2 Message from Commodore Watson Director General Morale and Welfare Services Life as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces is varied and exciting but it comes with its own set of unique challenges and sacrifices, not only for the members, but also, and sometimes more so, for their families that support them. And those challenges can materialize without warning, from postings, deployments, illness or injury. The National Capital Open to Support Our Troops honours serving members and veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces and their families by contributing to the Support Our Troops (SOT) Program. The Support Our Troops Program is a key element of a broad integrated network of support for currently serving members and their families, as well as veterans and their families. The Support Our Troops Program leverages support from individual Canadians, community-based groups, Corporate Canada and external organizations and foundations to translate that support into valuable morale and welfare programs and services, key elements of which are the Military Families Fund and the Soldier On Fund. Please accept my personal invitation to be part of the National Capital Open to Support Our Troops August 17 23, 2015 at Hylands Golf Club located near the Ottawa International Airport. The pages that follow present opportunities at all levels to support, from entering a Pro Am foursome, to sponsoring a hole, to becoming one of the first Founding Partners of the National Capital Open to Support Our Troops. 3 Support Our Troops (SOT) The Support Our Troops Program is an internal charitable foundation that has been created to meet the needs of the Canadian Armed Forces Community, with particular emphasis on the unique and specific challenges that members and families face, either directly or indirectly as a result of military service. The Support Our Troops Program provides support to serving members of the CAF, Veterans and their families. The Support Our Troops Program is funded completely through donations from individual Canadians and Corporate Canada, contributions from external organizations and proceeds from third party events and sale of Yellow Ribbon merchandise. The Yellow Ribbon is a highly visible symbol of the support of Canada and Canadians for their CAF. Trade-mark protection was introduced for the Yellow Ribbon in Since 2009, the Yellow Ribbon has been used to represent Support Our Troops and to formally symbolize the support of Canadians for the sacrifices made by members (current and former) of the CAF and families. The Support Our Troops Program includes the following five core programs: The Military Families Fund allows the chain of command to quickly respond to unique, unforeseen and often immediate needs of military members and their families. Helping at least 2,000 members or families annually, the support provided by the MFF complements but does not replace benefits provided by Public Funds. The Soldier On Fund was created to empower serving and former members of the CAF with a permanent or chronic physical or mental health injury and illness to adopt to an active or healthy lifestyle. Serving over 900 ill and injured members and their families, the Soldier On Fund provides individual support and offer clinics and camps that promote sporting and recreational activities. Operation Santa Claus ensures that every member of the CAF that is serving away from their family during the traditional Christmas season receives a gift package. During the Afghanistan mission, as many as 30,000 packages were distributed to deployed troops, In 2014, that number exceeded 2,500 members. The Hospital Comforts Fund ensures that those members of the CAF who are hospitalized for more than 48 hours have access to newspapers, the internet and commissary goods. This Fund annually supports at least 300 members. Boomer Legacy s Helps Soldiers Help Others in a deployed or domestic environment including support to those made most vulnerable by war and poverty.
