4 ANNUAL MEETING AND YOUNG RIDERS Ensuring the Next Generation of Breeders and Horsemen by Willy Arts and Christine DeHerrera To survive and thrive, the horse industry must bring new faces into the fold. Although adult amateurs and professionals receive the majority of the industry s attention, we must encourage young enthusiasts to develop the skills they will need to succeed for a lifetime with horses. To ensure that we help grow the next generation of breeders and horsemen, the KWPN-NA has been developing programs to educate and excite young riders not the FEI definition of Young Riders, but rather youth who are interested in sport horses, whether jumping, dressage, eventing or driving. A real horseman has a wide variety of experiences that are not limited just to the show ring. To this end, we have identified three areas in which young riders particularly need advice and help: Evaluating Potential While there are many young riders and young professionals that know how to negotiate a clear-round, or ride a shoulder-in, half-pass or flying change, these same riders don t have the knowledge of how to identify potential in young or unstarted horses. This ability to evaluate talent requires a thorough understanding of biomechanics, movement, conformation and the development from youngster to performance horse. Observing Thousands of Horses Accurately discerning equine talent arises from observing hundreds or even thousands of horses. Competing at shows is not enough to develop an eye. Networking Finally, young riders need a network of horse industry veterans. Whether a young person wants to become a professional, or continue their riding as an amateur, they need a network to help them grow as horsemen and women. For riders striving to have a career with horses, access to professional help, as well as horses to ride, is critical to success. At the KWPN-NA, we are hoping to help bridge the gap between riding and showing, and developing the skills and tools needed for long-term success at our Annual Meeting, March 24-26, 2011 in Hanford, CA, at DG Bar Ranch. Like all of the Annual Meetings, there will be workshops and lectures by experts from Europe and North America, with the new, specific goal of preparing all visitors for the 2012 Stallion Show, which we will attend as a group in the Netherlands. The experts will focus on helping attendees learn to evaluate horses for purchase, riding, breeding or even just to become an educated spectator. Many horses of different types will be available both in hand and under saddle so that there are a wide-range of real world examples. The access to the world s top authorities on sport horses, and their decades of experience, results in unparalleled learning opportunities, including insights that are often not found in traditional sources. While the Annual Meeting has always been open to young riders, this year we specifically wanted to reach out to them. Our goal is to create a group within the group so that young riders will feel comfortable asking questions and having their specific needs addressed. We want to help young riders connect with each other, and also with breeders, riders and trainers that can potentially mentor these developing horsemen. Caitlin Hamar and Michaela Tolman, will help young riders get the most out of the Annual Meeting experience. Their goal is to create a supportive and nurturing learning environment that helps young riders feel comfortable being around some of the sport s foremost authorities. As group, they will also get special opportunities to interact with the experts and ask questions. The KWPN-NA believes that as young riders become involved with the organization they can network with breeders who potentially need riders for their young stock. It can become win-win for both. The riders have the opportunity to sit on quality young horses, and breeders have access to local riders at an affordable price. And while riders are often very focused on sitting in the saddle, young riders today are breeders and judges of tomorrow. We want to give them the tools so that when they are willing, able or desire to breed that they have a good baseline to start, instead of having to learn only by trial and error. While our goal is help young riders develop into true horsemen, these young people help us too. They bring fresh perspective, enthusiasm and new ideas that will keep our organization moving forward. 8 2010 NORTH AMERICAN KEURING RIDING HORSES Trying to schedule a keuring tour around the dates of the WEG, Regional Championship Shows for Canada and USA, and the availability of host facilities was a nightmare. Somehow we did, albeit the zigzag travel left one dizzy. Toronto to Edmonton to Seattle to California to Wisconsin to Michigan to Pennsylvania to Maine to Florida to Georgia. All in exactly 14 days including two educational seminars. A few bits of Tour Trivia temperatures ranged from 106 degrees F (41+C) to a lovely 67 degrees (19+), 4 time zones crossed twice, and a total of 11,292 miles (18,172 km) from first site to last. But let s get on with the horses. Joining the North American KWPN jury of Deborah Harrison and Faith Fessenden at the first location was Toine Hoefs, KWPN jury member. Jury and ribbon girl, photo Roy Maher Prima Equestrian, Mt. Albert, ON It was the fourth time Prima Equestrian hosted a KWPN keuring. Highlights include Beam P (Indoctro pref x Pepita S keur by Emilion keur x Larome) bred by Prima Equestrian and owned by Maureen Smith & Susan Parker. Beam P has been a top contender in Jump Canada as a 3- and 4- Year-Old. An 8.5 attitude added to his high Iron Spring Farm Cup score. Beam P, photo Roy Maher Notable in the dressage mare class was the beautiful black Cispoint (Westpoint x Pribalda keur by Gribaldi pref x Daimler), bred by F.Smits and owned by Sarah Bates. The mare easily earned ster but was just shy of keur eligible. Cispoint, photo Roy Maher This location always has top jumper foals. Two of note were Feather Bloom (Mr. Blue x Prelude keur sport/sp by Calvados keur x Voltaire pref) a well built filly with good body use in her canter, bred/owner- S. Trickey & J.Dubois. Placing behind her was Finnan (Wittinger x Cornetta by Cornet Obolensky x Pilot) bred/owned by Alison Moore. Well built with good bone, this colt used his top line well to show his strong canter. by Faith Fessenden Feather Bloom, photo Roy Maher Carousel Ridge Farm, Sherwood Park, AB Carousel Ridge Farm stepped up to host for the first time displaying hospitality and commitment to all KWPN horse enthusiasts in the area. Blossom ((Lupicor x Vanilla Shake by Larino keur x Ferro pref) b/o John van den Bosch, showed rhythm, tempo, activity and a ground-covering canter. Becoming ever more careful with quick foreleg and body reflexes, she improved the opening of haunches at every fence. Earning nothing less than an 8 and even a 9 for reflexes, Blossom would become the North American Champion for the Jumping IBOP and the 5-Year-Old ISF Cup by the end of the Tour. 9 Also in this class was Beasinaa (Pyriet x Rosinaa elite by Wellington keur x Ariban xx bb) bred by Alison Hagen, owned by Doreen and Cindy Orr. This mare showed good posture, use of hindquarters in canter, reflexes, attitude and rideability. With her passing IBOP the mare earned her keur predicate. Day ster by Gribaldi x Rossini) did not let owner/breeder Gwen Blake down. With her clean, correct legs and nice movement, the mare took the Best Adult Horse ribbon and earned her star. Sophia, photo Bonnie Herbers Another Van den Bosch entry was the international jumper mare, 12- year-old Sophia sport/sp (Goodtimes x Imalve by Ekstein x Jasper keur). She showed wonderful condition, good feet and beautiful type allowing to quickly get her star. An 8 for conformation, 8 for walk and 8.5 for trot moved her to keur. Two more entries for b/o Alison Hagen were notable. Fancy black Coleman (Obelisk x Jabananta ster sport/dr by Cabochon keur x Irco Polo) earned his ster in the Dressage Gelding Class; and Cashew (Johnson x Lady W keur pref by Farrington keur x Heidelberg pref) earned her ster and keur eligible with an 8.5 for canter and 8.0 for self-carriage. Donida Farm, Auburn, WA Murphy s Law was in force at Donida Farm with irregularities