By Adrian & Rachel Whiting and Cheryl O Brien With the Hanoverian Verband inviting 2 representatives from each daughter society or international breeding club worldwide, the HHSA decided to send it s President, Cheryl O Brien and Vice President, Adrian Whiting. Since the Registrar didn t need an extra room, Rachel Whiting (Adrian s wife) also tagged along. The Verband was very gracious with their hospitality making it easy for us to see all that we wanted in the very short time we were in Germany (6 days from landing to take off), as well as informative, willing to discuss Adrian and Rachel at the Celle Gateway new ideas and the direction for Hanoverian Horses in the future. Day one saw us land in Bremen at 8am where, as it was a free day, we had arranged with new State Stud Celle s Assistant Manager, Maria Hansen to view a number of horses. Our first stop was the Stallion performance testing station and breeding station at Adelheidsdorf, where we viewed the cross country course, riding halls, walkers, stables and Cheryl and Rotspon breeding area, and had the stallions Fuerst Nymphenburg (Florestan/De Niro/Argentinus) and Don Presidente (Dauphin/Fabriano/Argentinus) who were 1 st and 2 nd respectively in the Celle performance test, presented to us. We were then privileged to have Rascalino, Londontime, Londonderry, Dancier, Locksley II and Toronto ridden for our viewing pleasure. After spending some hours here looking at different stallions and seeing some other young stallions ridden, namely Earl Weltmeyer Clooney by Contender and Canturano II (Canturo/ Cantus/Madonna IV), we travelled to Celle where there was one of the many highlights of the trip, photos with Rotspon and Weltmeyer, as well as seeing many of the other famous influences of breeding, Espri, Wolkenstein II, Lauries Crusador, Pommery, Fabriano, etc etc A special treat was had when they brought Earl out under saddle for us (on the Celle sacred lawn shh ). He was huge, black and quite brilliant in his movement.

2 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 2 FIRST INTERNATIONAL MEETING 2008 Continued HVW Stallion No 20 The next day saw the first of our official days with the Verband, which was the first day of the Stallion Licensing. We saw all 101 young stallions presented on the triangle outside on the lawn. The 66 Dressage stallions came first, followed by the 45 jumpers. It was good to see that many of the jumpers also had above average movement and interesting to see the influence of the dam lines on the stallions presented. We had excellent seats, right next to the judges, so the stallions were stood up quite close to us (in fact some times too close for the zoom lenses we had on our cameras!) It was also nice to see the stallion No. 20 (Fidertanz/Donna Doria) owned by members Craig Perkins and Laura Summerhayes from Hunter Valley Warmbloods. He had a very expressive trot and was licensed the next day. On this evening we were invited to attend the Breeders dinner held at the Pferde Museum and were able to speak to local and international breeders. Free running and free jumping of the young stallions was the next day s program. The jumpers were quite amazing and, as on the day before, it was good to see some dressage stallions with good jumps. The jumping was interesting with some obviously overtrained horses asked to cease their presentation. It was good to see that the Verband wants to reward and breed on the natural rather than trained ability. It was the first time this year that lunging of the young stallions was offered on the morning of the auction in the Neidersachsenhalle. This gave interested buyers the chance to see their prospective stallions in training. Rachel, at this time, was picking out the stallions that she did not think would pass, looking (hypothetically only) for a potential riding gelding for Adrian. Remember good geldings come from gelding stallions, and that this is where Isabel Werth s world champion Satchmo was purchased. Presentation of the Premium Stallions came next with us going through our auction catalogue to see if our choices agreed with the judges. Stallion of the year was the next presentation and what a rewarding sire in De Niro. Many of his progeny came out to perform before his presentation, including Dancier Danone I and Danone II. De Niro also sired one of the Premium Judging walk on the ring Stallions Lot No. 12, a black stallion by (De Niro / Weltmeyer /Bolero) Breeder/Owner: Bianca Dr. Helmcke, Jameln. The purchaser was Paul Schockemoehle for De Niro was also the sire of licensed stallion Lot No. 11 (De Niro/Aarking xx/alonso), and was dam sire of Premium Stallion No. 62 a black stallion by Stedinger (De Niro / Rubinstein) Breeder: Reinhard Wilms GbR, Hinte, Owner: Dieter Kaufmann, Eppingen. He was purchased by Tailormade Horses Apes, Denmark for The judges discuss The Auction was exciting, especially when the 3 rd stallion in, Lot No. 3 a bay