MIDDLE ATLANTIC NOTES By '' HAZARD '' The annual competition for the Mary Thayer Farnum Memorial Cup, under the direction of the Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia, was played at St. David's on October 8th and 9th. The entry was rather meagre, owing no doubt to the unsettled weather and the numerous events which had immediately preceded. The contest consists of holes medal play and also determines, in conjunction with the 8 holes of the Qualifying Round of the Women's City Championship, the winner of the Silver Cross. The first day's play was hampered by rain, which did not improve the conditions, for owing to the lateness of the season the course was rather "lumpy." Mrs. Ronald H. Barlow, of Merion, continued her consistently good play in the National and Huntingdon Valley events, and Mrs. C. H. Vanderbeck, of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, who was runner-up to her at Huntingdon Valley, again finished second. The cards: Hole 8 9 out 0 8 in Totals Yards Mrs. Barlow Mrs. Vanderbeck SUMMARY Mrs. Ronald H. Barlow, Merion... Mrs. C. H. D. Peterson, St. Davids... Mrs. Tarbell, St. Davids Miss N. Hallowell, St. Davids Miss Carey, St. Davids The Silver Cross for Women for 909 was won by Mrs. Barlow with a total of 0. Mrs. Fox was second with 8. After the Qualifying Round of the Championship in the Spring at Springhaven, Mrs. Fox had a lead of one stroke over Mrs. Barlow, their scores being 9 and 9 respectively, but Mrs. Barlow's work in the Memorial Cup event gives her the trophy by a large margin. Not long ago Mr. Beverly Potter was exercising one of his bird dogs near the Huntingdon Valley golf course and greatly to his surprise the dog came to a staunch point on the edge of the long hole near the road. A fine covey of quail was flushed by Mr. Potter who had no idea of finding birds in the locality. The writer had almost an identical experience some years ago when walking with one of his dogs over the course at Belfield which is even nearer the city than Huntingdon Valley

Approach to the second green, Whitemarsh Valley. The presence of the birds around Philadelphia is very unusual but the discovery of them on the golf course can but suggest the consternation of some nervous player who chanced to get off the course a bit and in "playing out" was startled by the sudden "whir-r-r" of the covey as it flushed. Mr. E. Satterthwaite, of Riverton, N. J., who, previous to this season, was almost unheard of in the big events; recently had a 8 over his home links. The course at Riverton is a trifle over twenty-seven hundred yards in length and the turf is sandy. Mr. Satterthwaite's card: Total Hole 8 9 Yards Out In 8 On a recent Sabbath morning one of the most dyed-in-the-wool players in these parts was getting together his kit for his customary round, when his small son approached him and for a while gravely regarded the pater's preparations. His elder sister chanced to pass at the moment she was on her way to church and this circumstance prompted the little lad to say: "Father, why is it that you don't go to church like sister does each Sunday?" After recovering from the momentary shock occasioned by this rather leading question, our friend replied: "Well, my boy, I'm not a member of the church but I guess you will find that your Dad's a fairly respectable citizen. He sticks rather close to the office all week and he finds that a Sunday on the links makes him feel very kindly toward his fellowman and that's pretty good religion after all. People regard these things in different lights, my boy now my people have always been good Hicksite Quakers but I am not in entire accord with all of the tenets of that persuasion and consequently I have never joined the church."