forcing dismissals in several classes. However, Contessa (Contango x Precious Fair Rosa, photo Carolyn Bunch What was to be the North American Champion Dressage Foal had all smiling. Fair Rosa (Ampère x Zen Rosa elite by Farrington keur x Jazz pref) b/o by Dan & Gina Ruediger, showed beautiful presence and posture. Well built, standing solidly on all four legs, with strong croup and haunches Fair Rosa showed her parts were components of a whole that worked. She lifted fluidly with power, showed suspension and technique in trot with a good canter as well. DG Bar Ranch, Hanford, CA DG Bar Ranch, the de Groot family and Willy Arts always have top horses and a well-oiled machine of handlers and riders. Sponsors of the DG Bar Cup, the DGB Cup classes here are filled with some of the top horses in the US. A single 2-year-old colt was shown in the stallion pre-evaluation class. This class lets the owner know whether the young stallion is a possible candidate for approval at age 3. Dream Catcher (Contester x Gigi by Merano x Rantares) bred by MaSu. Dream Catcher, photo Michelle Olsen Hamacher of Florida and owned by Dara Rip, has the same overall appearance as his sire that unfortunately died this year. The handsome bay is wellbuilt with good legs and feet and shows good power and articulation in movement. We hope to see him presented next year. In the Dressage Geldings, Bad Boy (Olivi x Lotte keur by Damiro B x Caritas) bred by M. Tijssen and owned by Dantia Benson continues to show his quality. A good-looking type, he is correct in his movement and can throw in that extra when he puts the pedal down. With his walk, trot, canter and self-carriage he went to the head of the class for star quality and placed first in the Top Fives. 10 2010 NORTH AMERICAN KEURING Flemmingh pref by Nimmerdor pref) bred by VDL Stud and owned by Jeanne Schamblin. This large framed Register A mare showed suspension and articulation earning 8 s for trot, canter and self-carriage. Because she also passed her IBOP, she will be eligible for the keur predicate when she passes her veterinary requirements. In second was her stablemate Chanel SVS (Jazz pref x Olympia ster by Idocus crown x Wanroij) b/o by Jeanne Schamblin. This mare was very typey, light-footed and active in movement and earned her ster. Two mares tied for third, Bakara (Sir Sinclair x Thea keur by Idocus crown x Wanroij) b/o by Janice Kissel was a very supple mare showing good articulation, which served her well in uphill movement. She was designated keur eligible pending a passing IBOP score. canter he went to the head of the class to be North American Champion in the Top Fives for this age group in the DGB Cup. Bakara (see prior) engaged well from behind and using her joints, with great rideability. Her lowest scores were 8 s on walk, self-carriage and talent, 8.5 s on all the rest for an IBOP total of 82. Easy moving, active, with an easy, scopey canter his lowest score was a 7 for walk, 8 s and 8.5 s on the rest topping out with a 9 for submission. Jumping IBOP and ISF Cup In the Iron Spring Farm Cup Borvelien DG prok (Canturo x Corvelien Z by Carthago Z x Cor de la Bryère) bred/owned by DG Bar Breeders, showed scope and talent especially when asked to be ridden more forward. A single 7 was scored with the rest being 7.5 s and an 8 for scope and canter earned her a 75.5 for the IBOP, a 76 for the ISF Cup, first place at DG Bar and 4th in the Top Fives for the ISF Cup for 4-Yr- Olds. Ceolieta, photo Judy Nishi Also in third was Ceolieta prok, another Register A mare (Sir Donnerhall x Jeolieta Elite by Zeoliet x Majoor) bred by J.C. van Riessen and owned by DG Bar Breeders. She will also earn her star predicate upon completing her veterinary requirements Dressage IBOP and DG Bar Cup Bad Boy (see prior) continued to show his quality. Earning 8 s on walk, trot and self-carriage, and an 8.5 for Bantana V, photo Judy Nishi Bantana V (Flemmingh pref x Lantan ster pref by Hemmingway x Zuidhorn), bred by P. Verdellen Paarden Fok & Opfok and owned by DG Bar Breeders, Inc., was a nice type and mover with suspension and active technique in movement. Bending nicely on circles in good self-carriage she held her tempo well. She had only 8 s and 8.5 s ending with an 81.5 in both the IBOP and the DGB Cup and finished third in the Top Fives. Brendo ster q (Florencio x Sierra Siren keur by Volckmar x Wanroij), bred by Luke Bianco MD and owned by Ashlyn and Amber De Groot, made the top places for North America a sweep from this location with a 4th place finish in the Top Fives. The grey Brando KF, photo D & D Photography Brando KF (Indoctro xnulanda ster by Burggraaf x Voltaire) bred/owned by Kimberlee von Disterlo of Kimberlee Farms, showed a good attitude with care and quickness over the fences. For the IBOP straight 7.5 s were given with an 8 for attitude for a total of For the ISF Cup his technique brought the scores down slightly to end with a 74.5 and a second place. 11 Foals The foal classes were large with the jumper foals going first. Forevelien DG (Idocus crown x Corvelien Z by Carthago Z x Cor de la Bryère) b/o by DG Bar Breeders is well developed showing activity and suspension in trot. In canter the grey filly was balanced with easy lead changes. Eight first premium dressage foals were led by two notables. Famebria DG, photo Judy Nishi Famebria DG (Idocus crown x Valeska-DG elite by Krack C x Farrington keur) b/o by DG Bar Breeders. Well muscled with a long shoulder and good hind-leg angles, this chestnut filly made her dam (USA Qualifier for YHC in Verden, Germany) proud when she lifted and moved with power and suppleness, also showing a good canter. Her 76 conformation and 78 movements totaled a 77. Finally DG (Idocus crown x Bolimbria ster by Sandro Hit x Doruto) was a mere.5 behind her stable mate. Nicely built with a long shoulder and good croup the youngster moved correctly with good foreleg technique. Following this keuring, our Dutch colleague, Toine Hoefs, left for Holland as the NA jury headed for Chicago. Finishing Touches Farm, Genoa City, WI Meeting up with our new Jury arrival, Bart Henstra, we drove 1 ½ hour northeast from O Hare airport over the border into Wisconsin. We looked forward to visiting a new keuring location, Finishing Touches Farm, owned by Cheryl Quick. A breeder of German and KWPN horses, Cheryl was tapped by two experienced KWPN breeders and members, Tracy Geller and Sarah Krause, to provide a venue for the introduction of the KWPN system to a new group of enthusiasts. In the Dressage foals, Fabergé (Ampère x Sandro Set by Sandro Hit x Sion) b/o Cheryl Quick of Finishing Touches Farm took the top spot. Beautiful in presence, the bay colt shot upward in movement with power, activity, suspension and self-carriage to earn a 78 on conformation and an 80 on movement. In Dressage Geldings, Cartouche (Sir Donnerhall x Leolita ster sport/dr by Gershwin x Woldstreek) b/o Stephanie Severn of Hopeful Farm Sporthorses, did fulfill the farm name with an 8.5 for trot which contributed to the 70/75 needed to meet the requirements for star. The jury reiterated that the studbook inspection itself is the first of the evaluations and is the most important. To be admitted into the studbook is a breeder s goal and entitles their horses to wear the royal lion brand mark. Proud and smiling, all attendees lined their horses up for that! Claybrook Farms, Ithaca, MI This was the sixth time we ve been to Claybrook Farms, and the sixth time we ve come away with horses hitting the scores for a place in the Top Fives. Chiki, photo Love Above Photography In the Jumper Mares, Chiki set the bar high (no pun intended). By Chin- Chin x Wiki ster by Lupicor x Kroongraaf, the pretty bay, bred by R. Vroom, is owned by Claybrook Farms. This mare exemplified a sport bodytype. Interestingly, she was supple and showed suspension in the trot; whereas in canter she was slightly stiffer in her back but OH, MY! Through the chute she showed her breeding with huge scope and very good technique. A 7.5 for conformation and up to 8.5 s for reflexes and scope, she easily received her star and was designated keur eligible. At the conclusion of the tour she was 2nd place in the Top Fives. Iron Spring Farm, Coatesville, PA Iron Spring Farm has been one of our east coast locations since we began having keurings 25 years ago. From their famous stallions, we ve seen groups of descendants grow from keuring foals to international competitors. New to the sire line-up here is the newly approved Florianus. 