Our speaker will be Donnie Smith with a report on the Camp Perry results for the Arizona Junior Rifle Team. Also, the Board has asked that as many members as possible attend for a Special Presentation. You may notice that the NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION FLAG at the Range no longer looks like it was in a hurricane. RSO Ken Stosel took the flag home and his Betsy Ross wife was kind enough to mend it. So, if you see Ken, tell him THANKS! LADIES DAY: Meets on the 2 nd Sunday. The next Ladies Day will be Sunday, October 8th, 9 am. We supply the guns and ammo. (You can bring your own guns/ammo, if you wish.) HUNTER SAFETY CLASS: NOTICE A Hunter Safety is scheduled for the end of October. Also, there is a computer class scheduled for the first of November. Go to the Arizona Game & Fish website for information and class schedules. DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SALT WOOD? In the mid 1960 s, there was a particularly high demand for Browning arms, but a shortage of the high grade walnut used for stocks. Browning contracted with a California logger that had a large inventory of lumber from clearing the routes of power lines. Unfortunately, the kiln drying process of drying the wood was too slow to meet the demand so Browning worked with the Morton Salt Company to develop a salt solution that could dry the walnut faster than kiln drying. In 1965, Browning's wood supply covered approximately an area the size of a football field. Blanks were stacked in lots five feet by five feet by eight feet long and covered by salt. The salt leached out the moisture from the top layers, but soaked those on the bottom. This caused the salt to be retained in the blanks used for Browning gun stocks causing rusting where the metal touched the wood. "Salt wood" was present in at least 90% of all Brownings made between 1966 and Smaller supplies of the contaminated stocks continued to be sold until The test for "salt wood" is the presence of rust any place wood touches metal. Back out any screw in the stock to see if rust has occurred. Remove the action and barrel to check the underside for rust. Rumors in the trade suggest that Browning was not the only gun manufacturer that ran afoul of the salt drying process. Any stock made from 1966 through 1972 may be suspicious.
