12 GSDL State Breed Assessment Critiques 2011 OPEN DOG CRITIQUES JUDGE MR. GRAEME STEVENSON 9 Entered 8 exhibited Gradings 1-3 Excellent Merit, 4-8 Excellent I would like to take this opportunity to thank the German Shepherd Dog League and the Show Committee for their time and effort in ensuring that the weekend was a great success. Of course the assistance in the ring by the stenographers and stewards is very much appreciated by all. This is the only event in NSW where the grading of Excellent Merit is awarded. This grading is awarded to the group of males and females that the Open Class Judges assess as being the best specimens of the breed exhibited at the current time. The Open Dog Class was small group with above average to well average exhibits. The majority were young dogs that did not have enough progeny to allow them to enter statistics of the breed improvement schemes. There were two that managed to have the progeny of 10 or more that had gone through the scheme. Due to the youth of the class, the dogs were judged on their anatomy and performance on the day with consideration to the available progeny exhibited. Two of the exhibits presented a progeny group. Attention at the moment is being paid to looseness of hock joints. The number of animals with deep hindquarter angulation has increased, hence the number of animals with loose hock joints has also increased. This is an area that all judges and surveyors are aware of in Australia. The hock joints in general were good and needed further firmness but there were no noticeable anomalies. The Excellent Merit males showed very good sequence of steps with good to very good firmness of joints and this should be reflected in their progeny. There were instances where the view from the front was not quite correct and elbow connections needed further firmness. More attention needs to be placed on strength of head, strength of foreface and strength of underjaw. The eye colour was medium to dark. Shortness and steepness of upper arm and croup needs further consideration. The slight shortness of underchest was noticeable and this is a further area that needs understanding and consideration as there were exhibits where this problem is prevalent in their bloodlines. Groth The Junior Dog class had a pleasing depth of quality. Most of the representatives in the class mirrored the type of their sires to varying degrees. It was very pleasing to see a quality young son of Jimmy come to the fore and stand in his type. This young male comes from a quality mother and father thus bringing forward very good anatomy and good predictability for the future. Most of the dogs in the class were standing on the upper limits of size and care needs to be taken in this area. The strength, masculinity, colour and pigment on most of the exhibits was on the whole very good. I noted that many of the dogs displayed deep hindquarter angulation and this contributes to the instability in the hock joints as the second thigh in lots of cases is a little too long. Pleasing to note was the absence of the short underchest seen in recent years in many of our young animals. The upper arm once again causes concern and this has a major effect on the animal s ability to reach effectively and manage the hindquarter drive, without falling on the forehand. You will note that this occurred in the latter half of the class. I would like to thank the exhibitors for their sportsmanship in the ring and wish you all the best for the future with your males. In movement he displays strong rear drive with very good reach maintain a very good topline. The rise in the topline was not evident in the walking and gaiting exercise today. The upper arm should be longer and better angled He has a well laid shoulder, slightly deep hind angulation with good fore and just slightly short underchest. Stands correct in front,stepping narrow both front and the rear hock connection should be a little tighter. In movement he displays strong rear drive with good reach however shows a slight tendency to high step in front. Nice type, richly coloured and pigmented. Very good head where the lips should be a little tighter and the eyes should be darker, large but firm ears. Good length of neck which is well placed into a high wither, firm back and a well moulded slightly short croup. He shows good fore and slightly deep hind angulation, with good fore and underchest and good length of foreleg. The pasterns are a little steep. He should stand a little more correct in front with good firmness of the hocks and elbows for his age. In movement has good drive and reach maintaining a firm topline. Overall he should be a little more self assured.

