FOREWORD Red House Stables & Museum was built and set up in 1946 by Caroline Dale- Leech s father, Bill Smith, whose parents came over from Dublin to escape the troubles. Bill ran a successful fluorspar business but his passion lay with horses, and he brought over many equines from Ireland to sell on, always making sure there was a donkey with the weekly consignment. He also set up a busy riding school and there were usually close to 50 horses and ponies on the yard. But it is with coaching that Bill is most closely associated, a passion that he passed onto his daughter Caroline. Family holidays for the young, horse- mad Caroline, along with her mother Edna, two sisters and a brother, were a five day trip on the coach to Heacham in Norfolk. After a week spent riding the horses in the sea, the team would be driven home. Bill took a farrier and a lad to help on these momentous trips and he never used a spare horse, such was the compassion and care he had for the animals welfare. When Bill died in 1969, Caroline was determined to continue running the enterprises at Red House. Over the years she has worked tirelessly, and selflessly, to keep the business going, as well as putting a huge amount back into the sport. For nearly three decades she was the BDS Junior Commissioner and helped scores of children with tests, scholarships and work placements. She is a senior judge, a highly qualified instructor and an authority on all aspects of coaching, carriages and equines. Alongside the riding school and carriage business, she has also run a B & B. With the support of her husband Peter, Caroline has made the hard decision to disperse the carriages and accoutrements which have made Red House such a famous and popular museum. There are some rare and fascinating lots on offer, from children s hunting attire made by Edna, to the magnificent Travelling Chariot which is included in the auction by kind permission. It has been in the same family since being built at the end of the 18 th Century. Caroline s popularity in the carriage world, as well as in the local community, will ensure this dispersal is a busy one. She is keeping her beautiful grey horses and will continue to take out the Gay Gordon Road Coach on trips round Chatsworth and the Peak District, as well as providing commercial and teaching services. But the time has come to scale back her commitments and provide others with a chance to own some fascinating carriages and memorabilia.

Lot 903 FOUR- WHEEL BAKER S VAN Recently converted to a people carrier, to suit 15 hh and over, single, pair and team. The original tin sides were removed but will be included in the sale, and bevelled glass windows were added so that the passengers can see out clearly. To be sold with both shafts and a pole

Lot 904 SHOOTING BRAKE By Muskett & Walton of Warrington circa 1880 to suit 15 hh and over, pair or team; the rectangular body is in alternate stained wood and black slats, and sits on green iron shod wheels and unders. A well- constructed vehicle, fitted with both foot and hand brakes, which has been used extensively over the years for training, exercise and commercial purposes, including country style funerals. It was the first carriage purchased by Mr Smith, Mrs Dale- Leech s father, when he set up his riding school and collection at Red House Stables

Lot 905 SINGLE BROUGHAM By Holmes of Derby & London, circa Previously owned by the Inge family of Thorpe Hall, Thorpe Constantine, Tamworth. The doors are mounted with the family crest of two battle axes in saltire enclosed by a ducal coronet, with motto Ubi Amor Ibi Fides (Where there is love, there is faith). The unusual, deep, front section, coupled with the iron shod wheels, indicates this may have been intended for provincial as opposed to town use. Finished in navy blue and black, with turquoise blue lining. The interior is particularly good, in navy Melton and black leather, with carriage lace handles, pockets to the doors, navy silk blinds, hat straps and a coachman s cord. The front and door windows drop down, there is an interior storage compartment and the exterior luggage rail is detachable. Externally, the front dash is in black leather, the steps have covers attached to the base of the doors, there is a handbrake and the springs are full and three- quarter elliptics. Holmes of Derby were excellent builders in their day and their carriages have stood up well over the years. This Brougham is suitable for a horse pair and would be ideal for wedding or film work; it will be sold with a pair of round fronted lamps

Lot 906 FIVE GLASS LANDAU Built circa 1900, originally constructed on iron shod wheels and converted to rubber tyres when fully restored in the 1980 s. To suit a horse pair; painted navy blue with red lining, the interior is in matching buttoned navy Melton. The wide front dashboard, mudguards and rear hood are covered in black leather. The window glass is bevelled and there is a handbrake and pole. This vehicle is ideal for wedding and commercial use, having the advantage of the glass front which enables the passengers to see out and be seen, or have the option of the rear hood up on an inclement day. To be sold with a pair of square pattern lamps by Cook & Holden

