1 THE The Official Newsletter of The Yorkshire Racing Club Winning P st Meeting First Tuesday of each month at 8.00pm Headquarters: The Pudsey Liberal Club, Lowtown, Pudsey, LS28 7BQ April 2017 The Aintree Answers 2017 Once again we held our Aintree Preview but this time with new faces from Timeform and what a team they proved to be. In the past we have had Adam Brookes and Ben Fearnley. Unfortunately Ben was not available due to his schedule with Racing UK. They obviously recognise his talents as we do. Adam has now left Timeform and has now commenced work with Qatar Racing at the Tweenhills Stud down in Gloucestershire. Halifax to the Cotswolds seems a pretty good swap to me. We wish him all the best. The new boys Phil Turner and Nick Seddon could not provide us with the Grand National winner but boy did they excel in some of the other races. The seven races on the first day provided four winners, including Dineur winning at 16/1. 20/1 and even 25/1 were easily available on the course. Day two on the Friday, started off with a bang, Rather Be winning the first race at 10/1. 14 s were available on the course. Our guests tipped three winners on the second day! The deliberations for the Saturday obviously concentrated on the Grand National but unfortunately our pundits were not able to give us the winner of the National, which we all covert and consequently use the bragging rights to maximum effect! Several placed horses were tipped with the lone winner being Finians Oscar tipped by Nick. Altogether, it was a very enjoyable evening providing excellent entertainment. The downside however, was the very poor attendance! Those members who didn t make it missed some superb information. Nigel (Trigger Taylor) had one of his complicated permed selections for the Exacta in the Grand National. He was successful and got the first 6 placed horses! No he did not make a fortune as he had that many selections. Told you it was complicated! Our thanks go out to Phil and Nick, their tips and the results of each race are tabled on Pages 3 & 4. 7 WINTER SATURDAY NAP 2016/17 Saturday 25th March What a change in the weather as all today s cards were held in sunny conditions, with drying grounds. The top valued jumps race was 2½-mile handicap hurdle, with 26,000 going to the winning stable. While on his recent journey to Sedgefield, Brian Hemsworth met trainer Nigel Hawke in a bar, and there must have been some inside information as Brian napped Hawke s DEAUVILLE CRYSTAL, the eventual 9/1 winner of the said race. Jean Batty is generally a strong follower of Richard Fahey, and it stood her in good stead today as top weight KIMBERELLA took a Class 2 five-furlong sprint on Lingfield s polytrack. With Paul Hanagan on board, KIMBERELLA won at 11/2, going away from his nearest rival. WARRIOR S TALE was driven home by jockey Sean Bowen after 2½-miles on Newbury s Chase Course. The 9/2 winner was the selection of John Hanna and Lee Sabin. In John s case it was his third winner of the month and moved him into third spot overall. There was a blanket finish in a 1½-mile race at Lingfield, with SYNODIC just prevailing under jockey Joe Fanning. The 10/3 second favourite was the choice of Gill Morland, while Geoff Holgate had to wait until the very last race of the day for his winning nap. This was TASAABOQ, ridden by Josephine Gordon at 5/2. Finally John Walker kept in touch with the leaders with a 9/4 winning nap, YALA ENKA who took a 3¼-mile chase at Kelso. With five months completed we now move into the final weeks of the Winter Competition. With the Grand National coming up in a couple of weeks time, we have seen before how things can change if a big priced winner takes that race. Saturday 1st April Today s Lincoln meeting on Town Moor at Doncaster is the traditional curtain raiser for the Flat season. Jockey Ryan Moore made an explosive start to the meeting, winning the first three races. The second one of these was on top weight BALLET CONCERTO in the Spring Mile Handicap, and the 8/1 winner was the selection of John Ratcliffe and Mick Robson. Well over 60% of the days naps were at Doncaster, but these were the only successful ones. Mick Copley chose Chelmsford for his nap and was rewarded with the 5/2 winner of a 2-mile race, MASTERSON. Trainer Mick Channon s horse showed at 8/1 in the morning so was obviously well fancied and won by 2½ lengths easing down under jockey Sylvester De Sousa. So a quiet week for winners, which meant no change to the top 26, spots in the overall list. Saturday 8th April Friday was Ladies Day at the Aintree course, but Saturday proved to be a day for the ladies in the Winter Saturday Nap. Twenty-two different horses were selected by members in the Grand National, but only two were successful when ONE FOR ARTHUR romped home at 14/1. Both Viv Hall and Diane Ransome chose Lucinda Russell s horse, which became only the second