5 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Members, It s been an active first quarter of the year! There were a few of you that I did not get to see in Las Vegas. For those that made it, I hope you had a great time and did not get lost on the floor too often. For those that did not make it, what a show! Attendance was up by over 6,000! There were hundreds of new outfitters that could not fit in a space as small as Reno. It took me one day just to see the top floor. The next day I did the bottom floor. The SCI Annual National Convention was half over and I have just barely walked it! With meetings and events, it was a challenge to see it all. The entertainment was great. What was even more amazing, the aisles and set up were so large, it never looked crowded! I hope to see you in Reno next year! This quarter we have also had our ninth Greater Bay Area fundraiser in conjunction with the Golden Gate chapter another must-attend event with some terrific hunting opportunities auctioned. I hope you were one of the successful bidders. The general raffle was the best I have seen (thanks to Jeana Rolsky-Feige). Remember the funds we raise go to provide on the ground financial support to local projects as well as contribute to SCI National projects. If you haven t been to the fundraiser in a while you do owe it to yourself to get there next year mark your calendar for March 2, The annual Wild Game Dinner is coming up May 20 in San Jose at the Three Flames Restaurant. Our chef, AJ Szenda, promises an even better menu than the one we all thought was terrific last year. One of our avid anglers is promising a fresh yellowfin tuna. If you have something you would like to showcase, please get it to Dwight s office on Bay Road in Redwood City before May 10. We need your photos of hunts around the world and entries by May 6. See pages 14 to 16 for all the information. In our last issue, we had the story about the great chapter hunt at the Tim Reich Ranch in Wyoming. Having participated in that (and as Lisa took her first big game animal there) I highly recommend that venue to hunt. Where would you like to see a Chapter hunt for this year? I would target a place that could comfortably accommodate about 8 hunters. Please get back to me at tommatt@safariclub-sfbay.org with your ideas and recommendations. Then be ready to sign up because spaces in the chapter hunts always go fast! Hunting with friends is one of the great joys of our sport. Along with chapter member Cam Greig, I am proud to have a seat on SCI s Conservation Committee. At the committee meeting in Memphis recently, seven new conservation projects were approved, bringing our worldwide total to 70 projects! When folks ask why they should join SCI and the Chapter, remind them of our dedication and involvement in conservation in North American and around the globe. After watching Martina McBride s terrific performance, it was particularly rewarding to hear she donated back her entire performance fee of $12,500 to SCI Conservation! I thank all of you who wrote letters on behalf of Fish & Game President Dan Richards. SCI is the foremost organization in the world defending hunters rights. SCI National had a link to the Dan Richards issue on the front page of the website. There is no organization in the world defending your right to hunt more than SCI both here and abroad. No organization has the breadth of conservation projects around the world like SCI. Many members of the chapter have participated in the Blue Bag program through Safari Club International Foundation. I thank you and salute you. If your friends are members of single specie organizations, please take a moment to share with them what SCI/SCIF does for hunting, conservation and humanitarian issues globally. Ask them to join our Chapter! Tell each and every person, SCI is First For Hunters. See you in the Field! Tom Mattusch San Francisco Bay Area President 5

13 YEAR OF THE PIG SPEAKER Mark your calendar - July 21, 2012 Mark Hainds speaks about pig hunting Mark J. Hainds is a life-long hunter who grew up as the sixth generation on the Hainds Family Farm in north Missouri. He received a BS in Forestry Management from the University of Missouri, and a MS in Forest Biology from Auburn University. Mark has studied and worked to restore the longleaf forests of the southeastern US for approximately two decades while holding dual positions with Auburn University and The Longleaf Alliance. Feral hogs are a recurring management challenge in the southeast, and in the Chinese Calendar Year of the Pig - Mark set himself the goal of killing at least one feral pig in ten different states. This challenge is documented in his book Year of the Pig, which was published September 1st, 2011 by the