2 RR & GC JULY NEWSLETTER Roseburg Rod & Gun Club 875 Old Del Rio Road Roseburg Oregon CLUB UPDATE Earl Skonberg BASIC PISTOL / CHL Doug White Membership One last reminder that your membership for the coming year (2016/2017) is due by July 1, Those that miss the deadline will have their gate codes turned off and will require one week to turn it back on. Please don t wait! Mixed Steel Match Omar Newburg started a Mixed Steel Match on June 18 th and will continue on the 3 rd Saturday of each month until further notice. Various outdoor pistol range bays will be used. For those who wish to practice their shooting techniques with a center fire handgun, this program is for you. Participants will practice draw, movement, reloading, and engaging multiple target arrays under pressure of time. Five practice stages, four stationary, and the other will have movement with multiple shooting positions. We will shoot both stationary and falling steel targets. This is an excellent introduction to shooting a handgun for competition. Equipment required: A safe, serviceable 9mm/38 Special handgun minimum. Holster & belt. (No cross draw or shoulder holsters.) At least 2-3 magazines or speed loaders. Five stages using 60 rounds minimum along with ear & eye protection for all shooters and spectators a must. Fee is $5.00. Pavilion and Lower Grounds I am sure by now most of you have noticed the increase in the usage of the lower grounds picnic area and pavilion. This year alone we have reservations for 13 weddings and other events that include Reunions, several local Car Clubs, and sadly to say, a couple of Memorials. We hope these events haven t inhibited members use of the facilities too much, but income from these rentals help pay for the daily operation of the club and keeps your membership fees to a minimum. Several changes have been made in the program over the past two months and we will no longer be teaching the NRA program. NRA made major changes in how they conduct their program and we simply are unable to meet these changes with our volunteer-run program. We have revamped the program and are teaching NRA information with materials which have been designed to better suit our program. We have included a segment on Conceal Carry Law highlighting do s and don t. We have recruited several new ROs/coaches for the program, however we could still use a few more volunteers. Lastly, we now require prepayment for classes prior to being placed on a class roster and are non-refundable. Personal check or money order only! No Cash please. CAST BULLET MATCH Mel Harris The June 4 th Cast Bullet Match was afforded another nice day to shoot. Last month we did 10 shot groups at 100 and 200 yards. This month we decided to shoot a score match at 100 and 200 yards. The Heavy Rifle Class had 6 shooters and Roy Jenkins won his 2 nd match of the year and had a perfect 200 at 100 yds. Close behind was Chuck Allen with Virgil Edwards from the Portland area finishing 3 rd. We had shooters from Portland, Eugene-Springfield and Roseburg. Want to shoot with us? 3 DEFENSIVE PISTOL Jeff Willeke Warm weather aside, the June Roseburg Defensive Pistol Shoot drew 28 shooters that made for 5 comfortably-sized squads. Skills and situational challenges kept things moving and we were able to finish-up before noon. It was starting to get hot, so all appreciated an early finish. A note of appreciation to all DP shooters for their willingness to stay a few extra minutes to help break down the stages and put away the props is very commendable. We are glad to have the help and are grateful for their continued interest in the DP program. Thank you! We are looking forward to the next DP shoot, which will be Saturday, July 2, At that shoot, we will have a stage in which either a carbine or a pistol can be used. Signup is between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. The Safety Briefing will be at 8:45 a.m. All shooters are required to attend the Safety Briefing. Shooting will start at 9:00 a.m. More information about Roseburg Defensive Pistol, including a printable signup form, group sign-up, fees, safety and equipment requirements can be found at our website: Roseburg Defensive Pistol is a community service program. Its intent is to provide members of the community a venue to practice, maintain, and improve skills with their personal defense firearms without pressure or competition in a safe, supervised environment. The program is available the first Saturday of each month from April through October.

4 JUNE RIMFIRE MATCH Wes Jackson Six shooters made it to the June Rimfire Match. At 50 yds only two shooters were able to get a 250 with Jay Conn and Roy Jenkins tied for first with 15Xs each and Chuck Allen third with Xs. At 75 yds four shooters were able to get 250 with Jay Conn taking first with 8Xs, Wes Jackson second with 7Xs and Chuck Allen third with 5Xs. Final scores had Jay Conn taking first with Xs, Chuck Allen second with Xs and Wes Jackson third with Xs. The next match will be July 3 rd. Changing winds and mirage effects were enough to affect scores and no one was able to shoot a perfect 500. At 100 yards two shooters were able to get a 250 with Jay Conn leading with 19Xs, Mel Harris second with 16Xs and Jim Stine third with a Xs. At 200 yards no one could manage to shoot a 250. In first place was Wes Jackson with Xs, second was Jim Stine with Xs and Jay Conn third with Xs. Final results had Wes Jackson first with Xs, Jay Conn second with Xs and Jim Stine third with Xs. 5 YHEC Success! Our congratulations to Lila for an outstanding performance and her dedication in the YHEC youth program. As a club sponsor, I am sure all our members, along with the Board of Directors wish her the best in the upcoming National competition. In her own words My name is Lila Ferguson. I am 15 years old, and involved in YHEC (Youth Hunter Education Challenge). YHEC is a NRA program for youth hunters, and it features 8 knowledge and shooting events. In the.22 RiKle and Muzzleloader courses, we shoot at small steel silhouette and gong targets at 3 different ranges and Kiring positions. We shoot ofkhand at 25 yards, sitting at 50 yards, and prone at 75 yards. The Shotgun event challenges shooters with a 30 target course of sporting clays. The Archery event is a walk through course with thirty 3D targets and a scoring method. In Wildlife IdentiKication, we must identify tracks, hides, feathers, and wildlife signs of North American game. For Hunter Safety Trail, we must demonstrate safe Kirearm handling and provide knowledge of Oregon game laws in a hunting situation. In the Orienteering course, we prove that we know how to navigate with just a map and compass by Kinding bearings, pacing distances, providing knowledge of maps, and reading a compass. Finally, we have a Hunter Responsibility Exam consisting of questions that test our knowledge of hunter safety, ethics, responsibility, laws, and issues. ProKiciency in each of these events is necessary to gain a high enough score to place in the top Kive. There are two divisions, the Junior division which is age 15 and under, and the Senior division which is ages The Kive participants with the highest scores in each division compose the Oregon National team, which gets to represent Oregon at Internationals. Internationals is held at two alternating NRA campus locations, last year it was in Boca Raton, New Mexico, this year it is in MansKield, Pennsylvania. I earned the overall position of 4th in the Junior division at the state YHEC competition on June 11th and 12th. I placed third in both.22 RiKle and Orienteering, and second in Muzzleloader. I earned my spot on the national team, and I, along with my team members, will be representing Oregon at YHEC Internationals on the of July, I have been a member of this gun club for almost a year and a half, and I have been shooting sporting clays almost every week, and practicing archery,.22, and Muzzleloader as much as possible. I believe my devotion to practice and study helped earn my place on the team. I would like to thank the Roseburg Rod and Gun Club their donation that helped cover the cost of my equipment upgrades and ammunition. I appreciate the the opportunity the Gun Club has given me and the Douglas County group to practice, and gain wisdom from the many other members, who have taken their time to give us tips and guidance.
