Photo courtesy: Judy Woodruff ( Capturing a moment in time. From Our President... You Make The Difference As some of you may know, it has been a challenging year for the IDHSNA. This included the need to fill the remainder of the President s term a period of one year and two months. After a process that included full board participation in interviewing the candidates, a decision was made October 22, 2007 (see Pages 4-5 for additional reporting of this process). I am honored to have been asked, and ultimately selected, to serve as the board president until the members elect their choice next year. It was wonderful meeting so many of you during the September IDH- SNA national show in Wayne, IL. It s obvious that we have a bevy of talented, knowledgeable and enthusiastic members interested in participating in the effort to move this organization and the Irish Draught/ Sport Horse breed forward. All of you can play a role in how we succeed in our efforts toward future recognition and excellence. The foals we re seeing at Halcyon Acres (nice mares, of course, but, well, it takes two) leave me awestruck by the talent and temperament the Irish Draught brings to performance prospects. We all benefit in making more aware of the special qualities this breed offers. Together, we can make this organization and the horses we ve all grown to hold in such high esteem known, admired and respected. Please consider being part of the solution it s too easy to complain about problems and do nothing. Members can do great things to help forward the IDHSNA. Serve on or suggest a committee to start (first-hand knowledge says we have a recent vacancy on the Grievance Committee with an amazing Chair who could teach anyone a thing or two about communications skills); develop fundraising ideas and initiatives to ensure our new Kentucky Horse Park digs and Member Services Coordinator can propel the IDHSNA and in turn, your passion, to new levels; voice your concerns and ideas for organization and breed success; support Society initiatives and activities in your region and at the Annual Show; become a sponsor or advertiser of Society initiatives to bolster your business recognition and support a good cause; think about how you can truly make a difference. It s amazing how selfless acts tend to have exponential and unanticipated personal returns. Expand on your passion and knowledge by getting involved in the IDHSNA committee and leadership opportunties to ensure we succeed together. Nanette Levin NLevin@HalcyonAcres.com (please include a meaningful subject line as tons of spam comes to this address). Look to our ANNUAL YEARBOOK for our main photo-based celebration of the IDHSNA Annual Show... but find details of show results right here in the Fall Blarney! Member photo contributions can be found scattered amongst articles in this edition... THANK YOU for your contributions!

6 Interim President Named Nominating Committees Search for Nominees The Board of Directors for the IDHSNA appointed John Lyons, Pat Orgas and myself (Michelle Robbins) to serve as this year s nominating committee to find qualified candidates for the position of Vice President, Executive Secretary, and two Directors at Large. Jennifer Stevens was our liaison with the board, answered our questions and provided guidance when we needed it. She also arranged for the three members of the nominating committee to be able to hold conference calls so that we could discuss the potential candidates. Please note that the nominating committee had a little over two weeks to contact as many people as possible and provide them with the information on the positions and what is required of members of the Board of Directors and see if they were interested. We were committed to finding people with the right skill set, knowledge and abilities for each position. Most importantly we understood that the Board of Directors needed folks who had the time to commit. This means folk who would be on line every day checking Board of Director , reachable for individual calls and available for conference calls, and able to conduct research and provide reports on the tasks they were either assigned or volunteered for in a timely manner so that the other members have time to read the report and be able to discuss the items at their Board of Director s meetings. We were looking for people with a professional or corporate background, or project managers, or head nurses, or people who had led teams of people to accomplish tasks, who are natural leaders and who know how to build a consensus. Nominees who understood being held accountable; that if they signed and submitted the nomination acceptance form they knew that if they are asked to do something that the whole society was counting on them to get the job done whether they did it themselves or found someone else to do the task, but they have the responsibility to see it through. After an extensive search with each of us contacting people we knew, people that were passed on to us, or cold calling or ing people off the membership list, we came up with the maximum number of people allowed to be put forward by the nominating committee for each position. In total we personally contacted or attempted to contact over 40 people and asked if they were interested in serving. This was a very interesting and informative process. Often what happened was that we would call and speak to one person and they would suggest that we call and speak to someone else. Many of the people we contacted did not wish to be nominated however they said that they would be willing to serve on a committee. Please note that the nominating committee is not reimbursed for calls so often we tried to contact people off hours to keep our costs down. The following was the nominating committee s slate of nominees which was provided to the Board of Directors on 1 August 2007: Vice President Ann Cummings and Charles Yates Executive Secretary Nanette Levin and Lyn Lindstrom Two Directors at Large Patricia Bewley, Penny Dodge, Shirley Kahlert, and Brianne Sells There have been some changes and some people may no longer be available for the positions we nominated them for. Shirley Kahlert has decided to run for the position of South West Regional Chair and Patricia Bewley has decided to put her name forward as a possible candidate to fill remaining term of North East Regional Chair. Subsequently on 20 September 2007 the nominating committee was contacted by Jennifer Stevens who asked us to assist the Board of Director s with choosing someone to fill the position of President for the remainder of the existing term. The nominating committee decided the best way to reach the membership was to send out an ed letter via the membership Yahoo Group outlining the job description for the position of President, the job description for being a member of the Board of Directors and the specific skills, knowledge and abilities it would take to be successful in this position. On 24 September 2007 the letter was sent out and we started trying to contact the members for whom we did not have addresses by phone. We determined not to send a letter out to those members who did not have since we would have to cover the cost of the mailing. I would love to say that we successfully contacted everyone but we were not 100% successful. We did leave as many voice messages as we could and I can say that I personally had many wonderful conversations with ID and IDHS owners. The Board of Directors let the nominating committee know that they would be contacting and conducting a telephone interview with each candidate and were asking for interview questions. The nominating committee prepared and presented a sample interview questionnaire and matrixes for scoring each candidate and comparing the scores. This allowed the board to numerically rank each candidate s ability on the skills needed and determine in an unbiased fashion who was the best candidate for the job. We originally had three nominees for the President s position Michele Metraux, Doug MacKay and Guy DeCorte. Michele Metraux withdrew her nomination on 9 October during the Board of Director s meeting, Guy DeCorte withdrew his nomination on 14 October, and Doug MacKay withdrew his nomination on 19 October Doug let the board know that he had conferred with Gayle Sheehan and Simone MacKay and they all felt that Doug would be better suited to fill the remainder of Gayle Sheehan s term as Central Regional Chair. The nominating committee felt that the remaining term of the current President s position is a very tough position right now, requiring a minimum of 20 hours a week and a skill set to rival that of most CEOs. Two people from the list of nominees we presented for the general elections approached the board on their own, volunteering to be considered to fill the remainder of the President s term Ann Cummings and Nanette Levin. On 22 October the Board of Directors voted on the position of President after interviewing both Nanette Levin and Ann Cummings. Both candidates presented impressive resumes and relevant past experience. Each offered positive ideas for the future and offered skill sets to help move the IDHSNA forward. Nanette Levin was elected to fill the remaining term as President. So please welcome Nanette and throw your support behind her and the Board of Directors, it is time for us to put 2007 behind us and move forward to bringing the IDHSNA into a new era of solidarity, progress and growth toward our common goals. 