3 Flint Oak s New West Ranch On November 17 th, 2012, Flint Oak purchased 500 acres located approximately four miles northwest of Flint Oak. Much of our focus over the spring and summer included work on our new property fittingly titled, the West Ranch. During this time, our concentration was spent gaining adequate access to and throughout the new property along with burning many of the fields. Over two and a half miles of fence has been assembled enclosing the property. We rebuilt eight existing ponds in addition to their spillways and overflow pipes. Five new ponds were also constructed. Not only has the West Ranch preserve received attention but also the structures present on site. An existing barn on the property has been cleaned up to use for storage; unfortunately an old cabin had to be torn down and removed. However, a new two bedroom, two bathroom cabin will break ground this fall to house some of our staff. The cabin sits in a beautiful location overlooking one of the many ponds on the West Ranch. With this additional acreage and controlled shooting area, the West Ranch provides a brand new opportunity to explore. Though not as heavily timbered as the main property at Flint Oak, the West Ranch offers more of the scenic, rolling Flint Hills of Kansas. This beautiful and exciting new terrain has numerous ponds and five zones to hunt. It is also an excellent area to experience quail coveys scattering on an action packed Super Quail hunt. We planted many food plots across this land for those wanting to encounter a great deer. Join us in one of our new, enclosed tower blinds to sight in your next big buck. Please plan to hunt with us this upcoming hunt season and explore our latest offering, the West Ranch! Mike Meyer passed away on April 29, 2013 after a long battle with cancer. He had been a valuable employee since September, Mike worked the Preserve department, starting out as part time guide and ending up doing many tasks as well as the balance of the farm work each spring. Mike drove the tractor and hunt wagon delivering many members and their guests to the Major European for many hunt seasons. His friendly smile, dependability and willing attitude will be greatly missed.

5 Super Quail Hunts Reminiscent of Days of Old Flint Oak Waterfowl Forecast The waterfowl forecast at Flint Oak looks great for the upcoming season. With the start of our third season it looks like our Duck Hunting will be back, bigger and better than ever. Last year we added four new twenty-eight feet pit blinds to West Lake for the shooting comfort of our Members. They were so well received that during the season we actually had to turn away Members and their guests who did not get their reservations in early, as we ran out of ducks in March. We have upped the number of ducks for the season, but at the rate of growth we are experiencing and the enjoyment level from our Members don t wait too long to book your hunts. Duck Hunts go out around 6:15-6:30 am depending on the time of year and legal shooting hours. Your Guide will have hot coffee and a huge breakfast burrito ready to get your early morning jump started before the fast paced action of decoying Mallards begins. We almost always finish by 8:30 am, so that you have the option of returning to the Lodge in time for a morning Field Hunt or Private European starting at 9:00 am. The adventurous hunters, who cannot cram enough into one day, are booking early morning Duck Hunts, morning Field Hunts and a European after lunch for what we call the Flint Oak triathlon. If you were to add some 5-stand Knock Out followed with a fantastic meal in the Lodge we promise that you will have no problem falling asleep in your lodge room with memories of Magic Moments from your day afield! Book your group s Duck Hunt today, and see what all the QUACKING is about Hunt season is HERE and it s time to start planning your hunting activity. Remember that when you book a field hunt you have the option of our traditional standard mixed bag field hunt (quail, pheasant and chukar) or the Flint Oak super quail hunt. The super quail hunt averages twelve covey flushes, is exciting and reminiscent of the quail hunting days of old. From the constant flurry of quail coveys flushing to the excellent and continual working of the dogs, this event delivers the most exhilarating hunt that you and your guests can imagine. This style of field hunt has become a Member/guest favorite. Keep in mind that Flint Oak can only accommodate a limited number of super quail hunts daily, so be sure and book early to insure your spot in the field. f ÅÑÄç exáxüätà ÉÇá Help us serve you better. We schedule our personnel based on the reservations we receive. This is why we require advance reservations on ALL activities. Spur of the moment decisions to add to, or change, scheduled activities are difficult and sometimes impossible to accommodate. The more accurate the information you provide in advance, the better we can serve you. 5

