6 Welcome from Richard Lancaster Much has changed at Shadwell since I sat down to write this piece last year. In the last 48 hours a new stallion has arrived and I have returned from Champions Day where I was able to witness yet another wonderful performance from a son of NAYEF. The arrival of MUKHADRAM has really put a spring in everyone s step at Shadwell. A Gr.1 winning son of SHAMARDAL arriving at a time when his sire seems able to do no wrong has to be good news. Add to that the surge in winners from LOPE DE VEGA, a son of SHAMARDAL in his first season at stud and you start to get the picture. We have had a very positive response from breeders interested in using MUKHADRAM. We have set his fee at 7,000 1st Jan SLF which we believe is very competitive in this fierce market. NAYEF has once again enjoyed a successful season with 7 individual stakes winners following FORGOTTEN RULES win in the Gr.2 QIPCO British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot s Champions Meeting. It is a sad reflection on our breeding industry that despite these successes and maintaining a yearling sales average of over 52,000gns (all crops) that we have been forced to reduce NAYEF S fee to 5,000 1st Jan SLF for The market cries out for precocious speed while our most prestigious races remain those over distances between 1mile and 1 1/2 miles. There are many hot stallions out there but most of them will never produce anything to compete in those races most owners aspire to win! MAWATHEEQ and SAKHEE remain on our roster at Shadwell and while the fees are advertised as PRIVATE I encourage those breeders interested to contact the office for further details. The pricing of all our stallions has been done with the sole intention of attracting both commercial and owner breeders. Please make that call! The outlying stallions continue to make an impact whether standing here in the UK, France or Italy. HAAFHD has yet again shown his ability to sire tough and resilient individuals around the world and has been rewarded with his first Gr.1 winner in JUNOOB; MUHTATHIR maintains his position amongst the leading sires in France and MUJAHID remains at the forefront of Italian based stallions. They are all a credit to the studs that stand them on our behalf. It has been a wonderful season for Sheikh Hamdan in whose colours the Shadwell horses run. TAGHROODA, who has recently returned to the Stud, was the first Classic winner in 4 years when she won the Oaks at Epsom. This was followed by MUKHADRAM S outstanding performance in the Coral-Eclipse (Gr.1) in July. A tally of 12 Group races in 2014 shows the return of Shadwell to the top of the tree and a wonderful effort from all involved, especially the racing team led by Angus Gold. Our sponsorship programme around the world is well advanced for 2015 as I write this piece. Yet again, Shadwell will be supporting full days of top racing at Newmarket s Rowley Mile and in Deauville. Finally I would like to express my thanks to all those breeders who have supported our stallions in 2014; we hope you will be back again in I would also like to extend thanks to all our trainers and their staff who do so much to make the stallions and mares that we rely on for the studs. 13 Shadwell Estate Company Limited PURCHASED in 1984, Shadwell Estate in Norfolk (originally a 6,000-acre country estate) is now the UK base for one of the most well regarded bloodstock operations in the world. Shadwell Stud The Nunnery Stud, Norfolk acts as a base for Shadwell s British and European racing and breeding activities. It is from here that our 14 stallions in the UK, France, Italy, South Africa, Australasia and South America are managed. Since its construction in 1987, the Nunnery Stud has been home to some of the world s greatest racehorses and most influential stallions. Today, it is home to MAWATHEEQ, MUKHADRAM, NAYEF and SAKHEE each Group winners and each with their unique selling points. The most famous current resident of the Nunnery Stud however, is the now pensioned GREEN DESERT; a son of DANZIG born in 1983, he is widely recognised as one of the most influential sires of modern times, producing no less than 19 individual Gr.1 winners as well as world class sires such as OASIS DREAM, CAPE CROSS and INVINCIBLE SPIRIT. Further afield, our outlying stallions represent Shadwell across Europe in markets that suit their respective appeals: MUHTATHIR based at Haras du Mezeray and NAAQOOS at Haras du Grand Chesnaie, France and leading Italian sire MUJAHID, managed by Soc. Agricola di Besnate, Italy. In addition, we invest in British and European Thoroughbred racing and breeding through race sponsorship. In 2014 we were the major sponsor at Shadwell Day (Rowley Mile, Newmarket) and Shadwell Prix de la Nonette Day (Deauville, France) as well as of individual races across Europe throughout the year. Shadwell Racing For nearly 30 years, horses have run in major races across Europe in the colours of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Shadwell supports 17 trainers in the UK and Europe with over 400 horses in training. In addition we have horses in training in Australia and South Africa which we manage from our UK base. We further support bloodstock industries across the world through buying bloodstock in the UK, Ireland, the USA, Australia and South Africa. Shadwell Arabians Shadwell Arabian Stallions, like their Thoroughbred counterparts, have won numerous international Gr.1 races. Their progeny have been successful across the globe, winning in the USA, Sweden and Russia as well as the UK, United Arab Emirates and Qatar. We stand 5 Arabian stallions in the UK and France and a further 3 in the USA. In addition, over 50 horses in training race across Europe and in the UAE in the same famous blue and white colours as their Thoroughbred relatives. The Shadwell Arabian headliner of 2014 was AL HIBAAB, winner of the Shadwell Stud Dubai International Stakes (Gr.1 PA) and International IFAHR Trophy (Gr.2 PA). Shadwell Stud is the