9 Contract research 30/4/ /10/2010: Contract research for Endangered Wildlife Trust to collect and analyse data on leopard trade in Limpopo province. These data were used by project leader, Dr Peter Lindsey, to do a Non-detrimental Findings assessment for leopards in South Africa. My role was to collect data for Limpopo province, use all South African data to do a population viability assessment (which was also part of my PhD). Computer literacy 1. Fluent in Microsoft Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access (Databases), Endnote (Citation manager). 2. Limited Linux and Open office experience. Other research software and competence 1. Competed in statistical analysis, including software packages R and SPSS (limited SPSS experience). 2. Competent in GIS analysis and mapping, including software packages ArcGIS 9.3, QGIS and R (via GIS packages). 3. Competent in creating graphs for publications, including software GRACE and Excel. 4. Competent in quantitative ecological analysis, including the use of the following ecological software packages: MARK (Mark Recapture, survival analysis), CAPTURE (Mark recapture), EstimateS (Species Richness estimators), MaxEnt (Species distribution modelling), and R. 10 Other competences 1. First Aid, level one Heavy vehicle licence Code EC, with Professional driving permit (exp 2014) 3. Technical skill in making traps to capture large carnivores, including foot snare throwers and snares as well as capture cages for Leopards, Brown Hyenas, black footed cats, mongooses, etc. Build all the protective boxes for camera traps. Fieldwork experience o Extensive experience in data management and research co-ordination. I have collected camera trapping data for a period of 4 years (> images), collected carnivore scat data for a 4 year period (> 700 scats), collected GPS tracking and predation data which resulted in the finding of over 200 leopard kills, collected genetic data for over 31 leopards in the Waterberg Biosphere, during this period I co-ordinated 2 MSc students, 2 Honours students and 5 intern students to help with data collection. All this data is stored on central data bases which were subsequently used by other students. See below o Extensive experience in off road driving, including vehicle maintenance o Extensive experience working and collecting data in dangerous animal research sites (Collected leopard research data on Welgevonden for a period of 4 years) o Extensive knowledge and field experience on camera trapping methodology, including camera setup, data capture, database management (Microsoft Access), statistical data analysis in R, MARK and CAPTURE camera trapped over ha in Waterberg Biosphere o Extensive knowledge and field experience on carnivore diet analysis using scats; including scat collection, scat cross section and cuticle pattern preparation, identification of prey. Collected and analysed with students: 51 Wild dog, 400 Brown Hyaena, 250 leopard scats in the Waterberg Biosphere o Extensive knowledge on leopard capture using foot snares or capture cages; Captured, collared and took morphometric measurements of leopards. 2005/6/7 & 2010 & 2012 (Trap cages: 6 leopard captures; Foot snares: 10 leopard captures, 21 brown hyenas, one lion, one spotted Hyaena) o Extensive knowledge of GIS analysis of leopard GPS tracking data to locate prey sites in veld; With help of students (E Jooste/R Pitman) we have collected over 250 leopard kills o Extensive knowledge of prey age estimation (African mammals) using teeth and/other morphological remains o Have assisted Dr F Dalerum in the capture and collaring of Aardwolf during fieldwork stints in Benfontein (De Beers Reserve near Kimberly), o Have assisted Welgevonden in the capture of lions for translocation, 2008 o Extensive knowledge of vegetation description o Extensive knowledge of prey abundance estimation via DISTANCE sampling 10

11 List of students which used data I collected or I supervised during their field work My PhD research project quickly crew into a large scale leopard ecology project. I therefore realised that I could collect data on various carnivores without compromising my PhD work. I therefore designed and conducted (later with help of students) my PhD research in such a way to contribute data, either full or partial, to other post graduate students. Below is a current list of students using data I collected during my PhD. 1. Michelle Thorn. UP Post doc. Using Brown Hyaena camera trapping data from game farms I collected during my PhD 2. Esmarie Jooste. MSc Wildlife Management. Supervisor: Prof W van Hoven. Used GPS tracking and kill data 3. Liza Isaacs. MSc Wildlife Management. Supervisor: Prof M Somers Co-supervised with L H Swanepoel. Civet and Mesocarnivore data from Camera trapping from PhD 4. Janelle Bashant. MSc Wildlife Management. Supervisor: Prof M Somers Co-supervised with Dr F Dalerum. Brown Hyaena camera trapping data from PhD and scats I collected during my field work. 5. Laura Tensen. MSc Wildlife Management. Supervised by Dr Dick Roelofs (VU Amsterdam) and Prof Ian Gaigher (Lajuma Research Centre). Used genetic samples I collected during my PhD 6. Ross Pitman. BSc Honors. Supervised by Dr P Ramsey (Plymouth University). Used all the GPS tracking data from PhD to find and model leopard kills. 7. Jason Mulvaney. BSc Honors. Supervised by Dr P Ramsey (Plymouth University). Used all the leopard scats collected which he supplemented with his own to determine leopard diet in Waterberg Biosphere. 8. Ramnanan, R. BSc Honors. Supervised by Prof M Somers Co-supervised with L H Swanepoel. Used all wild dog pictures from camera trap data base and scats I collected during my PhD.