6 Shoot Like A Pro By Ethan Rimel Wouldn t it be nice to shoot like a pro? Whether you are a beginner or just want to improve your skills, Flint Oak is a great place to turn to. Flint Oak s certified shooting instructors love seeing you smile when the extra little details that improve your ability come together for you. Lessons are available for an individual as one-on-one instructions or your whole group can receive lessons in both gun safety and skill improvement. So come join in on some fun either before the hunting season gets started, or during one of your trips to enjoy Flint Oak s great hunting preserve. Flint Oak will get you on the right path to shooting like a pro. Flint Oak-Land of Opportunity By JB The 2013 deer season is just around the corner and with the great spring rains and crop growth we achieved this past season, the deer should have large antler development. This last spring Flint Oak bought 500 acres where the staff planted a bean field along a creek with large hardwoods. This land has great habitat for large whitetail with tall grasses, plenty of water along with fields and supplements for the deer. (Going to be the Hot Spot). We have also upgraded our deer stands to enclosed tower blinds for warmth and comfort. These have been placed over food plots, crossings and heavily used trails going from bedding areas to feed. The game cameras are starting to show deer with nice velvet coming to feeders during early morning and late evening. Call the Flint Oak office and set up a hunt in the land of the giants. Flint Oak is in Unit 12, so be sure and to request this unit number for your licenses. Flint Oak s 32 nd Annual Hunter Safety Class August 9 & 10, 2014 New enclosed tower deer blind. 6

7 Walton Lodge and Bird Depot Get Renovation The Walton Lodge was updated this spring. In addition to upgraded queen beds, every room has also received a beautifully remodeled bathroom. New granite vanities, under-mount sinks, oil rubbed bronze faucets, and stone backsplashes and flooring all contribute to an upscale and comfortable accommodation in each room. We hope you ll be able to enjoy the Walton Lodge sometime this season and let us know what you think of the recent renovations. The Bird Depot has also undergone a major makeover. The viewing and lobby area where guests can wait to receive their cleaned and packed birds has been gutted and updated with new paint on all the walls, new tile flooring and a new bathroom. This remodel will provide a more pleasant area for guests to see the behind the scenes view of the bird cleaning process. Please be sure to pop your head in this winter to check it out. Limited Junior Memberships Available We have a small number of Junior Memberships still available if you have a special young person who loves the outdoors. We first offered Junior Memberships three years ago after getting numerous phone calls from Members who had a son or daughter who wished to go hunting but the Member was unavailable. At that time we developed this fantastic offering for someone who is of age, and is sponsored by a current Member. They can become a Member for $ annually and receive $ back in Hunt/Fish credits. Since then, we have seen Members purchase Junior Memberships for College Graduation gifts, birthday and Christmas gifts, as well as a reward for a job well done to young colleagues at their place of business. If you have someone special that would enjoy and benefit from being a Flint Oak Junior Member, please contact Nicky or Tiffany in the office and they will get it handled for you. 7 Flint Oak Boards & Trains Dogs Year Around

8 The Master s Is Here By Landon Crow At the end of September the AKC Master National Retriever Trials will be held at Flint Oak and everyone is getting excited. The trial will start Saturday, September 21, 2013 and will continue through Sunday, September 29, The turn out for this event is expected to be huge with over 700 people from all over the nation coming to compete and watch great retrievers at work. So if you love retrievers and would like to come and watch, it would be a treat for the whole family to come spend a day at this great event. Introducing Chef Steve Muncy We here at Flint Oak would like to take a moment to thank all of our valued Members for standing by our side through the modifications. In the restaurant we have had a number of changes in recent years, and although common in this industry, change can be a little difficult. On the upside Flint Oak tries very hard to find top quality employees and creative and inventive Chef s. On that note, we would like to introduce Chef Steve Muncy. Steve formerly worked for Odowd s in Kansas City. Steve took over the Flint Oak kitchen as Executive Chef in May and is looking forward to an amazing hunt season and to meeting all of our Members. Make sure to stop by the restaurant to meet Chef Steve. Aloha! What a fun and eventful turnout we had this year for the Third Annual Flint Oak Luau. To everyone who came out to help us celebrate the Fourth of July in a fun and unique way, a giant Thank You. Flint Oak s amazing bartender, B Reif, prepared awesome and creative drinks to partner with the incredible island food, that left everyone s mouth watering for more. The spunky girls from Tekanihau Nui dancing kept our guests entertained in true island fashion. Another special Thank You to all of you who were brave enough to get up on stage and interact, it was fun. The fireworks show was brilliant and beautiful and definitely brought us back to the reasons we were here to celebrate. 8