He carries the tail with a cast to the left, stepping a little narrow at rear with good connection of the hocks and elbows for his age. Good fore and slightly short underchest. The pasterns are steep. Steps correct at rear just slightly narrow in front with good connection of the hocks and elbows. Displays a good sequence of steps with good power from the rear and good reach however should hold the wither a little higher during gaiting. 9 th REJE TEL Oakway Quizmaster (NZ)/Veeay Rogue 62.5 cm 12 months Medium size, medium strong, well pigmented grey dog of good type, The ears are set a little low on the skull and eyes should be a little darker. The skull should have a little more breadth. The neck is a little short, level withers, firm back, quite well moulded slightly short croup. The upper arm should be longer and slightly better angled. The forechest should be a little more pronounced with a slightly short underchest. Stepping correct in front and rear with good firmness of hock and elbow joints. Displays good balance and movement with good sequence of step just a slight tendency to fall a little on the forehand. He should be a little less dog aggressive in the ring. OVERVIEW OPEN BITCH 2011 SBA- JUDGE MR. TERRY JARVIS Grading: 6 Excellent Merit 11 Excellent Overall the open bitch class was a pleasure to judge with 6 animals gaining the grading of Ex/merit and 11 animals excellent graded. Thirteen Sires contributed to the breeding of these bitches and the Ex/merit group having three local sires and three German imports. The group varied in size from the correct medium size to the absolute maximum. 1 x 56cm, 1 x 57cm, 4 x 58cm, 3 x 59cm, 5 x 60cm, & 3 x 61cm. In consideration to the problem we have in the height area for my choice of Siegerin was based on size balance and overall proportions. Siegerin *Andacht Super Fortress at 58cm with a true dark eye filled that criteria as well as having the weight of SBA Siegerin in 2010 and Silver medalist at the 36 th and 37 th National shows 5 th excellent at the 38 th National and 17th at this year s National 2011 a creditable record on the National and State scene along with placings at this 2011 SBA 8 th Intermediate bitch and 6 th Intermediate dog. One BScl 1 and 4 animals that have achieved the A & Z stamp.

17 Reserve Siegerin *Vladimir Anarchy at 61cm came into the class with the same criteria with 4 A & Z stamps and 1 BScl 1 animal. Anarchy had 1 st place intermediate dog and 1 st place Puppy bitch at this 2011 SBA again a creditable effort. At the 38 th National she had 1 st Puppy dog and 2 nd Puppy bitch and at the 39 th National 1 st Intermediate dog and Reserve Challenge, 1 st & 3 rd Puppy bitch & 3 rd Puppy dog. Annie was placed 41 st at this year s 39th National. Both these bitches have been very close to each other in specialty competition over the last couple of years with just a few point between them and I must say that both of them performed extremely well and both are a credit to their breeders. 3 rd Ex/merit was *Aldaina Bronach At 60cm and 4 years and 3 months and one litter to her credit so far and had 1 placed 4 th Minor Puppy bitch at this year s 2011 SBA. Pulled out a little lower in the class showed her class as the group started to heat up in competition and could have very well on conformation come in 2 nd No A & Z stamps or Breed surveyed animals to date. Her performance and excellent type in the specialty ring has seen her take out this place and I look forward to her coming to the fore in the future. 4 th Ex./Merit was *Sundaneka Izzy Stardust 60cm 3years and seven months and one litter so far of which one came in 3 rd Minor Puppy bitch 2011 SBA No A & Z stamps yet and no Breed surveyed stock but with time these will surely come and she was Reserve Siegerin at last year s 2011 SBA. I look forward to this bitch making her mark in the future. 5 th Ex./merit *Schneeberg Oso Enchantin 59.5cm 4 years seven months with one litter so far and one placed 10 th place Junior bitch and 1 A & Z stamp with none surveyed so far but hopefully she proves her worth down the track. She is of excellent type and used wisely should do well for the breed looking forward. 6 th Ex/merit * Andacht Zuzi 58cm 4 years seven months 2nd place Minor Puppy bitch 35 th National. 1 Bscl 1 and 3 A & Z stamped progeny Best daughter Andacht Zindi 1 st place puppy Bitch 37 th National,1 st place Puppy bitch 2009 SBA and 1st Intermediate bitch 2010 SBA. A bitch that should be held in high regard in the breeding program of Andacht Kennels. The balance of the excellents were all of good quality bitches which is our forte The heads on the bitches were feminine and noble but we are burdened with problems that we seem to be loaded with overall, like size, upper arms, a couple of short underchests but generally were of good length The eye colour were good medium to dark, withers normal to high but there were a few that could have held their withers a little higher in movement, Backs were firm and croups were generally of good length and lay