Dale s season included two overnight stakes wins the Pink Ribbon with Dee s Rose and the forward Pass with Conacher but was topped by Public Speaker s victory in the Sea o Erin Stakes. Career: Dale is the son of longtime Michigan-based conditioner Gerald Bennett. He grew up around horses and spent much of his youth on a farm near Campbellville, Ontario, Canada where horses were layed up. After graduating high school, Dale went to work for his dad on the track. He was a hotwalker for a couple of years and then groomed horses for another eight. He took out his trainer s license in 1998 and won his first race on July 1, 1998 with Spirit of Austin at Detroit Race Course. He sent out four stakes winners Giant Oak in the Arlington Classic, Apple Martini in the Lincoln Heritage, Fort Prado in the Black Tie Affair (for the fourth time in five years) and Free Fighter in the Stars and Stripes. Career: Chris was introduced to racing when his father, David, bought a claiming horse while Chris was in grade school. He went to school for Equine Management in Champaign. Worked for Bill Mott at Arlington, Canterbury and Churchill. Took out his trainer s license in 1989 and saddled his first winner, La Fab, on May 2, 1991 at Sportsman s Park. Chris finished second in the Arlington standings in 2000 in races won with 30 but lead all Arlington-based trainers in earnings with $973,653. Trained three Illinois Champions in 2004 Mystery Giver (Horse of the Year), Fort Prado (3-year-old male) and Lighthouse Lil (turf female). His stable took home three Championships in 2005 Fort Prado (champion male, champion turf male) and Creative Force (champion 2-year-old male) and three more in Fort Prado (champion male, champion turf male, and Horse of the Year). He sent out Dixie Band to win the Arlington-Washington Futurity and eventual Eclipse Award champion She Be Wild to capture the Arlington-Washington Lassie. Career: Wayne won 1,792 races as a jockey before chronic knee problems forced him to hang up his tack. Was the nation s secondleading rider in Served as an assistant under Hall-of-Fame conditioner Jack Van Berg for a time and began training on his own in 1983, recording his first victory that same year with Dreamin Of You at Arlington. Wayne has earned training crowns at Sportsman s Park in 1988 and 1989 and at Hawthorne in 1987, 1989 and Wayne lead all trainers with 37 victories to claim his first-ever Arlington training crown in Earned his second title in 2002, setting a single season record of 64 victories in the process. Career: He worked for 30 years as a mechanic before becoming a horse trainer in the late 1980s. Coincidentally, his career as a mechanic ended because a horse rolled over on him and broke his hip. He came to Illinois in 1992 and spent a few years at Fairmount Park before coming to Chicago where he has been training ever since. He won his first training title at Hawthorne in the spring of 2007 and repeated there in the spring of His most successful day in racing came in the spring of 2008 when he took three horses to Prairie Meadows and won all three races, including two stakes, with Sole of the City and Magnus One. He also won the Illinois Debutante in 1999 with Lil Bobbie Too and the Jim Edgar Futurity the following year, with Lil Mephistopheles, both for owner W. Dean West. James DiVito Birthdate: February 12, 1950 Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois $914, AP $419,863 Career AP wins: 260 (28th) Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: Jim won with 22 of 92 starters during the 2009 Arlington meet to score at an impressive 23.91% clip. He was named Trainer of the Month in June. Career: Son of longtime horseman Pete DiVito, Jim walked horses, mucked stalls, groomed and galloped horses for his father. He took out his jockey s license in 1968 and won a race at the state fair. When he realized he wouldn t be able to maintain his riding weight however, he turned to training. Served as his father s assistant for five years. Claimed a horse and went out on his own in Top Arlington stakes wins include the Colfax Maid twice Comforts of Home (1986) and Exclusive Nell (1989) and the 1997 Springfield Stakes with Man The Shipp. Trains multiple stakes winning sprinter Coach Jimi Lee, who set a track record of 1:07.27 for six furlongs at Hawthorne. 22

