A Brief History of Glen Abbey Golf Club The land on which Glen Abbey Golf Club stands was originally acquired as a private estate in the 1930s by Andre Dorfman, a wealthy mining engineer. On his 350 acres, lying just west of the Town of Oakville, Dorfman built the handsome stone mansion that became known as Golf House. This building is currently attached to the headquarters of Golf Canada, and the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum. Golf House stands on the upper part of the present course, looking down into the deep, wooded ravine cut over the centuries by Sixteen Mile Creek making its way toward Lake Ontario. In 1953 Dorfman sold his property and home to the Jesuit Fathers, who used it as a retreat for the men of the Toronto and Hamilton Dioceses until the early 1960s, when the Order sold the estate to business interests, leaving, as a memorial of their tenure, the word Abbey permanently associated with the site. A golf course was constructed on the eastern section of the property and, along with tennis courts, a pool and a ski run, operated under the name Upper Canada Country Club, and Clearstream developments, until the early 1970s. In 1974 Great Northern Capital bought the land as part of a parcel they were putting together for residential development. The principal Rod McIsaac approached the RCGA about redesigning the golf course to be suitable as the home for the Canadian Open. Together they hired Jack Nicklaus to design a spectator-friendly, championship quality golf course to become the permanent host of the Canadian Open. Glen Abbey Golf Club opened on June 1, 1976, and hosted its first of 23 straight Opens in June of Glen Abbey was sold to Golf Canada (formerly the Royal Canadian Golf Association) in 1981 and in 1999 it was purchased by ClubLink Corporation. Since that time, ClubLink has continued to operate the Abbey as a daily fee course with a limited membership. In 2013 Glen Abbey Golf Club is set to host its 26th Canadian Open in only 36 years of existence. 7

Canadian Open Timeline at Glen Abbey Golf Club (courtesy of Clublink) Launching a Legend Lee Trevino, six years after his first Canadian Open victory and just months after back surgery, won the inaugural Open held at Glen Abbey, the first solo course design by his arch-rival Jack Nicklaus. Monster of the Monastery Despite the best efforts of defending champion Lee Trevino, Bruce Lietzke hung on to defeat a tough field and an even tougher Glen Abbey during a tournament that earned the course the ominous nickname, The Monster of the Monastery. And then there were Four Trevino became just the fourth player in history to win the championship more than twice. The other members of this exclusive club include Leo Diegel (four), Tommy Armour (three) and Sam Snead (three). England Conquers 1981 England s Peter Oosterhuis edged Bruce Lietzke, Andy North, and course designer Jack Nicklaus by one shot to win his only PGA Tour title. A New Tournament Record 1982 Bruce Lietzke, who won at Glenn Abbey in 1978 and was runner-up in 1981, set a new 72-hole course record of 277, seven under par, three better than Lee Trevino s record from Double Handicap 1983 Disobeying his doctor s orders, Johnny Miller came to Glen Abbey a month after gallbladder surgery but was defeated by John Cook in a six-hole playoff. Shark Beats Bear 1984 Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman put on a classic battle in the 1984 Canadian Open at Glen Abbey, but the Australian s final-round 67 was enough for a two-shot victory. Strange Outcomes In 1985, Curtis Strange won his first Canadian Open at Glen Abbey by holding off two of the world s best: Jack Nicklaus and defending champion Greg Norman. Love is Third 1986 Much was expected of heralded rookie Davis Love III at the 1986 Open, but he finished in a tie for third behind an unheralded veteran, 43-year-old Bobby Murphy. Canada s Hope 1987 Canadian Richard Zokol found himself carrying the hopes of a nation as he entered the final round of the 1987 Canadian Open. When it Rains 1988 The Open became a five-day affair after rains forced the suspension of play during the final round with 22 players still to finish with Ken green coming out on top. Keeping up with Jones Steve Jones took advantage of a Glen Abbey softened by rain to win the 80th edition of the Canadian Open with a record-setting 17-under-par score. Wayne s World For Canadians, the big story of the 1990 Canadian Open was less about eventual champion Wayne Levi than how Glen Abbey s ninth hole may have prevented Canadian Dave Barr from winning. 8