stallion by Belissimo M / Weltmeyer /Alonso, Breeder/Owner: Heinrich Giesselmann, Barver, sold to Blue Hors Stud, Denmark and Paul Schockemoehle, Muehlen (Lower Saxony) for This was the highest price of the auction with many after failing to reach , it seems the Hanoverian Verband is not immune to the effects of the current economic climate. Sunday saw us travelling to Hannover to see a day, again generously hosted by the Verband, at the German Classics. This is a major invitational show and was held in an indoor Exhibition centre, only taking up one large hall of the many at the venue. We arrived early to see the Quadrille competition and were not disappointed as we were able to see Rascalino perform and his team from the region of Hannover win the class! We also saw an invitational Kur with Olympic Gold Medalists Isabell Werth and Heike Kemmer (who was a judge at the stallion licensing in the days before) take first and second places. Joern Kubelke (our current visiting coach) and German based, Australian rider, Hayley Beresford were also invited to participate in the Kur. Rachel and Pommery

3 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 3 FIRST INTERNATIONAL MEETING 2008 Continued The rest of the day saw us watch the 4 in hand Driving competition (very exciting) with Australian Boyd Excell, based in the UK, only narrowly missing out on a place, and in the afternoon we were thrilled with the showjumping - fabulous in such a small ring. 30 showjumpers were invited and we were able to see the stallions Chacco-Blue (Contendor) and Catoki jump as well as progeny of Stakkato, Argentinus, Accord II, Tinka s Boy, Cassini, Calido and Come On. Australian James Patterson-Robinson competed well on his horse Lanosso, finishing 8 th from 34. The reason we came on the trip to Germany was to meet with the Verband for the inaugural International Meeting, and on Monday, our last day, we Fabriano did just that. The meeting was very valuable. Dr Schade opened the meeting stating it as a Meeting of historical importance. He then invited all guests to introduce themselves both as breeders and explaining their position in their Hanoverian Society and the Society s current situation. It turned out that two daughter societies had 3 representatives (USA & Australia) with the Canadian breeding club and the British daughter society sending 2 representatives, and all other Hanoverian breed clubs had 1 representative each. They were Russia, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Spain and France. New Zealand sent an apology and suggestions that were read out. We discussed many things, including ensuring all societies use the same breeding terminology so as to gain accurate statistics from each country; the forming of an international committee who will ultimately have a representative sit on the board of the Verband; the changing needs of breeders around the world and how we can service these needs; breeding policy and marketing; and training of breed judges worldwide. This gave us a number of avenues for further investigation and networks with other breed societies. The USA was forthcoming with many of their strategies including their recent establishment of a training facility identification program which could be beneficial for us to mirror in the future to help support members in the training of their horses at all levels. We presented our updated Marketing Report on powerpoint, which was very well received, and we had invitations from other daughter societies to come and work for them!! Everyone was very impressed with our hard work, and the consensus was that we are on the right track, and that we had many ideas for other societies to emulate in their own countries. We have come back to Australia with some great ideas from other societies that could work very well here in our country, and these ideas will be discussed and built on in coming months. It was agreed that there should be an International Meeting of all daughter Societies and Breed Clubs every 2 years, with the next one planned for Kentucky in With the progression of Hanoverians in Australia being the HHSA s foremost goal, there were many possibilities arising from this meeting to help us to achieve our marketing plan of 500 in 5. We were also assured that the plan we have undertaken so far is well supported by the Verband. Rotspon Leonie Fischer is nearly 16 years old who currently attends grammar school in Walsrode, Germany, 30 km from Verden. Her older brother, Felix, stayed in New Zealand with Hanoverian breeder, Carol Eivers, for one year on an exchange, and Leonie is wanting to do the same in Australia. She is an A level rider who recently was crowned the Champion Young Breeder in Verden, Germany this year. Leonie is able to assist with grooming and riding whilst attending school in Australia during her stay. If anyone can assist by hosting Leonie for the year, please contact Cheryl O Brien, President HHSA.

