4 Entries for the 10 handicaps at The Festival revealed Thursday, February 25, 2016 A total of 965 entries are unveiled today for the 10 handicaps staged at The Festival. Champion Day, Tuesday, March 15, plays host to the 100,000 Grade Three Ultima Handicap Chase (2.50pm, 107 entries, 3m 1f) and the 65,000 Listed Close Brothers Novices Handicap Chase (5.30pm, 68 entries, 2m 4½f). Two of the past three winners scorer Holywell (Jonjo O Neill) and 2013 winner Golden Chieftain (Colin Tizzard) - are among the entries for the Ultima Handicap Chase while the possible starters in the Close Brothers Novices Handicap Chase include last year s Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle second Bouvreuil (Paul Nicholls). The ultra-competitve 90,000 Grade Three Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle (2.50pm, 155 entries, 2m 5f) takes place on Ladies Day, Wednesday, March 16 along with the 75,000 Grade Three Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle (4.50pm, 50 entries, 2m ½f). Vying for favouritism in the Coral Cup are Politologue (Paul Nicholls) and Diamond King (Gordon Elliott) while Gordon Elliott is also responsible for the current favourite in the Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, the J P McManus-owned Campeador. Three handicaps take place on St Patrick s Thursday, March 17, the 90,000 Listed Pertemps Network Final Handicap Hurdle (2.10pm, 55 entries, 3m), the 100,000 Grade Three Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase (4.10pm, 103 entries, 2m 5f) and the concluding 65,000 Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Handicap Chase (5.30pm, 108 entries, 3m 2f, for amateur riders). Nicky Henderson enjoyed his first success in the Pertemps Final last year and is responsible this year for leading contender Cup Final. Taquin Du Seuil (Jonjo O Neill) landed the JLT Novices Chase at The Festival in 2014 and won at Warwick earlier this month, propelling him to the head of the market for the Brown Advisory and Merriebelle Stable Plate. Doctor Harper (David Pipe) is an exciting novice and he currently heads the market for the Fulke Walwyn Kim Challenge Cup Handicap Chase, a race his stable won last year with The Package. There would be no more appropriate winner of the 90,000 Grade Three Vincent O Brien County Handicap Hurdle (2.10pm, 96 entries, 2m 1f) than Henry Higgins who is trained by Charles O Brien, son of the legendary trainer who the race is run in honour of. Also take place on Gold Cup Day is the 60,000 Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle (4.50pm, 158 entries, 2m 4½f). David Pipe has five entries in the race run in honour of his father. The Festival draws to a close with the 100,000 Grade Three Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Handicap Chase (5.30pm, 65 entries, 2m ½f). This race commemorates Nicky Henderson s late father Johnny and the most successful trainer of all time at The Festival has one entry with Lough Kent. Weights for all handicaps at The Festival will be revealed at Cheltenham Racecourse on Wednesday, March 2. Changes at The Festival for 2016 The Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase, which was run as a handicap up to and including last year, becomes a conditions event this year. Entries for this contest will be released next Wednesday, March 2. Earlier this season, Cheltenham Racecourse and the British Horseracing Authority announced a change to the declaration arrangements for the 10 handicaps staged at The Festival. Under the new arrangements, a horse will not be permitted to be declared to run if they are already due to run in another handicap at The Festival which has yet to take place. 230

5 This is being done to help ensure that declared runners are intended rather than possible participants. Declarations to run for all the handicaps at The Festival are made 24 hours beforehand so the change only concerns races the following day meaning it will still remain possible for a horse to appear twice in handicaps at The Festival. 14 Ultima Handicap Chase Facts and Figures (since 1946) BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Ultima Handicap Chase was sponsored between 1981 and 1996 by the Ritz Club. Astec Buzz Shop backed the race in 1997, with William Hill being the sponsor from 1998 to Leading owner Andy Stewart and his family were the backers in 2011 in support of Spinal Research. JLT (Jardine Lloyd Thompson) took over the sponsorship in 2012, before switching in 2014 to the JLT Novices Chase on St Patrick s Thursday of The Festival. The 2014 renewal was backed by Baylis & Harding Affordable Luxury and Ultima took over the sponsorship in FIELD SIZE The smallest field was seven in 1993 and the largest field of 24 lined up in 1963, 2010 and The current safety limit is 24. WEIGHTS Future Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Silver Fame carried the welter burden of 12st 7lb to victory in 1950, while Tipping Tim (1992), Maamur (1996) and Alfie Sherrin (2012) have all been successful off 10st.
