4 The Valley π OF π Champions Champion sires and champion racehorses have emerged from Widden to make their mark on racing throughout the world, their success shared by people from all walks of life, who are united by a common passion for the thoroughbred. As long as there have been thoroughbred yearling sales in Australia, Widden Stud has been in the business of breeding and selling young racehorses and after 146 years, we are still at the top of our game. The art of breeding commercial thoroughbreds and champion racehorses has been passed seamlessly from father to son and Widden Stud is now progressing under the excellent stewardship of Antony Thompson, a seventh generation descendant of John Thompson, who emigrated from England in 1832 with little but a burning ambition to succeed. As much as our business revolves around the horse, it is also about the people and we love to share our success, so we invite you to come join us in our quest to breed great thoroughbreds and enjoy all that Widden Stud has to offer. 2

6 Where π THE π Journey Begins Geography and Mother Nature have bestowed tremendous natural gifts on Widden Stud making it one of the most picturesque farms in the world, offering an unparalleled environment for young thoroughbreds. Located on 7,000 acres of spectacular horse country in the Widden Valley, our farm features rich alluvial creek flats sheltered by magnificent sandstone cliffs providing a pristine and tranquil environment in which our bloodstock can thrive and grow. A perfectly balanced environment produces well grown yearlings with good bone, strong muscles and all the physical attributes needed for success. Allowed to roam free in huge spacious paddocks our young thoroughbreds run in groups to develop the competitive instincts and mental toughness that will one day make them superior athletes. 4

19 THE ULTIMATE ROCK SON Nicks Your Song is a spectacular WFA Group One winning sprinter. An individual with an exceptional physique, he is by Danehill s brilliant son, Fastnet Rock. Fastnet Rock carries Nijinsky II through Royal Academy, a very close relative to Storm Bird and Fastnet Rock has been exceptional with Storm Bird line mares, including through Storm Cat and Bluebird. Fastnet Rock has done extremely well over mares descending from Nureyev (including through Peintre Celebre and Stravinsky. There is also a grade two winner by Fastnet Rock out of a mare by Dehere, a son of Deputy Minister. The cross of Fastnet Rock over Mr. Prospector line mares has been a very successful one with 11 stakes winners. Successful branches of this line include Lion Cavern (a brother to Gone West), Kingmambo and Woodman. Other good sources of Mr. Prospector would include Umatilla, Secret Savings, Dubawi, Street Cry, Unbridled s Song and Geiger Counter. It could also prove worthwhile to cross Your Song over mares from his own broodmare sire line, that of Halo, through daughters of More Than Ready. Nijinsky II also combines extremely well through Tom Fool, whose line is prevalent in Australia through Lunchtime, and his son, Snippets, who is broodmare sire of four Fastnet Rock Group winners. Snippets is sire of Pins, Snowland, Snippetson, Picnicker and Spartacus. Fastnet Rock sired Smart Missile out of a mare by Comic Strip, who is by Red Ransom, and that horse s sire-sons such as Charge Forward would work well. From the Sir Tristram line there are Group One winners from mares by Sir Tristram himself, and Zabeel (broodmare sire of Atlantic Jewel). Multiple Group One winning filly Sea Siren also highlights the success of the Fastnet Rock - Success Express cross & this sire-line would also appear to be nicely suited to Your Song s paternal & maternal pedigree. Yearlings have sold for up to $500k, $450k, $425k, $400k, $370k etc. Nicks Champion Australian Two-Year-Old and Golden Slipper winner, Stratum is now the outstanding stallion son of sire of sires, Redoute s Choice. Stratum is ideally-bred to cross with mares from the Sir Tristram line, and he has Australasian Oaks (Gr I) heroine STREAMA out of a mare by Sovereign Red. The Sir Tristram strain can also be brought in through Zabeel, Lonhro and Reset From Star Kingdom line mares, Stratum already has two stakes winners from daughters of Marscay, Stratum s Champion CRYSTAL LILY, is out of a daughter of Snippets, and his Group One winner SOUTHERN LORD is out of a mare by Rory s Jester. Stratum is a Northern Dancer line horse, but that strain will be in the fifth generation of his foals, and he could cross well over Northern Dancer through such lines as Nijinsky II, Nureyev and Redoute s Choice affinity sire Last Tycoon however the Danzig sire line is also proving successful. Stratum stakes winners include mares by Grand Lodge (by Chief s Crown) and Blackfriars. Anabaa, and Cape Cross are two sires that would also work nicely. From Mr. Prospector line mares, Stratum has stakes winners out of mares by Hussonet and Geiger Counter. Other strains that appeal include Roberto, including At Talaq, and Red Ransom; Halo through Don t Say Halo, More Than Ready, and Sunday Silence. An elite sire in the making has quality books to follow on from this season. Nicks The cross of More Than Ready over Northern Dancer line stakes winners has already produced nearly 50 stakes winners. Sebring is sire of stakes winner BRING A RING out of a mare by Hennessy, a son of Storm Cat (by Storm Bird, also sire of Bluebird). Sebring is a product of the phenomenally successful