3 MARKY MARK CROWNED NZ S CHAMPION 2YO Congratulations to the connections of Marky Mark - Brendan & Jo Lindsay, Mike & Moira Murdoch, Leith Innes - on winning the Champion Two Year Old Title at the NZ Thoroughbred Racing Awards evening in Hamilton last night. Marky Mark was up against some stiff competition in his category including Dal Cielo, Rocanto and Serena Miss, but his performance over the season clinched the victory. Marky Mark was one of only two juveniles to win two or more blacktype races, with the other being Swiss Ace filly Secret Spirit. The Makfi gelding won 3 of his 4 starts at two including the Group 1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes at Awapuni as well as the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes at Ellerslie, with his only finish out of the money a fourth placing in the Group 1 Diamond Stakes. Marky Mark is the first Champion for his sire Makfi, himself a dual Champion Miler and Champion 3YO. Marky Mark s achievement marked the fifth time a Westbury Stud related horse has been crowned Champion 2YO, following in the hoofprints of Ruud Awakening, Ruby Clipper, Grout and Il Quello Veloce. Last night was also another cause for celebration when Westbury Stud graduate and super producer Parfore was crowned Broodmare of the Year. Parfore is by Westbury Stud s foundation sire Gold Brose, and her success as a broodmare is undisputable having produced a perfect eight winners from eight foals to race, including G1 winners Terravista and Tiger Tees, Group 2 winner Ball of Muscle, stakes winner and Group 1 perfomer Super Easy, who now stands at stud in NZ, and stakes winners and Group 3 performer Our Lukas. Out of the Twig Moss mare Classy Twiggy, Parfore hails from the amazing family that has also produced Il Quello Veloce, Donna Cattiva and Mosse.

4 REDWOOD CHARITY AUCTION Response to this auction has been fantastic in support of an amazing cause. The auction closes at 8pm on Sunday 30 August, and currently the bidding sits at $3,500, with 2 weeks still to go. REDWOOD 16 of 17 starts in blacktype company for four wins and seven placings, including winning the G1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes at Woodbine, and G1 placings in the Dubai Sheema Classic, Hong Kong Vase, and Woodbine Canadian International Stakes with total stakes of US$2,335,995. 6 STALLION PARADE The 2015 Auckland Stallion Parade will commence at 10.30am on Sunday, 23rd August at Haunui Farm where breeders will get the opportunity to view New Zealand s Champion 2YO & 3YO Sire s respectively, Iffraaj and Showcasing. Second Season Sire Ferlax will also be on parade with some of the first foals of the Group One Australian Guineas-winner also available for inspection on the day. Group Two-winner sprinter Ego will also be part of the parade, a great option for the breed to race enthusiast. At 11.45am, the parade will move to Westbury Stud where first season sire El Roca will be a star attraction among a seven-strong stallion line-up including dual Group 1 winner Reliable Man, whose first Southern Hemisphere crop are just yearlings, and will also be on parade. Once again, Haunui Farm and Westbury Stud have generously offered a free service for the 2015 season to either Ferlax or El Roca. 7 MAKFI CHALLENGE STAKES RUNNER PROFILE: PONDAROSA MISS Age/Sex: Breeding: Owner: Breeder: 5YO Bay Mare High Chaparral x Bak Da Princess S A Fletcher, D B & P G Hollinshead, C R & R J Hoyes, G R Hunt, W M Jensen, M McCullough, L & T Ropiha, Mrs K M Scott, Three In One Syndicate & C Venn D B & P G Hollinshead Victory in the G1 Makfi Challenge Stakes would not only be the icing on the cake, but also an amazing start to the racing season following a thrilling and extraordinary journey taken by Pondarosa Miss through the racing season. It started with a scintillating win on Foxbridge Plate day last August at Te Rapa, marking the arrival of an exceptional young talent on the New Zealand racing scene, before taking a horror turn at Hastings a fortnight later as a fall left the mare with serious facial injuries and an uncertain future. Vets told trainer and part-owner Peter Hollinshead the best he could hope for is that she would be a broodmare. But the remarkable mare not only recovered, but returned to race less than four months later, marking her comeback with a stunning win at Te Rapa in mid-december. She then followed up with third placings in the G1 Zabeel Classic and then again over the extreme distance of 3200 metres in the G1 Auckland Cup, despite still feeling the effects of a virus that had affected her performance when unplaced in the Thorndon Mile, Herbie Dyke Stakes and Avondale Gold Cup. Pondarosa Miss then capped off her extraordinary comeback with for a fairy tale triumph in the G1 Manco Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, entering into a three-horse war to the line as Vespa and Kawi produced enormous finishes down the centre of the track, with the trio virtually inseparable through the last 100 metres but Pondarosa Miss refused to be defeated and stuck her head out to win by a head. She s just a very good horse, Hollinshead marvelled. This is the worst preparation I ve ever given a horse, going up to two miles and then back to a mile, but she s handled it and given her all every time. It s easy to train good horses. A daughter of High Chaparral and the Danske mare Bak Da Princess, Pondarosa Miss has now had 17 starts for five wins and five placings, earning more than $235,000 in prize-money.

