2 HISTORY 11 April 1995 Pro-tem committee meeting held in Zoo Negara. MAZPA 's constitution was drafted by Mr Nawayai Yasak(Zoo Melaka), Mr Mohd Talkah Othman(Zoo Johor), Dr Kevin Lazarus(Zoo Taiping), Dr Mat Naim Hj Ramli (Zoo Negara) dan Mr Peter Yeo(Zoo Negara). 10 Jun 1997 Inaugural Annual General Meeting was held in Panggung Akuarium Tunku Abdul Rahman, Zoo Negara. The Main Committee elected was as follows : Chairman Vice Chairman Treasurer Secretary - En Idris Abd Malik - En Mohd Nawayai Yasak - Dr Kevin Lazarus - En Peter Yeo 5 Dis 1996 MAZPA received CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRY from ROS (Registrar of Societies)

8 Accreditation Sub-committee To formulate an accreditation policy and guidelines to encourage members to adhere to the highest standards of zoo management. This accreditation will look beyond the compliance to minimum standards currently enforced by law. Members will be audited on a voluntary basis to achieve this certification.
9 Education sub-committee Organize activities among MAZPA members related to education Sub committee is called AMAZED Holds an annual seminar for education, where presentations from within MAZPA and invited speakers are discussed
10 Species Management Plan (SMP) Sub-committee To formulate strategies for long term survival of endangered species through captive programmes. Select endangered Malaysian species to be prioritized. Active collaboration with member zoos and the Wildlife Department on selected species such as : Malayan Tapir - Hornbills Serow - Pheasants Small Cats - Milky Stork False Gharial
11 Training Sub-Committee To organize courses related to animal husbandry and management. Create opportunities for zookeepers to developed skills and gain experience. MAZPA Keepers Field Training Course conducted annually. Other training courses as necessary eg ZIMS, Enrichment
12 Marketing Sub-Committee To plan strategies to market all MAZPA members.
13 Minimum Standards In 2010 the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 Act 716 was passed Among others this Act also regulates zoo, and minimum standards and zoo guidelines were established for zoos to comply MAZPA was actively involved in this Objective was to raise the standards of zoo management in the country Audits are done annually by DWNP together with MAZPA before zoo licence is issued

22 Guidelines On the Use of Captive Elephants in Malaysia A set of standards to regulate the daily use of captive elephants in Malaysia in terms of performances and presentations, rides and interactive programs. Discourage practices that may pose a risk to human/animal alike, safety and/or a possible risk to animal welfare. Zoos should comply with the minimum requirements for animal welfare and aim for best practices in animal welfare.
23 Field Training Course MAZPA organizes comprehensive Field Training Courses for our members animal care staff. The course takes place over ten days and concentrates mainly on the biology, husbandry and management of a number of different animal groups housed in local institutions. A large part of the training is practical and teaches a variety of skills (such as restraint and enrichment) which can be utilized by staff when they return to their own institution All course material and teaching costs are covered by the host zoo with MAZPA meeting the costs of food and related expenditure for participants. Participating institutions are responsible only for their travel and their accommodation. For non MAZPA members a registration fee of USD per head is charged. So far a total of 9 Field Training Courses have been conducted. All facilitators are drawn from within MAZPA on a voluntary basis.