7 Pen Portrait, Nanette Levin... From The Editor (con t)... Nanette Levin Pen Portrait Pen Portrait for IDHSNA, Provided July 30, 2007 I broke my leg at age nine (discovered thirty years later after a Thoroughbred incident required X-rays) when launched from the first horse I owned - bought in part with paper-route money. I dug my heels in about parting with him, even after I couldn t play any more Pony Club games and the boarding stable owner refused to let me ride him on her property. The replacement wowed judges, won events, and was sought-after through generations. In fact, I discovered she was still fox hunting when I came back to Connecticut to assume a head-riding-instructor position. The former still brings back fonder memories. There s no accounting for sanity with the horse addiction. Older and hopefully wiser, I m excited about our IDSH foals and the prospect for safer fulfillment. Good fortune let me merge passions and talents into a viable business. Halcyon Acres is a breeding operation on 120-acres where we also start young horses and reprogram problem mounts. Thirty-eight years of riding experience, 23 years of professional equine activities and 18 years running a marketing firm all lend a hand in this venture. Recent horsey activities include the IDHSNA Grievance Committee, a monthly column for the nationally distributed Today s Horse Trader, Thoroughbred racing and galloping at Finger Lakes race track. Selected Business Experience:. Potter Town Council Board of Directors, Rochester SCORE Board of Directors, Rochester NAWBO Marketing co-chair, Les Femmes Chefs D Entreprises Mondiales, Los Angeles Owner, Fulcrum Communications (marketing) 1989-present. Small Business Advisor for SBDC (Canandaigua) ACE Award Nominee, Rochester NAWBO SCORE Chapter #23 Counselor of the Year National Chapter Public Policy Advocate of the Year, NAWBO Appointed Delegate to White House Conference on Small Business Who s Who of American Women From The Editor... As many of you know, I have decided to resign my position of the editor of the Blarney. I have discovered that the time my family, horses, and career demand will no longer allow me the time to devote to the Blarney. I have very much enjoyed my time volunteering for the IDHSNA, and have enjoyed the experience this position has given me. This means we are looking for a new editor. The person considering this position will be expected to be the gathering point for materials, and be responsible for vetting the contributions prior to sending on to Laurie for inclusion. We will need someone with the ability to devote hours a quarter on this, as well as having editorial skills (checking grammar and correct pronunciation are the most necessary skills). If you are interested in volunteering for this position, please contact Laurie Monroe at or blarney@grafxbylaurie.com. I would like to thank the board of the IDHSNA for the opportunity to work on the Blarney staff, and the members for their support. It has been a great experience, and I have learned so much in the process. Laurie has been wonderful to work with, and I wouldn t trade the past year spent working with her for anything. She always has wonderful suggestions on articles and inclusions, and is an incredible asset to the IDHSNA. Thank you again, Megan Gillenwater kegansporthorses@gmail.com From Our Vice President... Our society is made up of a number of different groups: members, directors and volunteers who take on some of the most important (but also sometimes the least visible) tasks. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce these members and offer them the thanks of all members of the society. They are presented in no particular order because they are all FIRST CLASS. 9 WANTED... Volunteer needed for Website Maintenance! It has been about two years since I began serving as one of the volunteers for website maintenance. It has been my pleasure to serve the society in this capacity. I have had fun with this task and I enjoyed helping the new site come into existence and helping to maintain it. I will be resigning from this position as soon as a volunteer is able to start or effective the 31st of December - whichever comes first. There are several things needed to volunteer for this position. First and foremost, you need HIGH SPEED internet service as maintaining the site is almost impossible at dial-up speeds. (I know from experience as I tried during the summer from Wyoming, but could not do so successfully.) In addition, you need to enjoy working on the computer, be comfortable helping members with the site, work with web team Lead (Laurie Monroe), and learn/understand/implement Society policies regarding classified advertising and updating information on the site. You will need to be willing to search out information for the News/home-page and the calendar from other sources such as the member s onelist and other members. There will be a board liaison to communicate needs between the website team and the board. Time requirements can range from minutes a day (to check for photos that need to be released) to rather extensive hours depending on the time of year and tasks being completed. The Membership Services Coordinator will provide the information you will need to maintain the user accounts, the horse database, and the sale horse pages on a regular basis. If you are interested in getting more information, I will be happy to discuss this position with you. Please e- mail me at: kr-idhsna@crosscheckranch.com or phone me at (I am easiest to reach weekdays between 9:30 & 3:00 central time.) The society has not previously & cannot now afford to pay someone to perform the tasks necessary to provide and maintain the dynamic features on the website such as the sales pages, adding horses to the pedigree database, and the member s login area. Continuing to offer these popular maintenance intensive features is dependent on donated time and effort from volunteers. Kerianne Robertson Website Tasks (include but are not limited to): 1. Maintain user profiles as follows a. Add new members (administrator only) i. Name, farm name, address, phone, , web link, etc. ii. Set starting password and give to Membership officer to send to new member in their packet. iii. Set client classification so they have member privileges iv. Assign any horses officially recorded as theirs to their account by going onto each horse s record and setting them as owner. b. Select/remove features such as breeder or owner for a member (admin. Only) c. Remove horses assigned to the account if requested by user. (admin Only) d. Enter corrected information for members when asked or talk them through login and entry of their corrections themselves. e. Annually, on the date unpaid members drop from society roles, go through and turn off the client flag on all expired members. Change the password so they can not access the account. f. Restore client rights when an expired member renews. Communicate the new password to the member. 2. Maintain horse profiles a. Add new registered horse. This involves adding EACH horse on the pedigree for 3 generations. i. Fill in registration number and other details. ii. Set owner/breeder IF they are a member. May require going to the user screen and setting the user to have the owner/breeder/agent options. iii. ID/RID - will usually have both parents to link to, relatively easy to link sire and dam. See iv. below for what s needed if sire and/or dam is not in database already. iv. IDSH - will usually have one parent who is RID/RIDSH. Other parent is usually new and requires adding 7 ancestors to complete the pedigree fully. v. Link each ancestor if ancestors had to be added by calling up the horse and setting its sire/dam vi. IF horse is a stallion for our roster or also for sale, select classification. vii. IF horse is owned by a member; go to user maintenance and link horse to owner. b. Add unregistered horse for member to list for sale i. Confirm owner is a member, horse meets requirements to be advertised (read disclaimer on the web page). Create horse with tilde(~) at front of name so sort to bottom of sales pages ii. Set basic information. Do not set breed as its not yet registered. Put that information in description. iii. Do NOT create any ancestors for these unregistered horses, rather link to sire/dam only if the sire/dam is already on the database. Type sire and dam information into the sales description. iv. Visit user maintenance to set agent/owner flag if necessary. Confirm that sales description has contact info if different than owner. v. Important submit horse THEN go call up horse from horse maintenance screen and select the correct sales classification. THIS STEP is what makes a horse show up on the webpage. vi. Since horse is owned by a member; go to user maintenance and link horse to owner. vii. Release any photos submitted for horse. c. Acquire and submit photos for stallions for the roster pages and lineage photos. d. Record changes to any horse s status received by the Registration Office. For instance gelding or corrections to any details. e. Record changes to breed for all horses that pass inspection once that list is published. f. Record all transfers of ownership. Link horse to new owner if new owner is a member, otherwise remove owner from the horse so it is not linked to the old owner. 