6 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 6 The Horseland 2008 EFA Australian Dressage Championships, was held from the 23 to the 26 October 2008 at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. The event showcased many of Australia s most talented dressage combinations, with Hanoverian bred horses dominating the event. Every class at the event, with the exception of the Grand Prix CDN, had either registered Hanoverians or horses by a licensed Hanoverian stallion place in the top ten, and, in some classes dominate the number of entries. Fantastic to see! Congratulations to all our Hanoverian owners, riders, sponsors and their horses on their performances. 8 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 8 On Monday the 8 th of December The 2009 Australian Youth Olympics Dressage team was selected. It is with great excitement that three out of the four young riders selected are Hanoverian members. The youth Olympics is held every four years and is a fantastic opportunity for our young up and coming riders to get a taste of what its like to be in International competition. The team consists of Robbie Soster, Gabriella Robson, Victoria Welch and the Reserve Jessica Robinson. Below is a brief outline of the Youth Olympics and an introduction to our young Australian riders. This event, the fifth held so far, is organized by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) for a number of Summer Olympic sports, with the support from the National Federations (NFs) and International Federations (IFs) involved. For the second time, Equestrian is represented in 2009 with the Disciplines of Dressage and Jumping. Up to seven Teams are invited including one Australian Team, with three riders per team in Dressage and four riders in Jumping. The AOC has invited New Zealand (NZL), Great Britain (GBR), Japan (JPN), Malaysia (MLA), Sweden (SWE) and United States of America (USA). The invitations have gone to the respective National Olympic Committees (NOCs), with copies to NFs. It appears that all invited nations will send teams. The mix of Teams has changed since Equestrian was last involved in the AYOF. Gabriella Robson My name is Gabriella Robson, although most people call me Bella and I'm a 16 year old from Western Australia. I have been competing purely in Dressage for the past two years, prior to which I competed in Show horse. My current competition horse is an imported Oldenburg gelding, Doncartier, by Donnerhall (S: Donnerwetter, D: Ninette), out of Highlight (S: Hitchcock, D: St. Pr. St.). He was purchased in April this year from an American lady who imported him as a foal. We have competed at Elementary and Medium level throughout the year at local competitions as well as in NSW at the Young Rider Championships and State Gabriella Robson and Doncartier Championships in July and September. In 2009 the plan is to compete at Advanced level and move up to Prix St George level as soon as possible, furthering both his and my education. Being relatively new to the dressage scene I have been amazed at the opportunities I have been lucky enough to take advantage of this year. A lot of which has been thanks to my position on the EFA WA State Young Rider Squad. Being placed on the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival long list has given me the opportunity to improve my riding dramatically over the three training clinics I have attended. The opportunity to ride and adjust to so many different horses in such a short space of time with an extremely experienced coach and mentor, Glennis Barry has been a huge learning curve for myself. The clinics were both physically and mentally tiring but definitely worth the while. Being selected as part of the Australian team is amazing and is sure the be a once in a lifetime experience. I feel very privileged to be included in a team of such experienced riders like Robbie Soster, Victoria Welch and Jess Robinson. They have all been so encouraging and supportive, and I think we will all make up a great team. Thank you to the EFA National and the Australian Olympic Committee for giving us this opportunity. I couldn't be more excited!!! Lastly I would like to thank Stable 8 and Evolution Equestrian for their much appreciated sponsorship, which has enabled me to travel so much this year, and for their continuous support of both me and my horse." Robbie Soster Nineteen year old Robbie Soster has been a member of the Hanoverian Society since the beginning of Two overseas trips, one to the World Equestrian Games in 2006, and the other, a four-month stay in Germany in 2007 looking for a new horse, fuelled her interest in the Hanoverian breed. Her success in the dressage field, and love of this discipline began at 12 with a 14.3hh cremello gelding, Robali Irish Cream. Undertaking regular training with Miguel Tavora and her mum, Ali Soster she trained from Novice through to most of the Grand Prix movements with many championships and awards including twice NSW YR of the Year. Robbie Soster and Razzamatazz

