to raise much needed funds using this system. The ASF is supported by the Australian Sports Commission and was established by the Australian Government to help community organisations raise funds for development of Australian sport. In addition, the ASF provides support for the Club s projects by helping in taking tax deductible donations. It then refunds these donations back to the Club in the form of grants. The unique advantage is the incentive of tax deductibility for donations. This means that individuals or groups that donate over $2 to help support one of the Club s projects will receive a tax deduction on that donation. We are hopeful that the provision of this facility may encourage members and others to donate funds in support of our capital projects and assist the club to meet its goals. To make a donation please visit our Australian Sports Foundation web site and follow the instructions. Thank you for your kind support. If anyone has any queries they can contact our General Manager, Anthony Dignan at adignan@lrgc.com.au or Stephen Twigg President

6 THE ARCHIVES A Golfing Professional and an "All-Rounders family. As it is the Championship time of year, the framed photos of some of the Club s great Champions are being displayed in the Pro shop. Check out the achievements of Des Lofthouse, Ruby Watts, Gordon Thomson and Dulcie Fouracre in particular, the Club s all-time multiple Champions. September - this is the month we remember Frank Eyre s win in the 1930 Australian Open. Although The Open had been held since 1904, this was the first year that the Stonehaven trophy had been presented. So Frank s name appears on the top of the engraved list. Baron Stonehaven was completing his five years as Governor-General and as an enthusiastic Scottish golfer was keen to donate the trophy. It has been mentioned before in this newsletter that this Open was held in atrocious weather conditions at the New Metropolitan Club in Melbourne. Light weight players were literally blown off their feet and Frank was credited the win, not only because he was used to Links conditions, but because he was a man with a solid build and he could stand tall! He was the only player to break 80 on all four days and finished 7 shots ahead of the rest of the field. Frank receives the Stonehaven Cup 1930 A few years ago, thanks to Betty Twight and Barbara Maladay, the family of Frank was contacted and we got to see the family scrap book, the trophy that Frank was able to keep from that win, and the silver tray that the club gave him when he left the Club after 41 years of service. Along with newspaper articles from a variety of achievements were two newspaper cuttings from the 1940 s which listed achievements on the Rugby field. The Eyre family were all-round sportsmen. The articles come from the Rugby News in 1942 and The Sun Sporting Gallery, which is not dated, but would have been around the same time. Football runs in Eyre blood - a third generation footballer Jack will play in Manly in the Rugby Union premiership grand final against Randwick tomorrow." We know that Frank, (the Club s first Professional) used the title Happy as his trade mark, but it should have really read as Happy mark 2. His father Eddie Eyre (a New Zealander) was the original Happy. He played Rugby Union for Manly and was selected to play for NSW against NZ in 1894 where he scored the winning try. He was equally famous as a surfer and became the first official lifesaver in Australia at Manly beach in Frank grew up in Manly, was a keen swimmer, member of the North Steyne Surf Club, a caddy at the Manly Golf Club and a Manly Rugby player. He too represented NSW at Rugby. It was in the season. He played against Queensland, the AIF, and the All Blacks. By the 1940 s it was Frank s turn to watch his son (Edward John) known as Jack compete at Manly Oval. The Rugby news, explains that this third generation player was to represent Manly Junior Union v Metropolitan. A lad with a football future, and with a very high standard to follow. Jack was tipped to have a future in NSW Rugby -but the war years may have squashed this ambition. We do know that Jack was a member of the Collaroy Surf Club and a member of a Champion junior surf boat crew and served in the Navy on the Shropshire and at intervals had a game with Manly s first fifteen. Frank s sons Jack and Alan became members of Long Reef Golf Club, in 1949 and 1950 and were both pennant players in the '50s. Jack was a member of the Committee from He resigned in Alan left the club in 1961, but not before he won the Foursomes with his brother in Sandra Mellowes Frank s Cup from the 1930 Open win.

We are conducting three clinics over the school holidays and they are a fun way to get your children involved in golf. Monday 8 th October Thursday 11 th October 9am 3pm Open to all kids aged 8-15 $65 per clinic includes morning tea, Lunch and prizes. To book please download the entry form at FROM THE COURSE We have finally received some nice rain over the last week with around 30mm falling over 5 days. This has allowed us to fertilise most of the fairways which hopefully will help with some much-needed recovery. It would be really nice to get some follow up rain which is predicted, maybe a thunderstorm tonight. Last week we completed a revamp of the start of the 1 st fairway which has smoothed the area out and removed the Parramatta grass and uneven surfaces. We have also recently rebuilt the yellow tee boxes on the 4 th & 18 th holes. Both these tees were in very poor condition mainly due to the dry weather, we now have irrigation installed in these areas. A new seat has been installed at the back of the 2 nd tee, a nice place to sit and watch the whales whilst waiting for the golfers. Have a great weekend and good golfing.
