In the fall of 1983, everyone in the Thoroughbred business had heard of Russell Jones. Along with his late brother, Richard, he traveled to Keeneland with a formidable sales prospect. When the hammer finally fell, the stakeswinning Nashua mare Producer, in foal to Northern Dancer, set a record price of $5,250,000 for a broodmare. Two young guys from Chester County go to legendary Keeneland and blow the roof off, recalled Jones with a broad grin. It was some pretty heady stuff. Northern Dancer was a huge help to us. He brought mares from all over the world to board at Walnut Green waiting to be bred to him. Walnut Green backs up to Lael Farm, where Barbaro s owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, live, outside the quiet village 1264

2 of Unionville, Pa. The rolling countryside is ringed by hardwood forests and grand, historic horse farms. It s peaceful around here. Mares with their spindly-legged foals are beginning to dot the landscape. Named after Jones grandfather s farm in neighboring Delaware County, Walnut Green was purchased by Jones mother, Carol Pyle, in Today, it comprises 200 acres, with another 100 leased acres. It houses about 80 horses, mainly mares and their offspring. There has always been a great heritage in this region, Jones said. And it was long before the racetracks opened up. George Widener, Sam Riddle, and Fitz Dixon raised great horses and were bigtime players on the national scene. In the 1980s, this area produced two world-class sires in Danzig and Storm Cat. Jones first consigned a few horses at the Saratoga and Timonium auctions, then in the late 1970s he and his brother launched Walnut Green Bloodstock Agency. They boarded, bred, raised, sold, and traded Thoroughbreds, and built Walnut Green into one of the leading outfits in the Mid- Atlantic region. Among the earliest clients were Allaire du Pont s Bohemia Stable and Jane du Pont Lunger s Christiana Stables. A natural horseman, Jones, along with his staff, molds young animals into racehorses. Developing young racehorses takes accumulated experience and patient skill, and Walnut Green has done it exceedingly well for nearly three decades. One of its best was Flower Alley, purchased by Eugene Melnyk at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale for $165,000. Flower Alley won the Travers (gr. I) and ran second in the Breeders Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I) on the way to earning $2.5 million on the racetrack. Others include At Talaq, a three-time group I winner internationally; Golden Pheasant, who captured the Japan Cup (Jpn-I) and the Arlington Million (gr. IT); and In the Gold, a grade I winner of $745,617. In November 2005, Walnut Green sold the graded stakes-winning broodmare prospect Personal Legend at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November mixed sale for $950,000. An Industry Leader There is hardly a leadership role within the Thoroughbred industry that Jones has not filled. A former Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association president and member of the state s Horse Racing Commission, Russell was chairman of the North American Graded Committee, past president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, and has been a member of The Jockey Club since He is also the residing steward at the four leading hunt meets in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Jones did it all the while Jones at last summer s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale maintaining a thriving consignment business. In the fall of 2005, the Jones brothers pulled off their biggest horse trade. In a deal that caught many by surprise, they sold the business to a group led by Mark Reid, a former top trainer in the Jones tacked up and ready to ride anne m. eberhardt Mid Atlantic region and a leading private bloodstock agent. Reid picked out grade I winners Medaglia d Oro and You early in their careers, negotiated stallion deals for Horse of the Year St. Liam and grade I winner Peace Rules, and touted John Servis to train champion and Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness (gr. I) winner Smarty Jones for Roy and Pat Chapman. Jones stayed on as an employee advising Reid and his son, Mark Jr., on the consignment business and operating a Thoroughbred farm. It played out over a two-year process, said Jones. We didn t want all the financial pressures of running the business. Now I can focus on long-range planning and new business approaches. At my age, I know where all the pit bulls are. Reid noted that Jones advice is invaluable. I think we ve meshed well, said Reid, Walnut Green s CEO. When I saw something I couldn t handle, I would go over to his back office and Russell would say, OK, this is what is going to happen. Richard Jones retired from the business. Sadly, he lost a five-month battle to cancer in January. Richie and Russell were pioneers, and amazing men, said Peter Giangiu (continued on page 1270) 1266 THE BLOOD-HORSE March 1,

