PAGE 2 Sunday, March 31, 2013 DRF BREEDING Catching up with TED BASSETT AT 91, STILL INVOLVED IN INDUSTRY AND ISSUES By Glenye Cain Oakford If you want to catch up with Ted Bassett, you have to move at a brisk trot. The former Keeneland Association chairman, now trustee emeritus at age 91, has a full schedule, starting with an important morning ritual: feeding the family pets at Lanark Farm, the Midway, Ky., property that Bassett s wife, Lucy, inherited from her father in All of our pets were strays, Bassett said. We have three cats. We just lost our dog about a year and a half ago, and I haven t been able to overcome his passing. I am the designated food-preparer for the menagerie. They re all meowing and calling, so I start there and then I come to the Keeneland kitchen and find out what s going on in the world. It s a great international crossroads, our kitchen. All sorts of interesting people drop in, and we have a lot of visitors from out of state. So that usually starts my day on a bright note. And a healthy one. Keeneland s track kitchen is beloved for its hearty eggand-bacon breakfasts as much as for its conviviality, but Bassett takes the high road gastronomically. Same thing every morning: It starts off with V8 juice, hot tea, and bran with banana and raisins, Bassett said. And I go back in the back and help em do it. They peel the banana, and I ll pour the V8 juice. Not surprisingly, Bassett pays close attention to Thoroughbred industry issues and debates not just as an industry leader, but as a farm owner. His wife owns eight mares at Lanark, and, Bassett said, Today, we re going through some of the same trials and tribulations that most mid-range breeders are going through. The broodmare band is getting older, as are we, and it s very difficult to keep the quality of your broodmares up unless you re able to race a good filly that has earned some black type to qualify as a broodmare. But the farm is, I d say, maintaining itself. We raise a large number of cattle and are contemplating a larger acreage of corn this coming year. Lanark traditionally sells its yearlings at the Keeneland September sale, most recently through Mill Ridge s agency. Mrs. Bassett is the total boss, and she consults regularly with John Williams, who is her sort of guru for the last 10 or 12 years, Bassett said. He s been very professional and takes great pains over the matings, inspecting each stallion to see about conformation. When it comes to racing, Bassett understandably is bullish on synthetic surfaces. Keeneland became the second U.S. track to make that transition for racing when KEENELAND Former Keeneland chairman Ted Bassett runs Lanark Farm with wife, Lucy. it installed Polytrack on its main oval in I think it was the right thing to do, and we did it primarily for the safety and the welfare of the horse, Bassett said. I think in the intervening years that it s proved out to be a safer surface. Bassett won t be drawn out about his views on race-day Salix, but said he was surprised and somewhat concerned when the Breeders Cup board of which he used to be a member reversed plans to expand its Salix ban from the 2-year-old championship races to all its championship weekend events. Prominent racehorse owner Gary West had threatened to sue over the Salix ban s proposed expansion. I m concerned whether that would be establishing a precedent, Bassett said. If you have a strong difference of opinion between the two parties the pro-[salix] and the anti-[salix] I m concerned that it s now going to come down to the threat of litigation or boycott instead of negotiation. I was also somewhat concerned about the seeming imperative need to make a decision of this nature six months from the event. You d have thought that, with that time interval, it seemed that time did provide for additional negotiation and possible compromise. I want to make it very clear, he added firmly, that I have not been privy to the pertinent details of the discussion that went on. This is merely the view of an outsider. Bassett applauded West for his offer to put $1 million