2 NORTHEAST/ MID-ATLANTIC BROTHERS As a kid growing up near West Grove, Pa., Mario Pino would lie on his bed flipping through tattered copies of Sports Illustrated, picturing himself as one of those celebrated jockeys of the 1970s. It took a while. In his 28th year of race-riding, Pino realized his dreams. The pilot of the tough-as-nails colt Hard Spun, Pino was on the lead in last year s Kentucky Derby Present by Yum! Brands (gr. I), and poised to steal the show. When you make that far turn, it just hits you like a hammer the roar of the crowd, said Pino of his first Derby ride. It was the most incredible thing I ve ever experienced. To be the first one to hit that wall of sound, it was like an electric shock. Although Street Sense somehow skimmed up the rail to pass his colt to win, that sun-drenched afternoon launched a sensational six-month journey that culminated with Pino s 6,000th win in early November. It was staged at the jockey s home track of Laurel Park in Maryland, where he has scored more than 4,800 victories, easily the most on the circuit. A few days earlier his brother, trainer Michael Pino, had notched his 1,000th win at Delaware Park. Mario was in the irons. Before school, we all were cleaning stalls The big thing was we also learned horsemanship. MICHAEL PINO 1 As kids, the three (brothers) of us raced our ponies across a pasture like wild Indians, Michael recalled with a laugh. Mario was a real good rider; we just didn t realize it. He was born to be a jockey. Pino became the 15th jockey in North America to reach the lofty 6,000-win mark. Tears streamed down the faces of Mario and his wife, Christina, as they were greeted by a crush of family members, friends, and fellow jockeys in Laurel s winner s circle. Everything just came together perfectly, he recalled. I think God made it perfect. Winning for my brother in a nice, (continued on page 846) 842 THE BLOOD-HORSE FEBRUARY 9, 2008 BloodHorseNOW.com

11 NORTHEAST/MID-ATLANTIC Boston Common, winner of the 2002 Jerome Handicap, remains Michael s most successful runner to date BARBARA D. LIVINGSTON (continued from page 842) quality race and everybody being there. As a kid, I dreamed big dreams, and here I was stepping into racing s history book. How could anyone ask for anything better? His birth certificate says 46, but Pino rides as many full cards as he did when he was 26. At a juncture when most riders are contemplating life after racing, Pino rode Hard Spun to runner-up finishes in not only the Derby, but also the Breeders Cup Classic - Powered by Dodge (gr. I). They also snatched the King s Bishop (gr. I) and the Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II). Speedy Hard Spun turned the tables on Street Sense in two out of their last three races. It was a breakout year for Pino as the regular rider of major stakes winners, including Diabolical, winner of the $260,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (gr. II) at Saratoga. When I first started, I got some good advice: When you re a good passenger, you re a good jockey, he said. I like the animals. I like the competition and the thrill of racing. Since the 1940s, the Pino family had been in the mushroom business in Delaware, then later in southern Chester County, Pa. By the 1960s, Mario Pino Sr. was operating a thriving business hauling mushrooms from his small farms in Oxford and later West Grove. The elder Pino also boarded Arabian show horses at their West Grove farm, where his three sons tended to them and helped in preparing the yearlings. We rode some competitions like Devon (Horse Show), but we didn t get big into it, said the youngest brother, Mark Pino, a farrier. We got more and more into the Mario reaches the 6,000-win milestone Nov. 7, 2007 JIM McCUE/MARYLAND JOCKEY CLUB racing game. There was an exercise rider from Delaware Park who kept a yearling at our farm. He would come out and jack up the stirrups and Mario would ride those Arabians just like a race jockey when Dad wasn t there. He taught Mario how to twirl a whip. Convinced Mario had the makings of a pro jockey, one day the exercise rider drove the 13-year-old to Delaware Park. I watched him gallop horses in the morning, recalled Mario, his eyes sparkling. I just loved all the activity. It bit me right there. After a year of high school, Pino departed to follow his dream, exercising horses at Laurel, Pimlico, and Bowie. You grow up right away, Mario said. I never thought of it as work the first 15 years. Later, it did become work, but it was all good. In the summer of 1977, Mario turned up in Saratoga, galloping horses for trainer Joe Cantey. Mark Pino tagged along. My eyes were as wide as silver dollars, recalled Mark, then 13. We had a tiny apartment outside town. When Mario rode horses in the morning, I d rake a shedrow and help the grooms. We would shower up, then come back to watch the races. Saw Angel Cordero one day. Wow! The time up there was one of my most memorable. Mario s first trip to the winner s circle 846 THE BLOOD-HORSE FEBRUARY 9, 2008 BloodHorseNOW.com