12 2010 NORTH AMERICAN KEURING Standouts in the Born before June 1 group were: Florence ISF (Florianus x Toscane ster by Cabochon keur x Amethist) b/o by Iron Spring Farm. Well built, with a somewhat vertical neck, the bay filly s first step was upwards into good movement with suspension. Floraya ISF (Florianus x Toraya ster by Goodtimes x Gershwin) another ISF product was lovely in type and proportions. Leggy with a long croup this chestnut filly held her own in the lineup. In the Born After June 1 group the standouts were: Flash Gordon S.E. photo Stacy Lynne Photography Flash Gordon S.E. (Sir Donnerhall Bardot S.E. ster by Florencio x Wanroij) b/o by Siegi Belz-Fry of Stall Europa was next in line showing elegance and long lines, a good wither and a good croup. Notes were made on this colt s light legs which kept his score slightly lower. In movement, he showed activity and suspension, although brought his hocks a little high. His canter was particularly good. Fleetwood ISF (UB 40 x Toraya ster by Goodtimes x Gershwin) b/o ISF and yes, thanks to E.T., Toraya did her job twice. A typical UB 40, this chestnut colt was very elegant with shape of the neck, shoulder and wither contributing to the forehand impression. A few notes on his hind legs kept the conformation score from being higher. In movement however, this youngster was right in the top with an 80. Presence in movement, with articulation, power and suppleness, he could have gotten an even higher score with a little better canter. First Bordeaux photo Stacy Lynne Photography The Hunter Foal class saw a special youngster, First Bordeaux (Popeye K x Flips Last Party by The Flips Comin x Senale Whip) b/o by Jacqueline Adams. Sire Popeye K had successfully completed KWPN-NA Licensing right here at ISF, so it was fitting that his son should take the class. This elegant leggy colt moved as he looked for solid scores. Jumping Geldings In the Jumper Geldings class: Chivas (Judgement-ISF crown x Alexis Titty II Z elite sport/ev by Alexis Z x Germus) b/o by Dayna Gant of Apple Lane Farm, showed the abilities of his pedigree. A strongly built youngster showed a big strided and active canter. In jumping, 8 s for reflexes and technique, and a 9 for scope locked in his star and Champion Gelding Jumper in the Top Fives. Carte Blanche SCF (Lupicor x Wildcard SCF elite by Goodtimes x Silvio I) bred by Dr. Carlos & Karin Jimenez of Sporting Chance Farm and owned by Juliana Starbuck of Starbuck Equestrian. The bay gelding was very expressive with a sport look to him. His trot showed suppleness and suspension underscoring his innate ability to get air. His canter was clear, and jumping was easy but somewhat quick (reflexes earned a 7.5) and a little forward, but his use of neck and back was good. Dressage Mares produced another standout. Catalina-ISF (Sir Sinclair x Persimmon-ISF keur sport/dr by Contango pref x Road at Sea xx) led the line up. This elegant modern mare is a reflection of the keuring process since her dam was a Keuring Champion in the past. Showing suppleness, suspension and engagement no score was lower than a 7.5 with her trot earning an 8. These qualities also gave her the keur eligible status. The Jumper IBOP and Iron Spring Farm Cup highlighted Alexandria ster prok (Corland x Netian Joy keur by Ahorn Z x Miami Springs) b-dr. Sharon Anderson, o-nod Hill Farm, LLC and Dana & James Scott. The bay mare showed eagerness with an active and powerful movement combined with technique and scope to pass her IBOP with a 76 and move from ster prok to Elite. The 76 held for the ISF Cup for 5-Yr-Olds sending her to first place in the Top Fives. For the Dressage IBOP & DGB Cup, the ISF bred Citation-ISF (Contango pref x Saigon Elite by Jazz) o/r Alex Robertson, showed activity, good posture, suppleness, long strides with Page 12 Newsletter of the KWPN-NA

13 good swing through his body and three good gaits. He earned nothing lower than 7.5 s and on trot, canter and submission the bay colt nailed 8 s becoming the DG Bar Cup Champion for 3- Yr-Olds at this location with a He was tied for first place in the Top Fives. Pineland Farms, New Gloucester, Maine Pineland Farms has provided their excellent facility for keurings on three occasions. This time it provided the backdrop for several top horses. Day one at Pineland was for the education seminar with a well-rounded group in attendance. The keuring was on day two, beginning with the Dressage IBOP and DG Bar Cups. Cadence, photo Unbridled Photography Receiving a 77 for both her IBOP and the DG Bar Cup, Cadence (Idocus crown x Vera by Don Primaire x Saros xx bb keur) b/o Pineland Farms, started a little strung out and heavy-footed, but soon showed her suppleness and balance becoming more uphill with good stride-length and clarity in her gaits. She received 8 s for walk, canter and her remarkable rideability. For her linear scoring, she received a 70 for conformation and 80 for movement and she now carries the ster and IBOP predicates. She placed 5th in the Dressage Ibop and 3rd in the DGB Cup for 3-Year Olds in the Top Fives. Not to be overshadowed was the Jumping entry bred by FE Roos and owned by VDL Stud and Kathy Hickerson of Majestic Gaits Farm, Cenieta (Veron x Nieta keur by Concorde pref x Zeoliet keur). She scored 70 on her conformation, but eyebrows rose when she moved and jumped. Her good attitude, active and powerful movement with good self-carriage served her well. Her jumping style of care and good opening behind gave her a 75, her ster, the Best Adult Horse-Jumper ribbon, and a fifth place tie in the Top Fives! Youngsters had highlights as well. The Jumper Foal, Fraucordia MG (Campbell VDL x Tercordia elite by Marlon x Acord II) b/o Kathy Hickerson, was leggy with a pretty front. In movement the bay filly showed suppleness, self-carriage and a good canter to earn a first premium with a 74 for conformation and a 78 for movement = 76 overall and the top spot in the Top Fives. The top Dressage Foal was stablemate Frauloma MG. Pennock Point Sport Horses, Reddick, FL After the Pineland keuring we flew 1,500 miles south and the next day found us at Pennock Point Sport Horses. Here we had two special Jumper Mares. Ana Bella M2S, photo Kasey Bedard & Christopher Heale Ana Bella M2S ster IBOP (Condios x Una Bella M2S by Ekstein x Landino) bred by Morningside Stud (Ireland) and owned by Sakura Hill Farm. Showing tension as she began the ISF Cup, the bay mare was happiest over the jumps with terrific reflexes (8.5) and technique and scope (both 7.5). Her beautiful foreleg technique and attitude served her well, but she could have opened more in her haunches. Her talent (7.5) and attitude (8) saw her earn a 75 overall and 2nd place in the Top Fives. Vibrant LPR, photo Tessa Jamieson An IBOP Jumper, Vibrant LPR (Orame/Pasandra by Welllington) b/o Nancy Debosek of Lone Palm Ranch, showed suppleness and sufficient length of stride, with rhythm and balance. The Dressage IBOP/DGB Cup Mares introduced a lovely newcomer, the ster mare Cinderella (Florencio x Petra ster prok by Havel x Armstrong) bred by Matty Manissink Stables and owned by Inspo s Bill and Belinda Wertman, this lovely dark chestnut mare was supple, active, carrying behind and forward. 