2 Greetings from the President The Northern Ohio Dressage Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit education organization 2016/2017 NODA Executive Board President Dee Liebenthal President@nodarider.org Vice President Christine Thompson VP@nodarider.org Treasurer Nancy Danielson (Text only) Treasurer@nodarider.org Secretary Patti Valencic Secretary@nodarider.org Parliamentarian Dale Lappert Parliamentarian@nodarider.org Directors at Large Mary Lou Gallagher MaryLou-DAL@nodarider.org Barbara Soukup Barb-DAL@nodarider.org Mary Dana Prescott Halle Clause Halle-DAL@nodarider.org Niki Sackman Niki-DAL@nodarider.org Dee Liebenthal and Rens D ear NODA Members, I want to open with very exciting news. Sunday afternoon, December 18th, NODA received a wonderful gift for which we will be forever grateful. As you know, we have been raising funds to purchase a new, more lightweight and portable dressage ring. Thanks to the generosity of Betsy Rebar Sell of Shade Tree Farm, and Kristen Stein of Stein Equine, NODA is getting that longedfor new dressage ring! Many, many thanks to Betsy and Kristen. The generous NODA member donations will allow the purchase of accessories for our dressage rings. NODA is grateful and excited that we will start our 2017 show season with a brand new dressage ring. So, we have arrived at the new year with a great deal of hope, and many plans and goals for I have a lot I want to accomplish or set in motion for our organization during my last year as president of NODA, for two important reasons: I have a long list of things I want to complete and/or set in motion for NODA before the end of my last term, and putting that list out there holds me accountable. We must hold our organization, its members, and the board to the responsibility of continued growth through new ideas and forward thinking leadership. After 2017 I intend to continue to work hard for NODA but in other capacities. We need new blood in charge. All organizations need an infusion of new thoughts and perspectives. There will be no change in my decision so we have a year to find someone to take this organization forward. If any of you might be even remotely interested in being president of NODA, let s talk about it now. There are many different types of people who can successfully do this job. I didn t think I was right for the position, but what I didn t realize at the time was how much help and support I would have from so many others. I was mentored by Lisa Gorretta, past president Dale Lappert, and many others. In the end, the focus of this job is to help the organization stay relevant to its members while staying true to NODA s mission statement. The only qualifications you must have are a love for the dressage community and willingness to give your time. Want to shadow me? I am certainly willing to take on any interested members. Some of the 2017 plans: Fill all open positions on the NODA board and committees Implement a reward system for volunteers volunteers are NODA s most important asset. NODA News 2017 Page 2

4 President s Letter, continued Set in motion the ground work for two big educational event weekends, like an L program and/or clinic/symposium weekend. Please send me your ideas about what you would like NODA to sponsor. Data base for accessing our Historical Archives. Increase the amount of each individual professional grant that is awarded Get an online link for ease in renewing membership, banquet reservations, and making donations. Complete all job descriptions Thank you to Victoria Patterson-Pirko, who has very generously taken over the storage of our dressage rings. She will store the old and the new for us at her farm. This move has helped us save the cost of an outside storage locker which, as most of you know, can be very expensive. She and Sally Burton have done a ton of research and leg work looking at and advising us on used rings that have been for sale. Christine Thompson helped this team by assisting Sally and Victoria in emptying out the locker. They found lots of interesting gems from NODA s past. We continue to seek help in several areas. We are looking for a couple of members to help with the Newsletter each month. We need someone to handle classified ads and someone to handle commercial advertisers. These two jobs can be handled by one person or two people. We are also looking for someone to take over the annual updating of NODA s Handbook. Fran Cverna has it down to a science and will get you started. Fran will continue as Membership Chair, but has asked to pass responsibility for the handbook to someone else as she will be taking over as chair of the Historical Committee. With her experience creating and managing data bases, she will be handling the next step of creating an actual data base for organized access to our archives. Taking over the production of the handbook is a way to earn your NODA bucks while at home. This January issue is devoted to the accomplishments of 2016 but also the hopes for You will find our event schedule so far for Mark your calendars and sign up early for our shows. Last year we filled up fast and we don t want you to miss out during the 2017 season for your favorite shows. Important Schooling Show Championship Information I want to make you all aware of an important change in volunteering and how it will affect you and your participation in the Championship Show for 2017: Beginning in 2017, to qualify for the Championship Show you will be required to work four (4) volunteer hours at a NODA schooling show during the competition season. Those earned hours can also be used for year-end awards. Details will follow. Stay warm during these cold months! Dee Liebenthal, President NODA News 2017 Page 4