9 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e Australian Youth Olympics Dressage Team Continued Leaving school at the end of 2006, Robbie chose to join her mother in running an agistment, training and coaching centre in the Southern Highlands of NSW, where she is training horses for clients and working towards her NCAS EFA Level One. Her friends and sponsors, Nick Kroopin and Regina Brandt have assisted her in her search for a new mount, and shared in the purchase of 2 imported Hanoverian geldings from Kerry Mack of Mayfield Farm in Victoria. Razzamatazz (Rotspon/Cavalier) arrived at the beginning of 2008 and went on to YR State Elementary Champion 2008, NSW State Elementary Champion and a 3 rd and 5 th in the Elementary classes at the Nationals. He is also scoring over 65% in his Medium work. Viviano (Warkant/Lanthan) arrived in June and four advanced competitions later had qualified for a start at the Nationals in October where he earned a super 2 nd in the Adv 5.3. He now has the points to compete at PSG and is certainly an exciting prospect for the future and ready to compete in the YR tour. Her selection to represent Australia in the Australian Youth Olympics is the highlight of There is no doubt that international competition and the Olympics is a long-term goal so the opportunity to participate in this event in Jan 2009 is very, very exciting! Victoria Welch My name is Victoria Welch; I m 19 years old and I live in Queensland. I am a member of the Queensland Performance Squad and the National Young Rider Squad. I have weekly training which Thomas Muehlenbeck, and three monthly clinics with international coach Jorne Kubelke. I currently compete three horses of which two are Hanoverians. A 9 yearold mare, Remi World Vision (Wolkenstein II / Remi Winter Solstice), currently competing Advanced / PSG, a 5 year-old gelding Brentanus (Brentano II / Whoopy K) who I imported earlier this year, competing Prelim / Novice, and an 8 year-old gelding BJ Kaneto Casablanca (BJ Kaneto Casanova/ Fransiska) competing Medium/Advanced. I am extremely Victoria Welch and Remi World Vision EM lucky to be mounted on such a fantastic horse. Earlier this year I was in Germany training with Jorne Kubelke, I also attended the 2008 Elite Hanoverian Auction, where I purchased Brentanus. Whilst at the auction I was able to ride many different Hanoverians, I am an enthusiastic young breeder and rider. I am currently working towards my NCAS EFA Level 1, I also work for our business, Beechwood Stud where we breed and train dressage horses. I am very generously sponsored by The Riders Shopee and Beechwood Stud. The three training clinics we attended throughout the selection process were extremely beneficial, as we had to ride many different horses in a short period of time. This helped all of us to adapt to how different horses worked. We were extremely lucky to have such an experienced rider and coach, Glennis Barry to help us along. Her guidance and encouragement has defiantly had a significant impact on the team. Glennis have been very generous in sharing her knowledge and expertise with us. Our selection for the 2009 Youth Olympic Festival is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I believe that this fantastic team will give it all we ve got and represent Australia to the best of our abilities. I know we are all extremely excited On behalf of the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Dressage team, Gabriella Robson, Robbie Soster, Jessica Robinson and myself we would like to thank Jenny Carol for all the time, effort and support she has put into this amazing opportunity for us to undertake. None of the would have been possible without the wonderful work of Glennis Barry, The EFA, The AOC, our generous parent, Jenny Carol and all the fantastic owners lending their horses. Best of luck to all those attending this fantastic event!! Jessica Robinson The Youth Olympics is a fantastic opportunity for young people between the ages of 16 and 19 to experience international competition, and in the case of the 2009 Olympics, to experience international competition on our home turf. The way in which the Youth Olympics is run is very different to anything I have experienced as it is run as a derby. It involves all the stresses of a normal competition, only with people from other countries competing, and riding through an FEI junior test (medium level) and a freestyle on a horse which you have only ridden for two to three days prior to the day competition.

