5 3 WELCOME FROM RICHARD LANCASTER THE team at Shadwell Estate Company began this year with a great sense of anticipation in preparation for the eagerly awaited first foals by our Champion Sprinter MUHAARAR and I am delighted to say they have not disappointed. I have been privileged to see numerous foals by the sire many of whom are bred in the purple and have been particularly taken with the way MUHAARAR has stamped his stock. It is very easy to make comparisons between MUHAARAR and his grandsire GREEN DESERT, who also stamped his offspring with good looks, but the similarities are uncanny. The foals I have seen are well balanced individuals, with loose, athletic walks, which bodes well for breeders selling foals this winter. MUHAARAR was an exceptional racehorse with a pedigree and looks to match. He was therefore oversubscribed again in 2017 and on the back of his outstanding first foals, his book is beginning to swell again for the 2018 breeding season, for which his fee will remain unchanged at 30,000. On behalf of Shadwell, I would like to thank HH Sheikh Hamdan for his unwavering support of the Nunnery-based stallions and congratulate him on another prosperous year on the racecourse, headed by the enigmatic, but brilliantly fast BATTAASH, who put up a fabulous performance to win the Prix de l Abbaye at Chantilly. TASLEET also confirmed himself one of the year s leading sprinters and there is plenty to look forward to in 2018 with the likes of Group 3-winning two-year-old ELARQAM. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Tom Pennington, who has joined to take the role of Nominations and Marketing Manager. Tom replaces Rachael Gowland, who left earlier in the year for the European Breeders Fund, for whom I am sure she will do a tremendous job. Finally, a huge thank you to the breeders, whose unparalleled support is greatly appreciated. We wish you every success for the year ahead. It has also been a landmark year for MUKHADRAM, with his first yearlings coming under the hammer, including a half-sister to Group 2 Railway Stakes winner and dual Group 1-placed performer BECKFORD, who sold for 200,000 at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale. His yearlings have averaged more than five times his fee, which is particularly pleasing. We look forward to his first two-year-olds making their racecourse debuts in NAYEF continues to be a model of consistency, providing another high-class runner in the form of Group 1 winner ICE BREEZE as well as Royal Ascot scorer SNOANO. 6 SHADWELL ESTATE ACQUIRED on behalf of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum in 1984, Shadwell Estate in Norfolk is the British headquarters for what is widely recognised as one of the world s most prestigious breeding operations. 4 SHADWELL STUD The Nunnery Stud in Norfolk is the focal point of Shadwell s British and European racing and breeding arms. It is from here that the operation s stallions in Australasia, Britain, France, Italy, South Africa and South America are managed. Several equine greats have graced the Nunnery Stud since it was built in 1987, including NASHWAN, GREEN DESERT and his grandson MUHAARAR, whose first foals have been a hot topic among breeders across Europe this year. Shadwell also invests heavily in British and European Thoroughbred racing and breeding. In 2017, Shadwell were the flagship sponsor on major racedays at Newmarket, Deauville and Rome as well as sponsoring individual races across Europe throughout the year and the Salisbury Apprentice Series. SHADWELL RACING The famous blue and white silks of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum have been a familiar sight on racecourses around the globe now for the best part of 30 years. Shadwell has a large presence in Europe, with more than 400 horses spread among 18 trainers and also has horses in training in Australia, South Africa and the US. Sheikh Hamdan has been crowned champion owner in Britain seven times, most recently in 2014 following his star filly TAGHROODA S victories in the Oaks and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Sheikh Hamdan has received several major accolades in recent years, including the Cartier Award of Merit and the TBA Silver Salver. SHADWELL ARABIANS Shadwell Arabian Stallions have won numerous international Group 1 races and their progeny have also made their mark across the world. We have more than 60 horses in training across Europe and the UAE and headliners in 2017 have included Group 1 PA winners AF MATHMOON, HANDASSA and MURAAQIB. Shadwell Stud also supports Arabian racing globally under the banner of Dubai International Arabian Races in France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, South America, Sweden, UAE and the US. This initiative sponsors and organises Europe s premier Arabian Race Day, staged in Great Britain, with free entry for everyone. SHADWELL ABERDEEN ANGUS Shadwell Estate Company Limited have run a leading herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle since 1998 and in the intervening years have won countless titles at agricultural and county shows in Britain. In 2012, Shadwell expanded its cattle portfolio with the addition of a herd of Herefordshires, who have also been developed and nurtured into show winners. Shadwell had great success in the show ring this year, with the Shadwell Red Boaz R826 judged Breed Champion at the South Suffolk and Suffolk Shows, while the Shadwell Ebenezer N672 was crowned Best Stock Bull in the East of England Aberdeen Angus Club Herd Competition for the second year running. The Herefords also had a successful year, with the Shadwell Bossy N877 judged Native Interbreed Champion at the South Suffolk Show, Overall Interbreed Champion at Hadleigh Show and Junior Male Champion at the prestigious Three Counties Show. The Shadwell Boss N872 scooped top honours at the Suffolk Show when crowned Breed Champion.

Today, the farm encompasses close to 3,400 acres and serves as the base for H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum s North American racing and breeding operation. MUHAARAR delivered that all-important two-year-old form with victory in the Gimcrack Stakes and placed efforts in the Middle Park and July Stakes. After winning the often informative Greenham Stakes on his threeyear-old debut he would surely have finished much closer in the Poule d Essai des Poulains but for a poor draw, and it was a subsequent drop in trip that revealed him to be a true champion. MUHAARAR embarked on a remarkable run of four consecutive successes at the highest level, defeating Limato by a wide margin in the Commonwealth Cup before taking the July Cup, Prix Maurice de Gheest and British Champions Sprint Stakes in a feat of consistency so rarely seen in the sprinting division nowadays. He is by Oasis Dream, whose son Showcasing has surpassed all expectations to become one of Europe s most coveted young sires, and is out of Tahrir, a Listed-placed daughter of Linamix who has produced three other stakes horses. So it really is no surprise that MUHAARAR has covered 131 black-type performers in his first two books, with more high-class mares set to visit him in his third year at Nunnery Stud in