major sponsor behind Europe s premier Arabian race day at Newbury each year. Under the new Dubai International Arabian Races initiative, Shadwell aims to develop and promote Arabian racing across the globe. Euro fee on application Standing at Nunnery Stud LIMITED BOOK AS well as being a Group winner and the product of a very strong pedigree, HEIGHT OF FASHION S grandson MAWATHEEQ comes with the added bonus of being one of the last sons of the legendary sire of sires DANZIG to retire to stud. Siring such legends as DANEHILL and GREEN DESERT, DANZIG S legacy is still felt with his final batches of young sire sons including WAR FRONT, EXCHANGE RATE and HARD SPUN - all of whom have sired Gr.1 winners. With the weight of DANZIG in his sire line, MAWATHEEQ S pedigree is balanced perfectly by the class and quality of both his dam and granddam. SARAYIR is the dam of 7 winners including 1,000gns heroine GHAANATI and high-class Group performer RUMOUSH to complement MAWATHEEQ S own achievements at Group level. His grand-dam HEIGHT OF FASHION, needs little introduction as the producer of the likes of NAYEF, NASHWAN and UNFUWAIN. MAWATHEEQ, of course, does not owe his position on the Shadwell roster solely to his pedigree being a Gr.3 winner and actually unlucky not to be a Champion Stakes (Gr.1) winner, having been hampered by TWICE OVER when finishing second, beaten only half a length, to that horse in As MAWATHEEQ did not run as a 2 year old himself (due to injury), it would be unfair to assume that he would produce 2 year old winners; however, connections were rewarded this year as his first crop produced his first 2 year old winner in Italy when FRANKOLIN beat his 8 rivals by a gratifying 11 lengths. MAWATHEEQ S runners in the UK have also been encouraging and although some have understandably not run as 2 year olds, reports from trainers indicate that there may be some very promising prospective 3 year olds in the offing....one of the best yearlings I have ever seen. He made steady progress to the top level and was unlucky not to win the Champion Stakes. He should appeal to breeders being a strong sort by Danzig from an illustrious female line. 18 Race Record Pedigree Notes ONE of the most conspicuously successful crosses over the past few seasons has been SADLER S WELLS stallions over DANEHILL mares. On this basis, MAWATHEEQ, a son of DANEHILL S sire DANZIG, has obvious appeal for SADLER S WELLS - line mares; one of MAWATHEEQ S earliest and most promising 2 year olds this year, SAUMUR, is out of a MONTJEU mare. 48 A momentous year for Shadwell Racing across Europe RACING Shadwell Racing Some called it a renaissance, some a resurgence, some commented the impressive start to Shadwell s 2014 racing season was a little overdue but one thing was true, TAGHROODA S win in the Epsom Oaks sparked a renewed interest for the racing public and media alike in the famous blue and white colours of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the horses that carry them to victory. Shadwell horses have always competed at the top level, resulting in Sheikh Hamdan s name never leaving the top 5 of the British Champion owners table during the last 30 years - and topping it on 4 occasions. Angus Gold, Shadwell s Racing Manager works in conjunction with 17 trainers in various different countries to fulfil the ambitions of Shadwell s racing aims. In addition to office and sales based teams of support staff, Shadwell retains the services of 2 world class jockeys: Paul Hanagan and Dane O Neill. Paul has twice been Champion Jockey in the UK (2010 and 2011) and is now a Classic winning one, thanks to TAGHROODA. Dane is a Gr.1 winning jockey having ridden BOLD EDGE to victory in the Prix Maurice De Gheest and has recently added wins in the Sweet Solera Stakes (Gr.3) and the Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.2) in Dubai to his tally. 54 Artist Profile 2014 heralded a new Classic winner from the Shadwell ranks in the form of TAGHROODA. She has been an inspiration to the whole team and it is this filly that Glynis Mills (Hon. SEA) has chosen to develop her 2015 stallion brochure commission around. Luck has played a major part in fine artist and printmaker, Glynis Mills s life. After walking into the wrong room at York College of Art, her career as an illustrator started (she had gone to learn window dressing as her career advisor had creatively suggested, due to her lack of height). Five years later, she emerged with a degree in Design and Illustration. A successful career as an illustrator/designer then followed, working both in London, and in Yorkshire where she is based. Ten years ago, after a chance find of a 19th century Albion Press, she decided to concentrate purely on the fine art side of her career, specifically the printmaking. Her inspiration comes from the animals and countryside around her together with frequent visits to Spain and the gypsy horse fairs in England and Ireland. Racing is a new, exciting direction for her work. Horses and art are an everyday part of Glynis s life. When she is not painting, printmaking or sketching, she is riding her horses or judging dressage (Glynis has been a listed British Dressage judge for many years). As an Honorary Member of the Society of Equestrian Artists she exhibits and sells with them annually at the Mall London and Newmarket. She also shows and sells her work regularly with the Society of Women Artists and other major Societies. Two galleries in North Yorkshire showcase her work: Zillah Bell at Thirsk and Gallery 42 in Tadcaster. Recent awards include the Curwen Press Award for the best print work at the Mall Galleries. In 2009 her work received the highest accolade from the Laing Gallery in Newcastle for the best work in the International Print Biennale. In 2013 she was awarded the Cuneo Medal (the late Sir Terence Cuneo was the SEA s first President); this award is judged by Full Members of the SEA and is given to the artist whose work is considered to be the best that year.
