1 42 EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA NOTES By "FAR AND SURE." The sixth annual invitation tournament of the Philadelphia Cricket Club for the St. Martin's cup on Sept. 2 to 23, inclusive, attracted not only the largest field of golfers which has ever participated in a Philadelphia tournament, but was responsible for one of the largest gatherings of golfers in the history of the sport in this country. In all the entries numbered 223, and of these 26 started, representing fifty clubs. This big field was sent off at four-minute intervals, and so well was the tournament handled that every one was able to finish in good light, a most difficult feat at this time of the year. One of the pleasant features of the St. Martin's tourney is that those invited are paired with players of as near playing ability as it is possible for the committee to arrange. While this entails much work for the committee, it has proved tremendously popular with the participants who know that there is no possibility of a good player being paired with a poor one to the great disadvantage of the former. It also tends to diminish the chances of a too greatly congested field. The club introduced a pleasing innovation in the form of a dinner to the contestants, covers for more than 5 being laid. The popularity of this annual event is growing at such a rate that if the increased number of players continues the problem of running the tournament will be most difficult in a few years, as very few drop out from year to year. There has been so much rain parcelled out to Philadelphians during the summer which has just ended that a dry course was a godsend to the players. The course, as usual, was in splendid condition and the greens were fast and tricky. The medal for the low score went to Mr. Howard W. Perrin, of the Merion Cricket Club. Mr. Perrin has almost a mortgage on the low medal scoring around Phila-

With the exception of a pair of sixes his golf was of a very high calibre. His 8 led the large field by three strokes. Of the twenty or more out of town players Mr. E. K. Rothstein, of the Baltimore Country Club, was the only one to get into the first sixteen and that by reason of a lucky draw, five getting 9 and tieing for the last place. So far as the tournament was concerned it was a succession of surprises. The first was the defeat of Mr. Perrin by Mr. Abbott Collins of Aronimink in the first round. The West Philadelphian made the round in 78 and won by 2 up and to play. His card proved to be the best of the entire tournament. The cards: Mr. Collins: Out In Mr. Perrin: Out In Mr. Collins in turn was eliminated in the second round by Mr. A. C. Williams of the home club, the latter winning by 4 up and 2 to play. Mr. George C., of the Bala Golf Club, who proved to be the winner of the tournament started his way to the final by beating Mr. Wirt L. Thompson, of Huntington Valley, and a former Philadelphia champion. Mr. E. A. Service, of the Philadelphia Country Club, one of the younger school of players, put Mr. A. W. Tillinghast out by 5 and 3 and rounded out the second day's play by defeating Mr. E. A. Satterthwaite, the recent winner of the Philadelphia Cup, 2 and. In the semi-final Mr. almost caught a tartar in Mr. H. Martin, of the Merion Cricket Club. The latter was up at the turn but Mr. evened up matters on the tenth and took the lead on the eleventh. From that point it was a see-saw struggle. At the fifteenth the Merion player went to the front but the Bala player squared the match on the next hole, and neither was able to gain an advantage during the remainder of the match. On the eighteenth Mr. drove out of bounds, but by a splendid recovery halved the hole and won the extra hole by running down a forty-foot putt. In the other semi-final Mr. Service met Mr. Williams. The match was all square at the turn. Mr. Service won the tenth and thirteenth and the rest of the holes were halved. The final was a splendidly played match and was

Fitler Martin 3 and Bottome 4 and 3 Williams Collins Service 6 and 4 Satterthwaite 5 and 3 The Belfield Country Club held its second annual invitation tournament at Wister on October 4, 5, 6, and 7. Belfield is one of several splendid nine hole courses in the Philadelphia district and its first tournament was more of an experiment than anything else, as the members were not quite certain whether a large tournament would be feasible. It proved to be a decided success and this year's was in no way behind. Altogether seventy-four players entered, the club giving cups for the winner and runner up in three sixteens and for the winner of the beaten eights, as well as a medal for the low score in the qualifying round. Mr. George C., the winner of the St. Martins Cup led the field on the qualifying day with a card of 74. His card follows: Martin 4 and 3 Williams 4 and 2 Service up, 9 h. Service up Second Sixteen. Fulton, of the Frankford Cricket Club. Mr. Satterthwaite has played more golf at Belfield in the last two years than at Riverton and the easy way in which the Frankford man disposed of him was unexpected. At the turn the home player was four down, the match ending on the fourteenth green. An interesting match developed between Mr. Abbot Collins and Mr., the latter winning 3 up and to play. Mr. H. B., the Eastern interscholastic champion, disposed of Mr. E. B. Peet, Huntingdon Valley, by 4 and 2 in the first round and Mr. H.