Scottish trained winner in history. A lot of the credit must go to jockey Derek Fox, who came back from breaking both his wrist and his collarbone less than a month earlier. With just three more weeks to go in this Competition Viv and Diane moved themselves into 5th and 7th spots respectively, giving themselves a chance to challenge for top spot. Geoff Holgate ignored Aintree and instead selected NEZAR, an 11/5 winner of a 6-furlong sprint on Wolverhampton s all weather Tapeta track. There were just two more winning naps, with John Hanna and Simon Pearce going for the comfortable winner HORROOB in a 7-furlong race on Lingfield s all weather. HORROOB was ridden by Andrea Atzeni for the Roger Varian Stable and was successful at 4/11. Continued on page 8 THE YORKSHIRE RACING CLUB 7

8 Saturday 15th April Winning naps were again at a premium, with just four successful choices, although the Yorkshire Post Formnap selected 9/2 winner BALLYBOLLEY, Whilst the Formnap proved a help to a number of members, Jake Lyons did make BALLYBOLLEY his nap of the day. In doing so Jake strengthened his position at the top of the overall list, and is now in a strong position to win the Competition for a second time. John Ransome moved up the list when finding his seventh winning nap. His choice was POTTERS APPROACH, the winner of 3¼-mile hurdle race at Stratford. POTTERS APPROACH had just over a length to spare under jockey Gavin Sheehan for the Warren Greatrex stable. With just four opponents, BEAU MINSTREL had a fairly easy task in taking the last race at Brighton over six furlongs. Despite racing keenly jockey William Carson led all the way, and won at 11/4 giving John Hanna a winning nap. This put John in second spot overall, and in a good position to challenge for the top in the next two weeks. Jean Batty is a strong supporter of jockey Sylvester De Sousa, and it was no surprise her nap was for 7/4 winning favourite AMOMENTOFMADNESS over five-furlongs at Kempton. Their is a Flat syndicate that is run by Paul Mathewman. If anyone is interested can they please contact him on paul.mathewman@btconnect.com Paul left the area some years ago and now lives in the Nottinghamshire area. Charity Night Our Charity event plus auctions raised a total of 800. The committee voted to add 200 and round the figure up to This will be passed to the usual racing charities. We thank all our members for their generous contributions. 8 THE YORKSHIRE RACING CLUB

10 A TINY BIT MORE FROM THE LIFE OF BRIAN Well that s another couple of festivals over, both Cheltenham and Aintree provided the usual highs and lows of national hunt racing, at Cheltenham one of the biggest hero s was a man called Phil Smith, the official British handicapper, who was savaged for assessing the Irish trained runners 2lb higher than in Ireland, but was proved right, 7 of the 10 handicaps went to the emerald isle with joint top weights finishing first and second in the County Hurdle, Mr Smith even got an apology off Jockey Davy Russell after his easy win on Presenting Percy. I wonder if anyone watched the item on Martin Pipe during the Cheltenham coverage, it proved what an innovative and also eccentric trainer he was, he had his own laboratory, making sure his horses blood counts were always spot on, this matched to getting them super fit made his charges formidable on the track, yet he also liked to paint the interiors of his stables with murals of woodlands and sunsets and the like, as he was sure it helped keep his stars relaxed. The YRC has had an association with trainer Malcolm Jefferson since the 1980 s when he trained owners club horse Dick E Bear to win, and others including Tindari who won for us at the 1994 Cheltenham Festival, so I was sad to hear from old mate Nigel Taylor who still has a horse in the yard, that Malcolm had been very ill, so it seems like justice that his current crop of horse s are giving him a best season ever, this was seen at Aintree with Cloudy Dream and Mount Mews running excellent races finishing 2nd in grade 1 s and Double W s winning the Red Rum chase, I have never known Malcolm to be so emotional as he was in the interview with Alice Plunkett afterwards, and hope he s back in the pink soon. Popular opinion by pundits and tipsters in the Grand National was that the 1st and 2nd One for Arthur and Cause of Causes were the 2 horse s that were likely to get to far behind on the first circuit to be able to get a blow in at the finish, just shows what a funny old game it is. Now I don t know about you but I always got the impression that owner Rich Ricci was what my Irish mate called a loud Yank, but after winning the mares novice at Cheltenham with Lets Dance reflected on his season so far, after Vautor s death and losing Faugheen and Annie Power to injury said, THE UP S AND DOWNS IN THIS GAME ARE BRUTAL, THEY D TAME A LION. Well said Rich, owners, trainers, jockey