3. Information required from registration office for horse maintenance: a. Registered name, reg#, DOB, studbook, color, 3 generation pedigree, owner. b. Owner s status as to membership and information if a member. c. All transfers including new owner s name and if they are a member. (If a member they must be on the db or added to it if not there already. d. All gelding notices. e. All corrections to papers where website information is involved. 4. Information required from membership office for user maintenance a. Name, farm name, address, phone, , web link, etc. b. List of expired memberships on the annual drop date c. Notice of each renewal of an expired member. Other website maintenance functions: 1. Maintain the NEWS - which shows on our home page 2. Maintain Calendar of Events for ID related events that we know about 3. Upload all revised forms on the website 4. Maintain any special galleries - like for the stallion auction. 5. Acquire and submit photos for any of the above items. Blarney Fall 07 Edition Page 7

11 Looking Back... Looking Forward... This is the last Blarney to come out before the end of my term as a Director at Large of the IDHSNA. I wish to say thank you to the many friends and supporters of the wonderful Irish Draught - the reason all of us are part of this Society. Members of the 2007 board had any number of items for action in 2007 including but not limited to review of the Stallion Auction, review of the bylaws, 501(c3) research, review of purebred registration regulations, marketing, etc. However, the financial/former Treasurer situation required the board to focus on core issues including: determination of the extent of the irregularities and recovery of funds necessary to enable the society to continue operating; decisions regarding the legal process concerning the former treasurer (on-going); obtaining inspectors for the IDHSNA enabling inspection and approval of horses into to the RID/RIDSH studbooks in 2007; and continuing the maintenance of the Studbooks which included completing the opening and staffing of the KHP Office as all contracts were signed & all studbooks, documentation and records were physically in KY. It has been a most stressful year. Should anyone doubt just how difficult, they need only look to the coming elections. With 6 positions up for election this year, only one current board member is running for re-election. In addition, there will be a new NE Region Chair and a new President filling out those terms. This means the 2008 board will have a minimum of 7 new board members. Your support and volunteer time and effort will be important to the success of the 2008 board. Your communication with those members, once they are on the board will be important. Include them in your conversations; do not shut them out of your discussions because they are 'board members'. Accept that they cannot 'chat' on the onelist as they did before. Why? Because anything a 'board member' says is assumed to be a 'board' position. That is not fair, but that IS the reality of the situation. I have not been allowed a "personal opinion" since elected. I quickly learned I could only post when I could provide facts, otherwise my comments were harmful to the breed and fellow board members because they were assumed to reflect Board position when in fact they did not. The new board members will not read minds any better than the old board members did - stay in contact them. Do not feel ignored because your good idea did not spring to life as soon as you suggested it to a board member. Someone has to make it happen, if you cannot provide the volunteer effort to make it possible, be patient, keep putting the idea out there and when there is breathing room or the right volunteer picks it up - it can emerge. Respect that a person's duties as a board member to the Society are not the ONLY thing they have to do in their life. Being a board member should NOT be a 24/7 proposition, nor should you expect instant answers. 13 volunteers cannot be expected to coordinate their schedules to meet daily or weekly, and the board member you contact cannot presume to speak for the board and answer without their collective input. Accept that you will not always agree with decisions made by the board. It usually takes a great deal of time and effort for as many as 13 board members to reach a consensus. Almost no decision made is immediate and with total agreement. Discussion of different views and ideas precedes the board coming to a consensus or majority decision. Recognize that hind-sight is a poor method for judging actions taken with due diligence and in good faith based on information available at the time. Many members have spoken of a desire for change. The 2008 board will represent a significant opportunity for new energy and ideas as a majority of the board will be first time members of the IDHSNA Board. They will have to maintain the core function of the Society, the studbooks, registrations and inspections, as a priority. They will have to continue to deal with the legal actions and financial realities relating to the former treasurer as this will continue to affect the operation of the Society for some time to come. In addition to the board related tasks that will be transferred to new board members, there are a number of other operational tasks that are performed by persons who are completing their terms. It is unrealistic to expect the new board to have time to explore new ideas if they find themselves personally filling all these roles. Two examples of tasks that require significant time and effort include maintenance of the website database and the Blarney Editor position (see positions and descriptions posted in this Blarney). My best wishes for a great year in 2008, and a growing and glowing future for the IDHSNA, its members and especially our wonderful Irish Draught horses. 12 Member News... My Little Cart Horse That Could by Jim McGinty for Debbie Fullilove & Braveheart, RID It was Saturday night Oct. 6th. I got a call from Debbie Fullilove asking me if I was going to see Eamon (my 2yr. old colt) on Sunday. She said her Area 5 group was holding a 1 Day Event in Bellville, TX (a town I had to pass through on my way) and that she had a 9:06 am starting time for dressage, and the cross country was to be after the lunch break. She said that she would be the only RID among 100 horses - 40 in her group and the rest Pony Club members. Well I arrived about 8:45 am and Debbie was already warming-up so we had no time to talk. After she finished her dressage test, we were walking back to her trailer to get Braveheart out of the sun until his 11:20 am Stadium Jumping time. During the walk Debbie said she didn t know what happened; He was great in the warm-up, but seemed to fall asleep when the test started. When the scores were posted Debbie was in 3rd - 2 points out of first. The second place horse was only 1/2 point out. In the Stadium Jumping phase, the first place rider and Debbie went clean. The second place rider dropped a rail for 4 faults and Debbie was now in second place. At 1:40 pm the Cross Country started and Debbie was the 39th horse on the course getting started at 2:15 pm. Well Debbie went clean. As we were walking out of the Finish Box, Debbie was excited and asked if I could see the back of the course. I said No, she then said Braveheart wanted to run. She said I think he was trying to make-up for falling asleep at dressage, because he was really flying down the back part of the course. I pulled him back and he slowed, so I knew he was listening to me but he just wanted to run. So I gave him his head and let him set his own speed. As we passed the starter s table, Debbie was told she went clean, but was given 10 points for speed fault. Debbie looked at me and said Damn I may have to give this up. I don t think Bravey can go any faster. Debbie and Braveheart Photo Judy Woodruff / ( abusing your horse. If the lady from PETA wanted an apology, she would have to wait, because it would be several hours before that big smile left Debbie s face. We then went into Bellville for lunch and like many small Texas towns on Sunday the only sit-down restaurant closed at 3:00 pm. So, no lunch. We did go across the street to a Dairy Queen for ice cream. As we sat there I said to Debbie, Who knows by dinner time tonight you could be on PETA s - 10 MOST WANTED - list. Debbie looked up from her Hot Fudge Sundae and said, Yeah, but over 100 new people now know, MY little CART HORSE can Run. Just a Sunday outing in Texas... Jim McGinty Note: Some comedic license was taken in the telling of this story. Anyone who knows Debbie knows she would give-up her life before she let any harm befall Braveheart. Author s note: The point of this story is not the finish placement. What I saw that day was a Lady s realization that what she had was as good as others told her. We all have our doubts, about what we own. We love them so much we believe them to be good, but sometimes aren t sure. When we arrived in Chicago for the National Show, it was late on a Tuesday night and as we put up Braveheart, Debbie said, With all the big Stallions that are going to be here, I hope the judges don t think I brought My little cart horse by mistake. Well the Irish judges liked her horse - Reserve Champion *Stallion Class* 2007 Annual Show. She now believed in his Jumping ability - Clean in Stadium jumping and Cross Country. Now in a grassy field in Bellville, TX 65 miles NW of Houston and a long way from Chicago. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place. Heart... I think Debbie realized that she had a horse capable of, and willing to give her, more than she would EVER demand of him. For Debbie it can t get much better that that! On the way toward the trailer, I suggested we have a beer, Debbie said I didn t bring any and they don t sell it at the concession stand. So, I drove into town to get beer and Debbie said she would wait at the scoreboard for the final standings... After I returned we found out that the 10-point time fault dropped Debbie into fifth Place. Braveheart was not too slow, the 10 points were for finishing 26 seconds faster then the Allowed optimal course time. As we sat there cooling down, I jokingly said to Debbie. 13 Member News (con t)... Galanta (a.k.a. Louie), a 9 year old Irish Sport Horse by Ballinvella (XX) out of Lissacreasig Star (RID), ridden by Oryla Ramey, won the 4th Level AA California Dressage Society (CDS) Horse of the Year Class at the CDS Championships held at Woodside Horse Park, California, October 11 14, The California Dressage Society annual championship arguably offers some of the toughest competition at any US GMO Championship. To qualify for the CDS championships, horses must earn five high scores, from four different judges, at four different shows. The championship class was conducted over two days; on the first day horses complete 4th level test 2, followed by 4th level test 3 on the second day. The rides were judged by 4 of the top judges from the US and UK. Horses in the class included 5 of the top 20 ranked Adult Amateur 4th level horses in the US. Photo courtesy: Sheri Scott Photography, sheriscottphotography.com Of their win, Oryla had this to say... I was so excited! I am lucky to have such a great horse to ride. And Galanta s reward? He is happily taking a two week vacation where his activities are limited to being groomed, fed all the carrots and apples he can stuff in, grazed, lunged and turned out. This was my very first inspection, on September 15, 2007, and I had been very nervous and had gotten little sleep the night before. I stopped on the way to Alhambra Stables to pick up my friend and coach, Dallas Grubenmann, who was slated to assist and take pictures for me. On a humorous note, Dallas was due to have her baby on 9/24, so we were hoping the additional stress of the inspection would not produce an unintended consequence! The inspectors, John Joyce and Michael Ryan, were both quite worried about a woman in her condition working around the stallion, evidently they did not know she was my assistant. I admit it seemed forever before they finished their careful determinations! Both inspectors were very nice and kind, and we were able to visit with them after they declared Jim an Approved RID stallion. They chatted with us about horses and foxhunting, and mentioned that John Joyce had a 71st birthday coming up in the next week. Both claimed to be amazed that Dallas and I were so young, having three children each - what dear gentlemen. (PS: Dallas had her baby Sept. 28 at 11:00am... a baby girl named Zoey.) Kate s report: Our inspection site on September 16 was Poppy Lane Farm in Abbotsford, BC, a lovely and spotlessly maintained facility. Owner Bonnie McManus treated Ollie like royalty, and likewise his entourage. The indoor arena was nicely lit and wonderful for the free jumping, with viewing area for spectators. Staying very busy (braiding a wiggly inquisitive huge three year old stud colt, in a strange barn full of interesting strange horses, with a hard deadline and wanting desperately for him to look his very best!) helped my nerves a lot. Once that was done and he was brushed and shined to the nth degree, hooded and sheeted and ready to rock-n-roll... THEN my stomach began doing an airshow. (Hubby Rick acted calm throughout the whole process!) Thank God, I was only 20 minutes away from the actual inspection s beginning and had only to put on my clean clothes, find the paperwork, and hotfoot it back to the barn, to then wait through inspection of a pair of lovely Clover Cliste IDSH geldings who were both were impeccably turned out and braided beautifully (both passed)... then, finally our turn came. 16 Member News (con t)... On The International Scene... Continued from Page 11 handler Patrick show his paces and stand him up again, then removed the reins and sent him out to show his stuff over the crossrails. Rick and I were hiding in the alcove where the jump rails were stored, with Nikko Konyk and her farrier, to watch the proceedings. Ollie would thunder around the perimeter and gaily fly over the jump, then focus on us and aim right for our hiding place! We would shoo him on for another pass. (Go Ollie, go!) At one point, one of the inspectors (I believe it was Mr. Ryan) put the poles up yet another notch, and was slow getting back - I feared that Ollie would jump right over him, or stop. But, no, he barely gave the man a look as he soared past his head - we were very proud of him then. Finally they said they d seen enough, and went back to their clipboards to confer. I thought I d die when they walked toward us with solemn faces... Bottom line, I only cried a little bit when they declared Ollie to have passed...with flying colors! We gathered in the stall row to chat and tell stories. I was very surprised to find that the inspectors knew little about the horse - only his age, gender and that he was a purebred! I had to recite his lineage for them, so they knew where he came from. Please welcome Manu Forti s Touch Down RID to the ranks of approved RID stallions. Region Report s (con t)... Ed is a 14 year old ISH gelding by Parkmore Night ISH out of Bodalmore Lass ISH. The gelding has been ridden mostly by his owner, Phillip Adkins (an American), at lower levels, but has been back with William since June to move up to the **** level. William and Ed started the weekend with a dressage test that put them in 3rd with a 41.4%. Although this was Ed s first ****, he and William rocked around the XC course to finish just one second over the allowed time, and with no jumping faults, to move into 2nd place. Less then a rail separated him from the leaders, Andrew Nicholson and Lord Killinghurst, going into Sundays Show Jumping round. William and Ed had a rail at fence 13, to add 4 faults to their score. Fence 13 turned out to be quite spooky, and few left the rails of it up that day. When Andrew and Lord Killinghurst took two rails, William and Ed moved up to take top honors for the weekend. When asked how he felt about the win, William responded that he was surprised. He seemed to expect a similar result from his long time partner Ballincoola (who ended up 5th), but not from Ed, who was just out to get experience at the **** level. Thankfully, William gave props to Ed s Irish Draught heritage, saying He s got some Irish Draught blood and a fantastic brain. He s sneaked ahead in the rankings in my stable. Now, some Irish Draught blood is an incomplete statement. Parkmore Night ISH is by Carnival Night (TB) and out of an RID mare named Parkmore Jewel who is by Atlantic Boy and out of a Laughton mare. Bodalmore Lass is a by the RID stallion Diamonds are Trumps. Parkmore ED is a full 50% Irish Draught. IDHSNA members should note the North American connection to Parkmore Ed-Parkmore Jewel RID is the dam of the RID stallion Parkmore Pride. With this win, William, Ed, and Phillip are now looking at the very real possibility of qualifying as a team for the Olympics in They will continue to compete with that goal in mind. 17 Point of View: USEA Young Event Horse Series... USEA/Spaulding Labs Young Event Horse Series Highly Recommended! Submitted by Nancy Roche and her Irish Draught Sporthorse, The North Wind by Brandenburg s Windstar (IDSH) out of Charm of the North (TB) I would like to share with you my experiences at the Rebecca Farm YEH competition, so that you can get an idea of what you may encounter at a YEH test. Although your experiences may vary in ways, I hope it will encourage you to take your youngster to these competitions. In my opinion the YEH test is the most complete test of a youngsters potential to be an event horse, ultimately more so then the Future Event Horse test, as they judge jumping and galloping ability very important aspects of eventing! I had heard about the YEH series