Lewis, of the Athletic Club, of Philadelphia, and Mr. G. O. Suddards, of Overbrook. In the latter match Mr. King went out in 36, which equaled the best score made in the tournament. By defeating Dr. Fulton the big cricketer reached the final. In the first tournament last year he was beaten on the eighteenth green by Dr. H. P. Fisher, of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, and the same fate was his this year. Mr. defeated Mr. in the semi-final after a hard fought match. The final proved to be a ding-dong affair. Of the first nine holes six were won, both starting for home on equal terms. The tenth was halved, but Mr. King won the next two. The school boy evened up matters by taking the next two holes. The fifteenth went to the cricketer, Mr. squaring the match on the seventeenth. On the last hole both were on the edge of the green with their drives. Mr. overran the hols by ten feet, while his opponent was four feet short. Mr. 's ball on his next hovered over the hole for a moment and dropped in, while Mr. King's putt reached the lip of the cup, and stayed there. SUMMARY: BELFIELD COUNTRY CLUB, PHILADELPHIA. Barlow, the Eastern Women's Golf Association champion, for the seventh time out of the eight years she has contested for the Mary Thayer Farnum Memorial Cup, won that trophy, after a splendidly played thirty-six holes at medal play over the course of Philadelphia Cricket Club on Oct. 2 and 3. Heavy rains before the tournament started made the course very heavy. Mrs, Barlow's card of 88 the first day was a splendid effort and she demonstrated that as a medal player in not only that tournament but in the Women's National tournament at Baltusrol, the Women's Eastern championship at Brae-Burn and the invitation tourney at Deal Beach, she is in a class by herself. In the Brae-Burn event Mrs. Barlow established a record score of 85 strokes for the course and finished the 54 holes of medal play with a card of 272. Mrs. Caleb Fox, another Philadelphian, was four strokes away, while the next nearest was 5 strokes behind. The same large margin separated Mrs. Barlow and the other women in the Deal tournament. Mrs. Barlow, as the result of the first day's play had a lead of three strokes over Mrs. C. H. Vanderbeck, of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, and a well-played 93 on the second day increased the gap materially, the Merion Cricket Club player winning the cup with a card of 8 for the thirty-six holes, and beating Mrs. Vanderbeck, her nearest competitor, by the generous margin of nine strokes. The latter was the winner of the choice gross score prize for eighteen holes with an 85. Miss Irene Richardson, of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, won the choice net score prize with an 83, while Miss Eleanor Chandler, of the Huntingdon Valley Country Club, was the winner of the handicap net score prize for thirtysix holes with 85. It stands nearly three feet high and bears this inscription: Margaret Crozer Fox From the Members of the Huntingdon Valley Country Club In Appreciation of her Sportsmanship and Golf Which Compels the Admiration of the Golfers of America. 9. The cup was presented to Mrs. Fox by a committee which included Mr. John W. Pepper, president of the

6 47 club; Mr. George H. Frazier, Mr. J. R. McAllister and Mr. E. F. Henson. Mrs. Fox, in addition to having been the first Philadelphia woman to reach the final in the women's national championship, being defeated for the title at the Philadelphia Country Club by Miss Ruth Underhill in 899, has been the individual champion of Philadelphia four times and is the present title holder, has won the Silver Mrs. Ronald H. Barlow is the winner of the Silver Cross for women for the present year. This is awarded each year to the player making the combined lowest score in the qualifying round of eighteen holes for the individual championship and the Mary Thayer Farnum Memorial Cup. Mrs. Barlow's scores in the two events, were: Qualifying round, 94; Mary Thayer Memorial Cup, 8. With the exception of 97, when Mrs. Fox won the trophy, and 98, when the two were tied, each getting a medal, no woman in Philadelphia has won the Silver Cross other than Mrs. Barlow since it was first given in 93. The annual tournament of the Bogey Club, whose members are all on the roll of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, was held at St. Martins on October 9. It was a handicap medal event, the winner being Mr. Isaac N. Simonin, with a card of Dr. George Parry won the championship of the Old York Country Club by defeating Mr. H. Fretz in the final by 4 up and 2 to play. Dr. Parry lowered the course record a stroke with a card of 9, there being five temporary greens in play. Fifty-two players participated in a dinner match at the Whitemarsh Valley Country Club on October 4, Mr. S. Boyd Carrigan and his associates beating Mr. W. Disston's team by the small margin of two matches. The teams were as follows: W. Disston E. C. Griswold F. S. Sherman H. L. Conrad W. Beidler J. W. Koons H. Burk, Jr P. C. McKinlay... H. W.