Bow Tie Pasta went on to be named Illinois Champion 3-Year-Old Filly. Career: The son of a harness horseman, Dorris grew up in Herrin, Illinois. His father raised pacers and raced them on the downstate fair circuit, but when the time came to go out on his own, Tom turned to Thoroughbreds. He purchased his first Thoroughbred when he was 19 and he raced at the downstate fairs and at Ellis Park in Henderson, Kentucky. He came to Chicago for the first time in the late 1970s. He and his wife, Judy, have a farm in West Frankfort, Illinois, and his son, Chris, also trains on the Illinois-Kentucky circuit. Most of his success has come in claiming races and with Illinoisbred horses. He captured his first training title at Hawthorne Race Course in He is a consistent top 20 performer on the Chicago circuit. He won the 2001 Isaac Murphy Handicap with Rain Boots. His son Chris also trains horses on the Chicago circuit. Anthony Granitz Birthdate: October 25, 1963 Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois $556, AP $332,751 Career AP wins: 222 (40th) Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: Tony had another good year in 2009 to win 13 races from 111 starters. Career: First became involved in racing as an owner and started training at the age of 20 when his brother Chris left the racing business. Won the 1991 Hawthorne Budweiser Breeders Cup with Lord Joe. Won eight races over a five-day span at Sportsman s in 1993 and finished third in the trainer standings that year with 26 wins. His Coni Bug, who won the Governor s and Silent Intent at Arlington in 1993, was named Illinois Champion Two-Year-Old Filly of 1992 and Champion Three-Year-Old Filly of Captured two stakes on Illinois Red Letter Day 1993, the Violet with Coni Bug and the Governor s Lady with Darley Dancer. Darley Dancer won the Governor s Lady three consecutive years ( ), and scored in the Feather Fan at Arlington and the My Fair Lady at Fairmount in Trainer of Michael s Star, who won the 1995 Count Fleet at Aqueduct. Tony moved into the top 10 in the trainer standings during the 2003 meet, finished tied for 10th with 17 victories topped by Wiggins scores in the Springfield Stakes vs. Illinois-breds and the Round Table Stakes in open company. Greg Geier Birthdate: September 19, 1956 Birthplace: Methuen, Massachusetts $398, AP $124,526 Career AP wins: 54 Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: Greg bounced back from an off year in 2008 to win six races from 48 starts at Arlington, topped by Coragil Cat s victory in the Timeless Native Stakes on opening day. Career: Greg comes from a racing family. His father, George, trained in Louisiana, Michigan and Chicago. He began working for his father as a child, walking horses as early as age 8. He went out on his own in the early 1980s and scored his first winner with Admiral s Command. He was assistant to trainer Gene Cilio for nearly 10 years and took over upon Cilio s death in Nov He won his first stakes race with Out of My Way in the Taylor s Special Handicap at the Fair Grounds in Feb. 2004, and captured his first graded stakes with Allspice in the Grade III Sixty Sails Handicap at Hawthorne that April. In 2004, Geier s first full year on his own, he had 14 winners at Arlington. Won the Grade III Hanshin Cup with Coragil Cat in David Hinsley Birthdate: August 25, 1948 Birthplace: Brandford, Ontario $218, AP $136,392 Career AP wins: 196 (44th) Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: David won six races from 74 starts at Arlington Park in 2009 with two of those victories coming in overnight stakes when Rumor Has It captured the Polar Expedition Stakes and the Rossi Gold Stakes. Career: Although his father is a Chicago native, David was born in Canada and moved to Australia when he was eight years old. He began to ride in Australian races at the age of 16, but he got hurt shortly after starting and then grew too big to ride. He returned to the United States a short time later and for a time dabbled in rodeo riding. He spends the winter months racing at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida but otherwise makes the Chicago tracks his base of operations. Top horses trained by Hinsley include With Every Wish, a $35,000 claim who went on to finish in the money in a pair of turf stakes; Northern Relation, an $8,500 purchase that went on to earn more than $200,000; and stakes placed Mentagra. 23

