3 Question / Answer Mataw-Guro Association Defensive action is the strategy to avoid being struck. This is the term preferred over the most common term used, which is block. The term block has a negative connotation. Literally, it means to stop the attack. It is a highly illogical method of defense because it suggests attempting to stop force with force. If you block using force against force, the greater force will prevail. There are several methods to avoid being struck. Stepping back to get out of the range of the attack is the most natural reflex action. However, stepping back out of the range of teh attack is devoid of logic since it also gets an individual out of range for an effective counter-attack. The better choice is evasion by stepping in, stepping to the side or simple body-shifting which will take you to an effective counter-attack range at the same time prevent you from being hit. Two other ways of avoiding being struck are by deflecting the strike or by checking before the strike. Question: 1. Deflecting the strike is an action taken after your opponent has delivered his blow. What is deflecting the strike mean? And give an example. 2. Checking is a very effective and more assertive and progressive method of defense. What is the purpose and what is accomplished in checking? And what are the most common targets of checking techniques? Individual Mataw-Guro Answers Deflecting the strike is an action taken after your opponent has delivered his blow. To deflect the strike does not mean attempting to stop the blow but to redirect the motion of the blow away from you. This can be accomplished with a small circle strike or a tangent strike. The action of the circular strike redirects the motion of the force of the attack. To better understand this concept, you need to think in mechanical terms. The rotational motion of the drive shaft of the automobile is converted to a forward or backward motion of the wheels through the axle by the gears in the differential case. When your opponent is already committed in his strike you redirect the blow by a circular strike on your opponent s stick as you shift your body by stepping to the sides or inwards, changing your stance, or by simple weight transfer. Checking is a first strike tactic that is a defensive strike strategy to prevent the opponent from launching an attack. When the opponent thinks of attacking, you check the hand, shoulders, or the hips, depending on what you perceive will be the attack. Checking is not practical for contests and tournaments and may even be considered foul techniques. However, for self-defense, it is a higher and more effective form of defensive action. Most, if not all targets of checking techniques, are delivered on parts of the body to prevent the opponent from being able to deliver a strike. The most common targets of checking techniques are the wrists just below the base of the thumb so the opponent will drop the stick and will not be able to hold a weapon and the clavicle (to break it) so the opponent will not be able to raise his arm. The most common target of the tip of the stick is the armpit. An injury to the armpit causes weakness and chest pains that affect the breathing. The most common target of the butt of the stick is the hollow area of the clavicle also known as shoulder well. An injury to this area impedes the flow of blood to the brain and may result in going in and out of consciousness. It is possible to pierce the heart through the shoulder well by using a long knife. Hitting the armpit or the shoulder well will prevent the opponent from raising the hand to strike. Mataw-Guro Andy Sanano

4 The question that you have posed is a very good question but it leave out one addition option. The option that you have left out is a defensive counter strike. Let me illustrate what I mean by a defensive counter strike. Suppose your opponent strikes at you with a forehand as defined by Mataw- Guro Lou and yourself. You can deflect/redirect the strike using your stick or you can check the hand by guiding your opponents The Lowly Block Mataw Guro Andy Sanano wrote, Defensive action is the strategy to avoid being struck. This is the term preferred over the most common term used, which is block. The term block has a negative connotation. That is true. Because of the concept of defanging the snake ( defensive counterstrike in Michael Henderson s vocabulary), some very high-level FMA practitioners have come to disdain the block and say that no such thing exists in FMA. Poor block Well, I m often for the underdog, so I ll come to the defense of the lowly block. Despite pre-emptive strikes, evasion, defangs, checks and parries, all of which are generally preferable to the block, the block still has worth, not just in defense but surprisingly in offense. It can actually aid/assist/facilitate an attack! Time to think out of the box but first, let s see what s going on with it (the block, not the box) now in the modern McDojo world Blocking in Empty Hand All too often, today and in the past half-century at least, a block is viewed as just a block, in a direction as to avoid getting hit. Now with a defensive counter strike as your opponent strikes with a forehand you can counter strike your opponents wrist or elbow with a forehand of your own thus neutralizing your opponents attack and possibly ending the fight if you are able to injure the wrist or elbow. Another option would be to use a backhand strike again as defined by you and Mataw-Guro