10 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e Australian Youth Olympics Dressage Team Continued So, when the time came I put in my application hoping to be selected for this challenge. When the long list of 14 riders was named, training clinics were organised with Glennis Barrey as the coach. The first clinic was held towards the end of September. My preparation for this clinic was not the best as I had only been back riding for four weeks after fracturing four vertebrae in my back in July, and during the clinic I was very sick with (only after did I find this out) a middle ear infection and a throat infection. The clinic was over three days and involved having lessons on our own horses with Glennis, and then swapping horses with other riders. Glennis has an uncanny ability to see problems both with riders and horses and can explain the problems so simply which left me saying to myself why Jessica Robinson have I not tried that before?. This difference in my riding and the way I worked my horse after the clinic was immense, and I am sure the same can be said for the other riders at the clinic. The main selection clinic was held before the Australian National Championships at SIEC. Unfortunately I was unable to attend because I had to sit my final year 12 exams. Towards the end of November, the short list of six riders was named (Victoria, Robbie, Gabrella, Jess Willard, Sancha and myself). To be one of the short listed riders has very exciting. For the final clinic (which was held from the 5 to the 7 of December) the pressure was on. The focus of this clinic was not to ride other horses, but to design freestyles for the actual competition in January and to ride through the tests which we would be riding at the competition. We were very lucky to have the judge (Maria Schwennesen) fly down to judge us ride through the tests and to give us advice once we had finished. She offered a helpful insight into the way we should ride the tests. After this clinic, the actual team of four riders was announced: Victoria, Robbie, Gabriella and myself as the reserve. To be selected on a team to represent Australia while under the age of 20 is a fantastic achievement and opportunity. I learned so much from the training clinics, and got to know other young riders around Australia. I extend my deepest gratitude towards Jenny Carroll who has worked nonstop organising the clinics, and preparing for the competition in January; Glennis Barrey who has worked incredibly hard coaching at the clinic, the effort and passion she puts into it is amazing; and lastly, the riders, who have been very supportive and encouraging throughout the selection process. I wish the other three team members: Victoria, Robbie and Gabriella the best of luck at the competition, and I have no doubt that they will do Australia proud. 13 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 1 3 Although anyone who ventured to Equitana this year will tell you that the weather was terrible, it was a worthwhile exercise for the HHSA to be part of this large exhibition. The horse world in Victoria (and elsewhere considering many visitors are from out of state) appreciated the educational value of learning more about Hanoverian horses and their breeding. It is important to get our brand out there and have representation to explain what Hanoverian horses and their breeders are all about. In Victoria we have plans to expand our presence into other venues such as DJWTS, the State Championships, The Royal Summer Show etc. We met members from all the States, and New Zealand. They enjoyed telling us about their Hanoverians and what they were doing. It is exciting and fulfilling to share breeding and competition experiences with other members. We also identified many part Hanoverian horses that can be classified into our identification register, and Thoroughbred mares which could be classified and bred from. We also met a lot of people who thought they had a Hanoverian horse, but on examination of the bloodlines this was proven incorrect. Our goal for these exhibitions is to educate buyers so that they are not disappointed like these people, in the future. Our display horse was Reiner Kramer s import Cannavaro. As the breeder s stable was too small for a big horse like a Hanoverian, we used the Hanoverians that were competing and doing the master classes to showcase the breed. Reiner Kramer demonstrated Cannavaro for us on Sunday in the Bates Arena, and I was able to give a 10 minute talk to the small crowd about Hanoverians and the HHSA. It was a good opportunity for Reiner to warm up his horse, and we thank Reiner for his willingness to help out with the display. To sum up, the weather was shocking, and we were lucky that our stand was northfacing and we didn't cop the full brunt of it like the poor exhibitors in the south-facing stands,. Overall it was a huge success as a showcase for Hanoverian Horses. 