1 WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT THE SENIORS' TOURNAMENT AT APAWAMIS By OUR SPECIAL INTERVIEWER THIS is a social affair, not an Old Man s tournament, as you call it, said Mr. Eddy, frowning upon a flippant young crack player, neither is it Grandpa out on a two days lark it is a pleasant and dignified gathering of golf lovers under the auspices of the Apawamis Club s hospitality (at $1.50 per lunch, or starve) of the leading members of all professions and business in the United States. The object is ostensibly to play golf the real object is to sit around under the trees talk diseases, and swap stories. Simeon Ford solemnly testified: Our committee find that golf prolongs life a little too long. No one of the Seniors, unfortunately, has passed away since we started this affair six years ago (in fact they are getting hardier every year) and they are coming to be fifty-five years of age with astonishing, overwhelming rapidity. We will soon have to accommodate five hundred aged aspirants for our clocks, tea sets, cake baskets and inkstands and how they will all manage to limp around our somewhat hilly course in two days, is more than I can imagine. We sent them out in foursomes this year, and though they played gaily along with each other s balls, and violated all known rules of the Royal and Ancients, they took so much time that many had to finish by moonlight and the help of auto lamps. I thought that by forcing them to buy an old time $1.50 Grand Union lunch, each day, many would stay away, but they brought their own sandwiches, cold tea and hardboiled eggs, and picnicked along the course. We think seriously of persuading the medical fraternity to issue a warning to old men entitled Golf starts Heart Disease or Bunkers and Blind Staggers and sending it out in neat little pamphlets with our invitations next year. But we fear nothing that we can do will be able to stem the tide. It is giving our committee the nightmare we see nice genial old gentlemen swearing hard and hacking out of bunkers, in our dreams; and thousands of dear old grandpas made peevish by fishing balls out of our pond, or wading about in our brook. We had charitable hopes that many would be sunstruck in the ninety-five degrees of heat last Wednesday, but they all came in smiling, and many asked for hot tea. Having seen the inability of heat to decimate the Seniors, our Committee have about decided to set the date of the 15 tournament for March twelfth, as the great blizzard occurred on that date and may occur again and many might possibly pass away in the snowdrifts. But if we do decide on that date (with a cold lunch at $5.00 per) I haven t a doubt that we will find over four hundred old gentlemen on the first tee, each with a bottle of hot soup, ready to start. Really, it is a serious matter and our Committee is badly stumped. Young Mr. W., who does the course in the seventies, said: I have never known my Uncle Henry to be other than a truth-telling and truth-loving old gentleman. He is a strict churchman and a vestryman besides, and never plays golf on Sunday. I give him ten strokes and have a hard time beating him. His handicap, at his home course in New Jersey, I believe, used to be 12. When he put in at the Seniors Tournament, I must say I blushed for him. He was so evidently after a cake basket for Aunt Mary. He made a bold and wicked try for it, but, fortunately for our family name, he got bunkered at every hole, and his 123 didn t do him any good. But he was unable to look me in the face afterwards and say: They should have given me 48 I was underhandicapped. Mr. P. said: No, I didn t hear of or see any scraps during the tournament but I saw many novel ways of driving, as I sat on the tee. One old gentleman raised his club up three times, and bowed low, as if kowtowing to some heathen god of Luck, before striking at the ball. Another took a running leap at his ball and hit as he went past. Another turned in and down his club as if to hit on the lead. Another teed up on one of the white disc but was told he was not obliged to do so. One pair both sliced into the woods, and disappeared with their caddies hunting for their balls, until six or seven other pairs had started out, then reappeared suddenly, to the surprise of everyone, and the blocking of the course. Another old-timer teed up with at least four inches of sand, and then hit a sky ball or species of foul into the long grass. All were nervous of course, with the gallery behind them, and one player teed up a hard boiled egg by mistake, which he was carrying to sustain him on the tenth tee. I did not see this myself, but was told it on good authority. Another received a telephone message just as he had started off the tee Is it from my wife? he asked, looking back being answered in the affirmative, he continued quickly on the course after his excellently driven ball. Another teed up in front of the disc line, and when called back said: I always play that way in Cincinnati. Another swung and missed the ball, turned gravely to the committee and asked if the stroke counted. He was told it surely did. He then