Lou. While option one and two are especially in the empty hand arts, regardless of country of origin. It has lost its offensive component. However, if you look at how we do empty hand blocks with closed fist or open hand, you can see what s possible. For example: The closed fist block is not just a block. It s a hammer fist strike on one side and a dim mak strike on the other. The open hand block is not just a block. It s a knife hand strike on one side and a ridge hand strike on the other. As soon as the block is made, it can also instantly morph into a snake hand. Starting to sound like kung fu? Yes, but it s in all other arts. Sometimes it s lost and waiting to be rediscovered. One Filipino martial art that really emphasizes the snake hand is Bais Tres Manos, the first FMA system I practiced. The C-Hand check/block is not just purely defensive. It s also a strike by itself, capable of instantly morphing into a claw hand, grab, or choke. I remember Serrada master, Jeffrey Stickman Finder mentioning a Chinese manuscript that referred to this type of C-Hand good options for avoid injury option three if delivered and timed properly will allow you to end the fight with minimal damage and in a short amount of time. When it come to any fight, you do not want to engage your opponent any longer than is necessary. Mataw-Guro Michael Henderson (where you re striking with a bony portion of the hand at the same time you check) as the Filipino Hand. I don t know anything more about that document. You ll have to ask Jeff. The Block in Kicking In kicking, at least in the United States, until Muay Thai made its debut there, whoever thought about using one s shin to block a roundhouse kick?? I started conditioning my shin Muay Thai-style until I felt I could kick a tree without consequence. I couldn t. I never expected to break the tree; I just didn t expect to feel such pain! I collapsed, thinking I broke my leg. Stupid. But I learned from it. One time, while doing some solo baston sparring, my partner threw a roundhouse kick. Instead of evading or parrying, I simply lifted my leg and met his shin with mine. My shin block was purely defensive. Or was it? My partner collapsed in pain. End of sparring session. I wasn t necessarily bigger or stronger than my partner. My shin was just more conditioned. I guess in that sense, I was stronger. The point is, the lowly block is still useful. By now, we ve all seen

5 Japanese and Korean masters breaking baseball bats with their conditioned forearms! Amazing! Blocking with Weapons Okay, so what about when sparring/fighting with weapons? I like all the other ways we defend against strikes (pre-emptive strikes, evasion, checking, and parrying, and especially defanging) but I also still like the block. Call me a block head Of course, I will not just block. My opponent s weapon will feel no pain. Stating the obvious, if all you do is evade, block, check, and parry, you will eventually be struck. The modern military saying is, Cover withers under fire. That is why defanging is the defensive action of choice among experienced FMA practitioners it is offensive at the same time. It can end the encounter instantly. Time to think out of the box. When fighting with stick or blade, the lowly, disdained defensive only block, can actually facilitate offense. Want to strike and increase your chance of success? Simple. Bait your opponent into striking you and use an augmented block. Instantly after impact, launch your attack with your augmenting hand. I learned this from my first teacher, Grand Maestro Jon Bais. His art was called Kuntaw Kali-Silat at the time. It s now called Bais Tres Manos. Want to end the encounter with a thrust? Simple. Let your opponent launch his strike, forehand or backhand, (or thrust, it doesn t really matter). The instant after the block (parry in the case of the thrust), thrust him. Because of hand position, stance, and range, It s already there. as my second teacher, the late Great Grandmaster Ernesto Presas, Sr. was fond of saying. Don t want to kill your opponent? ( All life is precious ) Just want to disarm or control him? Simple. Let your opponent launch his strike, any strike. Block-and-counter with a disarm, lock, takedown, or throw. It s all there in the art of my third teacher Grandmaster Ver Villasin. In fact, in any well thought-out system, it s all there everywhere you look. You just have to learn to see. Caution re letting (baiting) your opponent to strike you: Don t get cocky. Grand Maestro Jon Bais father would tell him, and in turn, Grand Maestro Jon would frequently remind us, his students, to Never underestimate your opponent. If your opponent strikes you once, do not allow him to strike you again. I really took that to heart and it has become the first guiding principle in the development of my own personal art. My second guiding principle is from my second teacher, Great Grandmaster Ernesto Presas, Sr. It s already there. Three words yet so profound. It is because of Great Grandmaster Ernesto and because I took his oft-repeated saying to heart, that I learned to see the invisible. My third guiding principle, not just in martial arts but also in life, is from my third FMA teacher, Grandmaster Veraqui Ver Villasin. Like Grand Maestro Jon s saying, Grandmaster Ver s saying was passed down to him by his father and teacher, Great Grandmaster Jose Villasin: Good manners and right conduct. Take only what s given you. Words to live by in conflict and in peace! In H2H