1 1108 HE AMERICAN GOLFER EASERN PENNSYLVANIA NOES he past month has witnessed great activity in Philadelphia golf circles, but the play of the Open Championship, September 16 and 17, undoubtedly was the most important of the many events. he Whitemarsh Valley Country Club was awarded the meeting and probably the course never has been in better condition. om McNamara, of Boston, won rather easily with a total of 302 for the seventy-two holes, and by the way, this is the first time that the championship has been decided over so long a route. he Association this year increased the prize moneys, and as a consequence a very fine field competed. Crump, Pine Valley Anderson, New London Jervis, Seaview Hunter, Whitemarsh On the 17th, th and 19th of September the Annual ournament for the St. Martin's Cup was given by the Philadelphia Cricket Club, and one of the largest fields in the history of the game in the city turned out. here were two hundred and fifty entries and a comparatively small number of withdrawals, and although a very early start was made in the morning, yet it was necessary for some of the late starters to finish after night-fall; indeed there were some who found it impossible to finish at all. Four sixteens were qualified and in the first flight no less than six Aronimink players were included, and one of them, Mr. Walter Reynolds, easily captured the medal with a fine 75. he scores follow: FIRS SIXEEN S. Wright, Jr., who was in good form, winning both encounters on the 19th hole, one of his victims being Mr. H. H. Francine, who won the Philadelphia Championship this year. A great surprise was furnished when Mr. Reynolds, the medalist, was eliminated by Mr. F. P. Hill, of Stenton. Mr. Hill is one of the veteran players of the city and although his game is remarkably steady, few anticipated that he would be strong enough to defeat the Aronimink player. However, it remained for one of the visitors to win the chief trophy, and Mr. J. N. Stearns, 3d, of the Nassau Country Club, succeeded in doing this after a very close match with Mr. S. I. Jones, of Plymouth. Mr. Jones has been displaying excellent form throughout the year and his consistency has earned him a place on the Pennsylvania team for the Lesley matches. he summary of the play follows: FIRS SIXEEN S. 5 1112 HE AMERICAN GOLFER it remained for Mr. J. M. hompson, of Springhaven to give the better known player a terrific fight in the final, which was carried to an extra hole. On September 5, the annual Pater et Filius ournament of the Golf Association of Philadelphia was played over the course of the Philmont Country Club, and an unusually large entry resulted. Mr. C. B. Webster, paired with his son, Mr. G. S. Webster, of, won the trophy. It is worthy of note that last year Mr. Webster, playing with his eldest son, Mr. C. B. E. Sharwood, of Merion, who finished in the twilight with a capital 79. Eighty-eight was the last score to get a place in the first flight, and two players, Mr. R. M. Wister and Mr. J. R. Deming, the contestants were astonished, for Mr. Deming is one of the strongest players at Whitemarsh. But the wide margin of 7 up and 5 to play left little room for argument. the semi-final Mr. Maxwell won

7 1114 HE AMERICAN GOLFER from the fine Aronimink player, Mr. Walter Reynolds, and although his play fell off somewhat in the final with Mr. Risley, yet it was a good match. Mr. Maxwell started badly and possibly an early lead caused the Atlantic City player to become a trifle overconfident, but Mr. Maxwell stuck gamely to his task and squared matters by winning the tenth and eleventh holes in par figures. Mr. Risley played into the water hazard on the fourteenth, and for the first time his opponent was up since the beginning of the match. After driving into the ditch, going to the fifteenth, Mr. Risley made a wonderful recovery when he placed his second shot within fifteen feet of the cup, which enabled him to halve the hole. he match was carried to the home green, where Mr. Maxwell won by making no mistakes and getting down in par figures. he summary follows: FIRS SIXEEN WHIEMARSH ROPHY First round.