Career: A jockey in his youth, Hobby turned to training in Trained at Oaklawn Park in the mid 1980s before moving his operation to Remington Park in Oklahoma when that track opened. Returned to Oaklawn Park several years later and now races on a circuit that includes Arkansas in the Spring and Chicago in the Summer and Fall. Trained multiple stakes winner Belle of Cozzene who won the Modesty Handicap and Arlington Matron in Won the 2003 Grade III Singapore Plate with Sue s Good News. Other top horses trained by Hobby include Brush With Pride and the popular sprinter Chindi. Steve s stable scored at a high percentage during 2006, winning 13 of 71 starters for a win ratio of nearly 19 percent. His biggest victory of the season came with Sampson s Son in the Cigar Stakes. Christine Janks Birthdate: February 4, 1950 Birthplace: Evergreen Park, Illinois $1,297, AP $758,872 Career AP wins: 521 (8th) Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: Christine had a solid season at Arlington in 2009 with 22 wins from 147 starts topped by Nicks s victory in the Isaac Murphy Handicap. Career: Attended the races with her father as a child and started working as an exercise rider at Arlington in the late 1960s. Began galloping horses for Pete Divito in Elected the first female President of the Chicago Division of the Horsemen s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) and served as President of the Illinois Thoroughbred Horsemen s Association (ITHA) from Saddled her first career winner, Varbo, at Arlington in Won the 1976 Arlington Matron with Cycylya Zee, who also equaled a world record for three-year-old fillies that year. Frank Kirby Birthdate: April 7, 1937 Birthplace: New Mexico $1,840, AP $584,625 Career AP wins: 421 (13th) Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: Frank enjoyed another successful season in 2009 with 23 victories which placed him eighth in the trainer standings. His 111 victories for the year was the most for Kirby in a single year since Career: The son of a rancher, Kirby grew up around horses and cattle. He got his first taste of horse racing at age 15 when he went to the old Phoenix Fair Grounds. He fell in love with the sport and traded two brown Swiss cows for two racehorses. During his early years, Kirby trained at Phoenix, Aksarben, Centennial and La Mesa, all of which no longer exist. He came to Chicago for the first time in 1974 and decided to make his home here in Since 1980, Kirby and his wife, Sharon, have owned and operated Hondo Ranch in Maple Park, Ill., and they took their former private stable public in the late 1990s. He bought his first horse at age 13 with money earned walking hots for his dad and delivering newspapers; the horse won the first time he raced. After working as his dad's assistant, Maker went out on his own in In 1993 Maker began a 10-year stint with trainer D. Wayne Lukas, working at Churchill Downs under Dallas Stewart, then an assistant to Lukas. When Stewart went out on his own in 1997, Maker took over as head of Lukas s Louisville operation. Maker left the Lukas stable in 2003 to again open his own stable. His first big horse was Freefourinternet, who won the Hawthorne Gold Cup in 2004 and that year became his first Breeders' Cup starter, finishing off the board in the Breeders' Cup Classic. From Dec through April 2009, Maker earned five consecutive leading trainer titles at Turfway Park. He earned his first Keeneland title in the fall of 2008 and amassed 31 wins in the 2009 Churchill Downs fall meet, not only winning his first title there but also crushing the previous record of 20. Career: Tom is the son of the late trainer Willard Proctor, who trained at Arlington during the 1960s and 1970s before relocating to California. Tom took out his trainer s license in 1978 and scored with his first ever starter, a sprinter named I m Smoking who went on to be named California s sprinter of the year in Trained the speedy Linear, who held track records at both Arlington and Sportsman s parks. Tom is probably best known for his work with One Dreamer, who won the 1994 Breeders Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs. One Dreamer also won the Arlington-Budweiser Breeders Cup in back to back seasons (1993 and 1994). Other Arlington stakes