If the Jones brothers were the first impression you got of Pennsylvania s horse business, we were many lengths ahead. Walnut Green gained the national spotlight last spring when Great Hunter emerged as a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands. Jones purchased the colt s dam, Zenith, for Phil Fanning. Then he advised on the mating that produced Great Hunter, who was foaled at Fanning s Ivy Dell Stud near Unionville. When Fanning, 82, began dispersing his stock a couple of years ago, Jones advised Walnut Green client Dan Ryan to purchase Zenith at the 2006 Keeneland January sale. The sale price was $30,000. Last November, Ryan cashed in, selling Zenith, in foal to Bernardini, for $750,000. An adviser to the Ryan family for nearly three decades, Jones first teamed up with Dan s father, Jim, who bred and co-owned 1983 Belmont (gr. I) winner Caveat. Russell has integrity, said Jim Ryan, 75. He says what he believes is right and cuts through all that politically correct stuff. He s a truth-teller, and God knows we need that in the horse industry today. His biggest successes have been at the Kentucky sales. He showed a regional guy outside Kentucky could compete. Russell Jones is one of the best stories in the Thoroughbred industry. (continued on page 1274) 1270 THE BLOOD-HORSE March 1,

5 Jones is joint master at Mr. Stewart s Cheshire Foxhounds, one of the oldest hunts in America; foxhunting fosters preservation of open spaces he notes (continued from page 1270) Deep Roots Horse-trading has deep roots within the Jones family. In 1642, Jones paternal Swedish ancestors settled near a parcel of land that today is near the Philadelphia airport, while his mother s English side came to the Concord area in One ancestor operated a trading post at the end of the Great Minquas (Indian) Path, a critical spot for Pennsylvania s fur trade in the 17th century. Another owned a livery stable in what is now Upper Darby, Pa. Horses dominated all their lives. In the early 1920s, Jones father ran a dairy farm in Westtown, and later established a successful real estate business. His mother, Carol, was a niece of renowned artist Howard Pyle. Her paintings are in the permanent collection of the National Academy of Design. The firstborn son, Russell was blessed or cursed with plenty of pluck. He took up foxhunting at age 6, and won his first point-to-point race at 13. Russell and his friends would work the thick underbrush with gundogs, hunting hares, rabbits, and pheasants. He attended Trinity College and earned an MBA from Columbia University, but spent most weekends in Chester County galloping horses and riding in point-topoints. Working first in investment banking, he took over the real estate business after his father s death. Gradually, he began dabbling in Thoroughbred sales. I held off as long as I could because I needed to educate four kids, said Jones, 72. But there was always this gravitational pull. Horses are a terrible addiction. He trained a few horses and rode as an amateur in timber and steeplechase races against Chester County stalwarts such as Jonathan Sheppard, George Strawbridge, and Betty Bird. Aboard Jacko, the wiry Jones won the prestigious 1975 Maryland Hunt Cup. The horse was named Timber Horse of the Year five times. When Jacko retired from racing, a second career blossomed as Jones favorite foxhunter. Jones was married to Susan Cocks Small, the daughter of Hall of fame trainer W. Burley Cocks. She died in 2004 at age 62 after a battle with cancer. He later married Donnan Sharp Plumb, a former Olympic rider, who teaches dressage. The couple lives in a stone house that dates back to the late 1700s. The home overlooks a swimming pool, a pond, and gardens where they regularly host his four grown children and seven grandchildren. Four years ago, Jones, along with Bruce Miller and Nina Strawbridge, was named joint master at Mr. Stewart s Cheshire Foxhounds. It s one of the oldest and most celebrated hunts in America. Part of his agreement in the sale of Walnut Green was that Jones could hunt three times a week in the winter. Foxhunting fosters the preservation of open spaces, Jones related. Thousands of acres of land surrounding Unionville are under conservation easements, and the water resources and air quality are protected. We hold fund-raisers and donate the funds to take care of this marvelous land. Prepping for the Sales The payoff for Jones and his farm staff of 12 comes in the form of journeys to the pivotal sales each year. At Saratoga last summer, he bantered with life-long cohorts, giving as well as he got. Jones is easy to spot: the frisky guy in the Walnut Green cap, glasses perched on his nose, his cell phone constantly trilling. His eyes dart about, his chin is firmly set as a line of million-dollar horses snakes its way past him. Last August, Walnut Green sold four (continued on page 1278) 1274 THE BLOOD-HORSE March 1,