9 A Great Retriever Handler and a Great Friend Many people may not know, one of Flint Oak s long working retriever handlers passed away last year. Claude Blakely was always ready for hunting season and to be able to come to Flint Oak with his dogs. When Claude passed away, his wife was looking for a home for his dogs, and thought of Flint Oak. We were overjoyed to hear she donated Claude s male lab Captain to Flint Oak, assured he would have a good home here. So this year when you are on a European or Flint Oak Duck Hunt, and you hear the name Captain called, think of Claude and remember all the hard work and dedication he put in on the handling and guiding at Flint Oak. Thanks again to the Blakely family for the opportunity to care for Captain. The Flint Oak Kennel Staff This hunting is thirsty work; time for a drink of bottled water from Ethan! Field Hunts - What a Wonderful Experience By Rob Roberts Booking a Field Hunt at Flint Oak is just as exciting for the guide as it is for the guest. As a guide we check schedules for you and your buddies - we check out the zone, figure a game plan, how to hunt, sometimes more often than you would think as it gets changed - due to weather, the conditions of our guests, if they have an airport return, a business call, etc. But all in all our goal is to give you the best hunt you can have. Because we know the property and we have some of the best dogs available. You and your guests are picked up at the Lodge at 8:50 for a morning hunt or at 1:20 for an afternoon hunt. Driving up to the Lodge, introducing ourselves, getting to know your party a little better on the drive to the hunting zone helps get an idea on what you expect, which plays into our hunting plan. Once at the cabana your guide will get the dogs ready while the hunters get shells and guns ready and add or subtract clothing, depending on the weather. When all are ready to hunt, the guide lines up the guests, releases the dogs, keeping in mind that everyone must stay in a straight line. Watching the dogs work, watching the birds fly, giving each guest the perfect shot is as much fun for the guide as it is for the Members. Guests and Members ribbing each other about either a missed 9 shot or emptying an eight shot Benelli on a wily rooster that popped up out of nowhere, or a covey rise and they take most of them out of the air, all add to the excitement of the hunt. Real enjoyment is hearing comments on a perfect point or a dog backing in the distance, before your guide flushes the birds for you. Those three hours seem to fly by too quickly. (Just writing this article is really getting me pumped up for hunting season). After the hunt we load up dogs and get the Member and guests headed back to the Lodge. Listening to everyone discussing their hunt on the way back is very informative - your guide is always looking for ways to make your next hunt even better. The hunt will end at the Lodge with a handshake, information from the member on how he wants his birds packed and an orange card for your comments on your stay here. These cards do help us in many ways to make Flint Oak even better. So let s get on the phone and make a reservation to bring your guests and let Flint Oak show you a really good hunting experience.

