Brrrrr! It s full of the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good? US Dressage Finals at Kentucky Horse Park, our NODA year end banquet, new volunteers, USDF Awards won by NODA, and Thanksgiving. The bad? Colder, shorter days. The ugly? Winter and SNOW are coming! Are you looking forward to the November 18 banquet? Have you Barb Soukup & Hero sent in your RSVP due November 1. You must RSVP to attend. You won t want to miss this year s celebration. So much is happening with all the year-end awards, Silent & Chinese Auction donations, numerous door and raffle prizes, and much more! I personally enjoy attending for the chance to get together with friends in a relaxed fun atmosphere, and to enjoy a delicious brunch buffet. Want to earn valuable free raffle tickets for fabulous prizes? Help our furry dog and cat friends in need by bringing a donation to the banquet for the Geauga County Dog & Cat (No-Kill) Shelter. If you renew or join NODA for 2019, you ll receive another free raffle ticket AND be entered into a 2020 NODA Membership drawing! 5 NODA Newsletter Staff Announcement NODA welcomes Mosie Welch as new Lead Editor for NODA News beginning with the next issue. She will be working closely with Co-Editor, Heidi Miller, newsletter staff, executive board, and committee chairs to bring our members local, regional, and national dressage news and information. Currently Mosie submits monthly news and articles to the Horseman s Corral magazine for NODA and writes occasional articles for NODA NEWS. As a former successful NODA NEWS Co-Editor, Mosie brings a wealth of experience to her Lead Editor role. She enjoys behind the scenes work and is looking forward to continuing the tradition of excellence established by past editors which have made the NODA NEWS an awardwinning newsletter. Mosie is very happy that she and her 2008 Welsh cross pony, Aleksandr Robyn (aka Alaska,) had the opportunity to ride in the NODA Schooling Show series and the July NODA Ride-a-Test Clinic in Alaska is a fun guy who loves his turn-out, enjoys trail and schooling dressage, but excels at pony rides for the grandkids. Mosie enjoys family time with her husband, Denis, her Friesian mare, Sietske, Alaska, and their two standard Poodles, Supai and Piegan. When she isn t riding, she also treasures time with their grandchildren, taking dance lessons, hiking, and gardening. We hope all our members will take the opportunity to renew their newsletter commitment by providing news, photos, and articles. Change can be a little bumpy, so to ensure a smooth transition, Linda Cooley, NODA s interim lead editor, will be providing back-up and guidance. 6 Youth News with Christa Sandy, JR/YR Liaison September 29 FREE Junior/Young Rider Dressage Clinic & Pictures NODA and I extend a heartfelt thank you to Kristin Stein and Betsy Rebar Sell for hosting the September 29 FREE Junior/Young Rider Dressage Clinic for NODA members at Betsy s beautiful Shade Tree Farm in Bath, Ohio. Six NODA youth riders benefited from 45 minute private lessons with Betsy and Kristin. The timing of the clinic was perfect because it was held one week before the October NODA Championship Show weekend. Maria Sandy & Mocha Josie Cooper & Arwen with Betsy Rebar Sell In addition to the exceptional dressage instruction and gorgeous environment at Shade Tree Farm, NODA provided a tasty breakfast of bagels, muffins, fruit and juice. This provided an opportunity for riders and parents to get to know one another. Danielle Northup & Charley Lauren Heba & Holly Everyone enjoyed the clinic and were grateful for this valuable learning experience. NODA looks forward to offering more opportunities such as this. It allows us to provide youth members a way to enhance their dressage knowledge and assist in their journey of developing and improving their dressage skills. Our Friday dressage ring set up crew was fantastic. We measured the outside ring and started setting up the ring at 4:50 pm and were done by 5:05 pm. Definitely a record. The fun continued when we tweaked the inside ring. In seemingly no time, we had both rings marked for small and large dimensions and ready for the weekend shows! For Saturday, we ordered dry weather and actually got it... our first really dry show all season. Except for a 10 minute downpour that soaked one rider/horse, the rain held off and we had a wonderful, if hot and humid, show. Sunday s very exciting Championship show enjoyed cooler temperatures but the humidity was unreal. It sure takes a LOT of volunteers to run a show and even more to run a Championship weekend! We are so very fortunate to have so many volunteers step up and help out! Big thanks to our Friday dressage ring set-up crew: Rachel Aderhold, Michelle Brogan, Halle Clause, Victoria Patterson-Pirko, Ellie Pridemore, Carmella Shale, Diana Shale, Linda Toll and April Woodward. The Saturday show was fully staffed with another crew of great volunteers. Special thanks to Elizabeth Bodnovich, Halle Clause, Lauren Heba, Heidi