Canadian Open Timeline at Glen Abbey Golf Club (courtesy of Clublink) Price is Right After stumbling in the 1984 Canadian Open, Nick price made no mistake in 1991, shooting a final-round 66 for a one-shot win over David Edwards. Breaking a Losing Streak 1992 Without a tournament win in more than two years Greg Norman lost a three-shot lead over the last five holes but sank a 12 foot birdie putt to force a playoff with two-time winner Bruce Lietzke. A Frosty September 1993 David Frost watched from the 18th fairway on Sunday as Fred Couples birdies the final regulation hole, knowing he had to do the same thing to win the Open. He did, and he did. No Discounting Price 1994 Nick Price came within a whisker of skipping the Canadian Open after a tiring summer that saw him win the British Open and PGA Championship. Smart decision! Picking up Steam 1995 Mark O Meara needed a final-round 67 and one playoff hole at Glen Abbey to defeat Bob Lohr and clinch his second win of Blown Away 1996 Hurricane Fran blew into town on Saturday; play was suspended twice that day and eventually cancelled, marking the first time the tournament had been shortened to 54 holes. Friend No More 1998 It wasn t pretty; some called it a comedy of errors- but in the end, all history will record is that Billy Andrade defeated Bob Friend on the first playoff hole. Sutton Impact 1999 After four previous top-10 finishes at Glen Abbey, Hal Sutton put on a golf clinic for the fans, and the rest of the field, posting a three-shot victory over Dennis Paulson. Triple Crown 2000 Tiger s return to Glen Abbey was one for the history books: His victory made him only the second player to win golf s Triple Crown and he made one of the greatest shots ever. Duel in the Sun 2004 The planets seemed aligned at the Centennial Open for Mike Weir to become the first Canadian in 50 years to win the championship, but Vijay Singh intervened. A Rain-soaked Rookie Champ 2008 For the 24th time in its history, Glen Abbey has proved a fitting showcase for the RBC Canadian Open. As it has since 1976, Glen Abbey provided fans with world-class golf on one of the world s finest spectator courses, whether they were fortunate enough to attend in person or watched Chez Reavie claim the title on television. Green Surprises Himself 2009 It only stands to reason that this RBC Canadian Open would produce a champion who grew up in Toronto Australia. Nathan Green may have honed his game on the Canadian Tour but he s as Australian as they come and won golf s third-oldest championship by outlasting Retief Goosen in a two-hole playoff. 9

All contaminated flashings were stripped, regarded and resodded. The project spanned from Summer 2011-Fall UNIQUE FEATURES Stadium course with a pin wheeled design makes for a very accessible venue for professional events. The valley holes are reputed to be some of the more picturesque in the country with our signature hole #11 teeing off from close to 100 feet above the fairway into the 16 Mile Creek valley. 11

Glen Abbey Golf Club Yardage and Par Changes to the front-nine hole rotation at Glen Abbey Golf Club for the 104th Playing of Canada s National Open Championship The decision to once again change the front-nine hole rotation at Glen Abbey similar to what was done for the 2009 RBC Canadian Open is based on several factors, all of which related back to the best interests of players competing in the 2013 RBC Canadian Open. A summary of these factors is as follow: Overall, the revised routing saves players approximately 900 paces of total travel distance, a reduction that will have a positive effect on tournament pace of play. The walk from the practice range to the 1st tee has been greatly reduced with players taking a more direct route to the tee. The revised rotation will alleviate congestion that traditionally occurred around the former 3rd tee. Besides a high amount of spectator traffic in that area due to its central location, the area around the 3rd tee was also a passage route for players making their way from the practice range to the former 1st tee, as well as players moving from the former 9th hole to the 10th hole. The revised tournament front-nine routing which was implemented in 2009 and now again in 2013 was originally proposed to players during the 2008 RBC Canadian Open as well as PGA TOUR officials. The response from all was overwhelmingly positive and it was well received during the 2009 RBC Canadian Open. The decision to re-route the front-nine was one that had been considered several years ago for previous championships conducted at Glen Abbey. The Nicklaus Group was consulted and approved the change. It was the decision of Golf Canada, then course owner, not to proceed with the change prior to Front 9 Back 9 Hole Former Hole Yards Par Hole Yards Par
