284 THE AMERICAN GOLFER The following announcement has been issued by the United States Golf Association : To the Members of the United States Golf Association: Your attention is called to Section 8 and Section 21 of the By-Laws of the United States Golf Association which reads as follows : Section 8. "The Executive Committee shall take cognizance of every apparent violation of Section 7 that may come to its attention in any manner whatsoever, it shall exercise absolute discretion in the interpretation and enforcement of the By-Laws for the purpose of safeguarding the best interests of the game of golf and shall have power to inflict such penalties as the circumstances of each case may in its judgment justify." Section 21. "All entries are subject to the approval of the Executive Committee of this Association, and any entry may be rejected by the Committee." Acting in accordance with the authority conferred by these sections of the By-Laws, the Executive Committee announces that should any Club belonging to the United States Golf Association permit any player whose amateur status has been declared forfeited to compete in its tournaments, the Executive Committee reserves the right to reject all entries from such Club in any tournament held by the United States Golf Association. BOTH THE East and West courses of the Merion Cricket Club will be used for the qualifying round of the national amateur championship, so that instead of starting the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 2d, it will begin on the following Monday, when the 36 holes qualification round will be played. The plan is for all the entrants to play over both courses. After that the match play will continue on the East course at 36 holes for the rest of the week. The Merion Cricket Club is the only private golf club that has two separate and distinct 18 holes courses, and next September will be the first time in the history of golf in this country that two courses will be used in connection with the national amateur championship. By postponing the event until Sept. 4th, two days will be saved, and the tournament will be completed within the week. The American Golfer Trophy will be played for on Saturday, Sept. 2d. This consists of 18 holes four-ball best-ball medal play, scratch, open to pairs from each club, irrespective of whether they are entered for the
THE AMERICAN GOLFER 285 championship or not, and there is no limit as to the number of entries from any one club. There is no entrance fee. The winning club receives the custody of the Trophy for a year and the two winners each receive a gold medal. RIGHT AFTER the Van Cortlandt Park tournament, James Barnes took part in a 36 holes professional bestball match at Sleepy Hollow, with A. J. Sanderson, the local professional, as his partner, against Walter C. Hagen, the Metropolitan Open champion, and Bob McDonald, of Buffalo, winning by 2 up and 1 to play. Incidentally, Barnes made a new record for the course, of 34, 37, Mc- Donald being next with, while Sanderson had a and Hagen a in the morning round. In the afternoon the golf was not so good. AT THE first meeting of the Professional Golfers Association of America, the following officers were elected: President, Robert White; First Vice President, Jack Hobens; Second Vice President, James Frotheringham. Herbert Strong, elected Secretary last winter, will continue in that capacity. Executive Committee : Metropolitan Section : Robert White, James Maiden, Herbert Strong, James Hepburn, Jack Hobens, Gilbert Nicholls, Jack Mackie, Willie Robinson and Thomas Kerrigan; Middle States Section: Geo. Frotheringham, S. Gardner, J. Croke, W. Fovargue, W. Marshall, D. MacIntosh; Southeastern Section: James R. Thomson, Wilfrid Reid, W. C. Byrne; Central Section: W. V. Hoare; New England Section: M. J. Brady, C. J. McGrath, Geo. Gordon; Western Section: Geo. Sargent; Pacific Section : C. G. Adams. IN THE Connecticut State championship one of the most extraordinary surprises was the failure of Mr. Hamilton K. Kerr, the 1915 titleholder, and Mr. Henry J. Topping, the runner-up in the Connecticut State amateur championship, to qualify in the meeting which was held at the Greenwich Country Club, and what made it still more singular was the fact that both were playing on their home course. With an 88 in the morning by Mr. Kerr and an 86 by Mr. Topping, both put themselves practically out of the running. The best they could do in the afternoon was an 84 by each, whereas 168 was the qualifying limit. There was a tie for first place between Mr. Samuel J. Graham, of the home club, and Mr. W. Parker Seeley (Brooklawn), at 157.