toward a study of Salix and its effects. That s a positive thing to do, Bassett said. But there has to be some consideration that, when you have findings from the research, there is some commitment to accept them. It doesn t do any good to continue the research ad infinitum and go on with the continued controversy. Bassett retired as Keeneland s chairman in 2001, but he s still a strong presence and not just figuratively. He shares what he calls a hideaway office, a stone house just east of the Keeneland entertainment center, with former Keeneland treasurer Stan Jones. The building, incidentally, once served as Daily Racing Form s Lexington office. Now it s the base of operations for Bassett s numerous activities and charitable campaigns. A decorated veteran who served in World War II with the 4th Marine Regiment, 6th Marine Division, Bassett currently chairs the Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Kentucky. He co-founded Lexington s Marine Corps Breakfast, which started as a breakfast in Keeneland s track kitchen with cold eggs, overdone bacon, and coffee, Bassett said. He s also instrumental in the Salute to the Legends of the Corps, which honors a Medal of Honor winner and raises funds for the Wounded Warrior Project to benefit former service members in need. The Marine Corps culture stays for life with at least 90 percent of the Marines that have gone through, Bassett said. Once a Marine, always a Marine. I was just an average 19- or 20-year-old young man when I joined. The Marine Corps, fundamentally, tries to take a nobody and make a somebody out of him. Each of us that has gone through that cauldron of Parris Island or San Diego feel a pride in being able to survive it. It s tough, intense discipline. You re taken down to being a nobody, and they try through various trials and tribulations to build your self-confidence and build you up into somebody reaching the standards of what they expect a Marine to be. One of Bassett s more unusual projects for 2013: He s chairing the Hound Welfare Fund s June 1 dinner and auction at the 133-year-old Iroquois Hunt Club in Lexington. The HWF funds the care of the Iroquois hounds when they retire from hunting. (In the interest of full disclosure, the HWF was co-founded by this reporter.) The HWF s similarity to Thoroughbred retirement programs appealed to him, Bassett said, as did its potential to serve as a prototype for the nation s other hunt clubs. I m not a member of a hunt club, but I have a great affinity and love for dogs, he said. Here, the object is to give these older hounds or ones that are no longer able to run the chase an opportunity to retire in a healthy environment and live their lives out in ease after giving so much of themselves to the interest and competitiveness of the hunt. JAMES E. TED BASSETT Born: Oct. 26, 1921 Birthplace: Lexington, Ky. Residence: Midway, Ky. Education: Yale Positions: Past president and chairman of Keeneland Association; past president of Breeders Cup Ltd.; past president of Thoroughbred Racing Associations; member of The Jockey Club; former trustee of the National Museum of Racing, University of Kentucky Equine Research Foundation, and Transylvania University; former director of the Kentucky State Police Honors: Eclipse Award of Merit; Thoroughbred Club of America s Honored Guest There s something about Keeneland, Bassett says, that makes an employee want to contribute to the wider community. His official Keeneland career might have ended after 43 years, but in many ways he s still an ambassador. The community looks upon Keeneland as sort of a national park, said Bassett, who has led capital campaigns for everything from the YMCA to the Kentucky Blood Center to the Save the Calumet Trophies effort. As a result, there s always been a good, strong relationship between Keeneland and the community, and most of us through the years have served on a number of community organizations and civic boards. It s part of being Keeneland s president or an employee. When the community calls, you want to respond to the particular need.