last year, when a Horse Trials close to home was offering the test. Breezer was 4 years old at the time. Because Breezer was green, I didn t know exactly what to expect and the fences were said to be at 3 and higher (higher than my plans to jump him at 4 years old) I declined my local opportunity to compete him in the 4 year old YEH test. I wish I knew then what I know now... Everything went without a hitch until 30 feet out from the last fence (a recently dyed oh so blue water pass through). It was there that Breezer put on the brakes! I inched him forward and he backed up, three times! Was I eliminated? Well, I was going to get him through that water no matter what, so I just stayed on task and I figured they d be giving me the big E soon, but it never came. I got Breezer in and through the water shortly thereafter and galloped through the finish in a faster than normal semi-controlled gallop. I was just thankful that they let me school him through the water, so if we were eliminated because of his stops I was OK with that. We had one hour until the conformation section of the test. Once again I had no clue what to expect. When the time came to judge Breezer they walked around him and made their marks as I stood him up, then I jogged him away from them and back to them in a straight line. They were very helpful in getting us to stand the horses the way they wanted to see them stood up, etc, so that if you were a novice (like me!) I don t think you d necessarily be at a disadvantage. Also, some people were in riding clothes and some were in jog up clothes it didn t seem to matter. It was very interesting and fun! With Breezer turning 5 this year I started looking into doing the 5 year old YEH competition at Rebecca Farm. A friend of mine had done three of them two years ago and went to the championships as well, so I picked her brain, only to find that the tests were all run differently from one another and at the time the scoring hadn t been developed as completely, so she found it to be VERY subjective, etc. What had I gotten myself into? At the time of my departure to Rebecca Farm I STILL didn t quite know the answer to that question, but I figured my horse is only 5 years old once and I was going to chalk it up to experience and enjoy it! I had the dressage test memorized, I brought some simple jog up clothes for the conformation part of the test and it was going to be an adventure... On to the day of the show! First was the dressage test, ridden like any dressage test, but 2 minutes before I went in I was told I couldn t ride the test with a dressage whip. Oops! Oh well, easy fix there. The test is a short test which for the 5 year olds included a little lengthening across the diagonal no lengthen for the 4 year olds. We had literally 20 minutes to un-tack, tack up and warm up for the jumping test! It was tight, but it was kind of fun to have everything move along without a lot of down time. The jumping course was held on part of the XC course with a combination of XC fences and stadium fences and a water pass-through. We were told that if the horse stopped 3 times at a fence that we should just proceed to the next obstacle. The XC fences were simple straight-forward novice logs and one small cabin fence, so a horse that could handle a Novice test could handle the level of fences presented. The last part of the course to the finish line we were told to gallop. Gallop? What do they mean by that exactly? As fast as I can? At Novice speed with uphill balance? I didn t know, so I decided to do something in the middle of those two thoughts. Nancy Roche riding The North Wind, RIDSH, at the Rebecca Farm Young Event Horse competition. Photo courtesy Naismith Photography ( As I waited to hear the final results I already felt like a winner, even though I presumed I was eliminated at the water. I just felt lucky to have a nice horse such as Breezer. Imagine my surprise when they announced him as the winner!! They believed in his potential as much as I did. What a rewarding feeling!! It wasn t until after I got my score sheets back that I also realized the huge value in the comments given. It s not often you get official USEA judge s opinions about the quality of your horse s gallop, jumping ability, body type, etc. I know in the past that I have spent YEARS working to get a horse to upper levels, only to find they weren t cut out for the job to begin with!! Getting your horse evaluated like this can save you a ton of time, money and possible heartache. It s a good feeling to know that my horse is cut out to potentially do the job, according to people that judge event horses all the time. Now I can Blarney Fall 07 Edition Page 15

18 Point of View: USEA Young Event Horse Series... move forward knowing it just comes down to our progressive training and his desire to do the job at hand. As riders we are used to getting marked down for transitions being late or our horses refusing a fence that type of thing. Isn t it refreshing to have the judge just be there to rate your horses talent and potential? Your horse does not have to be going perfectly to be shown in a YEH test. The pressure is off folks, so do the test and let them evaluate your horse!! Here is how it is judged: Section 1-CONFORMATION (each scored on 1-10 scale): Type: Proportional, Elegant. Frame: Proportion, Head, Neck, Shoulders, Withers, Back, Croup, Haunches, Topline. Legs: Straightness, Angulation & formulation of legs & joints. Feet: Size, Shape, Condition. Jog: Rhythm, Straightness and correctness. General Impression: Biomechanical efficiency to move well and stay sound to compete at the highest level. Section 2-DRESSAGE (each scored on 0-10 scale, decimals allowed): Trot: Rhythm, Suppleness, Elasticity, Impulsion, Swinging back, Ground cover. Walk: Rhythm, Relaxation, Activity, Ground cover. Canter: Rhythm, Suppleness, Elasticity, Impulsion, Natural balance, Ground cover, Uphill tendency. Submissiveness: Suppleness, Contact, Straightness, Obedience. General Impression: potential as a 4* event horse After they judge it all they do their mathematical magic according to what gets what percentage of the score, etc and the horse with the highest score wins! I highly recommend the experience to every breeder or owner of a young event horse. You will get a clearer picture of what you need to work on with your youngster, which will help you tailor your training accordingly. If you are a breeder you can alter some of your breeding program to strengthen a weakness they might have commented on, and you can confirm what we already know- that the Irish Draught/Irish Draught Sporthorse is the best horse for eventing!!! Kudos also to the NW region of IDHSNA for their big vision in promoting the Irish Draught to the eventing community. Having the only breed booth at Rebecca Farm s trade show positioned us as THE breed for eventing, plus giving awards for the highest placed ID/IDSH not only encouraged ID/IDSH owners to compete there, but also brought attention to the breed s excellence in the sport (Of course it also brought home that point when Ballinakill Glory won the 3* competition this year - congrats to them!!!). I invite you all to be a part of the Young Event Horse Series, or help sponsor an Irish Draught award at Rebecca Farm and/or other events. Let s declare the Irish Draught to be the horse of choice for eventing!! NOTES ON JUDGE S SCORESHEET*: Young horse should not be penalized for such things as squealing and shying. The purpose of the test is not to judge accuracy but to assess the potential of the horse for success at the highest level of the sport. The quality of riding should not impact the horses score. Wherever possible a standard 20X60 arena should be used. Horses may be warmed up inside the dressage arena and may exit to start the test, or start from inside the arena. Section3-JUMPING (each scored on 1-10 scale): Style: Technique, Bascule, Use of front and hind end (quick, tight), Carefulness, Use of neck/back, Balance in approach and landing. Jumping Ability: Scope, Power, Effort, Coordination. Learning Ability: Intelligence, Rideability, Willingness, Response to aids. (How a horse handles a mistake is an indication of aptitude for training.) General Impression: potential as a 4* event horse. Section 4-Suitability & Potential (Gallop): Ease of gallop, Ground cover, Uphill balance and lightness, Desire to go forward. Blarney Fall 07 Edition Page 16

