1 SOUTH UMPQUA ROD AND GUN CLUB A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. 845 Rod and Gun Club Road Riddle, Oregon Mailing Address: P.O. Box 639 Canyonville, Oregon Range Status Phone: (541) Website: Newsletter for May 2011 NEXT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING IS SUNDAY, May 1, 2011 at 2:00 pm AT 2:00 P.M. AT THE CLUBHOUSE VISUALIZATION: BY: DENNIS BLANCHARD CHIEF RANGE SAFETY OFFICER, NRA INSTRUCTOR: When we say the word Visualization what are we talking about? Visualization is the formation of a mental image of a situation or activity. It is a powerful tool that has been used to improve performance in sports, business and many other aspects of life. Visualization should be used to imagine different defensive scenarios in and around the home: *What if a strange person suddenly appears at a window? *What if I hear someone attempting to force the lock on my back door? *What if a stranger at my door suddenly produces a knife, club or gun and demands entry into my home? *What if I find my front door unlocked and open when I arrive home? Visualizing these and similar scenarios gives you a dry run of such situations, and helps reduce the surprise factor should any of the visualized situations actually take place. Through visualization, you will better anticipate potential sources of danger in the environment, and devise practical plans to deal with the situation. In your range training visualize your target as a criminal who is threatening your life or the lives of your loved ones. This type of training will help to mentally prepare you and build your confidence. Next time we will talk about Defensive Shooting Concepts. thank you for your time. REMEMBER TO KEEP YOUR POWDER DRY. 1

2 CHANGES ARE OCCURING AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE GROUNDS: You will notice several changes around the Clubhouse as we move forward to make the access available for wheelchairs and for the handicapped shooters and spectators. Chain type fences have been installed along the bank between the Clubhouse and the lower area. New steps have been built for access to this lower area (50 yd. range and Patio area) as we try to expand the facilities for family and create fun times to be together and share in the Club shooting events and programs 2 SETS OF AUDITORIUM STYLE SEATS ARE STILL FOR SALE FROM CLUB: Danielle Raines bought one set of the auditorium type seats (4 seats in a mounted set) for $ This allowed the Club to purchase 3 new folding chairs, which are currently being used at the Club. If anyone is interested, we are selling the remaining two sets of seats for $60.00 each. These would be excellent to use as teaching aids, and can be mounted onto the floor at a fixed location. STATUS OF REPLACING THE EXISTING PISTOL STRUCTURE BUILDING: A BIG THANKS TO LYNN HERBERT for his donation of much of the lumber for the new pistol range structure. We also want to thank BRIAN JOHNSON of DR Johnson Lumber Co., whose family donated the 2x4 s for both the ADA Improvements and the Pistol Structure. Thank you very much to the Johnson family. The existing Pistol Building has been torn down by Bill Hagan, and the wood is being recovered for use as Cowboy Action Store Fronts. The grading for this range is awaiting dry weather, as the ground is too wet. A new drainage pipe will be placed under the building and a French Drain System will be installed to provide drainage for this area. The range building will be enclosed on three sides, and will provide a shaded/covered area for both summer and winter. We are planning to install a target retrieval system which was made & donated by member Peter Mills-Price. See page 8 for photo. 9 Treasurers Corner: This month has seen some improvement in our finances. On the weekend of April 9-10 we realized $ from the Defensive Pistol and Cowboy shoots. The AR shoot on the 16th. brought in $10.00 (OK for our first AR shoot) Hope to see more of you next month. Our drainage fund raiser is progressing. We have a total of 9 new chairs donated, and one table, ($240.00) with $50.00 added to the coffers. Plus, we have sold many (considering the early date) raffle tickets for the Marlin rifle, realizing $ so far. This just about pays for the rifle. ($ cost). Our non-member range fees for the month totaled $ Most of the wood needed to build the new pistol range building has been donated. We would like to recognize Lynn Herbert, of Herbert Lumber, and Brian Johnson, and the Johnson Family of D.R. Johnson Lumber, for their generous donations. We are making good progress on the new stairs from the clubhouse to the ranges. Please be careful when using it, as the potential for hand splinters is very high at this time. When completed it will be a safe and easy path to the 50, and 100 yd. shooting buildings. It will also comply with A.D.A. requirements. Respectfully Submitted, William Regina Treasurer Progress on new steps to ranges. 9