16 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 1 6 Many Hanoverian Horses and their riders attended the recent Christoph Hess clinics held over 4 Australian states, organised by the EFA. Christoph is an FEI I level judge for both Dressage and Eventing and a sought after commentator for events such as the World Equestrian Games and World Young Horse Championships. For those of us who were able to hear Christoph talk and see him teach, it was inspiring to see his appreciation of quality horses, his overriding aim to keep the horse happy and to have the horse and rider as one harmonious package as well as his seemingly innate ability to find the best in every combination. This report is the combined effort of Nicole Tough from QLD Salute magazine, Nicola Turner from the EFA National Office, Rachel Whiting- HHSA with photos from Rachel Whiting and Sonja Risa. Thanks you also to Jessica Greelish and Kaz Roe from Qld and Chris Eales from WA for their input. Harmony between horse and rider was the theme of the day at Sydney s Christoph Hess Coaches and Judges Workshop on Tuesday 18 November. The structure of the day was to work with 9 horses and riders of various stages of training whilst discussing marks and training techniques with the judges and coaches. The Hanoverian participants were, Matthew Dowsley (Welton Fynne FF), Claire Siedl (Worldwide PB), Robbie Soster (Razzamattaz), Alexis Hellyer (Waca W) and Nicholas Fyffe(Fererro Rocher). Perhaps is the first thing that strikes you about Christoph is his positive attitude. Compliments about the quality of the riding and the horses were free flowing. When you see harmony ladies and gentlemen as judges use high marks. There was a constant reference to the riders positions which Christoph feels is essential to the training of a horse. Christoph explained that balance between horse and rider is most important. Balance and suppleness give you the best chance of success in your training resulting in consistency in your performances. Christoph approved of a lighter seat and shorter stirrups on the less experienced horses and explained that your seat and upper body position should vary not only on different horses but also within your work session on one horse depending on the horse s way of going. Lighten the pressure on the back of the young horse. The tempo is connected to the rhythm, forward but not running, says Christoph. The horse has to seek the contact and the rider must say You can accept it When looking at a young horse Keep a special eye on the hind legs. A clear even tempo with activity and suppleness is ideal. This horse is top class in the hind legs says Christoph about Welton Fynne FF ridden by Matthew Dowsley. Rarely in the world do you see better than this. Ride the downward transitions with as little hand as possible lengthen the rein as much as possible then ask for the transition Christoph tells Matthew. You must have the feeling Danielle Dowsett and Remi Rockefella chat with Christophe Katlin Hull demonstrating a light seat in the warm up of riding into the walk not shortening the neck. The rider must be able to school the horse properly in the half-halt. Your body language should say walk not demand it, we are a guest on the horse says Christoph. There is harmony between this horse and rider, when there is disharmony or no trust then we have problems. Razzamattaz and Robbie Soster were next into the arena. This talented horse can be unsteady in the contact and when he is not happy he can be too assertive. If you test your powers against the horse then you loose a good friend because your horse will not be your friend, warns Christoph. He encouraged the use of a short whip on Razzamattaz in preference to the long whip. He feels that people need to be educated on the use of a whip. He does not respond well to the whip behind the saddle but a tap on the shoulder rand he goes like a bomb said Christoph. Robbie agreed that since that horse had been more forward that he had been much better. The horse looked seriously impressive. Very active yet relaxed in his work which has been something that Robbie and Christoph had been working on the last two days.

17 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 1 7 Hanoverians at the Christoph Hess Clinics in November Continued Alexis Hellyer and Waca W also displayed some excellent work and rewarded with some lovely compliments from Christoph. Encouraging the freedom of the neck Christoph asked Alex to perform 3 time changes using just one hand on the reins. Initially the horse made a few minor errors but with a pat and gentle encouragement the exercise was achieved very well on just the third attempt. Showing how a calm horse and consistent approach can produce results. You will not see this easily anywhere in the world, exclaimed Christoph A rider of just 19-years and a horse of just 6-years performing the changes with one hand in front of 200 people top top class. Congratulations Alex. In Qld the clinic and judges seminar was held in Caboolture. Comments from Christophe followed the same pattern. Nicole Tough commented that If I had to think of a motto for the clinic, it would be this: Underneath the rider, the horse should be a happy athlete, and one that wants to work. Hanoverian members that took part in the clinic were Kaz Roe (For Joy), Danielle Dowsett (Remi Rockefella) and Jessica Greelish. Jessica said of her experience: I had a great time and learnt heaps during the clinic and he helped me find a new level of softness with my horse. I particularly liked the use in his training of getting the riders to ride one handed using the outside rein. Christoph used this a lot with the sequence changes as well as the canter pirouette work. By taking away my contact it made me use my seat and legs so much more and I found I developed a much better connection with my horse. It was really refreshing having such a positive clinic with the emphasis not only being on the softness, throughness and collection of the horses but also the wellbeing and mental state of the horses. Kaz Roe and For Joy hot above and cooling off below