s and punters all over the world will agree with that. DEAR MEMBERS, WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! Attracting guest speakers to the Club for our monthly meetings is a difficult job, especially as we are asking them to give up their time for free! For these guests to turn up and be presented with a very small turnout is quite disconcerting and indeed, sometimes very embarrassing. In an attempt to rectify this situation, we are asking for your help by putting forward any thoughts and suggestions you may have regarding this issue. For example: Do we hold too many meetings? Are the guests of the right type? Should there be more trips? These are some of the questions the Committee have posed. We have received a few other useful suggestions, but we would still like to receive more. We hope that Members will help us ensure that the Yorkshire Racing Club maintains its status as one of the top remaining Racing Clubs in the country. 10 THE YORKSHIRE RACING CLUB

11 Toboggan s Fire Race Report: - Saturday 25th March, Wolverhampton, Standard, Class 4, 1m 141yds Handicap. Toboggan s Fire came into the race having had plenty of work at home, but with Ann thinking she may need the race, but also saying she tends to go well fresh. She looked really well in the paddock and was wearing a cross nosed band for the first time, in order to help her settle. In the race itself she broke ok, but not brilliantly and Joey had to settle her in fifth place about 3 or 4 lengths off the leader. This was a position she held round the first bend and down the back straight. With about 4 furlongs to go, she was probably a bit further back than Joey probably wanted to be with her, so began to shake her up, but still travelling ok. As they came around the final bend Joey pulled her to the outside so that he was in a position to mount a challenge when they came into the straight. As they came into the straight, Joey took her into the middle of the track and quickly got her in a challenging position. Once she got to the hind quarters of the leader and with about a furlong and a half to go, the pair battled it out all the way to the line and it was probably just on the line that she got her head in front, eventually winning by a head, with 1½ lengths back to the 3rd. Joey Haynes gave her a very good ride. Trainer Feedback:- Ann was delighted with her win and said what a game filly she was. She wasn t sure if she might have just needed the run. She did say that she needed that extra 141yds at the end. Jockey Feedback:- Joey said what a tough filly she was and what a trier! He said that it suited her that they went fast in the early stages as it brought her stamina into play. He feels that she would easily get 1m 2f+. Future Plans:- She came out of the race well having eaten up and trotted up the following morning, only losing 4 kilos for the run. We ve learnt from previous years, that she doesn t want her races too soon together, so she will have at least two weeks before she runs again. If the ground is soft enough there are plenty of races coming up for her on the turf. Alan Crombie Answers to Pete s Posers - April 2017 The Pictures are: 6. Fleetwood Town 1. Roger Black 7. 12 What s on at the YRC The meeting will start promptly at 8pm. Michael Kipper Herrington does not come from a racing family, born in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire he grew up being a keen cricketer & sportsman representing Yorkshire at Cricket until the age of 15. When he left school at 16 weighing only 6 stone he went to the British Racing School in Newmarket having never sat on a horse! First job was as an apprentice with Richard Whitaker, where he had a few rides on the flat. Followed by riding as a conditional for Mary Reveley, where he a good few rides & 5 winners. Michael went on to gain his HGV licence and work as a travelling head lad for David Nicholls, which included travelling to Hong Kong & Sweden with Group horses. Michael s last position before taking out his trainers licence was as Travelling Head Lad followed by Assistant Trainer for Kevin Ryan. Our annual trip to York Races is on Saturday 27th May Full details appear on Page 5 When we asked for suggestions in the magazine Jonathan Ash wondered if members would like to do car share for weekend visits to the races. Jonathan can be contacted on jonathanash90@hotmail.com. MORE ARTICLES WANTED FOR THE WINNING POST! We have lost a number of regular contributors in the last twelve months, so we usually have some space available for newbies to try their hand at writing a racing-related article for the club magazine. As a first try, you may wish to limit yourself to just one page, although if you are more confident, a longer article may be worth a go! Pictures to complement the article are always welcome as they help the reader to visualise the main thread of the article. So...
