2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES After attending this workshop, all students will be able to: Discuss the meaning of conservation and extinction. Describe ways in which animals and plants are endangered around the world. Most students will be able to: Understand that through conservation projects, species can be protected. Discuss the role of Zoos and the part that they play in protecting wildlife. Some students will be able to: Make connections between their own actions in every-day life and the impact that these have on animals and plants. Explain how Chester Zoo is working to conserve endangered species. Understand that every person can help. There are fewer than 700 Eastern Black Rhino left in the wild

LESSON PLAN Using real artefacts (many of which have been confiscated by HM Customs and Excise), students will gain hands-on experience and knowledge of conservation issues such as poaching.

3 LESSON PLAN Using real artefacts (many of which have been confiscated by HM Customs and Excise), students will gain hands-on experience and knowledge of conservation issues such as poaching. We will show how litter becomes a problem for wildlife in the ocean as students attempt to form a timeline of how long their items of rubbish take to biodegrade in the ocean. We will also discuss climate change and deforestation using case-studies of species found in Chester Zoo. It s not all doom and gloom though! Conservation can help, and so we ll demonstrate what Chester Zoo does to actively help the Black Rhino in Kenya, and discuss what each and every one of us can do to help the environment during our daily lives. IMPORTANT NOTE: BIO-ARTEFACT CONTACT Some Discovery Workshops MAY include a selection of bio-artefacts. Please inform us in advance of any allergies or phobias that may be affected by this. An antibacterial foam handwash will be offered to all students at the end of the workshop. The online Chester Zoo Annual Report gives additional information concerning our collection and our conservation work within the Zoo, in the UK and overseas. PLANNING A ROUTE: ANIMALS DISCUSSED DURING WORKSHOP The following species are discussed in the session and can be seen in the Zoo: Scimitar-horned Oryx, rhinos, jaguars, tigers, elephants, tortoises, orangutans (Realm of the Red Ape), turtles (Spirit of the Jaguar), snakes (Realm of the Red Ape, Secret World of the Okapi and Tropical Realm), Partula snails (models and information in Islands in Danger), clownfish (Aquarium), penguins, caiman (Tropical Realm) and penguins. 5 SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES TO WORK DURING VISIT: Look out for Act for Wildlife banners around the Zoo, underneath many of which can be found further information related to Chester Zoo s conservation field work. The Wildlife Garden may of interest as an example of how the Zoo attempts to inspire visitors to get involved in conservation. The Acting Locally exhibit focuses on native species and their conservation. The interpretation in the Spirit of the Jaguar exhibit focuses on the conflict between humans and Jaguars in the Pantanal. At Chimpanzees there are information signs outlining the conservation work that the Zoo supports in Gashaka-Gumti National Park, Nigeria. Many of our animals have identification signs which include the conservation status of this animal according to the IUCN Red List. One of Chester Zoo s everpopular Meerkats!
