1 FEBRUARY 2013 EXPRESS COVERING THE THOROUGHBRED INDUSTRY IN TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA Fasig-Tipton Texas 2-Year-Olds in Training catalogue now available online Fasig-Tipton Texas has catalogued 131 head for the Wednesday, April 3, 2-Year-olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale, to be held at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. The sale begins at 12 noon with the 2-year-olds in training, which will be followed by horses of racing age. The under-tack show for the sale is at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 1. Enthusiasm is high for the reopening of Lone Star Park this year under the management of new owner Global Gaming. Consignors and buyers are ready to start off the spring/summer race season with the area s preeminent sale. This sale continues to offer buyers top pedigrees and excellent performers in the Southwest region, stated Tim Boyce, director of sales. With many more stakeswinning graduates in 2012, the back cover of the catalogue, where we feature win pictures of our grads, has become very crowded! The Texas sale continues its history of blue chip sires with Candy Ride, Curlin, English Channel, Hard Spun, Harlan s Holiday, Henrythenavigator, Holy Bull, Into Mischief, Kitten s Joy, Pioneer of The Nile, Pure Prize, Spring at Last and Yes Its True. Strong Southwest based sires are also represented by Half Ours, Private Vow, Salute the Sarge, Too Much Bling and Valid Expectations. Consignors have reacted favorably to the flexibility of the new format, allowing entries to be included much closer to the day of sale. An addendum to the catalogue, in addition to the main catalogue, will be available online and in print at the sale. The Horses of Racing Age section has attracted a lot of interest and should be an excellent venue, especially right before this exciting race meet, added Boyce. The two different categories of horses being offered complement each other and is intended to bring more owners and trainers to the auction. The catalogue may now be viewed online and will also be available via the Equineline Sales Catalogue App. The print version of the catalogue is available from all Fasig-Tipton offices and local racing secretaries. Will Rogers Downs set to open March 4 Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Oklahoma, is set to open for Thoroughbred racing on March 4 with a meet running through May 18. The track will conduct 32 days of live racing with a schedule that includes races on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays. Wednesday racing will also be offered during the month of April. The track s stakes schedule includes the $55,000 Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs Classic Distaff Sprint on April 8 and the $55,000 TRAO Classic Sprint on April 9. Both are at six furlongs for Oklahoma-breds, 3-year-olds and up. The $50,000 Clem McSpadden Memorial Route 66 for 3-year-olds and up at six furlongs is set for April 23 with the $50,000 Wilma Mankiller Memorial for fillies and mares at six furlongs on April 24. Both of those stakes are open. The meet closes with a stakes doubleheader on May 18 with the $55,000 Cherokee Nation Classic Cup and the $55,000 RPDC Classic Distaff. 3 RACING NEWS Lee Ackerley Valid Expectations becomes all-time leading Texas sire, closes in on $30 million Valid Expectations, the dominant stallion in Texas over the past decade, recently hit another milestone as he became the Lone Star State s all-time leading stallion by progeny earnings. The 20-year-old son of Valid Appeal has sired the earners of $29.7 million with a total of 394 winners and 43 stakes winners from 12 crops to race. Valid Expectations, who stands at William S. Farish s Lane s End Texas near Hempstead, surpassed the late 1983 Kentucky Derby winner and former Texas stallion Sunny s Halo, who sired the earners of $29.5 million with 20 crops to race. Valid Expectations was the first major stakes winner for trainer Steve Asmussen, and in the colors of Texas-based Ackerley Brothers Farm he compiled a record of with earnings of $596,092 and seven stakes victories, including the Grade 3 Derby Trial at Churchill Downs. He originally retired to stand in Florida for two seasons and then was relocated to Lane s End Texas by a group comprised primarily of Texans. Some of his top runners include Group 1-winning millionaire Saratoga County, Grade 2 winner The Daddy and Texas Horse of the Year Leaving on My Mind. Solar Charge shines in Bucharest Stakes A strong of field of accredited Texas-breds took to the Connally Turf Course on February 2 for the $50,000 Bucharest Stakes at five furlongs, and Solar Charge came through with a valiant effort to record the victory. Solar Charge, a 6-year-old son of Authenticate trained by Danny Pish, has run well in stakes at Sam Houston. He captured the 2012 Spirit of Texas Stakes and ran a game second in the 2013 edition of the main track sprint on January 19. Last year, he was the runner-up to Great Mills in the Champion Energy Services Stakes, a fivefurlong turf