2 I.INTRODUCTION The RCGW as an association having its main tasks in the protection of great apes, it has set the strategy routine patrol in the various sectors to identify the presence of these animals in their natural environments. To get five areas are distributed so far on the extent where RCGW is operational in this research component. This is Byamba, Bikenge, Kilambo Besse and Ihimbi / Bukonde. This report represents the results of observations on large pendants monkeys two months: July and August Location: for the month of July, the monitoring activities took place in two sectors among others Ihimbi in northern and Byamba in the southern part of the reserve Materials and working techniques for success, the following materials and techniques were used: Material: machetes, kitchen utensils, food intake... These materials were mobilized by the trackers who continue to sacrifice their little means is they for the advancement of project activities. Technique: observation (direct, indirect, observation clew) allowed the collection of data presented in this report Work context: the monitoring activities took place in a difficult logistical and climatic conditions. A failure to see lack of field equipment is seen in all sectors and negatively not only plays on the proper functioning of forest activities; but also the health of staff responsible for implementing this activity. In terms of weather conditions; July is still known in the community as the beginning of the rainy season. Thus, for this period of work, the rain was too heavy so that the work was interrupted before the specified time Summary presentation of data: monitoring activities have focused on some key elements which form the backbone of this summary report. This is among other things: Data on the gorillas and chimpanzees; Data on other animals observed; Data on human activities in the reserve. As data on great apes, a number of 39 individuals Gorillas and Chimpanzees 9 individuals were observed indirectly through the nests and other signs in the presence of Byamba and Ihimbi sector. Other animals were also observed besides the great apes and the most important of which are summarized in the following lines of this report. Human activities in the reserve have also attracted the attention of trackers. Thus, 49 traps were also observed in the affected sites. CRGW: Activity Report of Monitoring Apes August 2014 page 2

4 III. CHALLENGES - Very heavy rains throughout the patrol period; exposing them to all kinds of trackers forest weather; - Insufficient bush hardware (bunch, dinner services, medical kit, food intake, raincoats, blankets or sleeping bag...) that submits the trackers for different types of difficulties in the forest; IV. RECOMMENDATIONS - Equip all sectors bush materials and equipment to allow for safety at work in the forest trackers; - Organize an inventory on animals in order to have an estimate on the families of gorillas found in the reserve; - Organize an inventory of plants to determine the role of each plant goes into the diets of gorillas. - Educate communities for regulating hunting and trapping activities through advocacy, otherwise undermine the organization's objectives.