Hosted by Flint Oak (June 20-23), this is a private shooting preserve that opens to the public in the spring and summer. It s well known for good targets, wide-open spaces and their hospitality. Flint Oak s Manager, Jeff Oakes, brought in Brent Fleming to set the Main Event targets. When Fleming learned that David Rippetoe, owner of Silverleaf Shotgun Sports, Guthrie, OK was available, he invited him to help set the targets Nate Petersen of Shooters Sporting Clays came from Minnesota and set the Oakley Cup and Prelim courses. Petersen also assisted and advised the seven students from Kansas State University s Outdoor and Wildlife Enterprise Management as they each set a station in Sunday s K-State Cup. These students were also referees during the Championship. Flint Oak s Ethan Rimel set the small gauge course, with a new state record of 527 contestants competing. Ethan, Jonas Reed and our two college interns also set the 5-Stand and Super Sporting courses and managed the practice 5-Stand. Among the 255 competitors in the Main Event, Steve Walters shot in the first rotation on Sunday and posted an 86. He felt that he had missed too many and so started home early. Mickey Roberts had an 89 and also left early. Walters was HOA with a 182 and Roberts was runner-up with a 181. 12 Private and Open Driven Pheasant Shoots The driven pheasant shoot, reserved for Europe s royalty and aristocracy until the mid-20th Century, has a long and rich history. The shoot begins with the Horns men. The hunting horns blow notifying the shooters to begin and the beaters, traditionally servants walking through the woods driving the game ahead of them, start pushing the birds towards the shooters. When the birds approach the clearing at the edge of the forest they flush high and fly very, very fast towards the waiting guns providing missile like targets. Traditionally, midway through the hunt, servants brought their masters food and drink and a feast at the castle followed the hunt. Flint Oak s European shoots, in the tradition of those reserved for the kings so long ago, begins with the hunting horns. Flint Oak s rich and diverse background provides a truly exciting pheasant shooting for both the novice and the experienced gun. As the hunters horns sound across the landscape, prepare for the most exhilarating pheasant shoot of your life. True to tradition, food and drink are provided halfway through the hunt, a welcome respite to the shooting. The hunters lunch served at the lodge, rounds out the day. Start planning today for a truly exciting pheasant shooting in Flint Oak s magnificent surroundings. Feel like a king; come to Flint Oak where you are royalty. Flint Oak not only offers a variety of Private European Hunt choices, Flint Oak s Open European Shoot, our Grand Event, is held virtually throughout the Hunt Season (see schedule page 22). The pageantry of this event, the mix of participants, the weather and a myriad of other factors, make each and every shoot unique. The Open European Held on Saturday mornings, this is the granddaddy of our Europeans. It includes a wonderful buffet breakfast, a coffee break around a toasty campfire, a hearty lunch and an equal share of the day s harvest. The European has 39 blinds that surround the hill. Driven to flight, the pheasants fly towards the shooters. Flint Oak s retrievers pick up the harvested pheasants even as you shoot. As each brace completes, you move to a new blind that offers new and different shooting challenges, then the fun starts all over. Shooting the European with a special friend or family member makes memories to last a lifetime. The Open European, scheduled regularly throughout hunt season, is an open shoot; you can book reservations from one to seventy-eight shooters! At the Open Europeans, we serve a variety of buffet lunches to finish off your fantastic European style driven shoot. The Mini-European The Mini, the first private European shoot introduced at Flint Oak, has proven to be very exciting and even sportier than we first anticipated. A twelve blind shoot, it accommodates up to twenty-four shooters. The birds are on the shooters QUICK on the west side (blinds 7 through 12), the forest side. The shooters need to help each other by yelling information to one another. The birds darting through tree openings verify the importance of staying alert at all times. Instinctive snap shooting ability is a real plus. Most of the bag comes from pass shots behind the blinds. Blinds 1 and 6 transition from the forest to the prairie side (blinds 2 through 5). Circling and turning birds provide some long lead shots with the birds in full view and really moving fast! The birds reach such speed that very few birds harvested end up in front of the blind on the prairie side. 12

