1 March Newsletter 2018 Holes-in-one As always happens after a dry spell of holes-in-one we then have a rash of them as 3 were made in the month of March. Frank Anderson had an ace on the Harcourts sponsored 17th on Thursday the 1 st of March. Frank received $450, as did the WJGC which is kindly sponsored by Harcourts. Needless to say, Frank and the old boys also made short work of the $200 bar tab 2 days later John Strettell then had one on Saturday the 3 rd of March (But unfortunately for John as he was hosting his good lady wife and guests from out of town that day and decided not to enter the competition!!!!..) Then Sharon Thomas had an Ace again on the Harcourts 17th in the Z-Energy Thursday competition on the 15 th of March so Sharon also received the $450 from Harcourts (as did the WJGC) as well as the Bar tab. s

2 BOARD REPORT We continue to work away at the final bits and pieces which need to be completed in connection with the Pro Shop project. The steps from the cart washing area up to the Pro Shop have now been completed with the handrail having been installed and lights mounted on the supporting posts. We are still considering how we can improve the steps up from the practice putting green side. Ian Douglas and the Course Sub-Committee have completed their review of the responses we received from members concerning improvements to the Course and we will release a document outlining future plans shortly. Further discussions are taking place with QLDC concerning our lease and we are hopeful we will be able to finalise this in the near future. Financial Income for February was slightly below Budget and Last Year. This was due to a few days where the weather was not good resulting in lost green fees, F&B income, etc. YTD is tracking slightly below Budget but higher than Last Year. All major income lines are holding up well against Budget at this stage. Expenses for February were slightly above Budget and Last Year. This was mainly in Course expenditure. Overall the Trading Surplus YTD is well above both Budget and Last Year with 2 more big months to come. We welcomed 1687 Green Fee players on our course during the month of March which is an all-time record!!

3 Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic We will host our annual Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic from the 9 th of April to the 13 th of April with our rest day Thursday the 12 th of April. Our course will be closed until around 3.30pm on Monday, 2.30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday and 2pm on the Friday. Thursday the 12 th will be our normal Thursday booking but please note we have a full green fee sheet from 11.30am onwards that day and we expect there will be many members wanting to book in their tee time so get your booking in quick! Centenary Ambrose Time to get your tri-some together for the very popular Centenary Ambrose Tournament which is scheduled for Sunday May the 6th. Nola Pratt donated the trophy which is a significant piece of history as it originally was the Board of her bed head. Millbrook Challenge Our annual challenge against Millbrook will be at Millbrook on ANZAC day. More details to follow but we hope to have as many of our members able to play in this great event which we have yet to win!! Red Tee Day On the last Sunday in April which is the 29 th we will give you the opportunity to play the much shorter Red Tee course. The Red Tee course is all about fun and participation and gives some of you the opportunity to have you best round, shoot your age or both!. Tee off is 11am and cost is the usual $6