There was no new news when Christophe arrived in WA on Nov 25th, and this is as it should be, nothing new, just the classical dressage technique, but perhaps a new approach. Time, was the most important approach obtained from watching Christoph train Katlin Hull on Matavia Rivendell. He said, this horse is very large and needs time to warm up and relax. Christoph had the combination warming up in Medium canter around the outside of the 60x20 in the indoor arena at the WA State Equestrian centre at Brigadoon. Once relaxed they produced some seriously powerful work labelled soopa from Christoph and Katlin was repeatedly asked to pat her horse. Katlin Hull and Matavia Rivendell He commented on how position was so important when riding a young horse and how important it is to help young horses to be all they can be and not kill or ruin them in the process. He said that trainers need to work on the positives of the horse and only one negative at a time. He stressed to trainers how overwhelming it is for the horse/rider combination to be attacked for all negative points at once. Also a comment he repeated over and over for judges, Does the whole picture show harmony? Yes, then give a high score. WA rider and breeder Chris Eales stated I liked how Christophe trained all the combinations in the same manner, but taught each combination using the most appropriate method for their own situation in order to achieve the greatest benefit. A true master. Thanks again for the input from members and our friends at the EFA for their help with this report focussing on our fabulous Hanoverian horses at the recent Christoph Hess clinics. 22 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 2 2 NSW News Member, Kristen Closson and her new husband Chris, have very exciting news. They are about to move to Mount Vincent in the Hunter Valley. Kristen writes, We have just purchased 40 acres that is an established dressage training stable. We are very excited about the move and getting settled in to our new home with all the horses, dog, and cat in one place. We are currently spread all over the Sydney area. Kristen and Chris were married in August in Fiji. It was a very small wedding of family and a few friends on a private island in the Yasawa Archipelago. They had a mix of Fijian and Western cultures at the wedding which included a meke (cultural celebratory dance), lovo (an underground oven feast), and a kava ceremony. It was a beautiful celebration! Kristen rides 2 Hanoverian bred horses and is currently on the Prydes Easifeed Novice/Elementary Leaderboard with TS Weltblitz, a grey gelding by Weltmeyer. Some more family news, from Trevor and Kathy Coombe, who welcomed their second grandchild when their eldest daughter, Kristie, gave birth recently. We wish the Coombe family all the best. Many of our NSW members have confirmed pregnancies in their mares including the new imports Lauries As and Riverside. The Coombes were very excited that their aged mare Dom Fairy by Dom Herr/Fairy Floss xx is in foal to Lauries As this year. Let us know if you have a mare older than Dom Fairy s 20 years, in foal again this season. NSW members are also foaling new foals by Desporados, Quaterback, His Highness, Champion FP and many more! Let s hope for a good breeding and foaling season despite the breeding issues from EI in Most members would know that Adrian and Rachel Whiting from Matavia Performance Horses in the Hunter Valley have moved to WA for an adventure for a few years. All mares and yearlings and new foals are residing in QLD at Remi Stud for the duration of their working holiday, and although they are in WA and their horses in QLD, they still count themselves New South Welshmen and Hunter Valley-ites! Rachel will continue in her role as Registrar and Adrian as Vice-President and they hope to round up some new Hanoverian owners and Breeders in WA while they are there. Revelwood stud is having a ball with their recent imports. World Class (Worldly/Maatcho AA) imported by Revelwood stud, won the NSW Novice Horse of the Year. She also went on to win the only Gold performance medal given out by DNSW this year (across all levels). This is for three scores at official competitions over 75%. She is now doing an embryo transfer with Revelwood stud s new Hanoverian stallion, Riverside. A successful foal would make this mare who was awarded best Hanoverian on Tour 2008 an Elite Mare. Riverside Photoby Karl-Heinz Frieler David and Amanda from Revelwood also recently imported another mare to add to the broodmare herd. She s a tall dark liver chestnut mare by Donnerchwee x Sandro Hit. She is up for classification in February and hopefully she will provide Revelwood with many super Hanoverian offspring in the future! Craig Perkins and Laura Summerhayes from Hunter Valley Warmblood Stud are thrilled that their 2 ½ year old stallion Fiderstar (whom they purchased as a foal from the Hanoverian foal Auction in Germany) has been licensed by the Hanoverian Verband in Germany. Fiderstar (Fidertanz/De Vito) was No. 20 in the stallion licensing catalogue, Life No: His DOB and he was bred by Gerd Pigge. He is chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail, very pretty with a fabulous trot. We look forward to seeing Fiderstar do his performance test in Germany next year. Well done on this exceptional achievement. HVWS are also eagerly awaiting the arrival of their mare Londongirl (Londonderry/Santini) in January 09. Londongirl will be campaigned in '09 prior to being put in foal.