Miller, Greg Overbaugh, Sally Pla, Nicole Rader, Heather Soones, Michelle Tyner, Ruth Wagner and Taya Workman-Byers. On Sunday we had even more volunteers who gave us so much time and energy! A big thank you to Rachel Aderhold, Arielle Brodkey, Josephine Cooper, Fran Cverna, Carol Holasz, Kathy Kirchner, Heidi Miller, Allison Morris, Steve Mooney, Greg Overbaugh, Beth Scalabrino, Heather Soones, Richard Tyner, Mary Whitely, and Taya Workman-Byers. Thanks to Chagrin Valley Farms for hosting another outstanding weekend! Big shout out and thank you to ALL our judges: Roberta Carleton (who is now a r!), Nicky Vogel (R) for judging all weekend, Sara Justice (L) and Danielle Menteer (L) for judging Sunday morning when our show overflowed, and to Barb Soukup (L*) for pinch hitting the very last class so our judge could catch a flight. It has been a wonderful show season. Niki Sackman, Show Secretary extraordinaire (pictured left), and I are so thankful to all of our volunteers, competitors and friends who make all of the work to put together a show season worth it!

16 The Tower of Babble and Creating a Common Language by Jessica Austin I have long been fascinated by dressage theory, and most of my library at home consists of dressage theory and instruction manuals. More recently I have become interested in alternative tomes which explain concepts in a more "grassroots" fashion for the less talented rider, of which I consider myself. In my mind I hope that the more ways I examine a subject the better understanding I will ultimately have. I am reminded of the parable of the blind men examining an elephant. "Hey, the elephant is a pillar," said the first man who touched his leg. "Oh, no, it is like a rope," said the second man who touched the tail. "Oh, no, it is like a thick branch of a tree," said the third man who touched the trunk of the elephant. "It is like a big hand fan" said the fourth man who touched the ear of the elephant. "It is like a huge wall," said the fifth man who touched the belly of the elephant. "It is like a solid pipe," Said the sixth man who touched the tusk of the elephant. There is an account in the Bible of how pride led a group of people to build a tower as high as they could with the belief that they would become like God. In response God created multiple languages so that the people no longer understood one another and as a result spread throughout the earth. There are days when I feel that dressage is a different language and struggle to understand what various common dressage phrases mean. I was the fortunate recipient of a 2018 NODA scholarship which I used for an intensive lesson week with my instructor and trainer Ali Weeks of Revelations Dressage. As a result, I was able to translate some of those common phrases into feelings and ideas that made sense to me. Here are the horse phrases I have decoded. Rounder on the Outside If I only had a penny for every time I heard that phrase in my lessons. The benefit of riding in my trainer s arena is that there are gorgeous mirrors on every side. Therefore, I was 125% sure that NODA News 2018 Page 16 my mare was quite round. The whole outside part, I wasn t sure why outside versus inside mattered since surely Ali was referring to the shape of my mare s neck? I could clearly see that her face was on the vertical and her neck was down and fairly round. The only way I thought I could make her more round would be to pull on the reins and bring her face behind the vertical which from my reading I have found is considered harmful and despicable. So, I wracked my brain trying to figure out how my obviously round horse could not appear round to my instructor. Perhaps her neck should be bent more to the inside? However, my attempts at that solution were met with the observation that her neck was now overly bent. I was stumped. Finally, in my frustration I stopped the horse, (one of my bad habits but honestly, I don t think I can chew gum and walk at the same time so riding and talking without hitting any walls is just too much), and asked what body part did I need to make more round? The answer was that my mare s back and withers need to come up so that her overall longitudinal shape is round (like a rainbow), rather than a dropped back with an overly flexed neck. Right. Check. I can do that. Or not, because nothing in dressage is ever that easy. Forward Well that one seems obvious, kick her forward. Then I am rushing. Pull on the reins. Then I am on the forehand with the head behind the vertical and the neck braced. Oye! There is no simple answer to this one. I started watching my mare s legs in the mirror. Sure enough, when I would kick her forward, her legs started to do a great impression of a centipede. At this point Ali asked me to describe the circle of aids. My response was seat, legs, hands. That order seemed logical given how many dressage books emphasize the importance of the seat, and the evils of too much hand. Nope, wrong again. Ali asked me to take my legs off my mare and get her to move forward from my seat. Hmmm, that didn t work. Turns out the circle starts with the legs, goes to the seat,