The little fellow pondered for a moment and then solved the vexatious question in this sage way. "I'll tell you what, Father, why not join as a playing member?" MOTHER GOOSE ON THE LINKS "It's bad to get a-pulling so, Heigho," say Rowley; Whether I slather 'em lofty or low With a bully pull I'm off in the spinach It's rough!" says Anthony Rowley. He went direct to Geordie Low "What's wrong?" says Rowley; Says George "You're scalping 'em out on the toe No wonder, by thunder, you'll find the spinach." "I'm punk!" says Anthony Rowley. "Open your face a bit," says Low "My face?" says Rowley; "The face of your club, and your stance just so; Now that's fine, down the line, straight by the spinach." "I'm on!" says Anthony Rowley. The annual record of individual play for the season of 909 has just been computed by Secretary Harrison Townsend of the Golf Association of Philadelphia. The Huntingdon Valley Country Club won the Club Record Cup for the season's work of its members the points scored by the men giving them a tremendous advantage over Merion which finished second by reason of the performances of the women. The record: Club Huntingdon Valley Merion Country Club Cricket Club Aronimirk Riverton Wilmington Bala Merchantville Delaware County Woodbury Ridley Park St. Davids Belfield Springhaven Overbrook Whitemarsh Lansdowne Frankford Westchester Camden Men Women Total The annual tournament to determine the woman champion of the Philadelphia Cricket Club was begun at St. Martin's on October th. In the qualifying round Mrs. Caleb Fox and Miss Irene Richardson tied at 9. Mrs. Vanderbeck was third with a 9. A very high wind prevailed throughout the tournament but the scoring was as a rule quite good, Mrs. Vanderbeck negotiating the course in 8 in her match with Miss G. Davies. The final brought together Mrs. Fox and Mrs. Vanderbeck and in the face of a gale Mrs. Fox played a most remarkable game. Out in she turned with a clear lead of holes and eventually won the title by up and to go. Mrs. Fox's play was steadiness itself and although Mrs. Vanderbeck displayed her usual brilliant long game, both with wood and iron, her work on the greens was very uncertain. The golf championship of the Philadelphia Cricket Club was decided on Oct. 0th, when Mr. B. Bartholomew beat Mr. H. G. Kribs, the 908 champion, by one up in thirty-six holes. It would be rather difficult for the general golfer to imagine a very flourishing organization, not only charmingly located in the heart of most attractive country, but possessing a really promising course but a few moments away from a railroad which gives them over a dozen convenient trains each way, every day; discontented because they happen to be as far away from the heart of the city as miles! When you recover from the shock Messrs. Golfer-men of New York, Chicago and wherenot, just let a tear fall and offer a prayer to good

8 old St. Andrew to guide these people aright. The writer has several times enjoyed the hospitality of the Philmont Country Club and after the first visit very candidly confessed surprise because of the general excellence of a course so young it is really very promising. The club house, too, which is quite new, is also most attractive. Imagine my surprise when told by the president of the club that some of the members advocated the abandoning of Philmont and the building of a new course nearer town and Philmont only miles away! When I regained the power of speech after this startling announcement, I raised a feeble voice in protest, and as I talked I noticed a merry twinkle in the eye of Mr. Gimbel and I think that the years to come will find Philmont right where it is now and just as it is now, only a little more so a great happy family of golfers. David Fleming, Jr., who was one of the leading golfers of the old Mount Airy Club, died on November 0th at Hot Springs. Ten years ago Mr. Fleming was regarded as one of the most promising young players in the city and although he never developed his game to the perfection promised by his early form, yet his name appeared very often in local tournament lists and on one occasion he represented the city in the match with Pittsburg. Probably his last appearance in active competition was at Pinehurst two years ago. He was a member of the Whitemarsh Valley and Philadelphia Cricket Clubs. Mr. Harold Naylor, who was also a member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club before he entered the regular United States Army, was married in the West on the very day that his old companion, Mr. Fleming, passed away. Lieutenant Naylor was undoubtedly one of the best young players in the East before his army life prevented a continuance of his play. In the special events scheduled at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in conjunction with the women's club championship, the contests were exceedingly close. Miss Irene Richardson won the approaching and putting event with ten strokes, but only after the playoff with Mrs. Vanderbeck, Miss Disston and Miss G. Davis. Mrs. Vanderbeck won the driving competition with three drives aggregating 88 yards. The following scores resulted in the mixed foursomes: Mrs. Fox annd H. H. Francine Mrs. Vanderbeck and A. W. Tilling hast Miss Richardson and B. Bartholomew Miss Hood and Ira J. Williams Miss G. Davis and M. Williams... Miss Cookman and H. G. Kribs Mrs Patterson and Mac M. Hoopes... Mrs. Gates and C. Cookman Mrs. Orchard and F. Bailey Miss Lorimer and M. McLeod Mrs. Naylor and Mr. Naylor Miss Bowen and C. H. Bowen The golf championship of the University of Pennsylvania was won by Mr. Henry Barrett Heyburn, a sophomore who defeated Mr. H. P. Kirchner, a senior, and the captain of the team. The final of holes was played at Huntingdon Valley and required extra holes to decide. After the morning round Mr. Kirchner had a lead of one hole and when the players teed off at the th the senior was dormie. Mr. Heyburn, however, rose to the occasion and squared the match. The th was halved in and although Mr. Kirchner found the creek on the next, a very accurate approach after dropping gave him the half. Mr.