6 NODA News 2017 Page 6 US Dressage Finals The Ultimate Experience By Dr. Jeni Gaffney A ttending USDF Finals is a wonderful and unique experience whether you are a competitor, volunteer or a spectator. It is a National competition featuring top professionals and adult amateurs in our own backyard. Who can pass that up? The atmosphere is so festive! Everyone is smiling and says Hello. When we go to local shows you know almost everyone, however at finals most of the faces are new. There are SERIOUS Competitors from all over the country, however you make many new friends because everyone shares the same passion and love for the horse. I was stabled next to an adult amateur, Becky from South Carolina and we became such good friends that we plan to meet in Florida this winter. You share each triumph and there is an all for one attitude. I watched Akiko Yamazaki express sheer joy with her ride and Christopher Hickey hug his horse with triumph after the Grand Prix Freestyle. Everyone supports each other and revels in a masterful ride. I have never heard so many have a good ride and how did it go? resonating as you walked through the barn. When you come back sporting a ribbon, congratulations come from all corners of the barn. The competitors across the aisle form North Carolina opened a bottle of champagne to toast my freestyle. From a competitors point of view, the show is superbly run by our familiar Kevin Bradbury and his competent staff. They always resolve problems and the scores are reported instantly. Championship times are drawn the day before the class and sent to each competitor efficiently in a text. The stabling is a lottery-i have had the indoor and outdoor experience. The indoor is warm and more convenient if you have a late ride in the Alltech. The outdoor stabling was colder but the ventilation is much better. There are tarps that block the wind and rain from entering the shed rows and makes the outdoor stabling much warmer. All the stabling is on blacktop so I would recommend renting or bringing mats for the stalls. The outdoor stabling is conveniently located close to the outdoor competition rings where most of the classes are held. Many FEI classes and a few of the freestyles are in the Alltech arena. All the rings both warm up and practice have GGT footing which is kept clean and groomed. There are plenty of little extras that make the competition feel like a championship. Competing in the lavish Alltech arena has a European feel. The Alltech and the outdoor arenas are beautifully decorated with flowers and the banners of the sponsors. All the arenas had big scoreboards with your name in lights. Each rider was announced with their horse and region that they were representing. All award ceremonies were in the Alltech, they were very well orchestrated within lots of pomp and circumstance. Nico announced each winner and everyone had photos taken. Kristy (Fabio s owner) and I participated in the AA Grand Prix and AA Grand Prix Freestyle awards ceremonies. Fabio loves awards ceremonies! Kristy and l hugged through smiles and happy tears. All award winners were invited to a press conference after their ceremonies. We sat on a stage with microphones and a USDF/Adequan background - it felt like a professionally televised sports event. Each championship ride had a panel of three highly regarded and mostly international judges. The rides in the Alltech arena were broadcast on USEF TV. This venue is the USA version of Aachen! Competitors were spoiled with so many gifts from the sponsors and the USDF. The packets came in a sturdy canvass bag with gifts and coupons galore from the sponsors. There are Finals pins which l save and attach to my charm bracelet, a ceramic plaque for your stall, a winter USDF headband and a beautiful program. The food at the competitors party on Friday night during the Grand Prix was delicious with a Kentucky Bourbon flair. Even the bridle numbers are a keepsake as they say Finals on them.

7 US Dressage Finals The Ultimate Experience, continued By Dr. Jeni Gaffney The vendor fair was luxurious. All of your favorite tack brands were well represented. It was a tack lover s paradise, so much beautiful leather! It was so fun to window shop the European show attire very expensive. Bling was definitely in the house, as were more conservative items. There was a great booth that had hand- screened belts and beautiful scarves which were reasonably priced. Another booth had hand made fleece vests, headbands (for people) and dog coats which were really cute. The hand-beaded spur straps, stock ties and pins were pretty nifty. And boots! Boots like you ve never seen! Italian boots with amazing tops, boots on sale, boots in crazy colors, boots covered entirely in sparkles. OK, not my thing but really fun to see. Since the Finals are held in November, it was a great place to do a little early Christmas shopping to find that perfect gift for my dressage buddies. Volunteering makes the experience even more rewarding. It requires so many volunteers to run a show of this size. I volunteered each day at lunch to give those working all day a chance to eat! Picture me with my signature big hat being a horse crossing guard. I was even allowed to wield a STOP sign. I smiled and wished everyone a good ride, it was very fulfilling! My friends, Jan and Sue were warm up stewards. As a volunteer, you also receive a beautiful canvas bag, Finals ball cap and many other goodies from the sponsors. If you volunteer several days, then you can have your hotel room paid. Volunteers receive free meals which were excellent and had a Kentucky theme to make them super fun. Please consider a trip even if you are on a budget-you can get many expenses paid. It is wonderful to see a familiar face as a ring steward, gate keeper, golf cart driver or runner. If you have any volunteer questions please ask our own Lisa Gorretta, she has been a four year volunteer at Finals! The VIP tickets Saturday night during the Grand Prix Freestyles were well worth the price. The seats provided a very comfortable view of the stunning Alltech arena. Drinks, appetizers, dinner and dessert were included. All the food and the service was excellent. The night had a distinctly European championship flair, our Aachen! The Grand Prix freestyles were well crafted and executed, truly an evening of engaging horsemanship. Kentucky is the Mecca for horse enthusiasts. The historic and immaculate farms that surround the horse park are breathtaking. It is fun to take a car ride around to historic Georgetown, spend an evening in downtown Lexington, tour famous stud farms and of course no trip would be complete without a visit to the gargantuan Liquor Barn. The Kentucky Horse Park has an interesting museum, the parade of breeds, famous retired horses in residence, and horseback rides around the park. Dressage enthusiasts can visit the home offices of USDF to view history in the Hall of Fame. Many other organizations and breeds have their offices within the park like United States Pony Club, USEF and USEA. Often, there are multiple disciplines holding events during the dressage Finals like the high school rodeo, reining and a Paso Fino championship. We are so lucky to have a beautiful venue and such a marvelous competition within driving distance. Watching and/or competing at a championship like the Finals really ups your game and sharpens your eye for better quality at all the levels. It isn t just the FEI levels, you can watch your level and your peers to help set reasonable goals at all the levels. I hope that I have convinced every NODA member that takes the time to read this article to put the Finals on their calendar for next year! The Finals were presented by Adequan. Other sponsors included Smartpak, Platinum Performance, Standlee, Merial, Dietrich Equine Insurance, Premier Equestrian Products, Hodges Badge and Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.
