13 English Translation Title: Danger in the Bush Author & Illustrator: Queenie Brennan Out in the bush in Arnhemland, it is really quiet and nobody has ever been there. You can hear all kinds of birds and you can see lots of buffalo grazing on the plains at the waterholes. At night time you can hear the dingo howling. That means that it is mating time for all the animals. When the sun is out you can hear rustling in the grass. This could be a kangaroo going for water, or a goanna looking for turtle eggs. At the billabong you can hear the geese singing out or it could be two pelicans having an argument about water. But in this water country, there is always danger. The man-eating crocodile or alligator sit and wait in their hiding place for a kangaroo or buffalo. The buffalo isn't frightened of anything except the man-eater. If a lot of them attack one buffalo, well it is bad luck for him. But not if only one maneater attacks. The buffalo can drag him out of the water and take him out to the plain. There he can kill the man-eater. The buffalo is king of the plain country but the maneater crocodile is king of the water country. That's how it is in the bush. You can have a lot of fun in the bush, but there can be a lot of danger there too. 12