DRF BREEDING Sunday, March 31, 2013 PAGE 3 Santa Anita Derby winners make the grade as sires By John P. Sparkman The best all-around American sire of the first decade of the 21st century, especially on dirt, was 1992 Santa Anita Derby winner A.P. Indy. Seattle Slew s best son led the North American sire list twice (2003 and 2006), sired two classic winners and nine champions, and established a thriving sire line. Of course, A.P. Indy won an important race or two after the Santa Anita Derby, namely the Belmont Stakes and Breeders Cup Classic, but with the 2013 version of the race place s premier 3-year-old event coming up April 6, his success raises an interesting question: Is A.P. Indy s success as a sire typical of Santa Anita Derby winners or the exception? To answer that question, it is useful to have a measuring stick or two. What constitutes success for a stallion? How do Santa Anita Derby winners compare with winners of other big races? Traditionally, stallion success has been evaluated by measures such as number and percentage of stakes winners, earnings, and earnings index, but, in truth, by far the most important measure of stallion success in the contemporary world is the big horse. Stallions who sire champions and Grade 1 and Group 1 winners, particularly juvenile champions and classic winners especially early in their careers quickly become the darlings of commercial and private breeders and earn the opportunity to cover the best mares in the world, all but guaranteeing further success. Previous studies by this author have shown that the two best races at predicting sire success over the past couple of decades have been the Preakness Stakes and the Breeders Cup Classic. Somewhat surprisingly, the Kentucky Derby has not been quite as good at producing top sires. As shown in the table on page 4, by some measures at least, Santa Anita s race is just as good, if not slightly better, at producing sires than the Churchill Downs classic has been since The table details the number of foals ages 3 and older, number of stakes winners, percentage of stakes winners from foals, number of champions in major racing countries, and top horses sired by all the males who won each race since 1990 and who have at least 5-year-olds currently racing. Over the time period in question, four geldings won the Santa Anita Derby, while only one, Funny Cide, won in Kentucky. So, in effect, there are 15 Kentucky Derby winners who have had legitimate chances to prove their worth at stud to date and only 11 Santa Anita Derby winners. Each race produced one winner who PHOTOS BY Z can be described as great, plus at least A.P. Indy, the 1992 Santa Anita one other horse who could be legitimately Derby winner, has established a thriving sire line. Continued on page 4

PAGE 4 Sunday, March 31, 2013 DRF BREEDING WINNERS AS SIRES described as successful. Kentucky Derby winner Unbridled succeeded in almost exactly the same way as A.P. Indy. Unbridled never led the sire list, but he sired three classic winners, one more than A.P. Indy, four champions, and two very successful sons, Empire Maker and Unbridled s Song, each of whom has a chance to extend Unbridled s male line. Unbridled s percentage of stakes winners was never as high as A.P. Indy s, but despite very similar credentials when they retired to stud each was a juvenile stakes winner, classic winner, Breeders Cup Classic winner, and sibling to a Grade 1 winner Unbridled did not attract anything comparable to the quality of mares A.P. Indy did until much later in his stud career. While Indian Charlie, the secondbest Santa Anita Derby-winning sire, was a statistically better sire than any of the second-best Kentucky Derby-winning sires, there are more moderately successful sires among the winners at Churchill than at Santa Anita. The late Indian Charlie could only finish third on a dicey leg at Churchill Downs, but he turned out to be a much more consistent sire than his Derby-winning stable companion of that year, Real Quiet. Indian Charlie was a better sire overall than either Thunder Gulch or Fusaichi Pegasus, probably the next two best sires among Kentucky Derby winners in the period under review. His 8.6 percent stakes winners is more than double either of those Kentucky Derby winners, although both of them had the disadvantage from a statistical point of view of serving shuttle seasons and covering far more mares and many, many more