University of Alabama Press. Mark is touring his book across the country and on July 21st, he will stop in to discuss the hunts, the weapons, and the characters he encountered while pursuing pigs in: Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, California, Arkansas, Tennessee, Hawaii, Oklahoma, Georgia, and Missouri. More information on the presentation by Mark will be ed and online at Feral pigs threaten vast portions of U.S. ecosystems, so Hainds, a forester, did good by spending 2007 hog-hunting in 11 states. Hainds anecdotes, titled by a tree of each different ecosystem, wield dry humor and the admirable values of a farmer s son to critique the current state of hunting. His sympathetic intelligence suffuses this seriously funny nonfiction. Sierra Club GOT TECH-ACHE? CALL TODAY! We all have painful times with our computers. 17 RIDING THE BIG WAVES One of the highlights of the day was when the 55- foot HuliCat, one of the film production boats, nearly got clipped. On what would have been the last take, the Huli was positioned inside and was motoring out to the channel. A swing set came through and sent the boat launching into the air, giving all onboard the ride of their lives. (ESPN) Mavericks is a world-renowned big wave break located near Pillar Point Harbor, and is host to the Mavericks surf contest (mavsurfer.com). Since the early 1990s, when the local spot was introduced to the world, Mavericks has become an epicenter of modern big-wave surfing. Currently a movie is being made about one of the big wave surfers, Jay Moriarty. Jay died, not here, but, ironically on a diving accident in the Indian Ocean. The movie Of Men and Mavericks stars Johnny Weston, Gerard Butler and Elisabeth Shue and is due out October Since the HuliCat is always the media boat for the Mavericks surf contest (mavsurf.com), the production company asked for the boat and it s owner Captain Tom Mattusch to serve as a staging platform, carry people, equipment, supplies and have a camera on board. It was all routine and repetitive until this big wave caught us, said Tom. 17

18 CUBS SHOOTING PROGRAM What does the SCI Cubs youth program have to offer current or new SCI members with eligible youths 8-18 years of age? Mentoring in safe gun handing, shooting skills, and ethical sport hunting is certainly a big part of the program. The Cubs program provides one-onone personal or small group firearms training. Meeting other youth with similar interests is another. The Cubs program currently has 41 members throughout the membership range. This letter is an open invitation for you to sponsor a youth into the SCI San Francisco Bay Area Cubs program. This program is fully funded by the San Francisco Bay Area chapter of SCI and the NRA. Your sponsorship means that a youth in your family is offered the opportunity to learn the basics of safe shooting and the importance of hunting not only as part of our heritage but also one aspect of good conservation. Select the type of instruction you want to have your youth join in: rifle or shotgun. Sporting clays or trap (shotgun) has been most popular in the past. Center fire and rim fire rifles are other options. All range fees, safety equipment, ammo, and firearms will be provided at no cost to the youths. Youths are encouraged to bring their personal firearms. Opportunities for pheasant hunting are also part of the Cubs program. We currently hunt Hasting Island Hunting Preserve. Guide, dogs, and 1-2 hunt mentors will accompany 2-4 youths on these hunts. Parents are also welcome to follow along in the field. Hunts are usually conducted on weekends as morning hunts of 3-hour durations. Youth shotguns and safety equipment are provided. There is no cost for these hunting opportunities. It is suggested that youths have several shotgun training sessions before scheduled hunts to increase the probability of a positive, successful hunting experience. As a hunter or pro-hunting friend, you know that our youth are the future of all hunting, shooting, and wildlife conservation. A recent study by The National Shooting Sports Foundation revealed that, nationally, for every 100 hunters lost only 69 hunters take their place or 69% hunter replacement ratio. In California right now the ratio is slightly higher (82%) but we need to constantly increase our work in getting kids involved the younger the better! By the time kids are in middle school they are rapidly getting pulled into computer games and other organized sports. Start young and stay healthy, learn to respect nature. SCI San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is doing its part in this recruitment effort by providing firearms and shooting instruction along with mentored hunting opportunities. If the Cubs program interests you and your youths, call or for additional information on how to get involved. Buck Buchanan Cell: buckb@safariclub-sfbay.org SCI Cubs Youth Shooting Sports Coord. 