13 Rich in Tradition, Pageantry and History The Osage The Osage, Flint Oak s newest private European, and 6th European site debuted October 16, Located on the northwest corner of Flint Oak, it lays on a beautiful piece of acreage, with one side heavily populated with trees and overlooking a pond to the west. We named this European after the Osage Indian tribe that camped on Indian Creek, located to the north. The Osage features ten blinds which allows a group of up to twenty to experience this great thrill. The Phoenix The Phoenix was a mythical bird that arose from the smoke and ashes of its own destruction! Thus, we thought it was an appropriate name for this driven shoot because those birds just seem to keep rising and flying despite smoking shotguns! The Phoenix, located on the westerly portion of Flint Oak, accommodates eighteen to thirty- six shooters. More trees and completely different terrain than any of our other Europeans make for a unique shooting experience. The Mecca Webster defines the Mecca as a center of activity sought as a goal by people sharing a common interest. We at Flint Oak certainly hope that is true with our Mecca. Nestled in the upper end of a long brushy draw, sitting among some very large oaks and blackjacks with cedars and oaks in the center, this shoot produces some extremely challenging shots. It also sets astride a creek forking into a bigger creek. The area is a very pretty site. As you move around this shoot from timber to clearings, the variety of shooting opportunities will amaze you. This shoot, unlike some Europeans, is very versatile enabling groups of eight to sixteen shooters to use the shoot. With up to sixteen guns, extra birds will be a blast. 13 Advantages of the European Hunt European shoots are a great way to introduce your friends or business clients to Flint Oak. They are designed for Private groups of all sizes. This type of shoot is ideal for those not able to Field Hunt. When you factor in the unpredictability of Kansas weather, even the most experienced shooter will be challenged, while the novice will have an enjoyable experience hunting with friends. The camaraderie and atmosphere of these shoots is a great tool for team building. With all this in mind, why not schedule your European Shoot soon? To increase the fun and add more shooting pleasure, extra birds may be purchased for each of these shoots except the Open European. The Scottie / Double Scottie Ideal for six to eight shooters, the Scottie lies toward the east and allows smaller groups to enjoy European style shooting. -Or, the Double Scottie differs in the fact that the shooters rotate around the circle twice, giving more shooting opportunity and a second chance at mastering the nuances of each shooting position. A coffee break after the completion of the first rotation enables the shooters to cuss and discuss the blinds and formulate new strategies prior to the second round. The second round s harvest percentages are usually much higher. This shoot is ideal for those small groups of friends or clients that you wish to entertain on a more personal basis.

This event is always a sellout, so get your spots reserved early and have a great time while supporting a great cause. Look, a Smile. Summer Ends And Hunting Season Begins By Landon Crow This summer at the Flint Oak kennel we trained and worked some real nice young dogs for the upcoming hunting season. While on a Field Hunt this upcoming season make sure to watch for those young ones pointing birds for you. Also this summer and spring the kennels were able to make a switch to a different dog food which needs no introduction, Purina Pro Plan Performance. This quality dog food is the top of the line for the working dog. It provides everything that an active dog needs to maintain the body and condition that it takes to work at Flint Oak during the hunt season. So if you are in the market for a great dog food, ask the kennel staff at Flint Oak about the Purina products that are available. Flint Oak proudly uses and recommends these products. 14

16 With the rains, the preserve is in great shape Planting, Rain & Weed Control Result In Great Cover As mentioned in the West Ranch article the Preserve has spent a lot of man hours working on the new additional acreage. Along with that project, work went on as usual at Flint Oak. Food plots were planted with milo again this year, as well as native grasses and with the rain we received this summer the cover is showing great growth. We worked to control the Sumac and Johnson grass in several hunting zones as well and that cover also looks great. Flint Oak has new and abundant zones for Members and their guests to walk or ride a Gator on for Field Hunts, the European are ready to go as well. Also, let s not forget those Duck Hunts that were so popular last year, so book early and often while the dates you want are still available. 16 Kill 2 Birds with 1 Stone at Flint Oak Have you ever wondered how to increase meeting moral? Activities outside of the meeting environment are a great way to increase attendee interaction with one another as well as giving them memories that will last a lifetime. From the most experienced to the least, Flint Oak has something for ALL! So, make your next meeting the BEST EVER! Fishing Your Style By JB Fishing at Flint Oak went very well this summer and will continue into October depending on the weather. Several large Wipers were caught at Indian Lake during guided fishing trips. Large Wipers were also caught at West Lake, where now two people can rent a twoperson boat and fish, in the morning or afternoon/evening hours, without a guide. On Indian Lake several wipers this summer were in the six to nine pound range and large-mouth bass came in around seven pounds. This September we are adding 500 more wipers to Indian and West Lakes to raise the catch of a life time. Center Lake has been doing very well also, seeing several nice size large-mouth bass and every now and then, someone catching a big bertha weighing over eight pounds during spawning time. Come fish all of the Flint Oak waters to see what best fits your style.

