5 Concussion in Sport uses the latest scientific evidence to help guide decisions on diagnosing, managing and treating concussions. This announcement comes at the urging of both the sporting and medical communities who have long called for a more standardized approach. The new guideline, which is aimed at coaches, teachers, parents, medical professionals and anyone who interacts with athletes at various levels addresses seven key areas including: pre-season education, head injury recognition, on site medical assessment, medical assessment, concussion management, multidisciplinary concussion care and return to sport. 8 Trail Markers Styrene trail markers are available free in limited quantities to HCBC member clubs. These markers are 4.5 by 6 inches in size and can be nailed to trees to mark a trail. There is space at the bottom to put directional arrows or trail names with permanent markers. Contact Nancy at recreation@hcbc.ca to order, or call or , extension Note: As responsible horsemen and trail builders, it is important to remember that trees are living things and to respect them as such. Do not use steel nails, which can damage trees and cause disease, as well as create a serious hazard for anyone who may have to use a chainsaw on the tree in the future. Use aluminum or nylon nails, and let them stick out enough to allow the tree room to grow, or nail through a used aluminum horseshoe (available from race horse owners or farriers) so the sign stays attached as the tree expands. (Thanks to Larri Woodrow and Bill Archibald of Back Country Horsemen of B.C. for the above advice.) 8/12

Cavalletti training improves the gaits; promotes rhythm, suppleness, and cadence; and increases the fitness of your horse. This newly revised guide shows cavalletti work on the longe, provides valuable new ideas specifically for dressage work, and numerous updated diagrams for jumping gymnastics, along with all new color photographs. INVASIVE SPECIES OF THE MONTH Join us for a high-level look at the invasive plant species of particular interest to horse owners, from plants that threaten pasture health, to plants with potentially toxic effects on equines. Emphasis will be placed on identifying the most prevalent invasive plant species, their negative effects, and providing information portals that will allow the listener to discover a deeper look at the problem as it applies to them.