7.5 s and 8.0 s were her scores for a total of 77.5 for both the IBOP and the DG Bar Cup. She was awarded the keur predicate and tied for first place in the Top Fives for the DGB Cup for 3-Year-Olds. Cornerstone LPR, photo Kasey Bedard & Christopher Heale The Hunter Gelding class exemplified the flexibility of the keuring specialization system. Breeder/owner Nancy Debosek asked the Jury to designate and judge Cornerstone LPR (00 Seven x Vixen LPR ster by Goodtimes x Gastronom) in whatever direction they saw fit, based on his abilities. Good thing, too. As a Hunter, a second premium ribbon would have been forthcoming. As it was the Jury saw a lovely, smooth type, with activity in the legs, balanced in its changes and upward self-carriage. Dressage, they said, and, by the way, a first premium ribbon (70/75) and star! Icing for the grey gelding was a four-way tie for 4th in the Top Fives for Dressage Geldings! Blalock Lakes, Newnan, GA Our final stop at Blalock Lakes welcomed us with KWPN flags and posters everywhere. Our first time here, we would finish with some special notables. The long lined, Studbook mare, Ultralinde, (Gribaldi pref x Ilinde keur sport/dr by Darnels x Octaaf) bred by B. Derksen and owned by. Valerie Swygert of Jasmine Farm, impressed with her elastic movements (8.5) and rideability/talent (8 each) for the top IBOP score. Centerline (UB 40 x Tiger Tops ster by Wellington keur x Caritas), b. Julie Haralson/Haralson Farm, o. Lisa Anne Kapp, presented an obedient IBOP and DG Bar Cup performance and, with 73 points, just missed passing the IBOP. When showing his free movement in the Studbook/Star evaluation he became much more uphill and powerful in the trot, raising his score in trot (8) and self carriage (7) receiving his ster. The elegant 2-year-old filly, Deodora HF (Jazz pref x Zamantha HF by Métall x Casanova) b/o- Julie Haralson, is a real Jazz with a good top line and a powerful, uphill trot. With scores of 73/76 she received a first premium. The final icing on the cake was a beautiful Hunter filly, Filigree (Paparazzo x Pavottie ster by Ferro pref x G.Ramiro Z pref) b/o Brooks Martin of Cabingate Farm, a recent convert to the KWPN-NA. Her very good front and top line, coupled with her charm and elegance, resulted in an 80 for conformation. Her light footed, supple, and ground covering trot gave her a 76 for movement. Saying farewell to all, we winged our way to our respective homes, pleased with a job well done. 15 FUN AND FRIENDS AT THE 2010 PENNOCK POINT KEURING Or Successful partnering of KWPN Breeders and Trainers Lone Palm Ranch, owned by Nancy and Richard Debosek, is an 84 acre breeding and training facility between Tampa and Ocala Florida. Lone Palm Ranch has been developing it s breeding program of KWPN horses for 20 years, with many great successes of top five KWPN horses in North America, Ster and Keur Predicates. Monica, Makota and Michelle photo by Tessa Jamieson Sakura Hill Farm, owned by Michele and Makota Sakurai, is a breeding, training and sales stable in Gainesville, FL, with the goal to produce international caliber show jumpers and A-circuit hunters. Sakura Hill Farm also offers several services to fellow breeders, clients and riders including young horse starting and development, competition/training partnerships and a working student program. Sakura Hill s primary rider is daughter Monica. For this year s Keuring, Lone Palm Ranch partnered with Sakura Hill Farm LLC, with great results. Mares Vibrant LPR and Vixen LPR are both jumper bred, but have had years of dressage training in which Vibrant especially has done well. In 2005, Vibrand was awarded with a third place for free jumping and fourth for conformation, receiving her Star and Keur Eligible status. This year Nancy and Richard decided to put her through the jumping IBOP test to achieve her Keur predicate. At the same time they thought to have Vixen LPR (a studbook riding type) re-evaluated for Star as a jumper type. Two tiny problems with this plan Vibrant had not jumped at all and Vixen had only been jumping under saddle for a short time. Nancy and Richard decided to turn to their keuring friends at Sakura Hill Farm for help. Monica Sakurai and her working student Kasey got these two mares ready for the keuring in a mere THREE weeks! Vibrant LPR received her Keur and Vixen LPR her Star! Supported by her parents, Monica also put together a team of helpers, from grooms to photographers, to get everything and anything done. Besides riding Nancy s two mares, Monica also rode her own: Ana Bella (Condios x Ekstein) competed in the Iron Spring Farm Cup for 5 year olds and scored a 76. The judges commented that in their minds, they thought that she has the perfect front end technique. She scored an 8.5 for reflexes and 8 for scope. Vibrant LPR (Orame x Wellington) owned by Nancy Debosek received her Keur predicate after a successful Jumper IBOP with the score of 78. Vibrant, formerly a Dressage horse, has been in training to prepare for her IBOP during the last month. Our rider Kasey Bedard did a fantastic job of riding the test and her efforts were rewarded with an Orange ribbon and the ribbon for Best Jumper Mare of the Keuring. Vixen LPR (Goodtimes x Gastronom) owned by Nancy Debosek received her Ster predicate after being awarded 8 s for reflexes through the free jumping chute. Vixen, also formerly a Dressage horse, has been with us since April 2010, with a brief intermission. Monica graduated in May, 2009, from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts as a Biology major with the goal of going to vet school to become an equine repro vet with a specialty in genetics. At Mount Holyoke, she competed in the Intercollegiate Open Division on the Hunt Seat Equitation team and consistently went to the Zone 4 Regionals. 16 2010 NORTH AMERICAN KEURING HARNESS HORSES On September 10, the combined KWPN-NA and ADHHA inspection took place in Sullivan Ohio. This was the fifth time that the KWPN-NA keuring for harness horses was organized by the American Dutch Harness Horse Association. ADHHA is a studbook that is primarily used for Amish breeders to register KWPN hybrids. The jury, consisting of the Deborah P. Harrison and René van der Kuil, judged the KWPN-NA inspection consisting of ten older foals, three mares and several IBOPs. There were about 60 horses for inspection in the ADDHA. The interest again was huge for both the keuringen and the auction. Fargo Foal Champion Eight out of ten foals were awarded with a first premium and the colt Fargo (Whiskei lic. x Bayjour by Jonker x Fabricius pref) o/b Steve Graber, was the champion. Fargo was the youngest foal and somewhat shortcoupled qua conformation. He showed well in movement and rose in the forehand. The trot was characterized by balance and action. Reserve Champion was First Class, also a son of the Patijn son Whiskei lic., who was the sire of six of the foals. First Class, o/b Aristocrat Stables, is out of the Canadian Hackney mare Goddess (s. Canadance) and was expressive with respect to front Anna, photo by Amish Country Images and flexibility in trot. Also in third place was another Whiskei son, F Lone Ranger, o/b Alva Graber. The mother is Sadinkie star (Ureterp x Majesty) from the Tinkie mare line. Apart from Whiskei foals, there were foals by Jonker and Moneymaker. Anna Champion Three were older mares for studbook. All were entered into the book, and were star, of which one was eligible for keur, the five-year-old Anna (Manno keur x Tina star by Renovo pref x Fortissimo) b. Erin La Croix and o. Noah Swartz, who left a big impression. Even as a foal she was very special and at the keuring in Kentucky, Kees van der Maat and Roelof van t Oever tried their best to take Anna to the Netherlands. Anna is not that big and her back is a little weak, but these are the only flaws. Mother Tina was a two-year-old champion of National Harness Day. 17 of refinement and expression. Her long neck is carried well and she comes back in the front beautifully. At the trot she occasionally held back, but there were times that she showed great. She was honored as champion of the inspection. Slightly less qua front but even stronger in movement was the fouryear-old Bestorita, b. Bruce Ekstrom and o. Myron Miller. Her father is the Hackney stallion Makari Extra Ordinary and she is out of Lorton daughter Silondra who is out of the keur sport mare Ilona (Renovo pref x Wouter). Bestorita is a Register A mare and when she meets the additional conditions she can enter the book will receive the star predicate. The 9-yearold Uphomeena (Patijn x Phenomeen ster by Kentuckyboy x Waterman pref) b. Dean Wikel and o. Alan Graber received a second premium. This mare could be a little more longlined, but did not qualify for star because of her movement. Debbie Egan presented Anna and Bestorita in the IBOP. Anna also showed well in harness but again was not quite ready. She received exactly 75 points and therefore went from foalbook to keur mare in a single day! Anna