2 Epee Leon Paul Blades Not Permitted: Leon Paul SR-71 V blades carrying dates from 2013 to 2015 inclusive Leon Paul FIE V blades dated 2015 and not carrying a serial number Permitted: Conventional FIE epee blades branded as Leon Paul but made by other manufacturers (e.g. BF) Leon Paul FIE V blades carrying dates other than 2015 Leon Paul FIE V blades dated 2015 but carrying a serial number Other blade checks All Edges Blades must be free of burrs and sharp edges that could injure a fencer or damage clothing. All Integrity Blades must be free of obvious rust, fractures, deformities or unusual kinks Sabre Rust Sabre blades should be particularly closely examined for rust as this will reduce the conductivity of the blade-lame connection Sabre Tip Button ( fold over ) on tip must be intact Foil Insulation The tips of foil blades must be insulated from behind the point for a minimum distance of 15 cm Foil/Epee Point wires Point wires must be glued in place and not protruding outside their grooves Absence of substantial guard defects Small dents are OK, dents that could cause a point to catch are not allowed. Deformities that substantially alter the shape of the guard are not allowed. Sharp or burred edges that could cut a fencer are not allowed. Rust is not allowed, nor is anything else that could prevent grounding of the guard (e.g. tape). Where there is a central reinforcement of the guard this must be firmly secured to the guard (e.g. no missing rivets). 2

3 Correct wiring, pad (foil, epee) Wiring must be fully sheathed within the guard up to the connections, and wires must not protrude beyond the connections. Epee wires must be separately insulated. Wires must not be obscured by opaque tape but may pass through channels in the socket designed for that purpose. A pad must be in place to protect wires. Wires must be placed to protect them from disconnection in use. Insulated grip (foil) Grip and pommel insulated or at least projecting points of pistol grip. Insulated grip and guard (sabre) Insulation is required on lower part of guard and pommel. 3

5 Alligator clip line must run separately for at least 40cm (foil/sabre) 40cm Masks FIE notation FIE notation is required, including on removable bibs. Restraint systems All masks must have two restraint systems: either: o Traditional tongue/clasp plus elastic strap; or o Leon Paul Contour-Fit Plus system including rear disc on elastic strap, plus secondary strap and bib loops. Rear strap or tongue/clasp must be intact and not loose. Leon Paul Contour-Fit masks must be fitted with the Contour-Fit Plus strap system or similar - substitute straps are permitted but must not be attached using rivets through the mask mesh. Elastic must be good condition and not loose. Velcro must be working with stitching holding it down. Where a fencer presents multiple Leon Paul Contour-Fit masks or bibs at the same time, the masks or bibs can be passed and stamped as long as a Contour-Fit Plus strap is attached to at least one of the masks and the masks or bibs are all fitted with the hoops for attaching the strap. 5

6 Condition No holes in mesh. No rust or oxidisation No signs of damage to or separation of wire mesh. Minor dents are permissible, but no places where blade could catch. No visor masks are permitted for any weapon. Masks may be painted with flags or other designs. Foil and epee masks require insulated mesh; sabre masks require conductive mesh. Conductivity Conductivity test required on sabre masks and foil masks/bibs. 10 ohms resistance maximum, especially in stitching ribs. Lames, gloves and cuffs No holes 6

7 Conductivity 5 ohms maximum resistance between each point, though small areas on collar and back, not exceeding approx. 5x5cm, may have a resistance of up to 10 ohms. 500 g test weight All gloves No holes All gloves must pass through weapon check and receive a stamp, not just sabre gloves Gloves must be free from holes No body wire hole is permitted Velcro must go right up to the end of the glove opening without leaving a hole for the body wire Gloves where such a hole existed may be accepted only if the hole is tightly and soundly stitched up Sabre gloves and cuffs 800 N FIE gloves are required for sabre. Cuffs are permitted to be used in conjunction with an FIE glove, even where that glove is not a sabre glove. In such cases, both glove and cuff must be checked and stamped. Where an FIE sabre glove fails the conductivity test but is otherwise sound it may still be stamped but the lame area of the glove must be prominently and permanently marked (with the owner s permission) with NC in large letters on both sides of the glove. If the owner does not want the glove marked in this way it must not be passed and stamped. FIE notation 7