19 NRA FOUNDATION YOUTH GRANT AWARDED TO SCI-SFBA The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of SCI was awarded a National Rifle Association Foundation Youth Grant for ammunition and other supplies in This NRA Foundation Grant assisted SCI-SFBA chapter in building and expanding our Cubs Shooting Program for youth 7 to 18. The Cubs have regular monthly scheduled youth shooting activities consisting of shotgun or rifle training. There are also informal youth shotgun competition and training opportunities at various events such as the Annual Bob Bergstrom BBQ. In , SCI SFBA has introduced and mentored more than 200 youths 7-18 years of age in safe gun handling, shooting skills and shooting sports, and, especially, ethical hunting. Many of these youths have had no previous exposure to firearms. SCI SFBA and the NRA Foundation are making a positive impact with youths. Please extend your support for both organizations. Contact SCI SFBA Cubs Program: buckb@safariclub-sfbay.org Contact NRA Foundation at: HOW SCI SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA CUBS PROGRAM HAS INFlUENCED OUR FAMIly Participating in the Safari Club International Cubs program has been a wonderful experience for my 15 year old son, Clayton. In addition, it has sparked an interest in the entire family to shoot together. Clayton had wanted to learn to shoot and hunt ever since he was a little boy, but my husband and I did not have any experience with guns or hunting. When he decided to quit playing football, he was able to add a new activity to his schedule. He wanted to learn to shoot. I felt the best place to start was with a Hunter Safety class. This is how I met Buck Buchanan and he introduced us to SCI SFBA Cubs. Clayton was hooked from the first day at the rifle range. Since then he has enjoyed shooting handguns and trap. His trap shooting experience culminated with two pheasant hunting trips with a group of SCI SFBA Cub members. Buck has developed Clayton s skills and confidence to become a competent and safe firearms enthusiast. In addition, he has involved the rest of the family in this fun family sport. My husband enjoyed participating in the pheasant hunts and our 11 year old daughter has learned how to shoot safely. Now that Clayton has learned to shoot, I ve decided it is my turn to participate in the fun. We never would have become so involved in the sport of shooting if it wasn t for Buck and the SCI SFBA Cub program. I can t thank Buck enough. Sue Frieders Clayton Frieders 19

21 BLACK POINT CHUCKAR HUNT A number of San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of Safari Club International Members got together for a chukar hunt at Black Points Sports Club with Mike Sutsos. Judging by the expressions here getting ready for lunch, it is hard to say which was more entertaining, the 200 chukar or the lunch! The hunt started by using Black Points highly trained and responsive dogs. About mid morning, the group headed for the well-outfitted clubhouse for a break and then a repeat of the early morning hunt. Some of the hunters brought their own dogs and they went out to look for stragglers after the second hunt. Everyone made it back to the club house by about 11:20 and were treated to a nice hot chukar leg and thigh starter, expertly marinated and cooked to perfection by Mike Sutsos and his crew. Lunch was an oversized rib eye, medium rare, wild rice and salad, with French bread and butter. Chocolate biscotti rounded out dessert. For those still willing, clay pigeons were ready to hone your skill on after lunch. 21

23 SCI FOUNDATION TESTIFIES IN SUPPORT OF INTERNATIONAL WILDLIFE CONSERVATION FUNDING Washington, DC Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) testified today in front of the U.S. House of RepresentativesFisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs Subcommittee of the House Natural Resources Committee in support of H.R. 50, the Multinational Species Conservation Funds Reauthorization Act of 2011 which would extend funding for important conservation projects until the year It was an honor to testify before the committee today, and I hope that our message was clear: that these projects are a needed investment for sustainable wildlife conservation, said Joseph Hosmer, President of SCIF. Support for international conservation projects is necessary for the continued growth of wildlife populations and stability of rural economies throughout many nations of Africa and Asia. As a result of the funding from the U.S. Congress, many grants, matching contributions, and in-kind funds have been donated to these programs from other organizations, host countries, and conservation groups. For example, as a result of the 2009 Congressional appropriation of $2 million for the African Elephant Conservation Fund, over $11.2 million in matching funds were received from outside sources and went to fund 33 African elephant projects. 