questionable ones than did Indian Charlie. Fusaichi Pegasus has sired twice as many foals as Indian Charlie, and Thunder Gulch almost three times as many. Perhaps partly as a result, both Thunder Gulch and Fusaichi Pegasus have sired as many or more genuinely good horses as Indian Charlie, though not as many champions. Point Given, Thunder Gulch s best son, is the third-best Santa Anita Derby-winning sire of the period. Very much like his sire, Point Given can sire very good horses, but he is not at all consistent, as witnessed by his figure of 4 percent stakes winners. As a general rule, Kentucky Derby winners are going to get better initial opportunities than Santa Anita Derby winners, so it is no surprise that Sea Hero, Strike the Gold, Grindstone, Smarty Jones, and Giacomo, all of whom would be considered failures by commercial breeders, have much better statistics on the whole than any of the other Santa Anita Derby winners. Horses like Mister Frisky, Brocco, Free House, and Came Home, all seen as pretty good Santa Anita Derby winners in their day, did the race no favors as a predictor of sire success. The bottom line is that it generally takes a better horse to win the Kentucky Derby than the Santa Anita Derby. But a good horse is a good horse. Although neither A.P. Indy nor Indian Charlie won the Kentucky Derby though each would have started as the favorite had A.P. Indy been able to run both were talented enough to win the Derby in an average year. Among the other Santa Anita Derby winners under consideration, only Point Given, who probably would have won had he not gotten too wound up before the race, and possibly Free House, meet that criterion. If the 2013 winner of the Santa Anita Derby is a good-enough racehorse, his chances of being a good sire are as good as the winner of any other race in the world. Six weeks ago, 3-year-olds Govenor Charlie and Midnight Lucky won maiden races in impressive fashion at Santa Anita during the same weekend that Shakin It Up provided Midnight Lute with his first graded stakes winner as a sire. Last weekend at Sunland Park, Govenor Charlie and Midnight Lucky all but stamped their tickets to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, respectively, with dominant performances in two-turn races. Govenor Charlie drew clear at the quarter pole and powered to a five-length win in the Grade 3 Sunland Derby, covering 1 1/8 miles in a track-record 1:47.54 and earning a 95 Beyer Speed Figure. Midnight Lucky entered the Sunland Park Oaks as one of the most talked-about horses in the country following her smashing debut win in February, in which she earned a 100 Beyer, and the filly left New Mexico with even more hype after she obliterated the competition in an eight-length romp. Midnight Lucky traveled 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.06, good for a 94 Beyer and another track record (one of three set March 24 on Sunland s speed-favoring oval). Both 3-year-olds earned 50 points on the Road to the Derby and Oaks standings. If both Govenor Charlie and Midnight Lucky make the trip to Churchill Downs, they will bring the longtime owner-trainer partnership of Mike Pegram and Bob Baffert back to the site of some of their most cherished memories, starting with Real Quiet s Kentucky Derby win in Continued on page 7

DRF BREEDING Sunday, March 31, 2013 PAGE 7 HOT SIRE COADY PHOTOGRAPHY Midnight Lucky, a daughter of Midnight Lute, crushes the field in the Sunland Oaks under jockey Rafael Bejarano. Pegram bred and owns Govenor Charlie, while Midnight Lucky was bred in Kentucky by Dr. Charles Kidder, J. K. Griggs, and Linda Griggs. Pegram owns the filly with Karl Watson and Paul Weitman, comprising the triumvirate that has struck Grade 1 gold in recent years with Lookin At Lucky, Coil, Drill, and Executiveprivilege. Midnight Lute, a strapping son of Real Quiet out of the unraced Dehere mare Candytuft, was the first top-of-the-line horse campaigned by the partnership of Pegram, Watson, Weitman, and Baffert, and as a juvenile, he won first out in the summer of 2005 at Del Mar. The colt did not race again for a year, however, as respiratory problems developed that would stall his career more than once and cause him to miss the Triple Crown season. Once back in training, Midnight Lute began to fulfill his potential in 2006 and early 2007, winning a Grade 3 event at seven furlongs and competing well in longer-distance, graded stakes