DEADLINE FOR JULY NEWSLETTER ITEMS IS JULY 14 th OR THE BOARD MEETING: If you have news items, please send them to the newsletter editor, Charles Daniel: Official Newsletter of the Triangle Wide Horseman s Association GO: Charles Daniel, Editor June, 2014 NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION: Beginning with this issue of The Hitching Post, we are discontinuing the general distribution of complimentary copies of the newsletter to nonmembers. If you have been showing with us this year but have hesitated joining, or you just enjoy receiving the newsletter, it s never too late to join to keep up with activities of the TWHA. JUNE BOARD MEETING: The July Board Meeting will be held on July 14 th at Mayflower Seafood which is off highway at 3742 Chapel Hill Blvd., across from Sam s Club in Durham. The meeting starts at 7 PM. Come earlier if you plan to eat before the meeting. (Visit for maps and menu) ALL MEMBERS ARE INVITED. SEE YOU THERE JIM WILLOUGHBY VOTED LIFE TIME MEMBER Congratulations to Jim Willoughby upon being elected to life time membership of TWHA by the Board of Directors at their June 2 nd meeting. This is a well deserved honor. For those of you that do not know the Willoughbys, Jim and Kay have been active in the club since its beginning, having served as officers and directors for many years. For those of you following the newsletter for the past couple of months, you know that Jim and Kay are still coming to our shows to visit and help out. Jim, thank you for all that you have done for TWHA SHOW SEASON: The 2014 show season continues with great shows June Shows The NCAHA Summer Extravaganza 2 day open horse show was held June 7 8 at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh, NC. This counts as two shows for TWHA points. Concurrent with the open show were a Sport Horse show and a Dressage show. The shows were well attended; for example, all the time slots for the Sport Horse in hand classes were filled. The high point winners based on the twoday totals from the open shows are given below. The 2014 TWHA Youth Open Horse Show was held June 21 at Grayland Farms in Durham, NC. In spite of rain the day before and the humid heat, quite a few people attended and we had a good time. The Grays have done a lot to improve drainage and footing in their outdoor ring, and conditions improved rapidly as the day went on. Thanks to
2 the Grays for supporting TWHA and letting the club have the Youth Show at their farm. The TWHA youth had another Pony Toss at the NCAHA Summer Extravaganza and at the Youth Show on the 21 st. The Pony Toss has turned out to be a big hit this summer and the youth are making a good return on their efforts to fund youth programs. Thank you to everyone who showed, worked, or just came to spent time watching and talking with other people at the June shows. Everyone who came helped make the shows a success. It was good to see Jim and Kay Willoughby return for the shows on June 7 8, and the club again sends a big thank you to Kay who helped in the show office both days. July Show Our next show will be the Circle K Ranch Open Horse Show to be held on July 19 th. The start time will be 10:00am and the judge will be Carrie Everhard. The class list is enclosed. Just a reminder Exhibitors must show in 5 shows to qualify for year end awards. OTHER SHOW RESULTS: During the NCAHA Summer Extravaganza, I spotted Brian and Suzanne Lougee waiting for a class to begin (actually, in that crowd I spotted Buckwheat first). I went over to say hello and met several of the riders from her barn who were showing with us that weekend. I learned that four of these young ladies Hailey Anderson, Allison Akers, and Abby and Ella Holmes had shown at the North Central District 4H show in Raleigh on May and did really well. Hailey Anderson and Ella Holmes competed in the Cloverbud Division and both received first place honors. Allison Akers competed in the Little Britches Division earning several top five honors and qualifying for the State 4H Championship show riding Pocos Mesquite Mecue. Abby Holmes competed in the Junior Western Rider Division and won 4 out of 5 of her classes riding Buckwheat and also qualified for the State 4H Championships. The State Championships will be held in July and Abby Holmes will be competing for one of the prestigious spots to represent North Carolina at the 4H Regional Championships. Congratulations to these young riders, and when you have time away from 4H shows we hope to see you again at some of the TWHA shows. YOUTH NEWS: Youth Scholarships are still available for You can find