8 Club History The Club s history is the subject of two publications, A Hundred Years of Golf (1993) and The Hamilton Golf and Country Club An Illustrated History and the following account on Colt the architect draw on those sources. Hamilton Golf and Country Club s history dates back to October 24, 1894, when the newly formed, unincorporated Hamilton Golf Club held its opening match on a 12-hole, links-style course on grounds belonging to The Central Fair Agricultural and Industrial Company. The property was located at the corner of Barton and Ottawa Streets, adjoining the former Hamilton Jockey Club property in what is now Hamilton s industrial northeast. Hamilton G&CC is one of the 10 founding clubs of the Royal Canadian Golf Association today s Golf Canada. In the spring of 1896, the Club moved to a new nine hole course (later expanded to 18) that was laid out on a property known as Paradise Farm, located on the south side of Aberdeen Avenue in Hamilton, just below the escarpment. Although we have no record of who laid out the first nine holes, it was most likely founders Peter Crerar and J.J. Morrison, both Scots, who oversaw the work. A clubhouse was built the following year. In October 1899, the lady members organized their own club as a section within The Hamilton Golf Club. By 1901, the Club had 40 lady and 65 gentlemen members. The Club hired its first greenskeeper, John Sutherland, on April 1, Sutherland came to the Aberdeen Avenue property from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club, where he learned about turf care for lawn bowling and tennis courts. At the time, sheep grazed the fairways and there were wooden fences around the greens to protect the short grass. Sutherland started out with a wheelbarrow, rake and a hoe and gradually the layout was expanded to 12 holes, then 15, and finally 18 by about It s interesting to note that in 1903 the Club received permission for the first time to create bunkers on the course as part of its lease. In 1907, the Club purchased the property. The Hamilton Golf and Country Club Limited, today's club, was incorporated in June A year later, it purchased the Paradise Farm for $12,000 and then leased the golf course to the Hamilton Golf Club until 1912, at which time the two clubs amalgamated and the original Hamilton Golf Club ceased to exist. 7 Continued on page 2 Hamilton Golf and Country Club 232 Golf Links Road Ancaster, Ontario, L9G 2N5

9 Club History continued... Rising property taxes and member dissatisfaction with the course prompted the Directors to begin a search for a new location late in 1912 with the assistance of Sutherland and George Cumming, the professional from The Toronto Golf Club. In January 1914, the Club purchased the 200-acre Grange farm in Ancaster from Mrs. Margaret Bevan for $40,000. Harry S. Colt of England was retained to lay out a new course on the Ancaster property. He had already designed a number of courses in the United Kingdom, including the new Eden course at St. Andrews, and had served as the architect for The Toronto Golf Club course in Colt visited Ancaster in May 1914, and designed the course for a fee of 300 guineas (about $1,533). The work of clearing the grounds and laying out the holes began immediately under the direction of course superintendent Sutherland, and seeding was completed by the fall. The planting of what would become many thousands of trees and shrubs also commenced. The total cost of the project over the years , including that of the land, was $108,000. The course was opened for play for one month in late 1915 and the formal opening was held on June 1, The remodelled farmhouse served as the clubhouse until 1929, when the present one was opened by J.J. Morrison, one of the founders and early presidents of the original club and an Honorary Life Member. What you see today is not a lot different than Harry Colt saw in 1914, says Club historian Les King. For the first few decades of the 20th Century, Hamilton was considered one of the best courses in North America. The Aberdeen Avenue course was sold by the Club in 1924 to the City of Hamilton for $90,000 and was developed into the present municipal Chedoke Golf Club. The years were golden ones for Hamilton G&CC. In 1919, the Ancaster course hosted the 2nd International Matches between the leading amateur golfers of the United States and Canada, witnessing American stars as Chick Evans, Bobby Jones and Francis Ouimet competing against the likes of Canada's George Lyon, William McLuckie and Hamilton s own Fritz Martin. The Canadian Open was held the following week and the winner, Douglas Edgar from Atlanta, set a new course record of 66. This was to be eclipsed by Tommy Armour s 64 at the 1930 Open. The