286 THE AMERICAN GOLFER MR. ARTHUR L. WALKER, JR., medalist in the Fox Hills invitation tournament. Mr. Robert Abbott (Brooklawn) and Mr. Roger H. Hovey (Hartford) led the field in the morning, each with, but in the afternoon their respective scores were 83 and 85. The following qualified for the championship division: W. Parker Seeley, Brooklawn Samuel J. Graham, Greenwich Robert Abbott, Brooklawn W. A. Jackson, Hartford S. D. Bowers, Brooklawn E. L. Scofield, Jr., Wee Burn *Roger H. Hovey, Hartford Reginald M. Lewis, Ridgefiled M. A. Davis, New Haven *Nathaniel Wheeler, Brooklawn Percy Rothwell, Hartford R. L. Jackson, Highland George B. Carhart, Greenwich G. P. Lynde, Greenwich S. Pierson, Wee Burn Otis L. Guernsey, Greenwich J. T. L. Hubbard, Brooklawn H. S. Lake, Hartford *Withdrew from match play The final was between Mr. Reggie M. Lewis (Ridgefield) and Mr. Samuel J. Graham (Greenwich), Mr. Lewis having previously disposed of E. L. Scofield, Jr., (Wee Burn) ; M. A. Davis (New Haven) and Robert Abbott, while Mr. Graham had beaten, in turn, Percy Rothwell (Hartford) ; G. P. Lynd (Greenwich) and W. A. Jackson (Highland). At the end of the first round Mr. Lewis led by one hole, ultimately winning the 36 holes match by 3 up and 1 to play. AS SHOWING the vagaries of golf and the glorious uncertainty of the game, Mr. Hamilton K. Kerr, who only the day previously had been unable to qualify in the Connecticut State championship, led the field in the invitation tournament of the Sleepy Hollow Country Club, in a tie, at 80, with Mr. Max R. Marston and Mr. Philip V. G. Carter. Mr. Kerr, however, did not remain in the tournament very long, as he got beaten in the first round by Mr. Chas. H. Brown (St. Andrews), by one hole. Mr. Brown further added to his laurels by beating, in the second round, young Philip Carter by 2 and 1. The final was between Mr. Gardiner W. White and Mr. Max R. Marston, Mr. White having beaten, in turn, D. D. Cooke (Arcola), by 8 and 7; Stuart D. Connolly (Rockland), 1 up; and Lee W. Maxwell (Scarsdale), 2 and 1; while Mr. Marston had disposed of M. V. Starring, Jr. (Sleepy Hollow), by 5 and 4; Frank W. Dyer (Montclair), 4 and 3; and C. H. Brown (St. Andrews), 4 and 3. In the final Mr. White won, 1 up. The scoring was good, Mr. White doing a to his opponent's. In the handicap event Philip V. G. Carter (Nassau) won the playoff of a tie with Frank W. Dyer, at. The
THE AMERICAN GOLFER 287 net prize went to Joseph G. McMahon (Sleepy Hollow), with In the play-off of the triple tie for the medal in the qualifying round, Mr. Marston won. FOLLOWING THE Metropolitan Open championship at Garden City, Walter C. Hagen, of Rochester, the new champion, playing in a four-ball, bestball match at the Great Neck Golf Club, with Jack Hutchison, of the Allegheny Country Club, as a partner, beat Gilbert Nicholls, the local professional, and Robert McDonald, of the Buffalo Country Club, by 3 and 2, 36 holes. The individual scores were : Hagen: Out 38, 37 In 37, 34 Hutchison : Out 35, 38 In 40, Nicholls: Out 36, 37 In 38, 35 McDonald: Out 39, 36 In 36, MR. ROGER B. TAFT, of the North Jersey Country Club, and Louis Tellier, of Brookline, won the amateurprofessional best-ball competition which ushered in the 72 holes open tournament which was played at Van Cortlandt Park under the auspices of the New York Newspaper Golf Club, with a score of 31, Mr. C. B. Harris and Elmer Loving (Quaker Ridge) were second, with 33, 32-65, Loving's individual score being 34, Other leading scores were: Mr. F. H. Hoyt, Siwanoy, and J. M. Barnes, Whitemarsh Valley Mr. J. G. Anderson, Siwanoy, and Walter Hagen, Rochester Mr. Walter Peebles, Scottish-American, and Carl Anderson, unattached Mr. M. B. Starring, Jr., and A. J. Haines, Newspaper, and "Marty" O'Loughlin, Plainfleld In the first round, at 36 holes, there was a tie for first place at 136 between James M. Barnes (Whitemarsh Valley) and Patrick J. Doyle (South Shore Field Club), Robert McDonald (Buffalo) being next, with 66, McDonald's score, which constitutes a record for the course, was made up as follows: Out In Barnes continued his fine golf by recording a 67 for the third round and a for the final round, making a total of 2, which, incidentally, is MR. REGGIE M. LEWIS, Connecticut State champion, 1916.