in California in January and February He suffered another health-related delay during early summer, but when he returned, Midnight Lute was at the top of his game. He dominated both the Forego Stakes and the Breeders Cup Sprint that fall, earning the Eclipse Award as champion sprinter. In 2008, Midnight Lute raced only twice as a 5-year-old but did win a second consecutive Breeders Cup Sprint before retiring to stud at Hill n Dale in Lexington, Ky. Baffert said upon Midnight Lute s retirement that the horse was the best he d ever trained, and those who follow the popular conditioner Twitter account are reminded of that every time they receive a message from Baffert. Midnight Lute stood for $20,000 in his initial season at Hill n Dale, and, according to farm President John G. Sikura, he has been popular from the outset. Baffert said in February after Shakin It Up s win in the San Vicente that he always felt Midnight Lute was, at his core, a longer-distance horse who, due to low lung capacity, was restricted to sprint races, and Sikura echoed that opinion when discussing his potential as a stallion. [Midnight Lute s reputation] is really a misnomer because the horse is not a sprinter; he was backed up after throat surgery, Sikura said. He was backed up to be a sprinter. It was an adaptation. The horse s true aptitude, I believe, is a mile and a quarter. I think that s what he would have been best at. He was just a big, freaky racehorse that could adapt and do anything. We actually thought that his foals would not be early [maturing], that they would not emerge as 2-year-olds, that they would train on and get two turns, he added. That s where the money is. That s what the [majority of] Grade 1s are. In the long run, quality is about two turns and about getting a trip, and I believe these ones will do both. Midnight Lute covered 115 mares in 2012, and Sikura said a similar number easily will be reached this year at what is now a bargain fee of $15,000. Pegram s broodmare band is boarded at Hill n Dale, and for Govenor Charlie and Shakin It Up (who finished fourth in the Sunland Derby), their development into stakes winners has truly been a case of keeping it in the family. Both are out of daughters of Silverbulletday, Pegram s sensational dual champion from the late 1990s who joined trainer Baffert as a Racing Hall of Fame inductee in Govenor Charlie is out of the unraced Storm Cat mare Silverbulletway, who is also the dam of stakes winner Crisis of Spirit, and Shakin It Up is the second winning foal out of the unraced Vindication mare Silver Bullet Moon. Midnight Lucky, who may train up to the Kentucky Oaks on May 3, is the fourth winning foal out of the Citidancer mare Citiview. Citiview is a full sister to Hookedonthefeelin, whom Pegram purchased for $110,000 at the 1997 Keeneland September yearling sale. Hookedonthefeelin was the winner of five stakes, including the Grade 1 La Brea. As a broodmare, Hookedonthefeelin has produced Pussycat Doll, a Real Quiet three-time Grade 1 winner for Pegram and Baffert during the mid-2000s, as well as Grade 1 winner Jimmy Creed and stakes winner Funny Feeling. Given those connections, it was no surprise when Pegram purchased Midnight Lucky for $220,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale. A year and a half later, the filly has displayed a breathtaking degree of raw talent in only two races that may, in the end, make her the best of what is shaping up to be a very good, and possibly great, first crop for Midnight Lute. His yearling average took a dip last year, which is not uncommon in this era as stallions move beyond their first crop at auction, but Midnight Lute was represented by a $230,000 juvenile at the recent Barretts March sale of selected 2-year-olds in Quiet American Really Blue Dehere Bolt From the Blue Dixieland Band Willamae Allen s Prospect Jovial Joy Fappiano Demure Believe It Meadow Blue Deputy Minister Sister Dot Blue Times Berkut Northern Dancer Mississippi Mud Tentam Raclette Mr. Prospector Change Water Rollicking Nordic Joy training. There s a lot of prospects out there, and we re excited, and we re sure that there s many more in the wings, Sikura said. The more they win, and the more important fixtures that come under Midnight Lute s banner, the more his yearlings will bring. If he has a Derby winner, or an Oaks winner, or a Travers winner, certainly they re more appreciated in the auction ring.