How dominant has Pino been? He has tallied a dozen 200-win seasons and was ranked in the top five of the Maryland standings every year for 25 straight years before heading to Delaware Park five years ago. Considered a throwback to jockeys of yesteryear, the humble rider downplays his considerable success, claiming it s a mix of staying healthy and good luck. In truth, Pino is a natural on horseback who possesses a quiet intensity. He s always at the top of my list, noted trainer Dr. John R. Fisher. Mario has enormous skill and knowledge, but the other part is his personality. He is a pretty mellow guy, so the highs aren t as high, and the lows aren t as low. I ve never seen him angry after a race. He s as steady as they come. Michael Pino credits his success in the racing game to the work ethic his father instilled. Mario was boss No. 1 and I was boss No. 2, so Mark got stuck with all the bad jobs, said Michael with a grin. Before school, we all were cleaning stalls; you name it. He scored his first training win with Too Many Lovers at Atlantic City Racetrack in 1983 with Mario aboard. Pino stables roughly 55 horses at Delaware Park, Philadelphia Park, and Maryland racetracks, and heads to Gulfstream Park in the winter. Michael helps Ryan pick out yearlings and 2-year-olds. He puts a strong emphasis on the horse s mind, observed Ryan. If a horse shows ability, Michael gives him plenty of time to develop. Michael hasn t had it easy. He has moved his stable several places. But he s a tough son of a gun, a very determined guy. His personality traits are very similar to his brothers. As for Mark, now 44, his apprenticeship began in 1981 under the legendary Sonny Connors, who shod for E.P. Taylor s Windfields Farm and Allaire du Pont s Woodstock Farm near Chesapeake City, Md. Taylor owned the legendary stallion Northern Dancer, while du Pont had Kelso, the only five-time Horse of the Year ( ). As a young child, Mark remembers sitting for hours watching Connors shoe horses. Then at age 16, he jumped in. Sonny said, Meet me at 8:30. If you show up and help me out, you ll learn a lot, recalled Mark. First day, in the first few minutes, I was right under a horse. It was exciting to see these horses you had read about as a kid: The Minstrel, Halo, Northern Dancer, and Kelso. I still have a picture of me trimming Northern Dancer. At age 21, Mark headed to Laurel and Bowie racetracks in Maryland, becoming a journeyman farrier. We all took the hard way, Mark said with a shrug. Mario lived on the backside for a couple of years. I had an unpaid apprenticeship, so I washed dishes at night to come up with spending money. Michael thought about quitting a number of times. We all stuck with it because we wanted to be part of the game. Mark returned to the Chester County region in 1990 to work for, among others, trainers Jonathan Sheppard, Graham Motion, and Fisher, the founder of the Fair Hill Training Center. Fisher calls him a master craftsman. He is very meticulous and very adaptive, said Fisher. He s always trying to figure out what we can do to make the situation better. Like Mario, he s quiet, and I find him supremely patient. Outside a barn at Fair Hill, Mark lifts a filly s foot and carefully trims the hoof using a knife and file. I make sure the horse is balanced and is hitting the ground evenly, he said. 19 NORTHEAST/MID-ATLANTIC can make the horse better. Hanging outside Larry Jones barn at Delaware Park, Mario s agent, Bill Castle, points out that the jockey could have ridden in New York or at other bigger tracks, but he and Christina chose to raise their three daughters, Danielle, Victoria, and Evana, in Maryland. Mario s career has been about how he has stayed here for his family and been happy, said Castle. You look at Mario and see what he has given to the sport and his family. He s truly a role model. When Mario moved his tack to slotsenriched Delaware Park, he found something he had been missing at the financially-strapped Maryland tracks trainers with really fast horses. It gave me a new spark, acknowledged Pino, who was a finalist for the 2007 George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award. I