17 The Tower of Babble and Creating a Common Language (Continued) by Jessica Austin and then to the hands. Forward must be created with the legs, but my seat and core need to create balance so that I am not swiping the saddle with my hind end, allowing the horse to fall on its face. I discovered that even the walk can be forward, uphill and balanced when the stars align, and I coordinate all my aids! More Leg More leg more leg and then suddenly I have strained a muscle. I had a rider tell me once she was pretty sure she could pop a watermelon with her thighs. Given my current work schedule there is no way I m going to develop such strong thigh muscles. But then again, even if I could, I m never going to out-muscle a horse. I have seen over and over how sensitive horses are if they sense a fly, yadda yadda. So maybe I need to be smarter not stronger. Ali then said something that made such a difference. She said to let my legs breathe. I played around with that idea, and rather than just gripping when I needed a more definitive aid, I gave small, quick aids. There might be something to this idea! I felt much less resistance and stiffening under me and got more of a response. Definitely a keeper! In Front of the Leg This shouldn t be so difficult, but boy is that a difficult concept to create, especially when the rider isn t 100% committed to being forward and physically able to follow the horse when they respond promptly to aids! This seems to go along with the concepts of forward and leg before seat or hand, but also seems to be the need for less leg due to the horse taking responsibility for thinking forward. I read somewhere that a horse in front of your leg is like the idle on a car, if you release the brakes the car will creep forward on its own. Some vehicles creep forward slowly, others more quickly, correlating to horses with varying temperaments. More Connection I had the mistaken impression that in dressage my mare should be carrying herself which I translated to mean very little weight in my hands. For years I have been fiddling with my hands to try to get her off the bit, only to find out that a connection means having weight, especially in the learning stages when she is not strong or balanced enough to carry all her weight back. Ali told me that sometimes it takes more weight in the hands to help the horse through a stage before it will get lighter. She acknowledged that it might feel awful, but to stick with the learning process for it to improve. I feel as if learning to ride is the proverbial onion. The more I learn the more I realize how much I don t know, and the deeper into the onion layers I delve. NODA Scholarships & Grants Grants Available for Professional NODA Members up to $400! Or Someday I will show Recognized. I thought there was a secret dressage code! Did you know that the NODA website has a fabulous list of links to all the secret codes? All you have to do is click on the LINKS page at to check them out. Here are a few highlights about National and International Horse Federations and Acronyms. FEI: The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (French: Fédération Équestre Internationale, FEI) is the international governing body of equestrian sports, founded in 1921 and affiliated with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The FEI administers the World Equestrian Games (WEG). USEF: The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF of US Equestrian) is the national governing body for most equestrian sports in the United States. Originally it was the American Horse Show Association (AHSA), and then USA Equestriian (USAE), and now it is the USEF. USEF partners with the United States Equestrian Team Foundation (USET) which supports international high performance horses and riders. Governing bodies working under USEF include the United States Hunter/Jumper Association (USHJA), the United States Dressage Federation (USDF) and the United States Eventing Association (USEA). USDF: The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) is the national membership organization dedicated to Dressage. Recognized Shows are licensed and recognized by the USEF and USDF, and they follow their rules which include specific fees plus require horses to have a HID (Horse Identification Number) or a USDF Lifetime Horse Registration (LHR). Planning to compete for USDF Year-End Awards or USDF Regional Championships? A USDF Participating Membership (PM) is required. GMO: NODA is a Group Member Organization (GMO) of the USDF. By joining NODA you become a Group Member (GM) of USDF. You may compete at USEF-licensed/USDF-recognized competitions. You are eligible for USDF Rider Awards. (You will not be able to compete for USDF Year-End Awards or Regional Championships.) You will be able to compete for NODA s Year-End Awards program and for Schooling Show Championships.