24 NOTICE TO THE WILDLIFE IMPORT/EXPORT COMMUNITY February 24, 2012 Subject: Import of Sport-hunted Trophies Subject to Quotas, Tagging and Marking Background: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is aware of confusion and miscommunication regarding the import of sport-hunted trophies that are subject to quotas under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES). The Service wishes to remind the trade that under U.S. CITES regulations at 50 CFR Part 23, CITES specimens must be appropriately marked and be accompanied by valid original CITES documents. These CITES regulations, revised in 2007, incorporate CITES resolutions affecting international trade in sport-hunted trophies and are not new requirements. In addition, the special rule for the African elephant under the Endangered Species Act provides for CITES marking requirements. The Service has encountered problems with CITES specimens subject to quotas and marking including leopard, Nile crocodile and African elephant. Leopard tagging requirements for skins and mounted sport-hunted trophies: Each raw or tanned skin must have a self-locking tag inserted through the skin and permanently locked in place using the locking mechanism of the tag. The tag must indicate the country of origin, the number of the specimen in relation to the annual quota, and the calendar year in which the specimen was taken in the wild. A mounted sport-hunted trophy must be accompanied by the tag from the skin used to make the mount. African elephant tusk marking requirements: The trophy (tusks) must be legibly marked by means of punch dies including: Country of origin using ISO codes followed by the last two digits of the year of registration and the weight of raw ivory to the nearest kilogram. Any mark must be placed on the lip mark area and indicated by a flash of color which serves as a background for such mark. Nile crocodile tagging requirements for skins and mounted sport-hunted trophies: Each raw or tanned skin must have a non-reusable tag inserted through the skin and locked in place using the locking mechanism of the tag. The tag must be permanently stamped with the two-letter ISO code for the country of origin, a unique serial number, a standardized species code, and the year of production or harvest. A mounted sport-hunted trophy must be accompanied by the tag from the skin used to make the mount. The tag information or tusk marking as noted above must be recorded on the accompanying CITES document. This information is generally placed in the description block or special conditions block of the CITES document. In addition, for leopard and African elephant, the number of the specimen to be exported in relation to the current year quota must be shown on the CITES export document (in block 11 of the CITES standardized document). If the specimen was harvested and/or registered in a different year than the year in which it was exported, this information will be different than the information on the CITES tag or tusk marking. If the permit is issued in a different year than the year of export, this information must reflect the year of export. Export quota information is not required on CITES re-export certificates. Action: Sport-hunted trophies imported into the United States that do not comply with the marking, tagging or CITES document requirements are subject to refusal of entry or seizure. 28 MISSION STATEMENT FOR SAN FRANCISCO SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL To promote good fellowship among those who love the outdoors and the sport of hunting, shooting and fishing. To promote conservation of the wildlife of the world as a renewable resource in which hunting is one management tool among many. To help conservation efforts by supporting worthwhile projects, both verbally and financially, when possible. To educate our youth in the safe and proper use of firearms and to interest and teach them in conservation and preservation of the forests and animals, which are our national heritage. To share the latest hunting experiences and information of our members so that other members may profit from same. To operate the association as a non-profitable organization, originated for the enjoyment of the members, and with the thought in mind that perhaps we can be of assistance in helping to conserve and preserve the animals which we love to hunt today for those who will come to love the sport tomorrow.