19 AGM Minutes... The 2007 IDHSNA Annual General Meeting was held at Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, IL on September 7, Board members present were the following: Elizabeth Sells, Secretary, Sue Rowdon, Treasurer/SER Chairman, Ann Cummings, Director At Large, Liz McFarland, NWR Chairman, and Judie Framan, SWR Chairman. 41 members and 8 guests were in attendance. IDHSNA attorney, RL Adams was also in attendance. AGM packets with the agenda and reports were available. I. Call to order. The meeting was called to order. Present Board members, RL Adams and Member Services Coordinator, Laura Reed, were introduced. II Minutes. The approved 2006 minutes were presented in the AGM packet. III. Board Report. The following report was read by Elizabeth Sells for Michele Metraux, IDHSNA Vice-President: The year of 2007 has been interesting. To describe it might be, to paraphrase Charles Dickens: It has been the best of times; it has been the worst of times. Early in 2007, the Board of Directors was contacted by an attorney representing our former Treasurer. We were informed that an examination of the Society s financial records would reveal some irregularities and that the former treasurer intended to do the right thing and make the Society whole. The Board took immediate action to secure the Society s financial situation, to determine the extent of irregularities, and to notify members of the situation. This afternoon, Mr. R.L Adams, who represents the IDHSNA membership, has generously agreed to attend our meeting and provide an update on the current status of the situation with the former treasurer. He will answer as best he can members questions about this situation which is still ongoing. Mr.Adams practices equine law and is a civil and criminal litigator. He has been extremely helpful in assisting our new Treasurer in reorganizing our financial picture and tighten up our financial accountability. As difficult as these last nine months have been, they only represent the worst of times. Let s move on to the best of times. The growth of our Society in both human and equine population has been tremendous. The Year End Awards and USDF All Breeds Awards continue to attract more participants than ever before. In view of the membership growth, the Board of Directors realized that the time had come to move the membership and registration services from our hard-working volunteers to a paid employee, and from volunteers homes to an office. We were fortunate to find an office to sub-lease at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Even more fortunately, we were able to find Laura Reed, whom we hired to be our Member Services Coordinator. The dream of an IDHSNA central office was realized, and the Grand Opening was held on April 27, For those of you who have not met Laura, hopefully over this weekend you will make acquaintance with her. The IDHSNA board members are looking forward to attending tonight s Conservancy Roundtable with many of you. We will learn together about the new international conservancy and how this organization hopes to provide a valuable liaison and meeting-point to other societies and groups whose goal is to preserve the Irish Draught horse. On behalf of the entire Board of Directors and the membership, I would like to extend thanks to the Show Committee (Judie Framan, Liz Freeman, and Susan Jensen) and their volunteers. They have all worked so hard to make this Twelfth Annual Show and Inspection of the IDHSNA a reality. Have a most enjoyable weekend... enjoying our horses and wonderful company! Michèle Métraux Vice-President, IDHSNA IDHSNA Attorney RL Adams was introduced. He gave a brief summary on the current legal affairs of the society including the situations with the former Treasurer and the vote to remove Gina Kirby as President. He then took questions from the floor. IV. Treasurer s Report Sue Rowdon gave a treasurer s report including a copy of the Statement of Financial Condition from the recently completed 2006 Audit. She described several procedures that she had performed under the guidance of a CPA in order to prepare the Society s books for a Trial Balance Audit. She also said that changes in financial procedures were being made however, great consideration was being given to defining the processes in order to avoid making knee jerk decisions that might not be in the best interests of the Society in the long run. Both Sue and RL Adams were available after the meeting. to answer any questions on the situation with the former Treasurer. Liz McFarland presented Sue Rowdon with a gift of appreciation for all her hard work helping straighten out the IDHSNA Treasurer s office. V. Region Reports The following reports were available in the AGM packets. i. NER- No report submitted. ii. SER The SE Region is again having an active year. In April we recognized the top IDSH finishers at Rolex with ribbons and a gift. In May, KY Dressage Association s Breeders Classic II featured an IBC for Irish Draughts. Sponsored by the SER, the class was won by Parkmore Pride, RID, with Benmar Bella Blue taking second followed by Buddy Satterly, an ID sport horse, in third. They also competed successfully in the open classes at this show bringing home a combined total of 10 ribbons. Way to go Fleur Bryan, Debbie and Paul Feemster! The first weekend in June, Larry and Michelle Robbins took two colts to the Waredaca Horse Trials for the USEA Future Event Horse competition. Once again their boys proved very competitive as Kilronan s Image took second and Kilronan s Glenstone a close third. Kilronan s Image was also crowned Champion Yearling Colt. Thank you Michelle and Larry for putting Irish Draughts out in the forefront of this new and exciting event. The next week, came the prestigious Upperville Colt and Horse Show, a highlight of the competition year in the Southeast Region.. John Butler came over from Co. Kilkenny, Ireland to judge the show for us and, for the first time, judge the Connemara division. Blarney Fall 07 Edition Page 17

20 AGM Minutes (con t)... We again started with a clinic at Aynsley Musgrave s Deerfield Stables, joined by members from the American Connemara Society. Linda Cowasjee, Gilliam Pemberton, Michelle Robbins, and Brianne Sells, brought horses and the attendees were asked to judge each horse on its conformation. John then explained how he would have judged the horse, followed by a discussion period. He finished with a short session on techniques for showing a horse in hand. Even though the thermometer was rising close to 100 degrees, the beautiful indoor at Deerfield kept us from melting. A huge THANK YOU to Aynsley, Brianne, Gillian, Linda, and Michelle for making this such an entertaining and educational day. The Irish Draught division at Upperville brought pure and part bred Irish Draughts to compete under the ancient oak trees. This year was bigger and better than ever. It was wonderful to see many familiar faces and to welcome so many new participants. Thank you to member Ray Allen for his pictures which can be seen on the Society web site Purebred champion was the yearling colt, Kilronan s Glenstone owned by Michelle and Larry Robbins, Clanned Eclipse owned by Rachael Cox was reserve champion purebred. Another young horse, Winfield Super Cruiser, owned by Rachael Cox, was 2007 Part bred champion followed by A. Kent Allen s O Riley as reserve champion. The Irish Hunter classes were again a crowd favorite, attracting a lot of attention from spectators. Thank you to Juliette Graham who did a great job as riding judge in these classes. In September, the SER will be well represented at the IDHSNA Annual Show. Many of our members are traveling to Chicago to join in the fun. September 14, you can find another Irish Draught IBC at the Twin Shows DSHB Show at Rose Mount,in Spotsylvania, VA. Our region has been blessed by active Irish Draught enthusiasts who get their horse out into public view. I encourage everyone to join the SER group list (IDHSNA_SER@yahoogroups.com), post activities on the list calendar, and spread the word about opportunities to educate others about the Irish Draught and the IDHSNA. My goal is to identify opportunities in every area of our region to showcase our horses and make our organization known. Let s get the word out to each other as well as the general public about these versatile horses and the proud owners and breeders who love them! SOUTHEAST ROCKS! iii. CR Welcome old and new friends of the Society. The Central Region is proud to host the 2007 Annual Irish Draught Breed Show and Inspections at this beautiful mid-west facility. Hosting this show is a first for the Central Region and a special thanks must be extended to Susan Jensen, Liz Freeman and Judie Framan for their commitment to its success, the long hours they have given to make this all come together providing this opportunity to showcase our members hard work and allow the public an opportunity to view these beautiful creatures we all love. And let s not forget the many volunteers, the vendors, and the spouses who also share in making our show a success. To one and all many thanks. We are very pleased that each of you has taken the time to attend the Annual General Meeting and hope that one or more of you are ultimately inspired to join the ranks of the Society s leadership in support of our great breed, the Irish Draught Horse. It is only through the combined hard work of individuals and the Society that we can assure the continued recovery of the Irish Draught gene pool and its important contribution to the greater horse world. The Central Region has been busy once again over the past year. Many fine horses have been making a name for themselves and the breed in a variety of forums. Sadly, however, North America has bid farewell to one of its long time residents Mountain Pearl. Pearl has returned to greener pastures in his native land of Ireland where