DRF BREEDING Sunday, March 31, 2013 PAGE 9 SYNTHETIC SIRES: OVERALL QUALITY CAN TRUMP A TURF PEDIGREE By Joe Nevills When the first major racetracks began converting their dirt main tracks to synthetic surfaces in the mid-2000s, it added a new element to the sport. While it seemed as if synthetic was just a substitute for dirt, that was not the case, as all observers of racing quickly found out, and it put every stallion in North America at the same starting point: Who would be a good sire of runners on synthetic surfaces? Six years later, leaders and laggards have sorted themselves out on synthetic, but a generation of runners has proven the timeless adage that a good sire can get winners on any surface. Artificial surfaces now typically carry the reputation of favoring horses bred for turf. During the recent Spiral Stakes card at Turfway Park, which features a Polytrack surface, the winning connections of both the Grade 3 Spiral and the Bourbonette Oaks cited their horses ability on turf as a main reason for pointing their horses for the Turfway races. However, the belief that a turf-laden pedigree will equate to success on synthetic tracks is far from universal. That s baloney, said Mark Casse, a perennial leading trainer at Woodbine, which has Polytrack as its main surface. I do believe that we have three surfaces; that some horses prefer one over others, but I can tell you there are a lot of turf horses that won t run over synthetic, as well. The numbers support the notion that the best allaround sires also make the best sires of synthetic runners. Of the top 20 North American stallions by total progeny earnings since 2006 the first full year for modern all-weather surfaces in North America 12 are also among the top 20 by lifetime synthetic earnings. Ten sires each reside in both top 20 lists by starts and wins, as well. On comparative lists with the top 20 turf sires since 2006, 11 cross over as leading earners on synthetic and turf, while seven are on both lists by starts and nine by wins. Arguably the most successful all-around sire in the synthetic era has been Smart Strike, who is the only stallion in North America with 100 or more progeny starts on synthetic surfaces to reside in the top 15 by all-time synthetic wins, earnings, and earnings per start, as well as by win percentage among sires with 500 or more synthetic surface starts. The 21-year-old son of Mr. Prospector stands at Lane s End in Versailles, Ky. His most prominent runners on synthetics include champion Lookin At Lucky, Grade 1 winners Furthest Land and Square Eddie, Grade 2 winners Papa Clem and Striking Dancer, and Grade 3 winners Air Support, Strike Softly, Smart Surprise, and Smart Sting. Smart Strike s success has been universal, regardless of surface, as he is North America s leading sire by earnings on all surfaces since 2006, and the second-leading sire of earners on turf in that time frame. He s a sire that I think is widely recognized as one that gets both dirt and turf runners, so the fact that his offspring would act on a third surface isn t that surprising, said Bill Farish of Lane s End. He s just a very versatile sire in general, and when you offer up that third surface, they run well on that as well. Another stallion that has shown across-the-board PHOTOS BY Z Smart Strike, who stands at Lane s End Farm, has progeny who have had success on dirt, synthetic, and turf. Continued on page 10

PAGE 10 Sunday, March 31, 2013 DRF BREEDING SYNTHETIC SIRES success is Tiznow, who is the only sire other than Smart Strike to be in the top 20 among those with 100 or more all-weather progeny starts by wins, earnings and earnings per start. His leading synthetic winners include Canadian champion Bear Now and Grade 1 winners Well Armed, Colonel John and Tough Tiz s Sis. Tiznow, a 16-year-old Cee s Tizzy horse, stands at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky. The Mr. Prospector sire line has proven especially useful on all-weather surfaces. The legendary Claiborne stallion ranks second among sires of sires by earnings, and five of his sons also inhabit the top 20 of that list: Gone West, Seeking the Gold, Forty Niner, Carson City, and Machiavellian. An additional two from his male line, Unbridled and his son Unbridled s Song, are also on that list, giving Mr. Prospector and his sire line eight of the top 20 synthetic sires of sires of all time. Mr. Prospector continues to have a strong presence in synthetic racing, with the prominence of sons such as Smart Strike and Not For Love, as well as leading synthetic sires from the male line that includes Candy Ride, Distorted Humor, Lemon Drop Kid, Speightstown, Trajectory, and Broken Vow. The top three sires by synthetic average earnings per start also come from the Mr. Prospector line: Street Cry, Kingmambo, and Empire Maker, respectively. That s not that surprising, because they re just so talented in general, Farish said about the Mr. Prospector line. He s always gotten horses that not only sprinted, but were good milers and beyond. It s just such a solid sire line. The interesting thing about that is it does tend to have more of a dirt bent, whereas the Northern Dancer