8 ONE TO WATCH: ALASKAN ROSE Trainer Mike Moroney is hoping Westbury Stud graduate Alaskan Rose has the X-factor after her impressive victory on debut over 1300m at Sandown Hillside on Wednesday. The filly has been nominated for the G1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield in October and the TAB bookies in Australia obviously took plenty of notice, winding her in from $101 to $15 equal-third favourite. Moroney s brother Paul recommended the purchase of the filly at the 2014 NZB Premier Yearling Sales and her impressive 4½-length win suggests her sale price could be quickly erased. Alaskan Rose powered home in the last 200m in 11.3 seconds in a performance described by Moroney as professional Just watching the fronton, she looked straight as a die for a first starter...and that has been her on the way through; she has been pretty professional all the way through. Moroney was pleased to see jockey Steven Arnold was able to use the filly s speed, and believed the Thousand Guineas was the right way to head with her. Arnold said the filly would get better She just cantered in the run and she showed a nice turn of speed at the furlong-and-a-half (300m)...Her first go couldn t have been more impressive and she gave me a pretty good feel, so she should only keep improving...i sat outside the leader and she cantered in. It s the first time I ve really gone all out on her and she really ripped from the 400m mark. By Encosta de Lago, Alasksan Rose was a $150,000 purchase at NZB Karaka Premier for Paul Moroney Bloodstock and looks to have an exciting career ahead of her. 9 BROODMARE PROFILE: UBERFRAU Each week we take a look at one of the broodmares booked in to visit or infoal to one of our resident stallions. Breeding: Owner: Breeder: Sadler s Wells x Houseproud Chris Stewart Juddmonte Farms This week we take a look at Uberfrau, an unraced Sadler s Wells mare currently infoal to young Westbury Stud sire Swiss Ace, and owned by Westbury Stud s stallion Manager Chris Stewart. Uberfrau is the dam of four named foals, all winners, including Beloved Country, a G3 winner at two, and Listed winner and G2 performer Uber Rock, herself the dam of stake performing filly War Path. Looking further back in her pedigree, one finds a strong female line replete with blacktype, with her dam the G1 winning Riverman mare Houseproud, whose blacktype resume includes victory in the G1 Longchamp Poule d Essai des Pouliches and G3 Prix de la Grotte, and second in the G1 Longchamp Prix Marcel Boussac. Uberfrau s second dam Proud Lou (by Proud Clarion) also recorded victory at the highest levels taking out the G1 Belmont Frizette S., Listed Woodbine Natalma S., second in the Listed Woodbine Duchess S., and third in the G3 Meadowlands Gardenia S., and Listed Woodbine Star Shoot Stakes. Uberfrau is booked to visit our newest stallion this year, the son of the great Fastnet Rock, El Roca, for a mating that will result in the same cross as Uber Rock.