Another 22 were sold for $596,500 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic yearling sale, while 17 had their tickets signed for $2,574,000 at the Keene land November breeding stock sale. Russell understands the market and is extremely realistic, said Bill Graves, sales director of Fasig-Tipton. He knows exactly what he has got, and that is why he has a very good strike rate. Braxton Lynch, the youngest daughter of Richard Jones, grew up in the saddle next to her uncle. Russell made the horse business a family affair for all of the Joneses. He s so well-rounded and he s been a leader in so many different aspects, said Lynch, who owns From observing or in the saddle, Jones knows horses Royal Oak Farm near Paris, Ky. He knows horses from standing on the ground and sitting in the saddle. My cousins and I worked at Walnut Green in the summer, and he taught us all about prepping yearlings. It was an invaluable education. Jones and the staff take enormous pride in the prepping of horses headed to sales. What the horses have to look like, how they behave, and the vet reports needing to be in good order that s what we look after, Jones related. We do a lot of work on walking machines, hand-walk them, do lots of grooming. It s a source of irritation when I notice horses not prepared correctly. Jan Rooney has been the farm manager since Walnut Green s rigorous preparation is different from other places she 1278 THE BLOOD-HORSE March 1,

8 has worked over the past 20 years. We re constantly thinking of who they are and where they re going, said Rooney. They re constantly being evaluated as individuals. We hand-walk them on trails for both the exercise and the mental part. So mentally, they are able to deal with new situations. New things are fun, not scary, and that produces a well-adjusted horse. Thinking Big Walnut Green s profile has steadily increased since Reid took over. Each July it stages a yearling show and honors Pennsylvania racing s Man of the Year. It also sponsors Philadelphia Park s racing show and has run spots on racing programs in California and Florida. As for Jones, 25 years after his biggest score at Keeneland, he laments the focus of the industry too many sellers, not enough buyers to race the horses. If you want to breed these lower-level mares, then you ought to be prepared to race their progeny, Jones maintained. If you weren t prepared to race them, you wouldn t breed them. We re reaching a saturation point. The indicators are the buy-back rate is nudging up and the median price is not advancing. Conversely, he s bullish on Pennsylvania racing and breeding. No one has the upward trend in prize money like we have, so racing has a pretty exciting future here, he said. Still, as a whole, racing doesn t qualify as a growth industry. He is encouraged by the influx of promising stallions into the state over the past year. Jones views the slots bonanza as a five- to 10-year program, with the full impact not being realized until the final five years. We allowed ourselves to dream about slots revenues, and for a long time that s what it was, a dream, Jones observed. Still, we always said what if. We persevered. We paid our dues over a long period of time, hoping that some day it would happen. b Northeast/Mid-Atlantic REGIONAL NEWS Pennsylvania Champions named For the first time in its history, the Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association has named a Horse of the Year for the Keystone State. Grade I winner Hard Spun was awarded the title and was also named champion 3-year-old male for. Bred by Michael Moran and Brushwood Stable, the Danzig Turkish Tryst, by Turkoman, colt raced for Fox Hill Farms and was trained by Larry Jones. His biggest victory came in the King s Bishop (gr. I), but he also ran second in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), Haskell Invitational (gr. I), and Breeders Cup Classic Powered by Dodge (gr. I). It was time, said PHBA s executive secretary Mark McDermott of creating a Horse of the Year category. When we initially started giving awards out 100 years ago, just the breeders of stakes winners used to get them. Then we started giving them to the leading earner, and it is just evolving. The two other horses considered for the honor were Mrs. Lindsay and Lucarno, who were named champion 3-year-old filly and turf horse, respectively. It was a good year, McDermott said. Cases could be made for the other two. Mrs. Lindsay was terrific, and Lucarno won a classic over in England. Instead of one good horse, we had three good ones. Mrs. Lindsay, who raced as a homebred for owner Bettina Jenney and trainer Francois Rohaut, won the Prix Vermeille Lucien Barriere (Fr-I) and Prix Penelope (Fr-III) before coming back to North America to win the E.P. Taylor (Can- IT). Bred by Derry Meeting Farm, the Theatrical Vole Vole Monamour, by Woodman, filly also finished second in the Compiled by Amanda h. Duckworth Prix de Diane Hermes (French Oaks, Fr-I). Lucarno did his racing overseas for trainer John Gosden. Campaigned as a homebred for George Strawbridge, the Dynaformer Vignette, by Diesis, colt won the Ladbrokes St. Leger (Eng-I) and Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur (Eng-II) and was named English champion at 14 furlongs and up. Other divisional honors for include: Notgivinmyloveaway, 2-year-old male; Extra Sexy Psychic, 2-year-old female; Master Command, older male; Redaspen, older female; Fabulous Strike, sprinter; Speechifying, claiming horse; Mixed Up, steeplechaser; and Turkish Tryst, broodmare.
