DUCKWORTH Larry Goichman breeds runners with family ties As the world deals with the ongoing economic crisis, Thoroughbred owner and breeder Larry Goichman can rely on an old racing adage in these tough times: no one has ever committed suicide if they have a promising 2-year-old in the barn. After all, it was that sentiment that got him into the industry in the first place. In 1987, the economy was also experiencing turbulent times, particularly when it came to the real estate market. Goichman was a developer, and as a result was having issues at work, but his wife, Jennifer, thought of a clever way to cheer him up. We had two houses that were coming on the market for a lot of money, and the market crashed and we were in deep trouble, said Goichman, who is now 64. We were at a wedding, and I was kind of whining. We were circulating, and my wife ran into an accountant who was setting up horse partnerships. She said, You better talk to my husband because he is kind of depressed and feeling bad about this real estate, and he s always wanted to be involved with horses. Goichman s love affair with animals, and horses in particular, had begun long before that fateful encounter. He went to Cornell University to study veterinary medicine, but somewhere along the way changed his mind and went into agricultural economics instead. Ultimately, he went to New York University for his master s degree and currently runs two businesses a leasing company and a real estate company. I think we had four 2-year-olds, and I did it two years in a row, he said of his initial foray into the sport. It didn t take long to realize that the accountant didn t really like horses, and horses didn t really like him. All he was trying to do was sell accounting services. So in 1989 we bought our first mare and a couple of 2-year-olds on our own. Goichman was still dealing with his real estate issues, but while at a 2-year-old sale, his bloodstock agent passed along the wisdom about what having a good 2-year-old can do for your mental happiness. In 1997, he made a decision that has positively impacted the couple s breeding program ever since. We had very limited success, and so I decided to start going to England for the Tattersalls sale of mares in December, said Goichman. We went every year from We had the horses flown back from England, we bred them to stallions in Kentucky, and ultimately we would drop them in New York State. From the mares Goichman acquired in England, he has bred grade II winners Read the Footnotes and J ray as well as stakes winners Willard Straight, Beebe Lake, and his current 2-year-old star, My Magic Moment, among others. Read the Footnotes ran in the 2004 Kentucky Derby (gr. I), while J ray has won eight stakes races and finished second or third in eight more while racing as a homebred. I think the real turnaround was buying those bloodlines and bringing them back to Kentucky, said Goichman. I was a little bit disappointed in what was available in our November sales. I ve planned the pedigrees, and we have had some success, and you can t beat that. The Breeding game Although Goichman takes pleasure in the success of a good racehorse, he also finds satisfaction in the breeding end of the business. He and his wife split their time between Connecticut and Florida, so their broodmares are boarded at Vivien Malloy s Edition Farm near Hyde Park, N.Y. I enjoy the breeding side of it, said Goichman. I really enjoy the thought that maybe one day I am going to produce a horse that is going to win one of the Breeders Cup races. The Goichmans currently own about broodmares, which is why they stopped going to England to buy them. Baydon Belle and Bubbling Heights, who are the dams of Read the Footnotes and J ray, respectively, are still members of the Goichmans broodmare band, as is My Magic Moment s dam, Sari. Farm manager Annette Orlando has worked with the Goichmans mares for about five years, and she appreciates the couple s realistic approach to the business. Larry s wonderful, she said. When you have bad news, and it is one of those phone calls you hate to make, he s always understanding. Even though he isn t a hands-on owner and has always boarded his horses, he knows the good comes with the bad. He doesn t fly off the handle, and when good things happen, he is ecstatic. He is a good kind of client to have, and The Goichmans multiple graded stakes winner J ray takes the My Charmer I talk to him regularly. He isn t like somebody you send a bill to and they send a check. There is always interaction. Bubbling Heights (Darshaan Bubbling Danseuse, by Arctic Tern) has a weanling Street Cry filly and is in foal to Medaglia d Oro, while Sari (Cozzene Yamuna, by Forty Niner) is in foal to Utopia, and Baydon Belle (Al Nasr Vague Prospect, by Vaguely Noble) is barren for J ray, whose name comes from the moniker