forms and rules on the TWHA website, or contact Monica Hagwood at (919) with questions and for details. NC HORSE COUNCIL: Randy Miller is representing TWHA on the Horse Council in If you have any concerns or issues related to the horse industry that might be addressed by the Horse Council, pass them along to Randy. CARDS AND FLOWERS: We were sorry to hear that Ellen Deal recently lost one of her horses. Please keep Ellen in your thoughts. Let Judy Jenkins, or any of our officers and board members, know if the club needs to send a card to anyone associated with TWHA. Judy can be reached by at: doublejstables@yahoo.com. FEED COUPONS ARE VALUABLE! Keep collecting your Southern States proof ofpurchase coupons from feed bags and send them to Sammy Jenkins. Each feed coupon is worth $0.25 and the money will be used to support club activities. 2

Completed orders are to be returned to Kim Moser, and must be received by June 30 th, OTHER HORSE NEWS The State Fair Horse Shows will be greatly changed in A number of breeds have been dropped from the program because of declining participation. On Monday Wednesday, the NC Horse Council will put on horse related entertainment. Look for ads and check the Fair and Horse Council web sites. On Wednesday and Thursday there will be Polo Cross matches. More events and schedules will be announced as time for the State Fair approaches. Correction: Last month we reported that Durham County is building a big parking lot on Massey Chapel Road to provide access to the American Tobacco Trail. Our information was incorrect; the parking lot will be on Scott King Road. There will be parking spaces for horse trailers. TREATING WHITELINE DISEASE (or SEEDY TOE or THRUSH or FUNGUS) A followup Last month I brought to your attention an excellent article by Cole Henderson, Professional Farrier and AFA Member. The article can be found online at With all the rain and damp weather this spring our farrier and veterinarian both report they are seeing higher than usual numbers of cases of whiteline disease and other fungus related hoof problems. As I mentioned, we (Charles and Myra) have one of those cases both front feet of an unshod horse. After reading this article, I began treating with a combination of 2% miconazole nitrate (found in sprays such as Micatin and Lotrimin) to kill fungus, and Lysol to kill bacteria and viruses. I promised an update on our results after a course of treatment and a second trim by our farrier. Here is what we have found.
4 4 We went 43 days (1 day over 6 weeks) between trims. As part of the first trim, our farrier trimmed the hooves to open the whiteline and reduce the depth of the groove along the whiteline so it didn t trap as much foreign matter and was easier to clean. For the first 8 days after the trim, we treated twice a day, cleaning each time and alternating between miconazole and Lysol. After 8 days both feet were greatly improved, and we could not discern any further deterioration of the whiteline. For the next week we treated once a day with miconazole unless we detected odor while cleaning the hoof. Then we would use Lysol first. For the last 4 weeks we have cleaned hooves daily and picked out any debris along the whiteline. Use of miconazole and Lysol spray has been more sporadic. When our farrier trimmed last week it was obvious that the grooves along the whiteline had gotten no deeper. In fact, the trim removed about half of the damaged tissue. Another trim will probably remove what is left in the heels and the little bit in the quarters. Has this been a successful treatment for whiteline disease? In our case I would certainly say yes. As an added benefit it has been a good learning experience for a horse who never really liked having his feet picked up and cleaned. Now when he sees me coming with the hoof pick and a can of spray he almost hands me the front feet, and he is much less likely to pull away on the rear. (A disclaimer the use of trade names is for identification purposes only and is not a recommendation. There are generics and other products that contain the same ingredients. Also, the information regarding treatment should not be considered a substitute for consulting your veterinarian or farrier.) ALL MATERIAL FOR EACH ISSUE OF THE NEWSLETTER MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE END OF THAT MONTH S BOARD MEETING If you would like to tell the club about your other horse related activities, such as trail rides at unique locations, participation and awards at rated shows, or a new arrival in the barn, please sent your news to the newsletter editor.