sprint, but this was a breakthrough effort. With rider Roman Chapa aboard, Solar Charge tracked Cowgirl N Up, who grabbed the lead early and retained it until the final furlong. Chapa guided the bay gelding to the outside and cleared the leader by 1 ¾ lengths. The final time of the sprint, over the firm turf course, was : Solar Charge I just had to get my horse to relax, said Chapa. We knew there was a lot of speed in the race, but Danny and I talked and wanted to get him to relax and make one big run in the end. That s what he did. Pish had just two weeks to get his charge primed for the turf following his main track Spirit of Texas effort, but Solar Charge made it easy for the top Texas horseman. We don t try to confuse him, stated Pish. We just let him do his job and not get in his way. He s a really nice horse. Solar Charge won his 12th race from 34 lifetime starts for his owners H & H Ranch of Horseshoe Bay, Texas. He earned $30,000 for the victory, sending him over the $300,000 mark in career earnings. We re very proud, said owner Carolyn Hanek who spoke on behalf of the ownership group. We love this horse. He ran a beautiful race. Cowgirl N Up won the $50,000 Yellow Rose Stakes on January 18 for owner and trainer Caroline Dodwell. The 4-year-old filly by Valor Farm stallion My Golden Song was a more than capable rival to her six male entrants in the Bucharest and had the lead until the late surge of Solar Charge. P and D Racing Stable s Ishararuler ran third for trainer Brent Davidson followed by Master Time, Deliverer, Cashinmywranglers and Lucky Raja. Salty Ridge was an early scratch. The Bucharest Stakes is named for the late Thoroughbred sprinter Bucharest, owned by Israel Flores and trained by Amos Laborde, who set track records at Sam Houston for the distance of five and one-half, six and seven furlongs. 5 RACING NEWS Manyriverstocross wins Tomball Stakes Manyriverstocross made the most of her Sam Houston Race Park on February 9 in the $50,000 Tomball Stakes, as the 4-year-old filly defeated an accomplished field of accredited Texas-bred fillies and mares in the turf race, resulting in the first stakes win of her career. Owned and bred by Robert Morgan Evans and trained by Bart Evans, the daughter of Minister Eric has now won three of her six career starts. She had captured a turf allowance last October at Remington Park and finished fourth in her only other stakes appearance, the Fiesta Mile on December 8 at Retama Park. At Sam Houston, she united with jockey Gerardo Mora, the second-leading rider at the track, and the jockey was content to stay close to the early pace set by Sera s Tunnel. They saved ground on the rail and closed with a final kick to win the 1 1 /16-mile stakes over a firm Connally turf course. Manyriverstocross was saddled by Jody Wright, who was a jockey at Sam Houston and has served as an assistant to Evans since last Skip a Smile rolls in Jersey Village Stakes Jersey Village is a residential community located a few miles west of Sam Houston Race Park that is recognized as a safe, comfortable community ideal for families. In the February 23 feature at Sam Houston, the $50,000 Jersey Village Stakes, it was Skip a Smile who returned to the comfort of the Connally Turf course, notching his second stakes of the meet. Skip a Smile was honored as 2011 Texas Horse of the Year for his owner and breeder, Rose Mary Chandler. The 6-yearold son of Skip Away had won his last two turf stakes, the $50,000 Texas Hall of Fame at Retama Park and the $50,000 Richard King on January 19 at Sam Houston. He is trained by Steve Asmussen and was ridden by Glen Murphy, who found an opening on the rail and guided the dark bay gelding to a one-length victory over a determined Doctor Romane. He s a very special horse, said Asmussen by telephone following the stakes. Turf is his best surface and Glen handled Skip a Smile the rail post well. He had plenty of horse left. Murphy, the leading rider of the 2012 Sam Houston Thoroughbred meet, concurred. I had a lot of horse under me, said Murphy. When he saw daylight, he went for it. He always knows his way to the wire. Doctor Romane, who was fourth in the Richard King for trainer Jerimiah West and owner Sonny Ellen, was a game runner-up at odds of He relaxed beautifully and ran his tail off, said jockey Jeremy Manyriverstocross March. What a great race, said Wright, who also gallops the filly for Evans. She s my baby. We always thought she would be this kind of horse; tonight she did us proud. Collier of the 4-year-old colt. He s getting better with every race. Coyote Legend, the 2012 Texas Horse of the Year, returned to the turf for the first time since finishing second to Skip a Smile in November 2011 at Remington Park. Trained by Bret Calhoun and bred by his owner Clarence Scharbaurer Jr., the 6-year-old son of Gold Legend captured the $100,000 Star of Texas on the main track last month at Sam Houston. He was mounting a bid at the top of the stretch under rider Roman Chapa but was cut off and the rider lodged a claim of foul against the winner. After a stewards review, the order of finished was not altered. Chandler and her husband, Wendell, were on hand to accept the trophy as their horse captured his 11th career win and seventh on the turf. We are so proud of him; he is an awesome individual, said Chandler. Chandler gives high praise for Skip a Smile s dam, Strawberry Smile, who has produced six foals to date. She is the sweetest horse; she licks everybody and loves her carrots, said Chandler. Skip a Smile was sent off as the heavy favorite in the eight-horse field and returned $3.40 for the win. Fly the Red Eye ran a game third for his owner Colleen Davidson, followed by Quiet Acceleration, Sarah s Chief, Coyote Legend, Spiderman Ridge and Patty s Pride. 