ladies Canadian Open title was contested over the Ancaster course in 1922, 1924 and 1929, with Alexa Stirling, Glenna Collett and Helen Hicks, respectively, emerging victorious. In 1928, acting on earlier advice that it had received from Colt's partner, Hugh Alison, who had visited and advised on the layout in 1920, the Board purchased 119 acres located east of the 14th and 15th holes (now Nos. 5 and 6 of the South Course) for the sum of $15,000. This land was planted with trees. Almost a half-century later, 75 acres were developed by the Club as its new East nine, with C.E. (Robbie) Robinson as the architect. Construction on the new nine commenced during November 1973 and was completed in September 1974 at a cost of $320,000. To accommodate the new nine, changes had to be made to the existing nine-hole short course and to the 15th and 16th holes of the old course. Club President Glen Chambers and New Nine Committee Chairman Jim Firth officially opened the East nine on August 2, For playing purposes, the Club s 27 holes were designated as the West Nine (the original holes 1 to 9), the South Nine (the original holes 10 to 18) and the East Nine. They are played in three rotations, W-S, S-E and E-W. With the exception of the alterations made to the old 15th and 16th holes noted above, and changes in the locations of the greens on the 4th and 13th holes, the original course (now W-S) remains basically the same as that laid out by Colt. 10 Club History continued... The sale in 1984 of some 22 acres adjoining the East nine allowed the Club to both discharge the debt incurred in building the new nine and to fund a major renovation of the clubhouse and the installation of a new automated irrigation system on the course. The 1990s witnessed several significant events. In 1991, Warren Sye, in winning the Ontario Men s Amateur Championship, set a new course record of 62 for the W-S course, breaking the old mark of 64 established by Armour in 1930 and tied by Jim Nelford in In 1994, the Club celebrated its Centennial with the publication of its history, One Hundred Years of Golf, by Les King, and by hosting the Canadian Men s Amateur Championship for the sixth time. The Club was the venue in 1996 for the Du Maurier Championship, an event on the PGA Senior Tour in which Charles Coody triumphed. In winning the 1999 Club Championship, meanwhile, Matt Ion not only shattered the record for the three-round event with an 11-underpar total but also established a new record of 65 for the S-E course. The next significant event was the Bell Canadian Open in 2003, won by Bob Tway in a playoff over Brad Faxon. The Open returned in 2006, when Jim Furyk won by a single stroke. The modern-day course record of 63 was matched four times that week, with Jim Furyk, Justin Rose, Brett Quigley and Kevin Sutherland each sharing in the feat. Renovations on the clubhouse began in April It was opened for partial occupancy in June 2008, before being completed in November 2008, with the grand opening celebration held on June 14th, Most of the driving range nets and poles were brought down in an ice and wind storm in February The driving range was subsequently relocated to the range initially built to accommodate the 2003 Canadian Open. The teeing area of this ground, which no longer requires nets or poles, was expanded in conjunction with the clubhouse renovation. In October 2009, Hamilton G&CC s shareholders voted in favour of relocating six short course holes to the site of the old driving range. Construction of the new holes commenced in November 2009 and was completed in time for a July 1, 2011 opening. In September 2009, the Club received all necessary permits to begin construction on the water resources project, which included construction of a 20,000,000+ gallon reservoir to the right of No. 4 West. It also involved the re-routing of the stream channel of the tributary of Ancaster Creek in the vicinity of No. 3 East green and the adjacent irrigation pond. The water resources project was completed in late fall The current Club Professional is David Miller, who previously served as an assistant pro at the Club from 1991 to Miller is only the sixth person to hold this position since Nicol Thompson served from 1912 until his retirement in He was succeeded by Dick Borthwick, who retired in Ken Steeves help the reins from 1975 until his untimely passing in Gary Maue took over from 1981 to 1989, and Rob McDannold held down the Head Golf Professional role from 1989 until Golf Course Superintendent Rhod Trainor joined the Club in The Chief Operating Officer, George Pinches, was appointed in October 2003, replacing John Mickle, Hamilton G&CC s longest serving General Manager, who retired in The Club currently has over 1,200 members, of whom nearly three quarters are golfing members. 