2 argued for five minutes that he had not started yet, and that no stroke should count until he had actually started. Not to have 'words' and to avoid delaying the game, the Committee yielded the point. As he came in with 112, it did not matter much. Another nice old gentleman asked the loan of a ball. "Justice Pitney, of the Supreme Court, told us a good story, while waiting to drive off, about a Scotchman and a darkey, and, for some reason of very deep sand pits. I hate to criticize the holes, but the drain at the eighth should be filled up, also the pits to the right boarded over temporarily at least. I think the ninth too long by half a mile. The tee should be advanced as far as the roadway, and the brook filled in with tan-bark or cement. The fourteenth hole should be placed at the brook, and the famous 'pond' should be watered occasionally, as it is hard to dig a ball out of dry clay. The fourteenth and MR. H. E. FRENCH, IN WHITE HAT, WAITING TO DRIVE AT THE SHORT EIGHTH HOLE AT APAWAMIS in the Seniors' Tournament. He had just completed the first seven holes in twenty-nine course he was not at all nervous mixed the dialects amusingly. He won a prize, and it was a very popular win, indeed. "As to driving not one in ten made a bad drive. The course was sunbaked and hard, and many drives were over 0 yards. I think this was owing to diet and abstemiousness of course all of the Seniors are teetotalers, and the spring at the seventeenth hole was drunk dry. I am told that most of the water in the well at the ninth hole also is used up. If we don't get rain soon it will be a great detriment to the course. A strange fact in connection with the tournament was that not one Senior entered the nineteenth hole, and our able barkeeps stood around absolutely idle for two days." Old Mr. N., who played in the tournament said: "The course is in fine shape, but there are forty-two sixteenth greens might be sprinkled with old tea leaves to stop the ball at present they are too keen, I slipped and fell on two greens and a ball shoots away from the hole like an electric eel. If I might criticize the seventeenth hole, I should say that the spring leaks badly at the foot of the hill, and the overflow of water dampens the green too much. I suggest also that it would be well to establish a Cafe at the ninth hole, in the handsome and commodious cow-house now adorning the green. It seems very suitable for a cafe (calf). Otherwise I think the course almost equal to that of my home club in New Hampshire which is saying a great deal." But all joking aside it is time some account be given of the actual outcome of this most popular and enjoyable of all tournaments. Mr. H. E. French of Brooklawn at the end of the second day's play was 29

3 by all odds the shining light of this vast army of veterans. Seemingly not content to win outright the prize for the best net score of the two days' play, he tied with Mr. F. A. Wright of Baltusrol and Mr. C. A. Spofford of Garden City for the best gross score at and his 82 was in a tie for the best eighteen hole gross score the second day with General E. M. Weaver, Chevy Chase; Darwin P. Kingsley, Sleepy Hollow; F. A. Wright, Baltusrol, and C. A. Spofford, out there were fifteen net scores of 82. Those who tied were Winthrop Sargent, Merion; C. F. Quincey, Greenwich; J. H. Killinger, Wykagyl; U. D. Eddy, Apawamis; E. M. Hooper, Wilmington; W. E. Truesdale, Fox Hills; G. S. Barnum, New Haven; Robert Collier, Dunwoodie; S. L. Allen, Moorestown; E. M. Slayton, Intervale; James Barber, Englewood; Brent Arnold, Cincinnati; W. V. Bayard, Park; James B. Clark, Apawamis; Charles Hathaway, Essex County. JUDGE GILDERSLEEVE PUTTING ON THE FIRST GREEN AT APAWAMIS IN THE SENIORS' TOURNAMENT His partner, Judge Morgan J. O'Brien at the left The three age classes were the last to be figured out. In Class A, for golfers from 60 to 65 years of age, Martin Carey, Oakland, won with 175, 143. A tie cropped up in Class B for the veterans from 66 to 72, between Henry Stoddard, New Haven, with a card of 2, 150, and A. S. Nichols, Wykagyl, with, 150. Horace L. Hotchkiss, founder of the Seniors' Tournament, proved to be the winner in Class C, which included every golfer of 73 or over. Mr. Hotchkiss finished with the creditable card of 1,. The following scores give the second day's card, two day total, handicap and net scores in the order named: H. E. French, Brooklawn Martin Carey, Oakland J. A. Flynn, Oakland Mahlon Pitney, Chevy Chase 2d Day 2 Day Garden City. As the rules governing the tournament forbid the winning of more than one prize by the same player, Mr. French elected to play safe by taking the prize for the best net score of the two days' play for which he had no opposition. Both of the eighteen-hole net prizes, one for the first day and the other for the second, were won outright. Justice Mahlon Pitney of the United States Supreme Court won the first day prize with his, 70, and the winner for the second day was Fred Gerken, Oakland, whose score was 84, 66. The kickers' handicap which was played the second day resulted in the most gigantic deadlock of all, no fewer than fifteen of the survivors finishing on even terms. Each man selected his handicap before starting, and the net score nearest to the lowest gross score made was to be the winner. As it turned Handicap Net