d been riding in Maryland for 23 years, and it had been great to me, but at Delaware, I got to meet different riders and horsemen. One of those was Jones. A transplanted Kentuckian who peers out from under his umbrella-like white Stetson, Jones and his wife/assistant trainer, Cindy, relocated to Delaware Park in When Mario joined our team, we instantly got stronger, Jones related. He brings a ton of experience, and Mario s pretty versatile. He s got lots of patience. He s a quick read, anticipates what other horses will do, and adjusts quickly. He s a horseman; horses respond to him. Pino returns the kudos. Larry is a super horseman and downto-earth person, he said. I fit into his program. We started winning. Then Hard Spun showed up on the scene. Larry did a tremendous job, Mario said. He cranked him up for the King s Bishop, and he ran like a sprinter. The horse had heart, athleticism, and class. As the year went on, he didn t fall off; he got better and better. He had no quirks. Hard Spun fought in every race, kept digging. He was a professional racehorse. I would love to go at Curlin again this year. Still, I m happy he s got a good life. With his speed, staying power, and class, he ll make a great stallion. A proponent of yoga, Mario also works out regularly and runs two miles every other day. At 112 pounds, he s the same weight he was at age 15. He says he is in the best shape of his career, and retiring is still far down the road. Having traveled to racing s mountaintop, Mario craves more. It was so much fun, he said. The feeling in the post parade at the Derby was just awesome. Throughout the whole year, I think I handled all the pressure and situations pretty well. I would love to get the opportunity to do it again. b Northeast/Mid-Atlantic REGIONAL NEWS COMPILED BY AMANDA H. DUCKWORTH EQUINE SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED According to the newly released 2006 Equine Survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture s Virginia Field Office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service, the number of horses, ponies, and mules in Virginia has increased 26% since When you do a survey, you never have a number in mind because that can bias you, said Dave Mueller, deputy director of the Virginia field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service. But we were not surprised to see that the number went up. We just didn t know how much it would go up by. As of Nov. 1, 2006, there were an estimated 215,000 horses, ponies, and mules in the state, up from the 170,000 reported June 1, The survey, which was sent to more than 28,000 people, aimed to find out more about the industry in the state, and roughly 20,000 responded. Questions in the survey included: number of equines by breed; number of equines by primary use; number and value of equines sold; number of workers employed; costs incurred for labor; costs incurred for supplies, equipment, land, and buildings; and geographic locality of the equines. Obviously, when you get a mail return like we got, the horse industry really believes in what we are doing, Mueller said. That is always gratifying. Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds were the two leading breeds in Virginia at 49,000 and 30,900 head, respectively. The 215,000 equines were located on 41,000 equine operations throughout the state, up 41% from Most of the operations are located in the central and northern parts of the state. The total value of all equines was $1.65 billion, up 13% from 2001, while average value per equine decreased 10% to $7,697. Equines located in the northern and central districts accounted for nearly 74% of the total value of all equines. Virginia equine operations spent $783 million during 2006 caring for equines, compared to $505 million for Feed and bedding comprised the largest expense category at $99.6 million. Equipment purchases and capital improvements followed at $92 million and $72.6 million, respectively. Equine expenses covering upkeep-related items accounted for 77% of all expenses. There were 15,600 equines sold in Virginia during 2006, which was up 21%. The total sales value was more than $107 million. These sales place equines as the sixth-largest commodity in Virginia based on cash receipts. About 66% of the total value of sales occurred in the northern district. If funding is available, the survey will be conducted again in NYTB OFFICERS ELECTED At a Jan. 28 organizational meeting of New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Saratoga native Michael McMahon was re-elected as president for a second term.
