1 Home of Wingana Gideon 13.2hh Sec C Welsh Cob Stallion the Welsh Historical records make mention of Welsh Ponies Cobs being imported to Australia since the early 1800 s. While much information has been lost, the influence of the Welsh breeds can be seen in depictions of horses ponies in early Australian life. They have influenced the type of animal bred in this country since then, both out in stations as an allpurpose family horse used for transport for pleasure. The Welsh breeds in Australia The Welsh Pony Cob Society of Australia Inc. was founded in Melbourne in Currently, the Society has a membership exceeding 3,000 throughout Australia. The purpose of the Society is to maintain an accurate studbook promote Welsh Ponies Cobs. The national office is situated in Pakenham, Victoria. Regional groups under the umbrella of the Society are situated in all states of Australia, providing enthusiasts with social educational events, as well as shows. Each state has an All Welsh Show each year, as well as many other events ranging from breed shows, performance shows, including working show hunter, various ridden events, including dressage. Welsh Ponies Cobs are very successful in many disciplines including harness, as well as epitomising the child s riding pony, from leading rein to the more experienced rider. They truly are the breed for all the family. With four sections within the Welsh breed, they range from around 11hh up to 15.2hh. There are also many very successful registered part-welsh animals competing successfully promoting the versatility of the Welsh breeds. Photo by Cristina Wilkins courtesy of Barn Hill Stud Formation of the Society in Australia The Welsh Pony Cob Society of Australia Inc. was founded in 1969 after a meeting at the Melbourne Royal Show in Victoria by a group of enthusiasts. This hastily-convened meeting was followed by a more formal assembly at the Royal Agricultural Society s offices to form a Welsh Pony Cob Society in Australia. Mr Ian McDuie travelled to Wales to discuss the matter with the then Secretary of the Welsh Pony Cob Society of Wales. He returned to Australia with a clear idea of how regulations should be framed in order to fall in line with the Welsh Studbook in Wales. The newly-formed Society s founding members then wrote to Wales, noting their objectives seeking the parent Society s recognition approval. The first annual general meeting as a constituted Society took place on 24th September, The forming of the Welsh Pony Cob Society of Australia Inc. provides breeders enthusiasts with the opportunity to promote the breed give it more identity. Prior to the forming of the Welsh Pony Cob Society of Australia Inc., Welsh Ponies Cobs could be registered with the Australian Pony Studbook Society, which was formed in Until 1962, Welsh Ponies Cobs were registered within the Australian Pony Section. In 1962, a section opened within the Australian Pony Studbook for Welsh Mountain Purebred Foundation Stock. In the following years, subsequent sections were also opened for other sections of the Welsh breeds. Anglia Park is a small boutique stud located at The Rocks in NSW. History of the Welsh breeds It is thought that much of the improvement refinement of the Welsh breeds occurred in the period in Wales, United Kingdom. This is attributed to the influence of Arabian stallions brought back to Wales by crusaders. The native type of the breed has been fixed on that of the Arabian with more bone height to serve the purpose of war peace in that period of history. In 1188, it was noted there were also excellent studs deriving their origin from fine Spanish horses brought into the area. in 1535, King Henry VIII passed legislation imposing penalties on anyone who used a stallion under 14hh. He aimed to eliminate nags of small stature. This was followed in 1541 by the prohibition of the use of any stallion under 15hh, with all smaller ponies to be destroyed. Fortunately, for Wales, many smaller ponies escaped into the hills, surviving hardship. The resulting survivors being of the hardiest type. Queen Elizabeth would later annul this law. In the 1700 s, a descendant of the Darley Arabian was turned out into the Ruabon Hills of Wales. Barb Arabians were also imported bred to Welsh Pony mares. In the latter years of the 1800 s, Welsh breeders used Hackney stallions on their native Welsh Cob mares to produce carriage horses. In the late 1920 s, two stallions of equal oriental Welsh breeding were accepted into the Studbook with the intention of breeding riding ponies for children. These ponies later became Section B of the Studbook. Image by Anne Killeen, courtesy Welsh Pony Cob Society of Australia Inc. Breeding the Welsh ponies cobs Welsh Ponies Cobs are recognised the world over as one of the most beautiful versatile breeds. They are renowned for their temperament character. To this day, breeders strive to maintain the various sections of the Welsh breeds true to their stard of excellence, whilst preserving their quality temperament. When exhibited at Society events, all Welsh Ponies Cobs must be shown in a natural state. The Welsh breeds are native are to be presented as such. It is vital to their history to preserve this in all local national levels. This does not mean that discreet tidying up of the animal is not permitted. However, manes tails must be free-flowing, feather retained to display their native quality. Their extravagant movement is a very strong characteristic, which breeders strive to retain. A clean, healthy coat a wellconditioned animal are very important during presentation, as with any breed of horse being exhibited. Part-Welsh animals may be presented as the owner decides most suitable. The Welsh gelding Welsh geldings produced by any of the four sections registered with the Welsh Pony Cob Society of Australia Inc. are in great dem. All Welsh geldings fall under the umbrella of Section E of the Studbook. However, their breeding is noted on their registration certificate, i.e. Section E Gelding of A Breeding. At Society events, the classes are usually divided into the section of the Studbook from which their breeding is derived, i.e. Gelding of Section A Breeding. Over-height geldings are eligible to be shown in their relevant class. The Welsh gelding competes successfully in open competition with all other breeds cross breeds. In addition, the Society promotes classes for the Welsh gelding in a wide range of equestrian fields at regional national levels, as well as local shows. The Welsh gelding s temperament makes it the ideal mount for all members of the family, irrespective of age. The part-welsh There is no stard of excellence for a Part Welsh horse or pony. The best inherit the strong constitution, good bone, courage, activity equable temperament of the Welsh breeds that have led to worldwide renown. It is, therefore, not surprising that Welsh animals are in such high dem for crossing with other breeds. There is a register for Part Welsh horses, cobs ponies whose breeding shows more than 12.5 per cent of registered Welsh blood. There is no upper or lower height limit for Part Welsh As part-welsh animals are accepted into the register with a minimum of 12.5 per cent Welsh blood, it could not be expected that they exhibit obvious Welsh characteristics. Judges generally look for a well-conformed, quality animal that is capable of competing against all breeds. It should exhibit good bone movement to suit the purpose for which it is intended.