288 THE AMERICAN GOLFER MR. CHAS. V. BENTON, champion of the Hudson River Golf Association. the lowest total ever made in a big professional tournament. The public course at Van Cortlandt Park is quite easy, so that it does not offer any fair comparison with scores made on other courses. Macdonald Smith made a 2 at Scarsdale in the Metropolitan Open championship of 1914, but while Scarsdale is comparatively easy, it is, neverless, several strokes harder than Van Cortlandt. Following is a summary of Barnes's four rounds: First Day: Morning Round: Out In Afternoon Round: Out In Second Day: Morning Round: Out In Afternoon Round. Out In Next to Barnes came Jack Dowling, the diminutive professional of Scarsdale, with for the first day and 68, -138 for the second day for a total of 2, in a tie with Elmer W. Loving (Quaker Ridge) with and 69, Following are the scores: James Barnes, Whitemarsh Elmer Loving, Quaker Ridge Jack Dowling, Scarsdale Robert Macdonald, Buffalo Walter Hagen, Rochester Patrick J. Hill, Unattached One of the features of the tournament was the remarkable score of 68 made in the second round by Louis Martucci, the one-armed golfing wonder of Essex County. His score is worth reproducing, as follows: Out In MR. J. BARTON GARFIELD is the club champion of the Forest Hill Field Club. He beat Mr. John J. Radel in the 36 holes final by the large margin of 10 up and 9 to play. MR. C. V. BENTON, the champion of the Hudson River Golf Association, is also the club champion of the Hudson River Country Club. He beat Mr. S. P. Emerick in the 36 holes final, 1 up. MR. C. J. BELLAMY, of the Springfield (Mass.) Country Club, won the invitation tournament of the Buffalo Country Club, beating Mr. W. Hamilton Gardner in the final by 2 and 1. Mr. Gardner was the medalist in the qualifying round. MRS. H. N. MCMASTER, of the Mohawk Golf Club, of Schenectady, N. Y., made a new women's record at the Onondaga Golf and Country Club course, going round in 88, beating Mrs. J. B. Large, of Buffalo, in the final of the women's invitation tournament, by 5 up and 4 to play. THE Yahnundasis Golf Club of Utica, won the League of the Iroquois tournament with a total score of 50½ points. The Onondaga Golf and Country Club were next with 45½ points, followed by Wanakah Country Club, 44½ and Oak Hill Country Club, 39½. MR. F. B. MURPHY, of the Carpet Trade Association, without doubt holds the record of being the greatest worst golfer in the world if one may accept the score turned in by him at the tournament played recently at the Hackensack Golf Club under the auspices of the Carpet Trade Association. If any one has ever approached Mr. Murphy's score, we have yet to hear of him. Mr. Murphy has the distinction of going around an 18 holes course...and not a very long one at that...in the record figures of 298 strokes, made up as follows: Out In The true magnificence of this score may be better appreciated when compared with that of Mr. Horace T. Cook, who played the same day in the same tournament. His score follows: Out In The low record of the course is held by Mr. Oswald Kirkby, with a 34, 35 69, figures which pale into absolute insignificance when contrasted with Mr. Murphy's achievement.
