2 Welcome to: WARRAGUNDI BEEF CO What a great past 18 months or so the industry has enjoyed, and by all accounts 2017 looks very strong for us as well. Industry experts predict an easing as we go into 2018 based on Global fundamentals but this remains to be seen. Australian Beef symbolises clean green quality and Asia is getting closer by the day. New emerging markets are opening, Live Air export trade is emerging. Infrastructure such as the Toowoomba International airport has been constructed and 28 million people are transitioning into the Middle Class of China per annum. We are in a new millennium with vastly different market opportunities to 10 years ago. There are other factors as well. The insatiable demand of the emerging Chinese middle class for high quality beef has to be seen to be believed, and Aussie beef is recognised as safe and of a high quality. Our business has attracted much interest from Chinese visitors over the past 12 months. Warragundi Beef Company is a family owned stud and commercial Poll Hereford Beef enterprise located at Currabubula in North Western NSW. We are vertically integrated and have our own retail outlet in Quirindi NSW and plans for Tamworth. The Warragundi Beef Company achieved 4 bronze medal awards during 2016 in the Australian Food Awards, Sydney Royal Fine Food Awards and the Sydney Royal Beef Challenge for its home bred Hereford beef. We have provided here a selection of Sires that will be offered for sale at the upcoming Wodonga and Dubbo National Sales. With our increasing involvement at the retail end of the business, more and more our focus is directed toward the commercial attributes that will ensure the eating quality of the stock produced. We are MSA certified producers and our retail arm is MSA certified. Specific focuses include marbling, good fat coverage over the primal areas of the carcase and importantly strong visual muscling and skin and hair. Whilst we strongly believe in Breedplan and raw data collection,we are seeing more and more in the beef industry a fixation on Breedplan figures, sometimes at the expense of visual assessment.. Whilst we pay close attention to Breedplan figures we believe these must be considered in conjunction with the animal s overall conformation, correctness, appearance, visual muscling and expression of muscle all being very important attributes. In our shop we weigh our primal cuts and establish a percentage of individual primal cuts to overall dressed carcase weights. What we are finding with some sires is a departure from what Breedplan would indicate in these areas. A case in point, one of our less strong breedplan sires Warragundi Galileo, was this year, our highest scanning IMF sire and he was up against some well credentialed strong breedplan sires. He also excels in percentage primals to dressed carcase weight. His stock are good looking, well muscled animals. Please refer to the resident sires section of this catalogue for captions of his steers currently on feed. For the foreseeable future we will be selling our weaners and market finished animals by weight. Most of these animals will be purchased out of the saleyard system and there will always be a cost advantage for animals with good visual muscling and good skin and hair both physically attractive and correct. All of our bulls are put to the test and must have animals on feed for a 400 day kill to collect the MSA carcase data. Our highest MSA indexing carcase in 2016 (66.17) was by Warragundi Galileo whose breedplan figures are below breed average for most traits. As we gather more and more actual carcase data from the MSA carcase feedback data we are able to offer bull buyers assurance that Warragundi bulls have had to stand up to some rigorous maternal, growth and carcase assessments. E56 has a tremendous Banner Heifer at foot and is leaving animals with eye appeal and very good structure. (The Markowen females have been very influential for our stud). This son has all of that with great depth thickness and softness backed up by a solid set of figures. Top 10% Rib and Rump, Top 15% IMF, Top 5% 200 and 400 day and Top 10% 600 day. Visually you can see these strong figures in this bull with great visual muscling and softness. We will use this bull in both stud and commercial herds and we are tipping some excellent MSA Carcase data at a 400 day kill. I think he will produce great females, bulls and terminal animals. He had a foot infection last Spring during all the wet weather which set him back significantly. He has all the attributes to make a top sire. Joybelle is one of our best cows with the worst set of figures, however her bulls have averaged $9000 for us. He is winning classes in the show ring and will be a great MSA indexing 400 day sire. The industry requires bulls that yield and he is in the top 5% for retail beef yield for the breed. As mentioned carcase data on these Galileos and ongoing MSA feedback (top 5% indexing) continues to impress us and will see Galileo s breedplan figures improve dramatically. We are about to kill another group of Galileos that have been on feed for 120 days. They are superb animals (see gallery and page 35) and the results will be compelling. With the introduction of yield based payments to the industry this is a bull worth a look. The modern industry as we mentioned requires bulls that yield and this guy is in the top 5% for Retail Beef yield for the breed. This bull IMF scans exceeded industry recognised bulls.