is in foal to Jonker. Bestorita was not as convincing in harness, especially with respect to front. Her movement was also not as impressive as when shown in-hand. Her total score was 73.5 points. Two other mares performed very enjoyable IBOPs. Ray Yoder drove the six-yearold black mare Zimone (Roy M x Primone keur by Renovo x Ureterp) bred by Jan Thijs and owned by David Beachy and Joe Mast. Primone, is a full sister to the watchlist stallion Seinman and to the mother of Vaandrager HBC. With three 8½ s and three 8 s, Approved stallion Jonker was presented in very good condition. The now 19-year-old Jonker (s. Renovo) was one of the first harness horse stallions imported to the U.S. Ron and Debbie Egan, are now the proud owners. Photo by René van der Kuil. her total score was 82½ points. Half a point more went to Tidee (Jonker x Nidee keur by Cambridge Cole x Oriant) owned by Rosewood Farms, N. Butler and K. Frazier. Debbie Egan drove the cheeky mare who had a very attractive front and use of the foreleg. She showed strength and bend behind, but the hind leg could be brought underneath a little quicker. Interest in the Dutch harness horse is still great. Occasionally there are still harness horses leaving the Netherlands for the U.S., although the breeding program is now largely self-sufficient. Interest in joining with the KWPN-NA seems to be growing. It appears the trend is now that the better KWPN mares are being used with approved KWPN stallions to produce purebred KHH horses. 18 SEXING EMBRYOS PRIOR TO TRANSFER Breeders would often like to know the sex of an upcoming foal for many reasons. Perhaps they are looking to breed a replacement mare or stallion from bloodlines selected. Or they might have a sale of a particular foal in-utero if it is the correct sex. Perhaps the mare had produced nothing but colts and it would be useful to know if the next embryo was going to be a filly or a colt before transplanting into a recipient. VETERINARY Currently there are only a few ways to influence the gender of a foal. Prior to breeding, one can try to use timing to swing the chances in one direction or another. For example, in one interesting observation of wild horses, mares that were gaining weight when bred produced male offspring 80 percent of the time. If they were losing weight when bred, they produced males only three percent of the time. Scientific studies in France and New Zealand with horses have shown a similar trend. Mares in poor condition when bred produced more female offspring than when fat. It makes sense that nature would encourage the production of females in lean times, when the herd may be losing individuals. Some species of animals even have the ability to change the sex of their unborn offspring in response to environmental pressures. For example, certain species of fish and reptiles have the ability to change the sex in the embryonic form in response to environmental influences such as temperature. Although gender is determined by which chromosomes are inherited, both males and females develop the same in the early stages of embryonic growth, when the sex organs are rudimentary and neither female nor male. At a certain stage, a gene activates to cause the embryo to develop as a male or as a female, based on a number of factors including hormone production. In these other species, the environment can influence that development in one direction or another. It is nature s way of ensuring that a species will continue to survive in adverse conditions. Therefore, timing breeding to a stage when a mare is gaining or losing weight may have an impact. However, the accuracy rate certainly may be suspect. Timing of ovulation is another means of trying to influence the gender of a foal. Some people swear by breeding early in the estrus cycle to produce a filly and later in the cycle to produce a colt. Again, there is no sure way to select for the gender of a foal using this method. Sex-selected semen is now a reality in the horse world and breeders can have semen from any stallion sorted into X or Y chromosome doses. The success rate of this method is over 95 percent, making it the most reliable way of producing a foal of the desired sex prior to breeding. Determining sex of the embryo What if you simply wanted to know the sex of the foal before it is born, regardless of whether anything was done to produce a foal of a specific gender? Ultrasound examination of the fetus can determine the sex of the foal by identifying the genital tubercle. This structure becomes the penis in the colt and the clitoris in the filly. At around day 55 the tubercle migrates toward the umbilical cord in the colt and toward the tail in the filly. Therefore, it is best to wait until around days to check fetal gender. After about 75 days the fetus starts to be pulled over the pelvic brim and it becomes too difficult to reach to do the ultrasound properly; then at days the fetus can be visualized again depending on the position. A veterinarian who is skilled in fetal gender determination via ultrasound can have a high success rate over 90 percent. However, like other methods of determining the sex of a foal, it is not 100 percent successful and depends on the skill of the technician. Sexing embryos before transfer The first foal born from an embryo that was sexed before implantation was born in January 2010 in Wisconsin through the work of Minitube International. The foal, called Biopsita, was known to be a filly before she was born, as a small sample of the embryo had been taken and tested before being implanted into the recipient mare. The successful birth of Biopsita has opened a new door for breeders who wish to know the sex of an embryo before transfer. What is much more exciting from a breeder s perspective is that certain genetic diseases can be screened for at the same time. by Cindy Reich Page 18 Newsletter of the KWPN-NA

19 While some may argue the ethics of selecting genetically clean embryos, is it not better to know before putting a foal on the ground whether it is carrying a genetic disease? From the standpoint of a breeder, buyer, and seller, this is valuable information. Dr. Fernando Campos-Chillon of Equine reproductive Innovations in Wellington, Colorado did pre-transfer biopsies of embryos for research and development in 2009, and commercially for a breeding season in Argentina with polo ponies. Now, in 2010, Dr. Campos-Chillon will be offering embryo screening to his clients. I spoke with him regarding fetal gender determination as will as genetic and sex screening of embryos prior to transfer. What age is best for doing fetal gender determination in horses via ultrasound? Sixty to 70 days. Does the type of ultrasound machine make any difference or is accuracy based more on the experience of the veterinarian? More sophisticated ultrasound machines provide better image resolution and sensitivity. The experience of the veterinarian is extremely important. My training started doing fetal sexing in cattle (Over 25,000 scans). The transition to the horse was relatively simple. My accuracy rate is close to 96 percent. Rarely do I have to reexamine a fetus unless the position is inadequate for good visualization. Has anyone else done sexing embryos prior to transfer on a commercial basis? Different groups (Texas A&M, Colorado State University and Minitube) started working with this technology in However, to my knowledge, Equine Reproductive Innovations is the first facility that is offering this type of service commercially. Embryo screening is quite common in cattle. How difficult is sampling an equine embryo compared to a bovine embryo? In cattle the procedure is relatively simple if performed by a trained embryologist. Hundreds of thousands of sexed cattle embryos have been transferred worldwide, especially in the dairy industry. In the horse, due to the unique physiology of embryonic development in the uterus, embryonic migration, and encapsulation of the embryo, micro-manipulation tools and a sophisticated microscope are necessary for success. What other genetic information can you get from the sample you take from the embryo for sexing? Since publication of the equine genome and new molecular biology techniques, the information that can be obtained