combat, do not overextend to force a disarm, a lock, a takedown, or a throw. Wait until you see the opportunity given you by your opponent. This requires seeing. Learn to see. I do not claim anything as originating from me. I simply had the good fortune to receive the skills and wisdom of our forefathers, passed down from father to son, from teacher to student, from generation to generation, from mandirigma to mandirigma. This is the warrior s legacy. This is Pamanang Mandirigma. Mataw-Guro Alex(ander Bautista Bayot France) 1. You can parry with the tip of the stick and parry their weapon out of line with your body. You can parry with the blade portion of the stick and counter strike rapidly. You can sweep block the strike out of the way and counter strike. You can strike block and deflect their strike out of the way and then counter strike. These are some of the methods that come to mind. 2. A check is to disrupt the flow of energy for a moment and the set it up for the counter move, a hand check is done softly like catching an egg or light bulb. You can stick check which is stick to stick breaking the flow of energy and re-angling it. Checks can be done by themselves like in checking and counter strike. Or be in combo like

6 check and passing, checking and jamming, checking and spreading, checking and pulling and more. Targets for hand checking are the the stick, the hand, the forearm and the elbow. You can knuckle check which is a check and punch downward. You can forearm check to their forearm this is hard check to check and pass. You can check, jab and clear using your elbow and forearm this done at close range followed up with a punch, Punite Team Featuring: Mataw-Guro Oliver Punite Garduce 3 in 1 Seminar on Arnis - Kali - Eskrima April 27, 2013 TKMT [Yong/Davisville] 1992 Yonge St. Toronto, Ontario, Canada It was quite a success. A thank you goes out to the Punite family and friends for their continued support. We are hoping to reach more martial artists of different styles and do sharing of knowledge and skills for the betterment of the Filipino martial arts. Pugay! Checking can also be done at close quarters by using your hip or shoulders into theirs like is done in hockey, that check is not soft but hard like a bump to break their balance. 7 Teaching and Learning the ABECEDARIO Objective: The BALANGKAS NG ABECEDARIO is a compilation of techniques and maneuvers consistent with the principles and laws of motion explained in the handbook Fundamentals of Arnis de Mano. For a more effective teaching and learning of the balangkas, each individual technique must be expounded as to its logical development and relationship with each other. The transition from forehand to backhand, from overhand to underhand, from linear to circular, from pushing to pulling, from turning to twisting, and vice-versa, must be clearly understood. For a better appreciation of Abecedario, the balangkas is presented herein in both regular and reverse orientation. Likewise, possible applications of each maneuver, both in regular and reverse orientations are shown. The applications of techniques are intended as informational and not prescriptive. There is a myriad of applications that may be administered, select the ones that will work best for you. Understand the practical inference that may be derived from each individual technique and their relation with each other. Filipino Martial Art Education Teacher s Training Handbook Fundamentals of Arnis de Mano Objectives: This handbook contains ready reference data for use in planning programs in teaching Filipino martial arts or Arnis de Mano. Although all the lessons in this handbook are also practical for live blades, sword and a knife, other alternative weapons or even empty hands, the main scope is the use of double sticks or doble baston. Use of double sticks is not only encouraged but also mandatory in learning Arnis de Mano in order not to be a one-sided fighter. Filipino Martials Arts is not a means to an end, Filipino Martial Arts is both the Means and the end... Education is a movement from darkness to light, Martial Arts Education is a journey from ignorance to understanding... excerpt from the books FMA Education Teacher s Training Handbook 1. Fundamentals of Arnis de Mano and book 2. Balangkas ng Abecedario. - By Mataw-Guro s Andy Sanano jr. and Louelle Lledo Jr. Filipino Martial Art Education Teacher s Training Handbook Principles of Classical Maneuvers Objectives: The main classical maneuvers (or systems as some schools call them) evolved from the traditional techniques. Presented here are classical maneuvers that are common in most schools or styles. There are other maneuvers but are mostly variations and modifications of these main classical maneuvers but may be called differently. Some schools may call the same maneuver one name when executed from a regular stance and another name when executed from a reverse stance. Some schools may call a maneuver differently when executed with the left hand first than when done with the right hand first. However, whatever the name, flexibility, and adaptability of filipino stick fighting is evident with these classical maneuvers. Each technique may be delivered individually, against a specific target or the classical maneuver may be used in a continuous motion against multiple opponents or to inflict multiple strikes against a single opponent. Whether it is against a single or multiple opponents, each technique has the potential to be fatal.