More Than Ready/ Danehill cross, but he already has a stakes performer out of a Danehill line mares and reintroducing this strain, particularly through Danehill/Star Kingdom, Danehill/Mr. Prospector and Danehill/Hail to Reason cross could also be interesting. Danzig, in particular through Anabaa, has also worked already with Sebring producing stakes winner DISSIDENT. More Than Ready has a strong record with a wide range of Mr. Prospector line mares, and branches to consider here Elusive Quality, Seeking the Gold (via Secret Savings and Dubawi) and Street Cry and sons. Mares by Rory s Jester, would bring together the threeparts-sister and brother, Far Vista and Baguette. We can also note that Sebring already has first crop Group winner CRITERION, out of mare by Bite the Bullet, a son of Spectacular Bid and very closely related to Spectacular Spy. 25 A Leading first season sire - stakes horses include; THE VOICE, SWING VOTE & MOUNT ZERO Gr 1 winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington m Dual track record breaker, including the Randwick 1200m Gr 1 W.F.A performer at 3 & the fastest son of Champion Sire Encosta de Lago Descendent of the immortal Rough Shod, from family of Champion Sires Sadler s Wells and Nureyev Dubbed by the Australian racing media as the Equine Usain Bolt Nicks Northern Meteor has already sired first crop Group winner THE VOICE out of a mare by a son of Sadler s Wells, a brother to Northern Meteor s grandsire, Fairy King. This also suggests mares descending from other relatives such as Nureyev, Yeats and Perugino (sire of Testa Rossa) would suit, others from this female line such as Thatch/Thatching, Geiger Counter and Jade Robbery also look interesting. The cross of Encosta de Lago over mares descending from Danehill & sons such as Redoute s Choice & Flying Spur has been a successful one. It could also be worth considering bringing in Danzig through sires such as Anabaa and Green Desert. Encosta de Lago has also enjoyed success with mares descending from that other great domestic strain, Star Kingdom, particularly with mares descending from Biscay, through Bletchingly (Canny Lad and Kenny s Best Pal) and Marscay. Northern Meteor is out of a mare by Fappiano, one of the most outstanding sons of Mr. Prospector, and it may pay to try Northern Meteor back over Mr. Prospector line mares. Star Witness is inbred three times to Northern Dancer, and is free of Mr. Prospector, an excellent foil for that strain This suggests trying mares by such as Elusive Quality, Zafonic, Machiavellian (through Street Cry),Thunder Gulch, Woodman, Kingmambo, El Moxie, Seeking the Gold (sire of Secret Savings). The cross of Star Witness over mares descending from Sir Tristram, appears to have good potential. Particularly interesting are Zabeel, and Lonhro. From the Star Kingdom line, Star Witness s sire, Starcraft has graded stakes winner STARCHEEKA out of a mare by Canny Lad. As mentioned, Star Witness has three crosses of Northern Dancer, but those strains will be in the fifth and sixth generations of his foals, therefore he may cross well over certain Northern Dancer lines. Obvious targets will include Fairy King (Encosta de Lago) and Perugino (sire of Testa Rossa). Star Witness does carry Danehill, but that strain will be back in the fourth generation of his foals, opening Star Witness to crosses with mares from that line. From the same Hail to Reason/Turn-to line, as Roberto comes Halo, whose Australian representatives include Don t Say Halo and More Than Ready. The Danzig cross with mares descending from Sir Tristram has been a hugely successful one, and Bianconi would be well suited from mares by Zabeel, Reset and Lonhro. From the Mr. Prospector line, Bianconi has worked successfully and daughters of Woodman, Umatilla, Thunder Gulch, Elusive Quality, Seeking the Gold and Street Cry would suit. 31 Widely regarded as Australia s Best Value Sire 15 stakes horses incl. NOBBY SNIP, THAT S THE ONE, REBELSON & FUERZA The quintessential Australian sire; tough, fast, strong types - suited to Australian conditions From Blue Hen mare Snowdrift & full brother to Gr 1 winner Snowland Yearlings have sold for up to $185,000, $180,000, $180,000, $170,000 etc. An imposing, beautifully balanced individual ideally suited to Danehill line mares Nicks Snippetson represents what is already established as the strongest cross for his sire Snippets, that with Northern Dancer line mares. Snippetson already has two Northern Dancer crosses, but they will be 5 x 5 in his foals, so further Northern Dancer can work here. Crossing Snippetson back over mares from his Danzig branch should also work well. The cross with Danehill via Redoute s Choice has already produced a Snippetson group winner, and Danzig might also work well here through Chief s Crown, Grand Lodge, Snaadee and Anabaa. Other than Northern Dancer, the most successful cross for Snippets has been with mares from the Star Kingdom line, including through Biscay, via Marscay and Bletchingly; Kaoru Star (through Luskin Star) and Zephyr Bay. It could also be worth experimenting with daughters of Canny Lad. Other influences that could prove positive include Red Ransom, Quest For Fame, Gilded Time, Crown Jester/Rory s Jester and Zeditave/Strategic. Further analysis on Snippetson can be found at Snippetson x Danzig/ Danehill... a great cross! 50% of Snippetson's Stakes performers are from Danzig line mares: ex Nothin Leica Dane Group One placed 2yo FUERZA mare.