line would be more turf-oriented. One of the biggest factors shaping the list of leading synthetic sires is the location of the racetracks that have installed artificial surfaces. Because the cost to install and maintain an allweather surface runs into the millions, its expansion has largely been limited to tracks that are either on major circuits or otherwise have significant financial backing. Nowhere is this more apparent than at Woodbine. The Ontario racetrack operates by far the longest meet of any track hosting synthetic racing, with a meet of eight months that runs from early spring to December. While the track s signature races are run on turf, Woodbine still provides almost year-round opportunities to race on the main Polytrack surface. The overall figures of racing on synthetic surfaces clearly show the abundance of such racing in Ontario, as perennial province-leader Bold Executive sits comfortably in first as the top North American sire by starts on synthetic surfaces, wins and progeny earnings. The 3,104 synthetic starts by Bold Executive s progeny give the deceased son of Bold Ruckus nearly double the amount of the second-most prolific sire, former Ontario resident Trajectory, whose foals have raced 1,858 times on artificial surfaces. Bold Executive s synthetic earnings of more than $17 million also puts him $6 million ahead of second-place Street Cry. Those figures are due in large part to Ontario s lucrative, but currently jeopardized, province-bred program that has been fueled by supplements from casino gaming. He s an Ontario sire, so there is a lot of racing which is limited to Ontario sires, and up until four or five years ago, if you ran an Ontario-sired race, threequarters of the field might have been Bold Executives, Casse said. The numbers are skewed for that reason, but he was a good sire. Woodbine s long racing schedule also has had an impact on Smart Strike s figures as a synthetic sire. Smart Strike, bred in Ontario by Sam-Son Farms, was frequently sent mares by Sam-Son, with the resultant progeny retained to race at Woodbine. Another point tying together many synthetic tracks is that most of them already had well-established turf racing programs prior to installing their new surface. Five of synthetic surface tracks have turf courses that feature Grade 1 turf races and host some of the world s most prestigious turf cards. Because of the strong draw of turf racing at those tracks, connections may be more inclined to try horses bred for grass on the synthetic main track. It s really as much running style as anything, Farish said. Because synthetic is more sit and wait and make your run at the end like turf, it s not really as speed-favoring. They favor the running styles of turf horses more. In that case, the tie between turf and synthetic success can sometimes prove absolutely true, as it has with Kitten s Joy, who led Kentucky sires by winners on both surfaces in The 12-year-old El Prado horse, a champion on turf, stands at Ramsey Farm in Nicholasville, Ky. Usually a horse that runs good on the turf also runs pretty well on the synthetic surface, said Ken Ramsey, who bred and raced Kitten s Joy. There s a direct correlation between it. If you check [Kitten s Joy s] pedigree, Sadler s Wells did the majority of his running over in Europe, and over there, it s practically all grass, and the Roberto line is grass, and the mare on the bottom side is a Lear Fan mare. He s got grass in his pedigree, so we felt like he would do good on synthetic surfaces. Development of synthetic racing Artificial racing surfaces at North American racetracks trace to 1966, when Tropical Park in Dade County, Fla., introduced a rubberized surface called Tartan Turf, developed by Hall of Fame trainer John Nerud and Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. (3M), whose chairman, William L. McKnight, owned Tartan Farm. One race per card was held on the Tartan Turf, but the vast majority of horsemen and jockeys refused to compete on the hard surface, even after tweaks were made to soften the ground. The next track to try a synthetic surface was Remington Park in Oklahoma City, which installed oilbased Equitrack in However, maintenance costs and difficulties recruiting horsemen to run at the track forced the track to go back to a dirt track in It was 14 years before synthetic racing surfaces once again emerged from the training tracks to a parimutuel facility, when Turfway Park opened its 2005 fall meet with a Polytrack surface. Within the next two years, all-weather tracks began to appear across the country, including every major track in California as mandated by the California Horse Racing Board. That policy has since been relaxed. Today, eight parimutuel racetracks in North America feature a main track comprised of a synthetic surface, in addition to the Ocala Training Center, which hosts lucrative non-parimutuel stakes races for the alumni of Ocala Breeders Sales Co. auctions. Those nine venues use one of four of all-weather surfaces Polytrack, Cushion Track, Tapeta Footings, or Safetrack consisting of different blends of silica sand, rubber, synthetic and elastic fibers, and wax coatings.