4 New Cook After a long search I am delighted to announce we will be enjoying the delights of Diane McKenzie who replaces Tony Linn in our kitchen team. Diane comes to us with many years of cooking and baking experience more recently in Provisions café in Arrowtown but has owned her own café in Invercargill for 14 years. Her official start date is Tuesday the 3 rd of April (yes ladies she will be working Tuesdays). Please take the time to welcome her to the Club and we wish her all the very best in this demanding but rewarding position. 5 PRESIDENTS REPORT Two years ago, the Players committee recommended a change to the way we ran Thursday men s golf over the summer (daylight saving) season from November to March. The change involved members booking their own tee times with results posted on the website rather than rolling up for an 11am start followed by prize-giving. The Board ratified this change and while some members embraced the flexibility of booking their own times, others missed the camaraderie of pre-match banter and post-match prize-giving. The main reason for the change was to accommodate those members who wanted to play in the competition of the day but were not able to play during the designated time from 11am. In other words, it was an attempt to improve participation in member events. In the summer prior to making the change, we had 1073 entries for the men s Thursday field at an average of 49 per day. This increased in the 1 st year of change to 1171 (53 average) and to 1211 (55 average) in the summer just gone. These incremental changes represent a gradual move in the right direction. An added bonus of making this change has seen our Thursday green fee, café and bar revenue for this period increase by $6,149 in year 1 and $11,185 in year 2. 6 WOMEN S REPORT March has been a busy golfing month for us with a team now selected (from their good results) to go to a national event in Alexandra in April Suzanne Vidak, Margaret Carlsson, Jeri Elliot and Marie Wilkinson. Queenstown had good representation at the Arrowtown 2-day Classic Tournament with Jeri Elliot and Sarah Pearson (Arrowtown) the winners, Karen Mitchell & Li Ying Maroney second and Helen Maber and Janet Slater third CONGRATULATIONS. We had the 36-hole Nancy McCormick (another national event) Foursomes which was won by Vivian Todd and Jan Hewitt their names go forward for inclusion with all other results from around the country. Our Pennant Team of Danielle Bailey, Suzanne Vidak, Marie Wilkinson, Karen Mitchell and Sue Cunningham came second (after Arrowtown) on the Arrowtown Course. Unfortunately, our Alma Jack day (annual contest against Arrowtown) had to be cancelled due to rain it will be played on another date during the year. 7 MEN S REPORT Isn t this autumnal golfing weather wonderful? Perfect playing conditions amid our changing landscape of brilliant colour. We re truly living the golfing dream. April is a busy month with the conclusion of our championship programme, pennants and inter club fixtures in full swing and our hosting of the Central Otago Autumn Classic. Club championship finals day is Saturday 7th of April. I hope you will join us for a celebration of our newest champions. We are planning a pairs Ambrose competition for our club field with a great prize table followed by a presentation of trophies to our 2018 winners. Schedule of matches as follows Seniors - Intermediate A - Intermediate B - Junior - Veterans - Simon Boland v Bradley Iles Mark Atkins v Liam Judkins or Darren Hill John McDowell v Kim Wilkinson Jamie Dyce v John Petre Stephen William Potts v John Leith Wakatipu Junior golf are also joining us for their final. Danielle Bailey is playing Sumin Kang over 18 holes to decide their 2018 champion. Go Girls! We are all very proud of your achievements this past year. Good luck to all players and a big thank you to all who turned out this year to create a really competitive event with plenty of close matches. Our Interclub team share the competition lead after 2 rounds. Thanks to Rob Freer for his careful guidance. Our Pennants sides are holding their own in a revised format for Our Senior side is unbeaten, Senior B s are 1 from 2, Our 2 Intermediate sides are competitive in a crowded field and our Juniors have their noses in front at this early stage. Thanks to all captains, selectors & players who have made themselves available and continue to represent our club in good spirit. We join other Central clubs in hosting the Autumn classic the week of 9-13 April. Our course will be closed for that week except for Thursday the12th when we will play normal club competitions. Please remember to book your tee times early for that day as we may be offering reciprocal play to other central clubs. Any reciprocal arrangements elsewhere for Queenstown members will be advised. Let s all welcome our many visitors as we showcase golfing in the basin. Thanks to the many of you who volunteer to help the tournament run smoothly. We resume our Thursday club competition roll ups from 11 o clock on 26th of April. Cards in by please. 10 RULES QUESTIONS LAST WEEK Dave Aced the Hole! On the putting green, if the player s removal of a loose impediment causes the ball to move, the ball is replaced without penalty. THIS WEEK Bobby T is on the edge of number 2 and is chipping his third shot from just off the green. As Bobby plays his shot Bruce Cunningham is on the green and standing right next to the flagstick, not touching the flagstick, but close enough to pull the flag out and get on with putting. Bobby T plays his chip and it hits the flag and drops in the hole. What does Bobby score on the hole?