12 Harry S. Colt The Natural Choice for Hamilton G&CC By BRENT LONG While copies of his hole-by-hole renderings are displayed proudly in the stately clubhouse at Hamilton Golf and Country Club, Harry Shapland Colt never saw his completed work at what would become one of North America s truly great country clubs. The English golf course architect ( ) first journeyed to Canada in March 1911 to design the course at The Toronto Golf Club and returned two years later to inspect it. Colt was back on the boat headed to Canada in April 1914 to visit the new site for Hamilton G&CC in Ancaster. It was a quick trip. He and his wife, Charlotte Laura, returned to England on May 18th aboard the Megantic, which sailed from Montreal. Although Colt had started working as a partner in the Hastings Law Firm of Sayer & Colt in 1894, his passion was golf. He would soon start tinkering in course design, with his first solo effort at Rye Golf Club near the English Channel, where he became its Honorary Secretary in In 1897, Colt became a founding member of the Royal & Ancient Rules of Golf Committee. In 1901, he applied for the job of Secretary at the new Sunningdale Club outside London. It was from this base that he gradually developed his interest and ultimate career as a golf course architect, making him the first of that profession to have not previously been a professional golfer. Over his career Colt would play a role in the design of more than 300 courses worldwide 115 on his own. When the father of British golf course design arrived in Toronto he was in his early 40s and firmly established as the world s first international designer of great golf courses. His views on architecture were set out in 1912 in a book co-edited by Sir George Riddell and Martin H.F. Hutton. In introducing his thoughts on the subject of golf course design, Colt emphasized that, it may be well to bear in mind that golf is primarily a pastime and not a penance, and that the player should have the chance of extracting from the game the maximum amount of pleasure with the minimum amount of discomfort, as punishment for his evil ways. He will not obtain this pleasure unless you provide plenty of difficulties, but surely there is no need for vindictiveness. Continued on page 2 Hamilton Golf and Country Club 232 Golf Links Road Ancaster, Ontario, L9G 2N5

13 Harry S. Colt continued... The first architect to prepare tree-planting plans, Colt s design concept excluded holes more than 500 yards. A master of the short hole, he disliked blind shots, but enjoyed creating illusions to deceive golfers. He was also among the first to take linksland golf and bring it inland, as he did with both the Toronto and Hamilton courses, where he employed horse and plow in construction. In 2005, Bruce Critchley wrote in Golf Course Architecture that, Colt saw it as his vocation to bring in angles and bends, slopes and undulations, the soft curves of nature. If he had one philosophy it was that his courses should blend in with their surroundings, be part of the landscape, not imposed upon it. He introduced the dogleg, not solely as a space-induced change of direction, but part of the many questions a golfer should be asked to measure his skill and retain his interest. By the time Colt arrived at Hamilton in May 1914, he d left Sunningdale and was fully engaged in golf course architecture. He later partnered with Hugh Alison, John Morrison and, for a few earlier years, Dr. Alister MacKenzie. Although Hamilton G&CC does not have a record of his initial thoughts on the land or the design of the course, Colt did place the plans in the capable hands of course superintendent John Sutherland, who supervised construction for the next two years. The new course, a par-73 measuring 6,350 yards, opened informally on September 11, 1915, and the formal opening of the Club took place on June 1, Today, Hamilton G&CC measures 6,966 yards from the tips and par has dropped to 70, reflecting the changes on holes No. 2, 11 and 18, which used to play as par-fives and now count as fours. Club historian Les King believes Colt would have had to rely on photographs to have viewed his finished product. I don t think he would ever have seen the completed course at Ancaster through his own eyes, King notes. But through the photographs of the 1919 US- Canada match and the 1919 Canadian Open, he would surely have seen the course. For more information about Harry S. 15 Canadian Open History J. Douglas Edgar wins by 16 strokes Purse $435 Par 70, 6,470 yards 1919 A strong contingent of American players, including Francis Ouimet and a 17-year-old amateur star from Atlanta, Bobby Jones, came to Hamilton