2 Western Dressage? At its core, Western Dressage is no different from Classical Dressage. Many Western horseman agree that the goals and methods for training a Western horse are the same as those used over centuries among classical dressage enthusiasts. The relatively new discipline of Western Dressage bridges the alleged separation that has existed between these two worlds, bringing together the history and culture of horsemanship of the American West and the ancient traditions of dressage practiced in Institutions such as the Spanish Riding School. Some say it combines the superb almost intuitive riding of American Cowboys with the systematic training methods of venerable European institutions. Western Dressage readily acknowledges and embraces the fact that the typical Western Stock horse is built differently from the breeds most often seen in today's classical dressage ring. For many, this marriage was only a matter of time. With its commitment to harmony, lightness, good horse - human connection and communication and athleticism, Western riding is a natural development for dressage. Western Dressage uses the principles of classical dressage to improve the balance, cadence, and carriage of a horse. Following a progressive training path similar to that of traditional dressage, Western dressage begins with an individual horse's natural ability to carry himself and uses increasingly more difficult gymnastic exercises to improve that ability. Some of the ongoing goals include a horse that moves with his center of gravity shifted toward the rear; has greater elasticity in his muscles; shows responsiveness to the aids; and demonstrates perfection of longitudinal and lateral balance. Overall, the horse should be able to work with ease and grace through progressively difficult patterns and exercises. Western Dressage was officially branded in the United States in 2010, and in 2013 the United States Equestrian Federation named the Western Dressage Association of America an affiliate organization with its own chapter in the USEF rule book. It is a systematic and progressive system of training for the western horse and rider in traditional stock tack with the purpose of enjoying a safe, pleasurable, versatile, and useful working horse. Vivian is the Vice President of the California Western Dressage Association and is instrumental in promoting Western Dressage throughout the United State. She has a USDF Bronze Medal and a USDF Masters Challenge Award in FEI Level in Classical Dressage. In 2014 Vivian was 3rd Level Western Dressage Champion in California. Alece Ellis L Judge - In addition to her IJA Judges License (including IJA Dressage), Alice holds judging cards for multiple gaited breeds. She scribes for USEF Judges (from L S) at local to national championship level shows, which has enhanced her eye for correct dressage riding. Alice believes correct use of the training pyramid is important for any breed or discipline and is committed to building a solid foundation of rhythm and relaxation. Alece teaches riders the importance of equine biomechanics and how to assist the horse to become balanced and supple... in their ground and under-saddle work. Alece says the relationship between form, function and gait is my passion, and to that end works to help riders and their horses develop a relaxed, soft and unified relationship. She is from East Tennessee with her two Rocky Mountain Horses and one Tennessee Walker. Pauline Stotsenberg IJA Judge - Has many years judging Classical, Western & Gaited Dressage. She has attended several veterinary colleges in the west regarding the benefit that horses are ridden right to avoid early injuries. As she became educated about the gaited Tennessee Walkers, her passion for this breed consumed her. Unfortunately, so did the truths about how a large portion of the breed spend their lives in pain and suffering for the sake of a ribbon in the show ring. When FOSH was being formed, it was clear that its founding principles were in alignment with Pauline s. She became involved and was licensed as a judge through FOSH with the first group of IJA Judges. Day 1: Sessions on Corrective Riding. Judges will be working on correct positions, making the rider feel the transformation between rider and horse, looking for more subtleness while creating a freer shoulder/gaits & rhythm. Beneficial for any discipline. Lunch Break: Linda Bla ck, ow ner of Perfect Balance Hoofcare, LLP, E.L.P.O. Certified Lameness Specialist will talk about the importance of correct and balanced shoeing. Linda is graduate of The State of Washington Farrier College. ******************** Day 2: Each rider w ill ride a Dressage Test that they would like to be judged on by both judges. Afterwards, judges will help rider with better results for future shows. Will work on the improvements from Day 1. The gaited riders may bring dressage tests of choice from the IJA dressage tests of choice, from the IJA Dressage Manual, Western Gaited Dressage, TWHBEA or NWHA. Lunch Break: Dr Mike Hog e, DVM (g r a d of Extensive lameness exam only 11 other vets in US have this credential) will speak about lameness in horses. 5 Breed Highlight The Lipizzan The Lipizzan is one of the oldest breeds of horses in Europe. The original breeding farm, Lipizza, was created in 1580 in what was at that time part of the Austrian Empire (now the country of Slovenia). Lipizzan horses have been selectively bred for strength, hardiness, temperament, endurance, and longevity through six classic stallion lines whose origins can be traced back to the eighteenth century. This desire for a powerful and agile horse to be used for military purposes as well as for the noble families in Europe is what started the breeding program that led to the Lipizzan of today. The Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria, exemplifies the beauty and uniqueness of the Lipizzan by showcasing their trainability and strength. The school has used the Lipizzan exclusively because it is the most capable of performing all the dressage movements, especially the airs above the ground. Standing an average of 14.2 to 15.2 hands and most commonly gray, the Lipizzan is considered a baroque type horse sturdy, strong, balanced, elegant, and compact. The modern Lipizzan has proven itself to be an extremely versatile and athletic horse, excelling in many disciplines, including dressage, driving, western, and trail, as well as being a noble family companion. There are fewer than 1,500 purebred Lipizzans in North America. The highest concentration of the breed is in Europe, with small numbers also present in South Africa and Australia.