9 Driving from the third tee, Whitemarsh Valley Country Club. Heyburn drove into the rough on the third extra hole but a magnificent second enabled him to secure a half. The fourth green was reached by both players with irons for the second shots but Mr. Kirchner lost the match and the championship by taking putts. The three preliminary rounds were played over the course at Overbrook. The summary: First Round H. P. Kirchner, '0, defeated W. G. McFarland, '0, by default, P. Burleigh, ', defeated H. T. Canarro, ', and ; A Huston, ', defeated A. L. Kirchner, ', up; G. V. Hastings, Jr., ', defeated Kaufmann, ', and ; H. B. Heyburn, ', defeated B. Honie, '0, and ; H. C. McCall, ', defeated F. H. Muhlenberg, '0, and ; K. F. Blair, ', defeated R. E. Harlow, ', and ; H. C. Legge, '0, defeated Pratt, ', and. Second Round Kirchner defeated Burleigh, and ; Hastings defeated Huston, and ; Heyburn defeated McCall, and ; Legge defeated Blair, and. Semi-final Kirchner defeated Hastings, and ; Heyburn defeated Legge, and. Final Heyburn defeated Kirchner, up, 0 holes. The amateur record of Chevy Chase which formerly stood at, held jointly by Messrs. F. Oden Horstmann, Thomas M. Sherman and Walter J. Travis, has been lowered to by Mr. Walter R. Tuckerman who, on Nov. 0th, recorded the following figures: Out In 8 This score was made in a match when Geo. Sargent, the Open Champion, at Chevy Chase, was playing the best ball of Messrs. Tuckerman and Ellis, Sargent doing a 9 and Mr. Ellis 8. The par of the course is, both ways. Sargent recently came in in. This year the Middle Atlantic Golf Association adopted a new method of

0 team play, providing a handsome trophy to be permanently held by the winner of the year. Each team was to play a home and home match, and the days were arranged so that onehalf the matches would be played in the Spring and one-half in the Fall, the percentage of wins and losses to be counted as in baseball. The matches were concluded October 0, when the Chevy Chase Club team defeated the team from the Lakeside Club, of Richmond, thus giving the trophy to the Chevy Chase Club, which won nine matches and lost one. There were six teams in the contest Wilmington Country Club; Baltimore Country Club; Columbia Golf Club; Lakeside Country Club; Chevy Chase Club, and Bannockburn Club. Last year the Golf Committee of the Baltimore Country Club took the old course into its own hands and stretched it to meet modern requirements. This produced some prodigious kicking from the veterans who had passed the Osier meridian. The day the new course was opened the limits of the teeing ground were marked by the immaculate metal disks now so familiar, and a well-known player of the Old Guard, after a distressing round, thus addressed the Chairman of the Committee: "I don't mind changing the course, but it is an outrage to require a player to tee his ball on a piece of tin six inches in diameter. It is ridiculously small." Mr. J. McC. Trippe won chief honors in the fall tournament of the Baltimore Country Club, beating Mr. E. M. Cromwell by up in the final. Mr. Tyson Ellicott captured the second cup by disposing of Mr. F. Savage by and.