from embryo biopsy samples can be extremely broad from gender determination to genetic diseases to coat color. In the future SNIPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) will help breeders to do genetic selection for the traits they consider important. This technology is already available to the dairy industry and the Black Angus breed of cattle. How risky is it to the embryo to take a sample? What is the best age to flush an embryo if you wish to screen it? In our research and field studies with over 70 embryo transfers, the pregnancy rates at day 60 were nine percent lower with sampled embryos than intact ones- 86 percent with intact embryos vs. 75 percent with biopsied embryos. The sensitivity of the genetic analysis was 93 percent: In other words, we were able to determine the gender of the embryo 93 percent of the time. The embryos should be flushed between 6.5 to 7.5 days post-ovulation (<500 microns in size). Embryos bigger than day eight become problematic due to their size relative to the micro-tools. The past few years have been extraordinary for the progress of technology in equine reproduction. Breeders and owners now have the ability to access hitherto unavailable information regarding genetic screening and sex selection. 20 KWPN TOPS JUMPING/DRESSAGE RANKINGS Totilas and Hickstead Lead Individual WBSH/FEI Rankings In October the WBFSH has announced its new rankings. For the second consecutive year, the KWPN is the number one studbook for both dressage horses and jumpers, maintaining its position from last year. Perhaps even more special is the fact that two KWPN horses lead the individual rankings again. Last year s leaders were the Olympic champion Hickstead and the rising star Jerich Parzival, and this year s top horses are Hickstead again and Moorland s Totilas! Three Times a Charm for Hickstead The KWPN studbook leads the jumper rankings for the seventh consecutive year. The top studbooks are closely ranked, with the KWPN just ahead of the Holstein studbook, and the Selle Francais studbook in third. The top six horses from each studbook in the individual rankings count toward the studbook rankings. For the third consecutive year, Hickstead (Hamlet x Jomara ster pref prest by Ekstein, breeder: Jan van Schijndel) is the world s top jumper. His achievements include victories in Calgary and Aachen. The Corland daughter Silvana de Hus (out of Donate keur prest by Widor) is third in the individual ranking. Bred by B.J. ter Denge, the mare s current rider is Kevin Staut. The pair s accomplishments this year include a second in the Grand Prix of Gijon and a tie for seventh in the Geneva World Cup final. Urico, ridden by Mario Deslauriers of the U.S., is the next horse to count in the rankings. In April, they excelled in the Geneva World Cup final, where they bested their competition in the interim standings before ending in sixth place. With achievements such as a Grand Prix win in Wellington and second place in La Baule, the Zandor Z son (out of Omara s.fedor, breeder: J. Dings) finished in 11th place individually. Taloubet Z (Galoubet x Krista ster sport/sp by Polydor, breeder: C.T. Klaver) and Christiaan Ahlmann make a good team. A victory in Hannover and two third places in Valkenswaard and Estoril, among other accomplishments, earned the talented jumper enough points for 22nd place. Van Grunsven Simon (Mr. Blue x Naline ster by Polydox, breeder: M.J. Vermeulen) excels with Jeroen Dubbeldam. His spectacular win at Spruce Meadows, in particular, earned him enough points for 25th place. The last horse to count for the KWPN is Exquis Powerfee. Although the Fedor son (out of Toverfee prest by Erdball xx, breeder: P.L. van der Voort) has not yet won a major Grand Prix, he earned many points for the KWPN with his consistently high placings. He ranks 30th individually. And then there is Totilas The KWPN is the number one studbook in the WBFSH dressage rankings for the second consecutive year. Individual leaders are Moorland s Totilas and Jerich Parzival. With Ravel in fourth place and four KWPN horses among the top ten, the studbook ranks well ahead of its competition. The Hanoverian studbook is second, followed by the Oldenburg studbook. After a fantastic early season in which Totilas won the World Cup and all the main classes in Aachen, the Gribaldi son (out of Lominka elite pref prest by Glendale, breeders: J.K. Schuil and A. Visser) captured three gold medals in grand style at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. His point total puts him well ahead of the number two horse, Parzival. Parzival beat his competition in Stockholm, Mechelen, Göteburg, Den Bosch, and Hickstead, and he finished second in the World Cup final in Las Vegas and in Aachen. Unfortunately, he did not earn any points at the World Equestrian Games as he was eliminated for blood in his mouth due to having bitten his tongue. Even so, he had enough points to rank second. Ravel had a limited competition schedule this year. In the pursuit of just one goal the WEG in Kentucky, where he won two bronze medals. the Contango son did not defend his World Cup title Notwithstanding, Ravel, ridden by Steffen Peters, earned enough points for an admirable fourth place in the individual ranking. KWPN stallion IPS Painted Black (Gribaldi x Litchy elite pref prest sport/dr by Ferro, breeders: Frank van de Valk and Jacqueline Anholt) finished fourth. With Anky van Grunsven, the Gribaldi son won in Falsterbo and placed high in Göteborg and Amsterdam. He ranks eighth individually. The last two horses to contribute to the KWPN s number one ranking competed very little this year. Bred by Gerard Vervoorn, Exquis Nadine (T.C.N. Partout x Charites ster pref prest by Roemer) had a light schedule under Hans Peter Minderhoud. However, when she did compete, she scored high. 21 and a spot in the WEG in Kentucky. She ranks 18th individually. KWPN stallion Scandic is the last horse to earn points. Ridden by Patrick Kittel, the Solos Carex son (out of Noraline elite by Amiral, breeder: Ineke Mosman-Rohé) consistently scores high. His achievements include a fifth place finish in the World Cup final and two seconds in Göteborg. His results earned him enough points for 19th place in the individual ranking. Eventing The Hanoverian studbook leads the eventing ranking, with the Irish Sport Horse studbook on its heels. In third place is the Selle Francais studbook, and the KWPN is ninth. The first four horses contributing to the KWPN s ninth place ranking are Drivetime (Rolls Royce x Etronora s.zuidhorn, breeder: J. 22 2010 WILLY ARTS GRANTS CLARE KRSKA In March 2010 I learned that I was a lucky recipient of the Willy Arts Grant. I was very excited because my Dutch mare, Romincka, and I had high hopes for the year. After spending the winter training flying changes, we Clare and Romincka, photo Carol Krska finally were ready to compete in the FEI JR classes and try to qualify for the NAJYRC. A fair portion of the grant went to qualifying shows. During this time period, I learned how difficult the FEI JR tests were compared to Third Level. I ended up being the only Junior rider from Region 4 qualifying. I was placed on a mixed team consisting of myself and three other fabulous girls from Region 3. I was so excited to go to NAJYRC. Before we could arrive in Kentucky though, I represented Region 4 at the National Dressage Seat Medal finals at the Lamplight Equestrian Center. This was an experience like none other. Riding in a ring with five judges watching you for an hour takes more energy than any dressage test. I was thrilled to find that Romincka and I had placed in the top 5. We then went into the ring where they announced the actual placings. I couldn t believe it, I was the National Seat Medal Champion! We had to pack up quickly while celebrating because we were due to arrive in Kentucky the next day. I met my team and we settled into Kentucky without any problems. Riding at the Kentucky Horse Park, which was almost fully prepared for the WEG, was an amazing experience. My team ended up with bronze, I got 6th in the individual test and 10th in the musical freestyle. I was elated. Clare and Romincka, photo Carol Krska The 2010 competition year was definitely a successful