he now stands. Many thanks to Diane Petrie and Pat Jensen who shared this fine stallion with us for so many years. We wish him well. We continue to put many fine foals on the ground and we now know that some of the finest Irish Draught stock in the world are bred, born and raised, right here in the United States of America! What an achievement by the Society and its many fine members. We encourage all our members to keep the Region informed of their achievements, new arrivals, and tips on succeeding and feeding the passion we share for our equine friends. May the luck of the Irish be with you! Central Chair Simone Mackay iv. SCR The South Central Region has again enjoyed a growth spurt of sorts over the last year with the addition of several new horses to the region and continues to achieve success with owners and riders competing in venues across the area, around the country, and over seas as well. We are still the smallest region but as the year end awards program winds to a close, the SCR has its share of members listed in the point leader standings in several categories. Congratulations and thank you to those who continue to compete and expand the Irish Draught Horse brand to the equine world. It is you, the hard working, diligent competitors & owners who deserve the credit for introducing this great breed of horse to the public at large, one ribbon at a time. Thank you for your continued support of the IDHSNA. James B. Lamb South Central Chairman, IDHSNA v. NWR Congratulations to all of the participants in this year s Annual Show and thank you to the Show Committee for your time, effort and energy! The NW Region in 2007, has not seen a large increase in membership but has seen an increase in Irish Draught horses with a handful of RID mare and one stallion (O Leary s Irish Diamond) moving to the region. In IDSH, we continue to see numbers increase with many young horses now moving into training. The diversity of ID bloodlines in the NW continues to grow and we are thrilled with this year s influx of purebred mares. A long awaited Regional meeting scheduled in Seattle in February was unfortunately cancelled due to weather conditions. Blarney Fall 07 Edition Page 18

21 AGM Minutes (con t)... Our large geographic area continues to be a challenge for meeting as a group. However, a month later, many members in Washington and western British Columbia met up in Langley B.C. for the Irish Extravaganza which for the second year in a row was a huge success. The NW Region also continued our presence at the Event at Rebecca Farm in late July with an award going to the top Irish Draught horse who was also the winner of the event! Many members continue to be active in the NW dressage and eventing circuit with both purebreds and IDSH. Although an Inspection was not held in the NW Region in 2007, members are counting heads and tails to bring an inspection to the area in Participation by NW members at the national level continues to be outstanding with Kate Triplett participating with the Stallion Auction Committee, Lyn Lindstrom seamlessly transferring Membership to KHP, Lucy Stevenson updating Inspection protocols, Chris Neher chairing the Grievance Committee and Ann Cummings keeping busy as Director at Large. We look forward to continued growth in 2008! vi. SWR Growth: The revitalized Southwest Region continues to make great strides thanks to the dedication of its members. The region boasts a total of 55 members and a growth of 48% since Activities: The region had the largest roster of horses inspected at the annual inspection tour. In February of 2007, the IDHNSA was represented at the Equine Affaire in Pomona California. Many of the members in Southern California participated, and helped educate the public about our breed. In May, New Mexico members participated in the New Mexico Horse Council s annual horse fair. It was the first time ever that the Irish Draught breed has been represented at this event. Southwest Regional members traveled to and were volunteers to the Annual show this year held at Lamplight Equestrian Center. Congratulations and thanks to our Southwest members who have been attending horse shows and three day event competitions, showcasing both the pure bred and part bred sport horses. VI. Registration and Membership Reports OVERVIEW: The IDHSNA Office opened mid-april at the KY Horse Park. Laura Reed was hired as part-time Registration Services Representative. Lucy Stevenson transitioned RO duties to Laura during the week of Rolex, training on procedures, rules and administration of the Breeder s Assistant Data Base. In mid May, Membership functions were transferred from Lyn Lindstom to Laura. The membership processing is still in a bit of transition, as some member applications and fees were continued to be received by Lyn, and then forwarded on to Laura. For the 2008 membership year, all renewals and new memberships will originate and return to the IDHSNA office at the KY Horse Park. This will ensure a timely and accurate administration of memberships. MEMBERSHIP STATUS: Total members for the 2007 year as of September 1 is approximately 380. This number includes: Voting single members Voting Family members Non-Voting single members Non-Voting family members Business members Honorary members The total number of eligible VOTES for 2007 as of September 1 is 352. RESISTRATION STATUS: Total number of Registered Irish Draught and Irish Draught Sport horses as of September 3 is approximately Of this total, 65 registrations were processed through the new Registration Services office in Kentucky from may 1- September 3. There are approximately 20 outstanding registrations due to be processed in the next two weeks, pending receipt of DNA parentage test results from the UK lab. It is anticipated that the total number of registered ID s and IDSH s at the end of 2007 will be There are many tools available to report and analyze the IDHSNA Registration Database. Laura will work with Lucy in the next week or two to walk through reporting functions that are necessary to generate mailings (i.e 2008 inspection letters, notices of breeding reports due, etc.) In addition, the data can be exported to excel for detailed reporting and analysis of statistical information. It will be beneficial to understand the demographics of the breed registry. For example: breakdown of the Stud Book by sex, age, and status (RID vs. IDSH), geographic distribution, trends in breeding, percentage of RID blood in the IDSH horses and much more. SOME REMINDERS: The change in policy regarding submission of DNA samples has been a great help to both the IDHSNA Registration Office as well as the UK Lab. Because samples are received directly into the IDHSNA Kentucky office, Laura is able to record the date samples are delivered to the lab, note any errors that might exist on the for (i.e. misspelled name(s), check that the hair samples are testable ), etc. A number of samples do come in without enough root bulbs to provide enough material for extraction. It is very important to look carefully at the hairs pulled and make sure at least 20 root bulbs are visible. During the months of July and August, the turn-around time for parentage testing results ran abut 3 to 4 weeks from receipt of sample by the lab to receipt of report by the IDHSNA office. Please keep this in mind, especially during the June-August months, as a completed registration from start to completion can take and usually will average no less than 4 weeks. Respectfully Submitted, Laura Reed IDHSNA Membership and Registration Services. IX. Show Committee Report The 2007 Annual Show Committee is pleased to report that this year s horse show is shaping up to be one of the largest in Society history. Final numbers were not available at press time, but as of , there were 88 horses coming from 19 states and the province of Blarney Fall 07 Edition Page 19