to play in a series of matches against the top Canadians and then stayed for the Open the following week. It was the first Canadian Open in five years, with the event having been cancelled during WWI. Jones led by one shot after the first round, but the tournament turned into a one-man show. J. Douglas Edgar, an Englishman transplanted to Atlanta, Georgia, went on to win the first of two Canadian Open championships. He demolished the field by shooting a then-world-record to win by an astounding 16 strokes, a margin of victory that has stood as the Canadian Open and PGA Tour record for more than 90 years. Jones, who never played in another Canadian Open in his legendary career, tied for second with Jim Barnes of St. Louis and Karl Keffer of Ottawa, the defending champion. For his victory, Edgar received a gold medal and $200. Keffer and Barnes each won $100 and silver medals. Jones, as the leading amateur, took home a gold medal, along with a silver medal for finishing in a tie for second and $100 worth of silver-plated wares. The total purse in 1919 was a whopping $435, split among the top six golfers. Hamilton G&CC Head Professional Nicol Thompson Sr. earned $10 for finishing sixth. 1. J Douglas Edgar $200 T2. 16 A playoff win for Tommy Armour Purse $1,475 Par 70, 6,470 yards 1930 The championship returned to Hamilton for what would be the longest tournament in Canadian Open history. It began on a Friday and didn t end until the following Wednesday and weather wasn t a factor. Tommy Armour, the Silver Scot, won the second of his three Canadian Open titles in a playoff with Leo Diegel, the defending two-time champion. Hometown hero Nicol Thompson Sr. opened the tourney with a 66 for a three-shot lead and remained on top of the leaderboard after the second round before falling off the pace. After playing 36 holes on Friday, the tournament was scheduled to end with 36 holes on Saturday. Armour came from five strokes off the pace with a final-round, course-record-setting 64 to tie Diegel and force a 36-hole playoff. However, tournament golf wasn t allowed on Sunday and Armour was scheduled to be in Detroit on Monday. The players agreed to come back to Hamilton to complete the 23rd Canadian Open on Wednesday in the playoff that Armour won by shooting to Diegel s Tommy Armour $ Leo Diegel $ Johnny Farrell $200 T4. Tony Manero $125 T4. Macdonald Smith $ Walter Hagen $75 7. Nicol Thompson Sr $50 The Tway it was Purse $4.2 million Par 70, 6,982 yards 2003 Hamilton G&CC received rave reviews from players and golf fans as the Canadian Open returned to Ancaster after a 70-plus-year absence. Bob Tway picked up his eighth victory on the PGA Tour and first in more than eight years in a playoff victory over Brad Faxon. After both players matched pars on the first two playoff holes, Tway won on No. 18, about an hour after he closed with a 25-foot par putt to tie Faxon at eight-under 272. It was Tway s 18th appearance in the Canadian Open and at 44 years, four months and three days, he became the oldest player at the time to win the Canadian Open, eclipsing a mark set by Kel Nagle at age 43 in Canadian sports hero and Masters Champion Mike Weir shot a final-round 69 to finish 10th at three-under. 1. 17 Jim Furyk rallies for a single-stroke victory Purse $5 million Par 70, 6,946 yards 2006 The top-ranked player in the Canadian Open walked away with a one-stroke victory, posting a 5-under 65 in the final round. Jim Furyk, a crowd favourite, started the day two strokes behind third-round leader Justin Rose and found himself in first place early on the back nine thanks to a hot putter on a cold, windy day. The 36-year-old, who had the best round of the day, finished at 14-under 266 for his second win of the season, one stroke ahead of Bart Bryant and two better than Sean O Hair. He had a five-footer for par on the final hole, but backed off three times before knocking it in to maintain a two-shot cushion. Bryant made a birdie on No. 17 but was unable to pick up another stroke on No. 18. Furyk s winning score was six shots lower than Bob Tway s winning mark at the 2003 Canadian Open thanks to rain softening the course s traditional firm and fast conditions. Still, the Hamilton G&CC layout was again a hit with players. Brantford s David Hearn was the top Canadian after a solid 2-under 68 in tough conditions. The final round effort vaulted him up 11 places to a tie for 20th, earning him a paycheque of slightly more than $50, Jim Furyk $900, Bart Bryant $540, Sean O Hair $340, Brett Quigley $240,000 T5. Jonathan Byrd $169,500 Others at T5 included Trevor Immelman, Steve Lowery, Rory Sabbatini and Camillo Villegas Hamilton Golf and Country Club 232 Golf Links Road Ancaster, Ontario, L9G 2N5