Lot 907 SIAMESE PHAETON By Mulliner of Birmingham, circa This is a rare opportunity to acquire a well- known vehicle of superb quality which has been in the collection for many years and also appears in Sallie Walrond s Looking at Carriages. It remains in what is thought to be the original paintwork of bright yellow and black, with an unusual painted basket weave effect to the back of the rounded seats. Overall it is in good order, although some careful conservation would be beneficial to enable use at Attelage events. The two Siamese seats are upholstered in buttoned black Melton and are linked by sweeping mudguards which straighten at the base to form steps to the rear seat; inset at the front is a pair of fine pagoda topped lamps. There are neat boots below the seats, the front hubs are fitted with oval step treads and there is a handbrake. At all points, the builders have enhanced the quality of their product, which has been equipped with slender springs, tapered spokes to the English patterned wheels, shaped woodwork and carved dub ends. Centrally placed at the rear is the Inge family crest, which also appears on the Brougham.

Lot 908 SPINDLE BACK GIG To suit 13 to 13-2 hh by Noble of Clones; painted yellow and black, and on 42 wheels. Has been adapted and more recently used for display purposes outside the museum.

On 12- spoke Warner wheels, with fitted foot rest, lamp brackets, brass rein rail and whip holder, rear basket, and spares box. With swingletree and a Bennington stand

To suit 13-2 to 14-2 hh; painted brown and creamy yellow, with the curved dash painted black, and sign written A Cowley, Baker, Stony Stratford Est The enclosed, canopy fronted body has neat bevelled glass windows and sits on spoke wheels and a cranked axle, and when not in use stands on the pair of props at the front, which have integral steps. The wooden shelves used for storing the bread are accessible from both the front and the door to the rear. Lot 911 BREAD DELIVERY VAN Purchased by Arthur Cowley s grandfather from a cobbler who used it on the streets of Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire. It was thought to have been built in the Wolverton Carriage Works. Arthur Cowley used the Bread Cart up until 1968 delivering to the villages surrounding the town. After being in storage in 1990, it was restored and used with great success in light trade classes both by Arthur Cowley himself and by Carol Wilkson for a few years. Three straw boaters and a basket will be included in the sale

Lot 912 MANCHESTER PANEL CART Built by Anne Cowburn of Manchester to suit 15 to 16 hh, single or tandem; painted black with red lining, and upholstered in black Melton. Having only had two owners since being built, this is a fine example by an excellent builder, whose carriages rarely come onto the open market as there are now so few in existence. Anne Cowburn was a member of the Lawton family, and her vehicles are similar in type and quality to their work. Resembling a Dog Cart, the body is mounted on Dennett springs and 54ins 16- spoke warner wheels with iron tyres. The seat is adjustable to help alter the balance depending on the load, and the tailboard drops. There are the additional attention to detail features of dummy louvers and tapered shafts. This carriage would be ideal for Attelage and because of its proportions, looks particularly good with a Friesian horse

Lot 913 TENNIS CAR By Smith of Stockport to suit 14-2 to 15-2 hh, single or tandem; painted green and lined in yellow, with green upholstery to the adjustable seat. Like a Ralli Car in profile, it was built for the vendor s family and retains its original footrest

Lot 914 CONTINENTAL VICTORIA Built circa 1900, recently converted for use with an 18 hh horse; painted dark green with gold lining. The interior is in cream upholstery and the front seat is in burgundy; to the rear is a slatted luggage rack. Used by the vendor for weddings with an 18 hh Shire. To be sold with a pair of carriage lamps

Lot 915 BENNINGTON BABY BUGGY To suit 11 to 12 hh; painted maroon. In very good condition Lot 916 PANEL CART By A. E. Walker of Gainscross Stroud, circa 1910 to suit 12hh to 14hh. Finished in black and varnished natural wood ; the Bedford Cord upholstery has been restored. On 44 inch, 16- spoke wheels, with a rear facing seat and drop tailgate. In good, original condition

Lot 917 BROUGHAM COACH By Wyburn & Co., 121 Long Acre, London, post 1870, to suit 14 to 16 hh. An original carriage in dark blue with red lining and leather upholstery. On 14- spoke Warner wheels with elliptic springs, and with wedge driver s seat in black upholstery. An ideal vehicle for everyday/exercise use which has not been used for 5 years so requires some tidying up. With foot and handbrakes, shafts and a pole. The pair of carriage lamps shown will be sold in Sundries

Lot 919 IRISH RALLI CAR By Johnsons of Kyrlsquay, Cork to suit 11 to 13 hh; painted black and green with yellow lining. On 16- spoke Warner wheels and Dennet springs, with beige cloth upholstery with stud detail