Jennifer answered to as a child, is scheduled to make one more start before joining them as a broodmare. When the mares are in Kentucky to be bred, they stay at Catherine Parke s Valkyre Stud near Georgetown. We asked ourselves if we could sell J ray, said Goichman. My wife said, Well, is it going to affect our life financially if we sell her? The answer is it s not. I have been lucky in business, and it s not going to change my lifestyle. So, she said, Why would you want to sell her? While culling is a necessary part of any breeding program, one of Goichman s habits can make it tricky, because he tends to name horses after things to do with Cornell or family members. That s the negative to having family members, joked Goichman, who has been married for 36 years and has two children and two grandchildren. It has been a lot of fun, though. My mother passed away almost two years ago, but before that, we were naming a horse after her. She said, Why are you doing that? I thought you already named a horse after me. I said, No, I don t think so. Who do you have in mind? She answered, Oh, Queen of Battle. My son-in-law was a Ranger, and Queen of Battle was a nickname for the Army, but my mother thought we were naming it after her. Jim Lisa memorable moments Every owner/breeder has moments that stand out among all the rest, and it comes as no surprise that Read the Footnotes and J ray are responsible for some of Goichman s proudest accomplishments. In general, the Goichmans sell the colts they have bred, and that is what happened with Read the Footnotes. The Smoke Glacken colt was bought by Seth Klarman and Jeff Ravich s Klaravich Stables as a 2-year-old for $320,000, and that year he won the Nashua (gr. III) and Remsen (gr. II) Stakes. He came back as a 3-year-old to win the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) and earn a spot in the starting gate of the Run for the Roses. We were doing that like every other sane person, and we go into this bar and there are a lot of people there. We were wearing our Read the Footnotes hats, and some fellow says, Are you connected to Read the Footnotes, and Jennifer says, Yeah, he bred him! I felt like I was Mickey Mantle. For the next half hour, these people thought I was royalty. It was like I was the Queen of England visiting. Although Read the Footnotes ultimately ran seventh in the Derby, in what was his last career start, the experience of breeding a Kentucky Derby starter is something Goichman won t soon forget. That s a pretty good trick. It was a highlight moment when you plan this pedigree for certain reasons and it worked. For all that, it is the 5-year-old Distant View mare J ray who holds an even bigger place in the Goichman family. It s all about J ray, said Goichman. It just doesn t get any better than having a horse that has been able to compete at the highest levels. She s so honest. When she s going to go into a race, she reminds you of George Foreman with that I ve got game look. She s just got that look that says, Come on, ladies, give it your best shot. J ray, who is one of about an eight-horse stable, has run all over the country during her career and earned just shy of $1 million thus far. Forever Together won the Oct. 24 Emirates Airline Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT), but J ray did not race in the Breeders Cup because she wasn t nominated as a foal. When I bred her I thought I would save a bit of money since it wasn t a big pedigree, said Goichman. If she had been eligible, I for sure would have run her. It wasn t only J ray who sat out of the Breeders Cup only to watch one of her competitors race to victory. My Magic Moment ran third by a neck to Maram in the Oct. 1 Miss Grillo Stakes (gr. IIIT), but trainer Tom Albertrani opted not to ship her to California. Maram won the Grey Goose Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and two days later, My Magic Moment took the Missy Moo I Love You Stakes at Belmont. Tom didn t think she was ready to go out to California, said Goichman. I said to Tom, If the horses that came in first and second in the Miss Grillo finish first and second in the Breeders Cup, my wife is going to kill you after she kills me. How do you explain that to your wife? My Magic Moment is a nice problem. She s the one where you say no one has committed suicide with a good 2-year-old. She has game, she is game, and she s a lamb chop. And so, an economic crisis in the 1980s resulted in Goichman finding a passion that is still strong today. It is far more satisfying to me having bred these horses and not bought them, he said. What is most exciting is seeing them shortly after they foal; then you see them every month or so after; you watch them grow; and you see them as yearlings. Suddenly you say, This one I need to keep, and this one I need to keep, and I am selling those.