8 RACING NEWS Makeshift, Worldventurer capture Texas Stallion Stakes A cool, clear evening at Sam Houston Race Park on February 16 set the stage for an exciting renewal of the $75,000 Jim s Orbit and the $75,000 Two Altazano divisions of the Texas Stallion Stakes. The stakes races for 3-year-olds are supported by the Texas Thoroughbred Association (TTA) for progeny of nominated Texas stallions. Six fillies were entered in the Two Altazano, a stakes renamed in 2005 to honor the prolific Texas-bred race mare who won the inaugural Sam Houston Oaks as well as the Grade 1 Coaching Club Makeshift Worldventurer American Oaks for the late Harold V. Goodman. It was another talented filly by Lane s End Texas stallion Too Much Bling who took top honors in the Two Altazano as Makeshift was victorious for owner William S. Farish. Jockey Roman Chapa sat patiently aboard the chestnut filly until he saw an opening on the rail at the top of the stretch and drew off in commanding fashion. Makeshift was making just the fourth start of her career and her stakes debut for trainer Steve Asmussen. She completed the one-mile stakes in a final time of 1:40.04 over a fast track. This was the second year in a row that Asmussen, Chapa and Farish won the Two Altazano with a filly by Too Much Bling as Color Code was the 2012 winner and also that year s Texas Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. Chapa had high praise for this filly s performance and her effort in her second start around two turns. It just takes a lot of patience, said Chapa. I had to wait and get the right opening. When I asked her to go, she did it so easily. My filly really relaxed for me. Danny Shifflett is the farm manager for Lane s End Texas, where Too Much Bling has stood since His numbers are phenomenal, said Shifflett about the stallion. This is his ninth stakes winner in three crops and 19th stakes horse. Tastefullyxcessive, bred and owned by Clarence Scharbaurer Jr. and trained by Bret Calhoun, ran second under rider Cliff Berry. She ran well for her first time going a mile, said Berry about the daughter of Valor Farm stallion Early Flyer. Platinum Song ran third for trainer Danny Pish and rider Gerardo Mora. The daughter of Valor Farm stallion My Golden Song was honored earlier in the evening as the Texas Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. Her owner Scott Brown was on hand to accept the award at the annual TTA Meeting and Awards Banquet. Sent off as the second betting choice, Makeshift paid $6.40 for the win and added $45,000 to her career bankroll. Six colts and geldings went to the starting gate in the $75,000 Jim s Orbit division, also at one mile. The stakes honors Jim s Orbit, a multiple graded stakes champion owned and bred by James E. Cottrell whose most notable victory came in the Grade 2 Ohio Derby in Worldventurer ($3.40) held the experience edge in the Jim s Orbit, fresh off a victory in the seven-furlong $50,000 Groovy Stakes on opening weekend. Cliff Berry had the return call for trainer Bret Calhoun and tracked the pacesetter Meme Jo, who completed the first quarter in :24.51 and the half-mile in : Wordventurer rallied on the outside and crossed the wire in 1: The son of Valor Farm Wimbledon was bred by Clarence Scharbaurer Jr. and runs for Wesley Melcher of Dallas. This victory marked the fourth win from 10 starts for Worldventurer, who topped $200,000 in career earnings with the Jim s Orbit score. He ran a really great race, said Calhoun. He been a good horse for us as a 2-year-old and is starting his 3-year-old season very well. Cliff does a great job for us and had the horse placed perfectly. Melcher accepted the Texas Champion 2-Year-Old Colt/ Gelding Award at the TTA awards ceremony for Worldventurer and continues to be proud of the striking gray gelding, who he bought for just $14,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Texas Summer Yearling Sale. Bret s done a great job with him, commented Melcher. The horse has been amazing and has gotten better in every race. I was a little worried when I saw the fractions, but when he got away, I knew he had it as he always closes well. This was the stakes debut for Meme Jo, a son of Too Much Bling who is trained by Karl Broberg and owned by End Zone Athletics Inc. He ran good and is really starting to figure things out, Murphy said of runner-up Meme Jo. He put his heart into it.