17 4th Annual Kansas Salutes the Troops October 18-20, 2013 The Outdoor Recreation Heritage Fund (ORHF) is pleased to announce the 4 th Annual Kansas Salutes the Troops (KSTT) to be held at Flint Oak the weekend of October 18-20, ORHF s mission is to provide healing experiences to veterans, troops, and their families through hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities. Flint Oak s fabulous setting makes it a great venue to bring a few of our nation s heroes. During the past 3 events we have witnessed firsthand the opening up of our veterans in a relaxed atmosphere, and a better understanding for us on what they are dealing with on a day to day basis says, Jeff Oakes Flint Oak s Gen- Help Wanted One of our dogs managed to open her kennel and is now on the loose within the pages of this Update. We need your help to find her before the Hunt Season begins. Be one of the first four to find her, call the office at (calls only please) tell one of the office staff where she is and win a $25.00 Flint Oak gift certificate. Her picture is at right. Look carefully, she s tricky. eral Manager. We have also seen many ongoing friendships built from the 3 days spent together in the field, where you really get to know another guy Oakes goes on to say. ORHF and KSTT committee members have been planning since the first of the year, and they are revving up to make this the greatest event to date with twenty-five warriors in attendance. If you would like to be a part of a magical event please contact the Flint Oak office at for more information. If you would have interest in other ORHF events across the country, please contact Jack Hazel at Summer Shoots By Ethan Rimel The 2013 Social season started out with beautiful weather and a great spring Fun league. A record twelve teams competed over six weeks, beginning April 4. Flint Oak had great turnouts at the charity events, such as Bust-A-Clay for Kid s Sake, Red Cross, YMCA and the Cabela s Family Outdoor Day. June 20 through 23, Flint Oak held the Kansas Sporting Clay Championship. Sporting clay venues were set up across the preserve from literally one side to the other and everywhere in between. Great targets and weather made this shoot a huge success. The month of August kicked off with the 23 rd Annual Boy Scout tournament, which as usual had a great turnout for a great cause. This shoot was followed by the Summer Sizzler, an NSCA registered shoot. Last but not least, Flint Oak hosts the KARL shoot the beginning of September. The 2013 Social Season ends the last of September and puts us at that time of the year to again start Flint Oak s fantastic hunting.

To help you get around Flint Oak s terrain we offer gator hunts that can handle up to three hunters and a guide. The guide chauffeurs you around following the amazing pointing dogs across the beautiful Flint Hills. So if you would like to enjoy the fun of a field hunt, but are hesitant about walking the length of the hunt, or just want the ease of riding a gator, contact Flint Oak and we will be happy to book your Gator hunt for this fall. A Successful Hunt What is the definition of a successful hunt? To many people it is the number of birds, to others it is good dog work and spending an enjoyable day with friends or family. All of these are the definition of a successful hunt. There is nothing more enjoyable than filling your bird bag with the days harvest, so that the walking and hiking of the hunt goes by with ease. Watching dogs working a covey of quail or a running rooster is magical. Having two dogs working back and forth on a snow covered field or even beneath a beautiful blue sky can make the hunt feel special. Family and/or friends is one of the main ingredients to having a successful hunt. A father and son, or grandpa and his granddaughter, or even long time friends just getting together for the weekend. all of these things make a hunt memorable and fun. Just to be able to get together and hunt and be in the great outdoors makes any day a success. 20

21 Individual and Corporate Membership By-Laws Flint Oak offers four (4) kinds of hunt memberships, Individual, Corporate (multiple), Junior or Senior. Individual (Single designee) Individual Memberships shall be issued in the name of an individual or in the name of a business or firm. We limit the reservations we accept to the personnel and facilities we have available. Unlike the airlines, WE DO NOT OVERBOOK! If we accept your reservation, we guarantee that we will have everything required for your activities (just like buying a ticket to a ball-game). We are located deep in the country and do not have passerby business. Our food orders and personnel schedules are made weekly and must be based on advance reservations. Once your reservation is booked, we incur the expense of whatever advance ordering and planning are required. So if you fail to come, or cancel after the expense of preparations has been incurred, what is fair? Should all guests be penalized by increased charges to cover these expenses? Most of our guests believe it is fairer to charge a cancellation fee to those who create the increased cost! HUNT CANCELLATIONS Hunt reservations (whether Field Hunt, European driven shoots or Duck Hunt) m ay b e cancelled at NO CHARGE forty-five (45) days or more in advance. A $100 CANCELLATION FEE per gun will be charged on all hunt reservations cancelled forty-four (44) to thirty-one (31) days in advance.