winners trained by Proctor include Split Run and Carload. Mike Reavis Birthdate: October 12, 1946 Birthplace: Fairbury, Illinois $532, AP $140,066 Career AP wins: 348 (18th) Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: Mike had a bit of a quiet year at Arlington in 2009 but still managed to win eight races from 79 starts during the meet. Career: Began working for his uncle, Willis Reavis, a prominent California trainer, when Mike was a teenager. Served in Vietnam and later worked for the telephone company. Was brought back into racing by Eddie Reynolds and he took out his training license in Earned his first stakes victory in the 1982 Land of Lincoln Stakes at Sportsman s Park with Too Many Twos. His biggest win came when Shining Light captured the then-grade II Arlington- Washington Lassie in Also trained multiple stake winning Illinois-bred High Habitation who scored in the 1993 Robert F. Carey Memorial Handicap (Grade III) at Hawthorne Race Course and also took two editions of the Illinois Coronet Handicap there. Has won three Sportsman s Park training titles (1990, 2001 and 2002) and also earned crowns at Hawthorne in 2000, Spring 2001, Fall 2002 and both meets in Saddled five winners on one card at Hawthorne Nov. 2, 2002 and added a sixth on the day that evening at Hoosier Park. Hugh Robertson Birthdate: February 27, 1951 Birthplace: Columbus, Nebraska $1,590, AP $813,918 Career AP wins: 263 (26th) Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: Hugh had a very successful season at Arlington Park in 2009 winning 32 races to finish fourth in the standings. His biggest win of the season came with Wildeydsouthernboy in the Zen Stakes. He was named Trainer of the Month in May and his stable earned Barn of the Month honors in June. Career: Took out his trainers license in 1970 and earned his first victory with Encorcel at Ak-Sar-Ben that same year. Best known as the trainer of three-time champion Illinois-bred Polar Expedition who was named Horse of the Year in 1993, 1994 and Polar Expedition, who retired as the state s second all-time leading money earner with more than $1.4 million in his bankroll, had two of his biggest victories at Arlington, winning the Grade II Arlington- Washington Futurity in 1993 and the Washington Park Handicap (GII) in He also won the Jim Beam Stakes (GII) at Turfway Park, the Breeders Futurity (GII) at Keeneland and the National Jockey Club Handicap (GIII) at Sportsman s Park. Finished second in the trainers standings at Hawthorne Race Course in Hugh won 19 of 116 races at Arlington in 2000 to finish 13th in the standings and was named trainer of the month in July. Saddled four winners on one card at Hawthorne on Nov. 16, Won the 2004 training title at Canterbury Park in Minnesota. Son Maclean (Mac) also trains. Mike Stidham Birthdate: December 18, 1957 Birthplace: Neptune, New Jersey $2,327, AP $668,789 Career AP wins: 227 (38th) Career AP stakes wins: Arlington Meet: Mike continued to bat at a high percentage with 23 victories from 130 starts for a healthy win percentage. His season was topped with a score in the Grade III Washington Park Handicap with Gran Estreno. Career: His father, George, was a jockey-turned-trainer on the south Florida circuit. Began training in 1978 when his father sent him to Tampa Bay Downs with the horses that didn t fit at the Miami tracks. He went to California in the early 1980s to continue his career and though connections established by his father and former rider Bill Hartack. He trained horses for Elmendorf Farm and Max Gluck. He returned to Florida two years later to take a job as private trainer for Meadowbrook Farm. He went back to California a short time later, began training horses for Harold Goodman and eventually became his private trainer. Trained graded stakes winners Manzotti and Two Altazano for Goodman. Stidham now trains for Goodman s son Greg, as well as for Stonerside Stable, Cobra Farm and Mike Rutherford. Mike is one of the highest percentage trainers on the Louisiana-Texas circuit. Mike had a very successful Arlington meet in 2004, winning 25 races from 111 starters to score at more than a 22 percent clip. He won two six-figure stakes at the meet, capturing the $150,000 Sea O Erin Breeders Cup Mile with Herculated and the Grade III $100,000 Arlington-Washington Lassie with Culinary. 25