AN IMPORTANT TRAVELLING CHARIOT by Coates & Blizard of 9 Park Lane, London, dating from circa Built for the Wright family of Eyam Hall, Derbyshire at a cost of 250, it remains in the family s ownership. It was commissioned by the then Equerry at Windsor Castle and at the time would have been expensive to both build and maintain, as well as being a significant status symbol for its owner. It remains in original condition and has been well maintained, with the wheels running easily. Its sale provides a unique opportunity to acquire a collector s piece which has never before been on the open market. Lot 920 TRAVELLING CHARIOT Similar in profile to a Post- Chaise, the high body sits on an impressive late Georgian undercarriage of perch, C- springs and leather braces. The iron- shod wheels have a pronounced dish which was associated with carriages of this period, and the spokes have been tapered into the felloes. In front there is a Salisbury boot, behind which sits a removable leather hat trunk which would have been used when travelling. To the back of the body is the sword case and in the floor there are two trap doors which allowed passengers to drop their valuables through in the event of hijacking.

The original green, red and gold interior has been delightfully preserved because in the 1830s a pink and white Regency stripe satin was placed over it for a family wedding, most of which is still in place; green carpet covers the beautifully crafted folding steps. The doors are mounted with louvered night boards and the original square pattern lamps with night covers are in their fixed brackets. At all points, the woodwork has been shaped, tapered or decorated with acanthus leaves. The grooms leather handles hang from the upper rear corners and the leather apron attaches to the rear rumble seat. Below, the drag shoe hangs from the rear axle, its chain covered in leather. The pole is held in place by a wooden wedge

No lot or lots shall be removed from the premises until paid for, but each and every lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer be considered as delivered and be and remain in every respect at the absolute risk of the respective Purchaser or Purchasers thereof, and shall be removed at the Purchaser s expense after the conclusion of the Sale and taken with all faults or errors of description. 6. The Auctioneers act only as agents for the Vendor(s) and are not responsible for any default by either Vendor(s) or Purchaser. In particular, they shall not be liable to pay the Vendor until payment is received from the Purchaser. 7. No undertaking of the Auctioneers or their employees to take charge of any lots after the sale or to forward them to their destination shall be held to impose upon the Auctioneers any legal obligation or vitiate any of the foregoing conditions. 8. Purchasers paying by cheque must be prepared, if required, to produce a banker s reference. The Auctioneers reserve the right in their sole discretion to refuse payment by cheque. 9. In all cases of transfer the original Purchaser shall be held responsible for the purchase money. 10. The Auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw or divide any lot or to combine any two or more lots at his sole discretion and to sell in such order as he may think fit. 11. The Auctioneers have described the lots to the best of their ability and belief from information furnished by the Vendors who shall be alone responsible for any error or mis-statement, which there may be. The Auctioneers undertake no liability whatever in respect of any faults, deficiencies and errors of any description, oral or printed, nor do they accept responsibility for the authenticity, genuineness, origin, age, condition or quality of any lot and all statements as to these matters whether contained in the catalogue or made orally are statements of opinion only and are not to be taken as being or implying a statement or representation of fact. Any intending Purchaser must satisfy himself by inspection or otherwise as to the correctness of each such statement. The Vendor does not make or give and neither the Auctioneers, nor any person in their employ, have any authority to make or give any representation or warranty in relation to any of the lots without the express instructions of the Vendor(s). 12. The Auctioneers accept no responsibility in connection with the commissioning of their staff to bid for any lots. Reserves and commissions given verbally or by telephone are accepted at the sender s risk and must be confirmed in writing before the Sale. 13. THIRD PARTY LIABILITY. All persons on the Auctioneers premises before, during or after the Sale shall be deemed to be there at their own risk and with notice of the condition of the premises and of the method of arranging lots and shall have no claim against the Auctioneers in respect of any injury or accident which may occur from any cause whatsoever. 14. If any Purchaser shall fail to comply with the above conditions or any of them, the Auctioneers shall be at liberty to recover in full the amount of the purchase money of the lot or lots bought by such Purchaser together with all interest, costs, charges and expenses, without reference to any delivery or acceptance of the lot or lots, other than the first delivery by the fall of the hammer, or to resell any lot or lots bought by such Purchasers, either by public or private sale, and the full amount of the purchase money at the present sale, or the deficiency (if any) arising from the second sale, together with all interest, costs, charges and expenses, shall be made good by the defaulter and be recoverable as and for liquidated damages. Auctioneers: THIMBLEBY & SHORLAND, READING NOTE: Purchasers or their agents are requested to obtain accounts and delivery orders at the Auctioneers Office before leaving the place of sale and carefully to examine same. The Auctioneers cannot be held responsible for any errors in accounts or delivery orders unless they are notified of such errors on the day of sale and before the lots are removed from the premises.