22 AGM Minutes (con t)... Ontario, Canada. On entries alone this is the most diverse gathering of members and horses in the history of the IDHSNA, with many additional members attending the show as spectators from as far away as California and Washington State. We would like to thank all of our IDHSNA members for your support! The show itself has generated numerous new horse registrations and membership applications, and we would like to welcome all of our new members and their horses to the IDHSNA family as well. A big welcome also to our foreign visitors and judges who have traveled from Ireland and the UK to join us here in North America...this year s show is truly international and we thank you for your enthusiasm! We would especially like to thank our Irish judges and inspectors, Marily Power and Padraig Fitzpatrick, for your willingness to travel to America to preside over our inspections and show - we are honored to host you and we are very much looking forward to learning from you while you are here! Everyone enjoy the Show! The 2007 Annual Show Committee Liz Freeman, Susan Jensen, Judie Framan X. New Business Ann Cummings and Liz McFarland created a mini-workshop with the members present to get feedback on the goals and focus of the IDH- SNA for The room was divided into four groups, each with the project of collectively recording what they want to see the Board accomplish in the future. The following were the results. GROUP 1: Why can t members suggest a President? Bylaws re-write so the VP succeed the President. Develop a more democratic system. Better promotion-breed society. Treasurer vetted- bonded and double signatures required on each check. Education programs to members and outsiders. Define paid vs. volunteer activities- traditional BOD vs. micromanaging. Comment period? Why can t membership know what happened re: Gina. Transparence in general Focus, education- mission statement. Marketing outside of society- hunter societies and COTH stallion issue. Marketing not about selling- need direction about goals. Education Powerpoint for venues- members to submit videos. Grants, corporate sponsors Target different markets Look to other registries for ideas SWOT analysis XI. Adjourn The Board members and RL Adams were available for questions after the meeting. Respectively Submitted, Elizabeth B. Sells, IDHSNA Executive Secretary During New Business at the AGM, members broke into work groups to develop focus areas for the Society for the next several years. After a quick but vigorous discussion, each group reported back to the larger group with their recommendations (see AGM minutes). The board will be using this information as guidance in establishing priorities in the next several years. Marketing/promotion of the breed was the number one topic in both number of related suggestions and was suggested by each of the 4 groups. A desire for education/conservation also is evident. The need to improve the relationship between the Board and members included such key concepts as transparency, accountability, communication and bylaw changes. With a very difficult year behind us and a great group of members willing to serve the society through its board in 2008, the future looks promising. For those of you who were unable to attend the AGM, please feel free to submit your feedback on the goals and focus for the Society in Send your ideas to Nanette Levin at nlevin@ halcyonacres.com. 27 News from the IDHSNA Registration Office in KY... It s hard to believe seven months have passed since the opening of the IDHSNA office at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The spring, summer, and now the fall season have provided me with a lot of learning opportunities. I must thank Lucy Stevenson for being so generous in sharing her vast knowledge of all things Irish Draught! There was certainly a learning curve for me, as breed registries and pedigrees are something I hadn t had the privilege of working with prior to joining IDHSNA as member services coordinator. Lucy Stevenson transitioned her registration officer duties to me during the week of Rolex, spending countless hours training on procedures, rules and the administration of the Breeder s Assistant Data Base. I ve learned that there are some great tools available for us to analyze the IDHSNA Registration Database. In addition, the data can be exported to Excel for detailed reporting and analysis of statistical information. I imagine it will be beneficial to take a look at and understand the demographics of the breed registry. For example: breakdown of the Stud Book by sex, age, and status (RID vs. RIDSH), geographic distribution, trends in breeding, percentage of ID blood in the IDSH horses and much more. Since I began work with the society in April, almost 100 horses have been registered, including 24 the recently approved stallions, mares and geldings that passed inspections in September. Each registration process seems to have something unique about it whether it is a perfectly completed application, marking sheet and pedigree, or if it is more of a challenging set of papers. I d like to share what I consider the challenging registration package, with the hope that most of next year s applications will be processed in the most efficient and timely manner. First, the change in how to submit DNA samples has been a great help to both the Registration Office as well as the University of KY Lab. Because samples are to be sent directly to me at the IDHSNA Kentucky office, I am able to record the date samples are delivered to the lab, note any errors that might exist on the form (i.e. misspelled name(s), and check that the hair samples are testable. A number of samples do come in without enough root bulbs to provide enough material for extraction. It is very important to look carefully at the hairs you ve pulled and make sure at least 20 root bulbs are visible. For the most part, the samples I ve seen are test worthy, but there have been a few that did not have enough good root bulbs for DNA extraction. It is also very important that the Sire and Dam names are correct! Too many reports come back from the lab with no type on file for Sire or Dam. Most of the time what this means is that the owner listed the Sire with his barn name, or perhaps without his prefix. If the Sire s name on the books is Prefix s Nice Boy but the DNA form lists him as Nice Boy well, we aren t going to get a match. Second, during the months of July and August, the turn-around time for parentage testing results ran at least 3 to 4 weeks from delivery of the hair sample by the lab to receipt of the report by the IDH- SNA. Please keep this in mind, especially during the busy summer months, as a completed registration from start to completion can take and usually will average no less than 4 weeks. Third, take a moment to review the registration check list which is available on the website, in the Membership/Registration pages. Basic requirements, with some important notes follow: Completed IDHSNA application form: fill it out completely, including sex and date of birth. I do receive a number of applications with this information missing. Completed IDHSNA Marking Sheet: Please use red ink where indicated, and note any whorls and cowlicks. Photographs of the horse showing the markings on both sides and front and back: Please make sure all photos are taken recently and that your Marking Sheet reflects the photos. I do receive a number of marking sheets that do not accurately reflect the photographs. Proof of Parentage: [a] Copy of the dam s papers (if she is not registered with the IDHSNA) and a covering cert. issued by the sire s owner or agent, or a copy of papers issued by the IHB or IDHS-GB. For variances from these contact the Member Services Coordinator. As always, I welcome your calls and s so please feel free to call , Mon-Thurs, 11 am 2 pm EST. I look forward to helping you with your registrations and memberships in the coming new year! Laura Reed Support our Business Members... 31 Point of View - Annual Show by Marily Power & Padraig Fitzpatrick Padraig Fitzpatrick and myself had the honour of being the IDHS judges and Inspectors at the recent IDHSNA Show and Registration Tour. Before I say anything I would like to congratulate all of you involved in both sectors and to thank you for looking after us so well. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the trip and that is due to all of you. Now I hope you will allow me to say it as it is as I am not known for what is currently called spin! We were well impressed with the overall quality of the purebred stock though some of the presentation and turnout could be worked on. The horses at the top end of the line would hold their own in any company and in one or two classes it was a toss-up as to who would come first and who last! The disappointing ones were the sport horses at the show. In general the ones under inspection were an improvement, so hopefully that means the horses coming on are getting better. Some of the stock at the show had no noticeable Irish input and we wonder whether including as low as 25% ID is a good idea. We realise that it is good to reward people who have used Irish Draught stock with a category whereby they can define their horses but that may defeat the object of encouraging people to use the IDs to get the characteristics that we are so proud of in our breed. We thought the effort made by people in the Irish Hunter class was splendid and although it was a hard class to judge with so many different sorts it was noticeable how obliging all the contestants were and although puzzled, did their best to follow the rather strange rules! We would like to congratulate all the winners and indeed everyone who brought horses as we know what a major undertaking is was for you all to travel those distances and indeed be away from home commitments for that length of time. Hopefully you have 3 nice new stallions for next year to add to an already impressive line up. And some lucky people have some newly approved mares. It is great to see how much use you make of your stallions, and indeed mares as that is what the Irish Draught is all about. As Irishmen (women!) we are very proud of how high a profile you have given the breed and grateful to see the interest, indeed devotion, given to them. Good luck to you all in the future from us both. A picture IS worth a thousand words! Candid photo taken at the 2007 Annual Show & Inspections.