with a couple of sl/ steep ones showing up. There were a couple of bitches with deep hindquarters but overall were of good length and the thighs were generally broad with a couple with loose hocks but generally there was good firmness overall. FAY STOKES 14 Entered 13 exhibited Gradings 1-3 Very Good Merit 4-13 Very Good OVERALL CLASS SUMMARY This class was represented by 9 different sires however there were 3 by Schneerberg Fire Storm & 3 by Dellahund Kick Atinalong. The winning bitch being by Kwint Juerikstall/Kuirau Jubilation and the 2 nd and 3 rd by Schneerberg Fire Storm. It was a pleasure to judge such a good class of bitches - the winning bitch was absolutely in a class of her own on the day, the performance of the bitch and the handler was flawless and the effortless manner in which she covered the ground both at the walk and the gait was outstanding This bitch was also presented in absolutely perfect show condition and is a credit to her owners. The second bitch was also a bitch who was presented in absolutely beautiful show condition, absolutely firm and dry and again very well handled and certainly in stance presented just as good a picture as the winning bitch however the reach on the first bitch and the effortless covering of the ground with the least number of steps overshadowed the second bitch. The bitch in third place and another presented in absolutely firm dry condition, but out of coat on the day, did not do a very good individual however once she settled she moved herself up through the class with relative ease and thoroughly deserved her grading of Very Good Merit. This class certainly showed that we will have really beautiful bitches moving up into the Open Classes giving stiff competition to those already there. Good ground covering movement however she should show more enthusiasm in movement and gave the impression on the day that she would rather be anywhere but in the ring. JUNIOR BITCH KAREN HEDBERG Gradings 12 Very Good, 3 Good In this class there were 12 different sires of the 15 bitches present.. This led to a class of very mixed type, however the general quality extended well down the class as evidenced by the number of animals graded very good. Of concern in this class was the number of very large bitches 1/3 rd of the class were determined to be standing on the absolute maximum size. The good features of this class were the generally very good strength, very good heads and generally very good proportions. Forequarters were mostly very good with the usual restrictions in length and lay of upper arm. Hindquarters were generally very good with no excessive depth of hindquarter nor the excessive looseness of hocks that goes with this problem. Most croups were pleasingly well laid with few being steep it is nice to see this problem diminishing, however some are still rather short with the accompanying lack of the desired width of hindquarter. Ligaments were generally firm with some still to find final firmness of elbows and hocks, as one would expect in a Junior Class. Overall, this was a very interesting class to judge. Double P1 upper and lower left side. Slightly small P1 and P2 s. This bitch moved very well at all speeds and impressed with her harmonious outlines and balance.

During movement powerful drive where the reach could occasionally be more effective at the fast gait. This bitch scrabbled in her individual and took quite some time to settle down. She was originally called out much further down the class but once she settled down she started to expand very well at all speeds and hence moved up to second place. 3 rd Sheznova Solitaire AZ *Ch Kwint v Juerikstall (Ndl) az x Sheznova Star Esprit AZ Large medium strong bitch of very good type, very good balance and proportions. Her pigment could be stronger, very good head and expression, good wither firm back slightly short croup well laid, very good fore and hindquarter angulations, correct chest proportions, steps slightly close behind just slightly loose in hocks. During movement shows very good powerful; ground covering gait. This bitch was initially in second place but started to bunch up behind and failed to drive as well as she should in the later part of the class and lost a place. A lovely bitch with very good balance. 4 th Conkasha Destinies Child *Fellow v Santamar (Bel) az x Conkasha Xena AZ Standing on maximum size, large strong substantial bitch of very good type, very good height to length proportions, good head and expression, medium eye, level wither, firm back, good length and very good lay of croup, good fore and very good hindquarter angulations, the upper arm, while of good length is slightly steep, hocks and elbows still to find final firmness, during movement, shows very strong ground covering gait, with powerful drive maintaining a very good top line, reach could be a little freer. This bitch as she worked started to slightly kick up behind and lost her strength of drive to a certain extent. This bitch was only 9 months of age so was giving away a lot in maturity.
