Huddersfield School of TKD Johnnie Chan Vth Dan ITF & UKTA registered instructor Tel: Mobile: E Mail: Huddersfield.tkd@gmail.com General Introduction to Taekwon-Do Taekwon-Do was developed from a version of an ancient form of unarmed combat practised for many centuries in Korea. It became perfected to its present form by General Choi Hong Hi, who was for many years head of the unarmed combat division of the Republic of Korea Armed Forces. It has been scientifically developed and modernised by the ITF since its first introduction to the world on 11 th April Translated from the Korean Tae means to jump, kick or smash with the foot. Kwon means to punch, strike or smash with the fist. Do means art, method, or way. In short it is the most powerful system of self-defence ever devised. To the Korean people Taekwon-Do is more than a mere use of skilled movements. It also implies a way of life with a strong sway toward the more philosophical side, particularly in instilling a concept and spirit of self-imposed discipline and an ideal of noble moral re-armament. In these days of violence and intimidation which plague our modern society, Taekwon-Do enables the weak to possess a fine weapon with which to defend themselves. However, when wrongly applied, it can also be very dangerous. INTERNATIONAL TAEKWON-DO OATH I shall observe the tenets of Taekwon-Do. I shall respect the Instructors and Seniors. I shall never misuse Taekwon-Do. I shall be a champion of freedom and justice. I shall build a more peaceful world. General Choi Hong Hi Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha CONDUCT IN THE DOJANG Bow upon entering and leaving the Dojang at all times. Bow to the Instructor at a proper distance. Exchange greetings between students. Bow to the instructor upon forming a line. Recite the International Taekwon-Do Oath prior to training. Bow to the Instructor prior to dismissal. Always address Instructors and black belts as Sir. Do not eat, drink, or smoke whilst wearing your dobok unless prior permission to do so has been granted by the Instructor. Do not speak unnecessarily before or during a session. Always hand objects to the Instructor with both hands. 13/12/10

TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 9 th KUP What is a pattern? A pattern is a series of attacking and defensive movements designed to combat one or more imaginary opponents. Chon-Ji (19 movements): Means literally, The heaven, the earth. It is in the Orient interpreted as the creation of the world or the beginning of human history, therefore it is the initial pattern performed by the beginner. The pattern consists of two similar parts one to represent the heaven, the other, the earth. Niunja Sogi L-stance An Makgi Inside Block Annuro Makgi Inward Block Bakat Makgi Outside Block Bakurro Makgi Outward Block Ap Kumchi Front sole Tul Pattern Balkal Footsword Wen Left Orun Right Nagagi Forward Duruogi Backward Ap Cha Busigi Front snap kick Doo Jirugi Double punch Yop Cha Jirugi Side piercing kick Chookyo Makgi Bakat Palmok Najunde Makgi An Palmok Kaunde Makgi Rising block Outer forearm low block Inner forearm middle block Sparring: Sambo Matsoki Three-step sparring (Attacker in walking stance, defender in parallel stance) When in L-stance (Niunja Sogi), the weight must be distributed 70% on the rear foot and 30% on the front foot. Toes should be degrees forward & inward. Front sole (Ap Kumchi) is used for front kick and turning kick. Footsword (Balkal) is used for side piercing kick and back piercing kick. The last two movements of pattern Chon-Ji are obverse punch (Barro Jirugi). The two blocks used in Chon-Ji are outer forearm low block in walking stance (Gunnon So Bakat Palmok Najunde Makgi) and inner forearm middle block in L-stance (Niunja So An Palmok Kaunde Makgi). Yellow belt signifies the earth, from which a plant sprouts and takes root as the Taekwon-Do foundation is laid. There are 24 patterns in Taekwon-Do which symbolises 24 hours, or one day, or all of General Choi s life which he has dedicated to the art. Inside block (An makgi) is ANY block to the inside of your opponent s attacking tool. Inwards block (Annuro makgi) is ANY block travelling inwards across your own body. Outside block (Bakat makgi) is ANY block to the outside of your opponent s attacking tool. Outward block (Bakurro makgi) is ANY block travelling outwards across your own body.

TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 8 th KUP Dan-Gun (21 movements): Dan-Gun is named after the Holy Dan-Gun, the legendary founder of Korea in the year 2333 BC. Ap Kumchi Balkal Dwit Chook Sonkal Sonkal Dung Front sole - is used for front kick and turning kick. Footsword - is used for side piercing kick and back piercing kick. Back heel - is used for reverse turning kick. Knifehand Reverse knifehand Bandae Dollyo Chagi Dollyo Chagi Nopunde Ap Jirugi Sonkal Yop Taerigi Yop Cha Jirugi Reverse turning kick Turning kick High front punch Knifehand side strike Side piercing kick Chookyo Makgi Sang Palmok Makgi Sonkal Daebi Makgi Rising block in walking stance Twin forearm block in L-Stance Knifehand guarding block in L-Stance Sparring: Ban Jayoo Matsoki Semi-free sparring - (Both attacker & defender start in L-stance) Jayoo Matsoki Free sparring - (Both attacker & defender start in L-stance) Sambo Matsoki Three-step sparring - (Attacker in walking stance defender in parallel stance) Commands: Hechyo Gaesok Jeuii Kamjom Silkyok Break/Separate Continue Warning Demerit/Minus point Disqualification Rising block is classified as a front block, so it must be performed full facing. Front block (Ap Makgi) is when the blocking tool finishes at the centre line & the body is full facing. When performing rising block, the fist must be over the opposite shoulder. Three-step sparring may be practised using the same three of ANY attack. Remember not to perform the high punch when returning to Chon-Ji. Side block is when the body is kept half-facing whilst blocking. Dan-Gun movements 13 & 14 are performed in continuous motion Yonsok Dong Jak The 4 defensive movements in pattern Dan-Gun are: (1) Sonkal Daebi Kaunde Makgi in niunja sogi, (2) Sang Palmok Makgi in niunja sogi, (3) Bakat Palmok Najunde Makgi in gunnon sogi, and (4) Chookyo Makgi in gunnon sogi.

TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 7 th KUP Do-San (24 movements): Do-San is the pseudonym of the patriot Ahn-Chang-Ho ( ). The 24 movements represent his entire life, which he dedicated to furthering the education of the Korean people and to its independence movement. Dung Joomuk Sonkut Backfist Fingertips Dung Joomuk Taerigi Sun Sonkut Tulgi Backfist strike Straight fingertip thrust Nopunde Hechyo Makgi High Wedging Block (Using bakat palmok) Chagi Euhke son Gassum son Japyosul Tae Makgi Myong chi son Sogi Taerigi Tulgi Weeryok Barun Dong Jak Yonsok Dong Jak Kick Shoulder line Chest line Release from grab Block Centre line (Solar plexus line) Stance Strike Thrust Power Fast Motion Continuous Motion Green belt signifies the plant s growth as the Taekwon-Do skills begin to develop. Fast Motion (Barun Dong Jak) is when two or more moves are performed with a shorter time frame between the moves, each using it s own breath (As in front kick, obverse & reverse punch). Continuous movement (Yonsok Dong Jak) means performing two or more moves without stopping, with each move having it s own breath as in Dan Gun moves 13 & 14.

TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 6 th KUP Won-Hyo (28 movements): Won-Hyo was the noted monk who introduced Buddhism to the Silla Dynasty in the year 686 ad. Gojung Sogi Goburyo Sogi A Moa Sogi Moa Junbi Sogi A Fixed stance Bending stance A Close stance Close ready stance A Hands level with your philtrum Baldung Balkut Bokboo Chiboo Mori Myong Chi Instep Toes Abdomen Pubic region Head Solar plexus Dwit Cha Jirugi Sonkal Annuro Taerigi Yop Jirugi Back piercing kick Knifehand inward strike Side punch Dollimyo Makgi Palmok Daebi Makgi Circular block Forearm guarding block Sparring: Ibo Matsoki Two-step sparring. 7 TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 5 th KUP Yul-gok (38 movements): Yul-gok is the pseudonym of a great philosopher and scholar Yi l ( ), nicknamed The Confuscious of Korea. The 38 movements of the pattern represent his birthplace in the 38º latitude and the diagram represents ( ) Scholar. Guburyo Sogi B Kyocha Sogi Bending stance B (Looking toward the rear) X-stance Ap Palkup Son Badak Yop Bal Badak Front elbow Palm Side Sole (Used for stamping motion) Ap Palkup Taerigi Front elbow strike Doo Palmok Makgi Golcho Makgi Sang Sonkal Makgi Double forearm block Hooking block Twin knifehand block Sparring: Ilbo Matsoki Euijin Dong Jak Phiagi Mikulgi Gwanja nori Yop tok One-step sparring (Attacker & defender start in parallel stance) Connecting Motion Dodging Sliding Temple Jaw Continuous movement (Yonsok Dong Jak) means performing two or more moves without stopping, with each move having it s own breath as in Dan Gun moves 13 & 14. Connecting movement ( Euijin Dong Jak) means using one breathe for two movements, as in pattern Yul-Gok movement numbers 16 & 17, and 19 & 20. Blue belt signifies the heaven, toward which the plant develops into a towering tree as training in Taekwon-Do progressses. Son badak (the palm) is used for Golcho Makgi (hooking block). When performing Sang sonkal Makgi, the knifehand rising block must be over the centre line. When in Kyocha Sogi (X-stance) both feet must point in the same direction.

TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 4 th KUP Joong Gun (32 movements): Joong Gun is named after the patriot Ahn Joong Gun, who assassinated Hiro-Bumi Ito, the first JAPANESE Governor General of Korea, known as the man who played the leading part in the Korea-Japan merger. There are 32 movements in this pattern to represent Mr. Ahn s age when he was executed at Lui-Shung prison in Dwitbal Sogi Moa Junbi Sogi B Nachau Sogi Rear foot stance Close ready stance B (Level with your navel) Low stance Ap Palkup Bandal Son Son Badak Sonkal Dung Front elbow Arc hand Palm Reverse knifehand Giokja Jirugi Dollyo Jirugi Sang Dwijibo Jirugi Sang Sewo Jirugi Wi Palkup Taerigi Yobap Cha Busigi Angle punch (Fist finishes on the chest line) Turning punch (Fist finishes on the solar plexus line) Twin upset punch (Used on two opponents) Twin vertical punch (Used on a single opponent) Upper elbow strike (Performed reverse only) Side front snap kick Degutcha Makgi Kyocha Joomuk Chookyo Makgi Son Badak Noolo Makgi Son Badak Ollyo Makgi Sonkal Dung Kaunde Makgi U-shape block X-fist rising block Palm pressing block Palm upwards block Reverse knifehand middle block Sparring: Idil Matsoki Two versus one sparring Neurin Dong Jak Slow Motion (Count to 4) Mikulgi Sliding Twimyo Flying Twiggi Jumping When performing angle punch (Giokja Jirugi) the fist finishes on the chest line. Do not confuse with Turning Punch (Dollyo Jirugi) which finishes on the centre line. Arc hand (Bandal Son) is used for U-shape block.

TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 3 rd KUP Toi Gye (37 movements): Toi Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16 th century), an authority on neo-confuscianism. The 37 movements of the pattern represent his birthplace on the 37 latitude, and the diagram ( ) represents Scholar. Dwijibun Sonkut Tulgi Ollyo Chagi Naeryo Chagi Opun Sonkut Tulgi Homi Sonkut Tulgi Upset fingertip thrust Upward kick (Using the knee) Downward kick Flat fingertip thrust Angle fingertip thrust Doo Palmok Miro Makgi Kyocha Joomuk Noolo Makgi Najunde Sonkal Daebi Makgi San Makgi Double forearm pushing block X-fist pressing block Low knifehand guarding block W-shape block Red belt signifies danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and warning the opponent to stay away. Saju Tulgi Four-directional thrust. This is NOT a pattern, but this exercise was formerly practised by the 3 rd kup holder and above. When performing San Makgi (W-shape block) you must look toward the direction you are travelling, e.g., when moving the left foot, look left. The student should by now have a wide-ranging knowledge of the vital spots and be able to name most in terminology. Chari Chari Dong Jak Consecutive Motion. This is when the same hand or foot is used to perform two or more techniques in different directions or with different attacking tools.

TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 2 nd KUP Hwa-Rang (29 movements): Hwa-Rang is named after the Hwa-Rang youth group which originated in the Silla Dynasty in the early 7 th century. The 29 movements refer to the 29 th Infantry Division, where Taekwon-Do developed into maturity. Moa Junbi Sogi C Soojik Sogi Waebal Sogi Close ready stance C Hands level with your pubic region Vertical stance One-legged stance (Not yet used in Tul) Hori Pyun Joomuk Yop Joomuk Waist Open fist Side fist Bandae Dollyo Goro Chagi Bituro Chagi Cha Bapgi Niunja So Baro Jirugi Naeryo Chagi Ollyo Jirugi Sonkal Naeryo Taerigi Yop Palkup Tulgi Reverse hooking kick Twisting kick Stamping kick L-stance obverse punch Downward kick Upward punch Knifehand downward strike Side elbow thrust Bandal Chagi Cha Momchugi Kaunde Yobap Makgi Noolo Chagi Son Badak Miro Makgi Crescent kick Checking kick Inner forearm side front middle block Pressing kick Palm pushing block When performing Bandal Chagi (crescent kick), the leg must be kept bent. You need to be able to demonstrate all 13 stances so far learnt. You need to be able to demonstrate the many different uses of Ap Joomuk, i.e., as many types of punch as possible using only the fore fist. When performing Idil Matsoki (2 versus 1 sparring) an emphasis must be placed on safety. This will involve keeping both opponents in a straight line for as long as possible and not exposing yourself to danger. Try to defend by blocking one opponent into the path of the other.

TERMINOLOGY APPLICABLE TO 1 st KUP Choong-Moo (30 movements): Was the name given to the great Admiral Yi-Soon-Sin of the Yi Dynasty. He was reputed to have invented the first armoured battleship (Kobukson) in 1592, which is said to be the precursor of the present day submarine. The reason why this pattern ends with a left hand attack is to symbolise his regrettable death, having no chance to show his unrestrained potentiality checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the king. Dwitcha Jirugi Nopunde Sonkal Ap Taerigi Twimyo Yopcha Jirugi Back piercing kick High knifehand front strike Flying side piercing kick Doo Son Badak Ollyo Makgi Kyocha Sonkal Momchau Makgi Twin palm upward block X-knifehand checking block There are 24 patterns in Taekwon-Do. The reason for this is as follows: Here I leave Taekwon-Do for mankind as a trace of man of the late 20 th century. The 24 patterns represent 24 hours, one day, or all my life. - General Choi Hong Hi (IX) Black belt - is the opposite of white, therefore signifying the wearer s maturity & proficiency in Taekwon-Do. It also indicates the wearer s imperviousness to darkness & fear.