one thanks to the Willy Arts Grant. In addition to the lifetime of good memories, I met so many new people, including Willy Arts himself. The connections I made will stay with me through the years as I continue to develop my dressage career. Also, these experiences add to my resume which is allowing me more opportunities to expand upon my dressage education. For example, I was selected to ride in a clinic with Jan Ebeling in December. I m very grateful that I was selected to receive this grant and would recommend it to all Junior and Young Riders in the future. Willy Arts Grant Follow-up: I heard about the grant program through the KWPN website and magazine. This award benefited me greatly. It aided me in attending the NAJYRC at Kentucky Horse Park and the Dressage Seat Medal Finals at Lamplight. The things I learned in preparing for these events have made me a better rider and educated me in dressage further. I would absolutely recommend the Willy Arts Grant to another Young Rider. JACLYN SILVER When I found out that I was one of three winners for the Willy Arts Young Rider Grant I couldn t stop smiling for days, and had shortly formulated a plan for my-self and my new handsome Dutch Warmblood Uranus (Farrington x Jameela by Roemer, bred by Joe Snyder of HHH Ranch). But does anything ever go as planned? Not usually, especially when it comes to horses. Page 22 Newsletter of the KWPN-NA

23 Jaclyn and Cooper, photo Nyk Tripp A little about Cooper (his new barn name) and I, He was actually gifted to me by his breeder in January of I was over the moon! I had known and ridden this horse for almost two years prior and couldn t possibly think of ever parting with him. Then to be selected to win the grant was a great start to our year, and our partnership. However around March we found that Cooper was staring to get stiff and sore and cranky about working. The soreness was obviously in his back. The more I asked for better work, the worse it got. Making a long story short, my vet and I concluded that his SI (sacroiliac) joint was very sore. Which, in turn, was affecting his low back, all the way up to his neck and left front leg. After a bit more digging into his past, we found that he had also previously injured his low back as a youngster and this current issue was more than likely a re-injury. I have been determined to make sure that this never happens again. Unfortunately, all this meant rest and hand walking for Cooper and no shows or clinics for the both of us. So we have spent the last eight months in recovery and reconditioning mode. Cooper is improving quickly and is back to building up his muscles. Along with this reconditioning Cooper has developed more confidence and trust in me and our partnership. This was my entire original goal when I applied for the grant. I think that next year will be amazing for us, as he and I continue to improve. The KWPN-NA has been gracious enough to let me continue using the grant through the next show year till it is all spent, as I have barley spent any of it this last year. I want to thank the KWPN-NA for this amazing opportunity and introduction to the breed registry. Also Mr. Willy Arts for choosing me, and Little Creek Farm for their generous sponsorship and for making all of this possible. I am so excited to have a horse of this magnificent breed and to be a part of this grant (for two years!) and the registry. See you all next year!! LAUREN GRIFFIN After Lauren and Fascination (aka Funnest) were announced as one of the winners of the 2010 Willy Arts Grants, her horse became lame and the pair was unable to compete. As a result Lauren was not able to receive the grant money. We wish her the best and if she is able to find another KWPN partner, we hope she will re-apply for the Grant. WILLY ARTS GRANT Once again, the KWPN-NA is excited to offer the Willy Arts Grants for Young Riders sponsored by Little Creek Farm. In 2011, the grants have been increased to $3,000 each. These grants are intended to recognize and aid in the development of top performing KWPN-NA horse/rider combinations in a Young Rider division. Eligibility: Rider The applicant must be a current KWPN-NA member (any type), between the ages of 16 and 21, and be competing on a KWPN registered horse in a recognized Young Rider program. Horse The horse must be KWPN registered and have papers on file at the KWPN-NA office. If not owned by the competitor, the KWPN-NA office must have a current lease on file. Ownership The current owner must be owner of record on the registration paper on file. If the competitor leases the horse, the owner does not need to be a current member. Winners may use funds to cover lesson or clinic fees, competition fees for Young Rider Finals, or for educational seminars or demonstrations. Young Riders meeting the eligibility requirements may submit an application for the grant to the KWPN-NA office on or before February 28th of each calendar year. Grant recipients will be chosen by Mr. Willy Arts. Selections will notified after the KWPN-NA Annual Meeting in March of each year. 26 SPORT RESULTS IRON SPRING FARM STALLION OFFSPRING WIN MEDALS AT WEG RAVEL: GRAND PRIX HORSE OF THE YEAR Offspring Win Eight Medals at the World Equestrian Games At the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY, Iron Spring Farmowned stallions Contango, Glendale, Roemer and Sir Sinclair sired two sons, a grandson and a granddaughter that won eight medals in two sports. Sires Contango Contango has produced many international competitors. With rider Steffen Peters, son Ravel (out of Hautain by Democraat,bred by H. de Man and owned by Akiko Yamazak) anchored the US Dressage Team at the WEG with a % in the Grand Prix, a % in the Special (for individual bronze) and 84.90% in the Freestyle (good for another individual bronze). Sir Sinclair Sir Sinclair may best be known for producing top dressage horses, but his seven-year-old old son Whooper (out of Kethling ster by Fruhling, bred by A.C.G Smits and owned by Ijsbrand Chardon) was driven at the WEG by IJsbrand Chardon to two medals in the Four-In-Hand Combined Driving. As part of the Dutch team, Whooper and Chardon won the team gold plus earned the individual silver medal. Individual Gold in the Special with an 85.70% and Individual Gold in the Freestyle with 91.80%. Totilas was owned by Tosca and Kees Visser at the time of the WEG. Glendale stood at Iron Spring Farm from 1994 until his death in Roemer Roemer, a USDF Hall of Fame inductee, was the grandsire of medal winning dressage horse - Exquis Nadine (TCN Partout out of Charities, breeder C. Vervoorn and owner A.M Kies). The elegant mare, helped the Dutch team secure their gold medal with a score of 72.25% in the Grand Prix. Contango, Glendale, Roemer and Sir Sinclair allcompeted in the U.S. and spent the better part of their breeding careers at Iron Spring Farm. The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) named the twelve-yearold, 16.3 hand, Dutch Warmblood gelding, Ravel, owned by Akiko Yamazaki of Woodside, California, and ridden by Steffen Peters of San Diego, California, as the 2010 Adequan/USDF Grand Prix Horse of the Year. Ravel s median score of percent made him the top horse in the United States competing at this level and the recipient of USDF s highest honor for the second year in a row. Ravel, represented by owner Akiko Yamazaki, was recognized at the 2010 Adequan/USDF Salute Gala and Annual Awards Banquet. Ravel is also, the recipient of the Colonel Thackeray Award and will have his name engraved on a silver trophy to be on permanent display in the Roemer Foundation/USDF Hall of Fame housed at the USDF National Education Center, located at the Kentucky Horse Park. 28 KWPN NEWS KWPN Center in Ermelo will be ready in 2010 The KWPN has had a long-standing goal of acquiring its own equestrian center where it can host events such as sales, auctions, the performance test, and the mare tests - and properly receive its foreign guests. Recently, the KWPN decided to begin construction on a center on the grounds of the existing federation center in Ermelo, the venue for the KWPN Horse Days event. The new KWPN Center is scheduled to open in First Round Stallion Selections As in past years, the first round viewing of young