AT THE CLUBHOUSE THE DEFENSIVE MINDSET: BY: DENNIS BLANCHARD CHIEF RANGE SAFETY OFFICER, NRA INSTRUCTOR: Last time we talked about the Willingness to Use Force in Self-Defense. Now let us talk about the next step, Determination to Never Give Up. It s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog The single most crucial factor in prevailing in a life-threatening encounter is the determination to persevere and win. You must acquire the attitude that if forced to fight, YOU WILL NEVER GIVE UP. This attitude of gritty determination is important for several reasons. First, such as attitude, manifested in your speech, eye contact and body language, can throw doubt and fear into a potential assailant, deterring him or her from mounting an attack. If an assault is initiated, sometimes a strong, determined response will cause it to be broken off. There have been many cases of citizens who, though grievously wounded in a criminal attack, REFUSED TO GIVE UP, and survived their injuries. The will to persevere and prevail imbues your efforts with greater power, confidence and effectiveness. Next time, Developing a Plan! Until next time then, thank you for your time. 2 ROSEBURG GUN DOUGLAS CO. FAIRGROUNDS ON Feb/12 & Feb/13: Our Raffle drawing was held on Sunday, Feb 13th at 2:45 pm at the Gun Show. The Winner of the Custom Ruger rifle is: Our member KEN CANON, The Club will realize a profit, after all costs of over $1, from this Raffle, thanks to all Members that participated in the Raffle, these funds allow the Club to provide more services to the membership, without a raise in membership dues or fees. Members have won 2 out of 3 raffles we have had. SAWDUST JUBILEE WILL BE HELD IN RIDDLE ON JULY 3RD & 4TH, 2011: The South Umpqua Rod & Gun Club will have a booth at the Sawdust Jubilee event in Riddle, in conjunction with the Riddle Car Show. We will be holding a Raffle for a 22/22 Mag Heritage Revolver that will be drawn on July 4th at 3:30 pm at the Riddle Fire Sta. We will be conducting a ping pong throw into the cylinder holes of an engine block. Our booth will be next to a booth for the Riddle Fire Department Youth Hunter Safety Program. We will need volunteers for our booth, if you are interested, please call Calvin at and let him put you on the schedule. We will open at 9 am and close at 5 pm on Saturday, July 3rd; and open at 9 am and close at 4 pm on Sunday, July 4th. MEMBER SALES TABLE WILL BE AT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS: The Executive Board has established a Sales Table at our General Membership meetings to allow members to sell or trade items. This affords members a platform to exhibit a Rifle or Pistol or other items of shooting sport accessories that they have to offer for sale or trade. (ie. Holster, Reloading Equipment, Scopes, etc) This table was available at our last two meetings, and will be at our future General Membership meetings. There will not be any charge for this and it is offered as another service to our membership. We will gladly accept any donations that members may want to give to the Club, upon a sale. WE HAVE A NEW BANNER FOR: THE SOUTH UMPQUA VIGILANTES: This banner will be placed at our new Cowboy Action/Defensive Pistol range which is under construction. The banner was donated by Toni Cook, along with three other small banners that will be used by the Club for activities and events. Our thanks to Toni. DRAINAGE STUDY OF THE SHOOTING RANGES IS UNDERWAY: We are very grateful to member Lynn Herbert, who is paying to have the firm of Knife River prepare a drainage study and plan to be submitted to the Executive Board for their consideration with options available, along with the costs for these Proposed Improvements. Lynn, who owns Herbert Lumber Co., has previously donated most of the lumber used in the construction of the 50 yd Range Structure. Lynn had met with Rick Bitrich,V.P. and Dennis Blanchard, Chief Range Safety Officer, and made the offer to provide the study & improvement plans after seeing our swimming hole at the proposed Cowboy Action/Defensive Pistol Range, and the status of the 100 & 50 yd ranges. These improvements cost money and need to be limited to necessary projects, for the most bang for the dollar, and necessity to allow member access to targets located within the various ranges. We hope to have some good news about this issue in our April Newsletter, after the Executive Board reviews the proposed options and costs. 2

3 BOWLING PIN SHOOT ON FEBRUARY 19TH (SNOWING) We had 2 shooters turn out for this shoot. It was snowing and cold, Bill Hagan then said he would hold a shoot at NO COST for the brave shooters that would endure the severe weather. A few shooters showed-up later and were given this FREE RIDE. The Bowling Pin Shoot involved both a handgun & and AR-15 Rifle. Our Thanks go to John Love, who donated $5 to the club, and has been very supportive of our Club events. Remember that Defensive Pistol Shoots will resume in March 12th, COWBOY ACTION SHOOT ON FEBRUARY 20TH: The Cowboy Action Shooting event turnout was limited by the cold weather. We are holding 5 stages for this event at an entry fee of $10 per person. 1st Place ribbons were awarded to the winners, next month awards will be certificates. The Club made $50 on this event. These may be increased or decreased, by posting a revised listing, which will go into effect the following month. 