23 H H S A D e c e m b e r , I s s u e 4 P a g e 2 3 NSW News Continued Fiderstar (Fidertanz/De Vito) Londongirl (Londonderry/Santini) In NSW last month, a huge number of Hanoverian members and horses took part in the Christoph Hess clinics run by the EFA. Read about it in the article elsewhere in this newsletter. During the WA clinics, Christoph, while talking about proper riding position, commented on the beautiful position of a young rider named Robbie from NSW. Well done Robbie Soster from Robali Stud in the Southern Highlands, it seems that you and Razzamatazz left a mark! Please, if you have news from NSW that wasn t in this column, rachel@matavia.com.au or hanoverian@hanoverian.org.au and we will include you in Robbie Soster and Razzamatazz the next issue. Newsflash! Ferrero Rocher is a stallion on the Horsewerks Hanoverian Dressage Team. He is owned by Jenny Rapson and ridden by Nicholas Fyffe. We are just back from the Victorian Championships and Ferrero Rocher won the Inter I and the Inter I freestyle. Results can be obtained from EFA Victoria website. Hope you are well and have a great Christmas. Kind regards, Nicholas Fyffe on Ferrero Rocher Jenny. Victorian News I would like to thank all those members who came by to introduce themselves at Equitana it is so nice to meet you and put faces to names. We had a clinic with Joern Kubelke but unfortunately he only managed one day of the four before he became ill. In that one day members were able to have 12 very successful and long looked-forward-to lessons. Everybody is now eagerly awaiting his next visit which promises to be even more in demand as all are enthusiastic about the benefits they are receiving from his instruction. The Dressage festival was held 2 weeks later at Werribee (results on Cyberhorse) during which both horses and riders encountered weather as bad as was had at Equitana. The dedicated riders managed to soldier on and most were grateful that at least the paddocks and tanks at home were benefiting. It was unfortunate that both these stormy days coincided with the 2 most important equestrian days this half of the year after months of little or no rain. We are looking forward to the Tour in February and ask that members please get in touch to let us know what they have to inspect so that we can plan the itinerary. Gayle Moule Please, if you have news from Victoria that wasn t in this column, gaylem@deks.com.au and we will include you in the next issue.

Licensed stallion: The first step towards becoming an approved breeding stallion is the Licensing. A Breeding Stallion is licensed by the Hanoverian Society or the Hannoveraner Verband in Germany. This process is usually performed at 2 ½ years of age and is only the first part of the breeding approval for Hanoverian stallions. Stallions can be licensed by different Breed Societies, so it is important to check with the HHSA Registrar for which Breed Societies the stallion is licensed. Performance Tested Stallion: The second step towards becoming an approved breeding stallion is the Performance Test. A stallion is only performance tested after he is successfully Licensed. Traditionally in Hannover this was a 100 day test at a selection of testing stations, such as Adelheidsdorf. More recently, 70 day tests are accepted or a 30 day test plus a qualification for the Bundeschampionate. Hanoverian stallions must receive a score of 90 to be approved. Other stallions licensed by different Breed Societies must achieve a score of 120 or higher to be accepted by the Hanoverian Society, thus ensuring that only the best of non-hanoverian blood is used. Licensed through Sport: If a stallion has been Licensed with the Hanoverian Society and the Performance Test is not completed, he can instead, fulfil the performance requirements through sport. A stallion can be accepted as a Breeding Stallion if he fulfils all of the requirements of a Licensed stallion, provides a full Veterinary Report including x-rays, and has successfully competed at Prix St Georges Dressage, or B Grade Showjumping or Medium/Advanced 3DE at FEI approved competitions. There are certain requirements at these levels and this can be obtained from the Society. Stallions Accepted for Hanoverian Breeding: A stallion is ONLY accepted for breeding with the Hanoverian Verband or the HHSA if he has successfully been Licensed AND Performance Tested with the appropriate scores, OR successfully Licensed and achieved the performance requirements through sport. Breeders should always check with the HHSA Registrar before purchasing semen or signing breeding contracts to ensure that the stallion they plan to use is accepted by the Hanoverian Society. Stallions cannot advertise that they are licensed Hanoverian Stallions, or use the H logo, unless they have been fully approved with the Hanoverian Society. (i) The HHSA does accept other stallions that are unregistered in Australia, however extra fees apply. Please contact the Registrar for further details. (ii) Only frozen semen available