stallions was held in Ermelo. Of the 700 stallions entered in the selection, 182 were selected to go to Den Bosch. In total 118 young jumping stallions and 58 young dressage stallions were selected for the second round in Den Bosch. With three older jumpers, two older dressage and the Thoroughbred Hopalong Cassidy xx, the number comes to 182. This means that 36% of the jumping stallions presented and 29% of the dressage stallions presented will go on to the next round. Berlin had the highest number (nine) of jumper offspring in the second round, followed by Canturano (six), Cardento (five), Mr. Blue (five), Vigaro (five), Indoctro (four), Lucky Boy (four) and Whitaker (also four). For the dressage stallions Vivaldi is the highest with five offspring, followed by Jazz (four), Wynton (four) and Westpoint (three) 2011 KWPN Stallion Show in s-hertogenbosch This year s KWPN Stallion Show will be held February 2-5, 2011 in s- Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. The event includes KWPN College for foreign visitors, the 2nd and 3rd round viewings of approximately 250 young stallions, exhibitions by already approved stallions from the jumping-, dressage-, harness-, and Gelder horse breeding directions, and more! Of course, the KWPN Select Sale - an elite auction - will follow the KWPN Stallion Show, and a special Guided Tour will wrap up the entire event. Eleven Sallions Approved Fall of 2010 KWPN Approves Eleven Stallions after Fall Test During the final exam in Stegeren the KWPN announced the approval of eleven stallions - six jumping, four dressage and one Gelders. With 84.5 points, the 4-year-old Bretton Woods (Johnson x De Niro) was the top scoring dressage stallion of the test, while Falaise de Muze (Wandor van de Mispelaere x Nabab de Reve) was the top scoring jumper with 84 points. 29 FROM THE REGISTRATION DESK There are a couple of things we would like to bring to your attention. and we would like to take this opportunity to get this information to our members. The first is a change in DNA testing procedures for our Canadian breeders. As you all know DNA parentage verification is part of the registration process. Due to problems caused by inconsistency in getting results and the often-long time lag with results from the lab in Canada, we can no longer accept DNA done in Canada. We are committed to registering foals in a timely fashion and that time lag has presented problems for keuring, shows & sales. Therefore, henceforth all DNA parentage verification pertaining to the registration of a foal will need to go through UC Davis via the KWPN-NA office. Second, pertains to a horse s markings and color. When taking the photos for registration please be sure to take the photos on a flat surface, clear of debris in natural (daylight) or welllighted area so that the foal s true color & markings may be seen clearly. When printing the foal s photos, please make sure that your printer is printing properly and shows your foal s true color. The office will request additional photos if the foal s color is in question. The office generally follows the Jockey Club markings and colors guide, and might change markings and/or color of a foal accordingly. As always, we would be more than happy to re-print your foal s papers to update its markings or color, you will need to provide the office with new photos (showing the markings/color clearly), the original papers and the $15.00 re-print fee. You may also choose to wait until the three year old studbook inspection for your horse and the KWPN-NA jury can update your horse s color at that time. Lastly, mailing of registration papers. In some instances registration papers have been lost in the mail. If you have not received your horse s registration papers in a timely fashion please be sure to contact the office. For foals, the registration process can vary, but if all paperwork & DNA is in order, the entire process should take around 2 months. For Transfer of Ownership, if all paperwork is in order, the turn-around time is usually 3-4 weeks. The time to process Duplicate registration papers may vary depending on whether the horse is on file with the KWPN-NA office or if they must be requested from the KWPN in Holland. Registration papers being updated due to Keuring generally ship from the office in November of the Keuring year. Papers are normally mailed out by standard first class mail. The KWPN-NA office does offer special mailing options for registration papers: certified mail in the U.S. for $5.00, registered mail to Canada for $15.00, or three-day express saver courier service in the U.S. for $25.00 and to Canada for $ If you have a courier service account, you can also send us that information to use. If you would like your registration papers shipped faster, additional fees will be required. If you choose to use standard first class mail, you will be responsible for any potential loss. 30 KWPN 2010 SPRING PERFORMANCE TEST Three young jumpers, five young dressage stallions and two harness horses were accepted into the studbook besides the four older stallions that were Erkend or approved earlier this spring SPRING TEST Jumpers Eldorado van de Zeshoek (Clinton x Toulon) and Spartacus (Stakkato x Grannus) participated in the 21-Day Test. Both stallions were erkend with high scores, respectively 87.5 and 86.5 points. Eldorado van de Zeshoek received no less than a 9.5 for scope and nines for reflexes and talent for jumping. Spartacus received nines for reflexes, scope and talent for jumping. Of the seventeen 3-year-old jumpers that started the test, three were approved. Dressage Of the eleven dressage stallions that started the test, five participated in the final exam. All five passed the exam. The highest score went to Charmeur (Florencio x Trendy elite by Jazz) bred by Huub van Helvoirt. The four-year old Bon Bravour (Painted Black x Odette keur pref by Chronos) was also approved. Harness Four harness stallions participated in the final exam, of which two were accepted into the studbook. Cizandro (Waldemar x Uizandra ster by Manno) and Crescendo HBC (Wodka HBC x Landini ster pref by Fortissimo) were both very convincing, especially Cizandro who received a top score with all nines and a 9.5 for self carriage. Gelders Gelders breeding has been enriched by approval of the seven-year old ZZ-light dressage stallion Wilson (s. Koss, formerly known as Widor). Wilson is a full brother to Vasco, who was previously selected for a performance test. Painted Black has been successful at international dressage with Anky van Grunsven. Dam Odette is a daughter of Chronos, who also had a successful sport career. She is a keur preferent mare that was the reserve champion at the Central Keuring in Brabant and who finished at the top at the National Mare Show. Besides Bon Bravour she also produced a Z dressage horse by Ferro, a NMS mare by Ferro, an elite mare with a good test by Jazz and a second ring stallion also by Jazz. Grandmother Hinsley is ster and brings Anglo/Arab blood through Linards x. The mare line then continues with the mare Christel, a keur daughter of Souvenir, and herself a champion of the CK in the province of Noord Brabant. It then continues with Velibor, a preferent prestatie mare by Doruto, who is also the dam of the Grand Prix dressage horse Joy (s. Ulft) and a ster mare by Frappant. Conformation: A very well developed stallion with a good dressage model. The head is expressive. The neck has good length and the muscling comes from deep in the chest. The wither is very well developed with good length. The shoulder has good length and position. The back has good length and muscling. The croup has good length, position and muscling. The foreleg has more than sufficient length with a somewhat straight pastern. The hindleg is correct. The base is more than sufficiently developed and has more than sufficient quality. The feet are more than sufficiently developed. Test report: Bon Bravour is an honest, reliable stallion with a good attitude. The stallion is very willing to work and he works well. The walk is pure with good scope but should show more activity. The trot has more than sufficient to good scope. The hindleg bends well and comes underneath well, but should be a fraction quicker.