4 UPCOMING EVENTS FOR MARCH: MARCH 12TH - SATURDAY - YOUTH HUNTER SAFETY SIGN-UP: 12PM - 3PM AT THE RIDDLE FIRE STATION (SEE NEXT PAGE) MARCH 12TH - SATURDAY - DEFENSIVE PISTOL SHOOT (9AM - 1PM) 3 STRINGS, COST $5; SHOOT AS MANY STRINGS AS TIME ALLOWS $10 MARCH 13TH SUNDAY - COWBOY ACTION SHOOT (9AM - 1PM) 5 STAGES, COST $10 MARCH 19TH - SATURDAY - RIM FIRE RIFLE FUN SHOOT (9AM - 1PM) 3 STAGES, COST $5 MARCH 12TH - SATURDAY - DEFENSIVE PISTOL SHOOT (9 AM - 1 PM): The popular Defensive Pistol Shoot is returning on March 12th, shooters will be presented with three scenarios that are designed to simulate defensive situations you might encounter. This is not a competition but a fun filled training adventure. Targets will be cardboard silhouettes with an occasional steel or reactive target thrown in. Weapons are restricted to 9mm or larger caliber handguns that must be worn in a hip holster. Extra magazines, clips or speed loaders as well as lots of ammo are highly recommended. Check-in time is 9 am and the shoot will start shortly thereafter. The fee for the shoot is $5 for three scenarios or for $10 the shooter may re-shoot a scenario (s) as many times as they wish until the shoot ends at 1 pm. Eye & Ear protection is mandatory. MARCH 13TH - COWBOY ACTION SHOOT (9 AM - 1 PM): This Shoot is the 3rd Cowboy Action Shoot for 2011, and will include earning Special Award Points toward a tooled leather holster. This will be awarded at the end of 2011, to the Cowboy Action Shooter with the most points earned during the year. Cost for five stages is $10.00 per person. Remember Safety Glasses and Ear Protection is required for observing or while participating in any of our shooting events. MARCH 19TH - RIM FIRE RIFLE FUN SHOOT (9AM - 1PM): By popular request, the South Umpqua Rod & Gun Club is hosting a rim fire rifle fun shoot. The March shoot will feature reactive targets such as steel knock downs, bowling pins, clay pigeons and the like. The shoot will be set-up in three stages. Targets may vary in distance of from yards. Because this is not a competition, any rim fire rifle is permitted. Participants should bring a minimum of 10 rounds of ammunition per stage. Check-in time is 9 am and the shoot will start shortly thereafter. A $5 fee will be charged for the shoot. Many of our members have 22 and/or.17 caliber rifles for plinking, varmints, etc, so this shoot should interest many of you, your spouse and youngsters. Eye and Ear Safety Protection is required, and we have some available, at a minimal cost at the Clubhouse. Remember that spectators will also need this safety protection if close to the shooting. 4

5 NRA BANQUET - SATURDAY, APRIL 30, 2011@ DOUGLAS CO. FAIRGROUNDS: Club has a table for 10 at this event, an we have 2 seats available at the discount price of $35 each. We need to sell both seats, so if interested please call the Club (541) This is a way of showing our Club support of our NRA Foundation Grants as some of the voting members will be at this function. This includes a dinner, Raffle Prizes, and many opportunities to buy chances at drawings for some neat stuff. YOUTH HUNTER SAFETY CLASSES - SIGN-UP MARCH 12TH (12pm-3pm): *Sign-ups for the Youth Hunter Safety Class will be held on March 12th, between 12 pm 3 pm at the Riddle Fire Station. *The classes are being held at the Riddle Fire Station on the 14th - 18th of March, at 6 pm - 8 pm each day during these week-long classes. *The Field Day & Test Day will be begin at the Riddle Fire Station at 8 am on Saturday, March 19th., we will then go to the South Umpqua Rod & Gun Club for the shooting and return to the Fire Station for test. These classes are taught by Douglas County Hunter Education Instructors and are supported by the members of the NRA and the South Umpqua Rod & Gun Club. The minimum age is 8 years old, and is open to both boy s and girl s. 22 Caliber Rifles are available for the youth and the class is required for anyone aged 17 or under, if you want to obtain a hunting license and learn about gun safety and fun shooting. The classes are limited in size (approx. 18 in class) so make sure that you sign-up on March 12th at the Riddle Fire Station between 12 pm - 3 pm to join this community activity in gun safety taught by Licensed Instructors. Both David Miller and Beverly M. Kruger have been teaching these classes for several years, so you will be receiving the best training available in this area. The South Umpqua Rod & Gun Club is very proud of this program and is happy to join with the Riddle Fire Station, and it s Fire Chief Jimmy Powell in this Supervised Youth Event. If you are interested in becoming a Certified Instructor, contact Dennis Blanchard. CLUB MASTER PLAN FOR OUR FUTURE PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT: The Executive Board is currently preparing a proposed Master Plan for our Club Property, so we can expand our services to the membership. Consideration will be given to Skeet & Trap shooting, Archery, Patio & Picnic Table areas and other features that will encourage family participation in many of our activities. We are also looking at possible ways to finance these improvements without increased dues to the members, holding shooting events, Club Raffle s and other fund raisers that the members can help & support, while having fun doing so and helping the Club. The Proposed Master Plan will be submitted to the membership, after they are prepared, and the members are encouraged to review, suggest & finally vote & approve the Plan. The date of the meeting to discuss the future of the Club property, will be announced. 5
