Beginners Booklet Christian Black Belt Academy Taekwondo This information booklet is designed to guide you, the new student, through your first few months of training. It will assist you in progressing from a white belt or novice level to your orange belt. The techniques and information included are the basics of Taekwondo and must, therefore, be learned before your first promotion. Most beginning students are out of shape physically. But as you continue to practice, you will feel your balance and coordination improve. Your muscles will become stronger and more flexible enabling you to move faster and kick higher. As you start class, remember that you are not expected to know much more than which side is right or left. Your instructor is fully aware of this and the key to your proficiency is to listen closely to his/her explanations and guidance and then practice, practice, practice. We wish you the best of success in your endeavor, Pastor Troy Stein 6th Degree Black Belt President & Founder Pastor Craig Shaw 6th Degree Black Belt President & Founder -1-

Abishai Style of Taekwondo Christian Black Belt Academies, International was founded in 1996 by Pastor Troy Stein and Pastor Craig Shaw. The founders felt that there was a need for a martial arts organization that keeps its focus on the needs of the students and the development of their character into what God would have for their lives. Pastor Stein and Pastor Shaw continued with the organization with which they were previously affiliated until 2001 when they introduced a new advanced style of Taekwondo entitled, the Abishai Style of Taekwondo. Christian Black Belt Academies, International, maintains its conviction that Traditional Taekwondo training is the heart of each of our continually developing programs. Our desire is to make quality self defense training affordable and convenient to every student that desires to excel as a martial artist. It is with these objectives that we have developed the Abishai Style of Taekwondo. The Vision of Christian Black Belt Academies, International is to train people with practical and traditional techniques of self-defense while developing their moral and spiritual character. CBBA is a Christ-centered martial arts organization that believes in promoting integrity, courtesy, loyalty, respect, perseverance, honor and self-control in every student. The Mission of Taekwondo as it relates to the Abishai Style is a martial art that trains people physically and mentally while emphasizing the need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. The Purpose of Taekwondo is to prepare students for combat situations as the need for self-defense becomes evident. People in our society are protected by laws issued by governments for their protection. In times of trouble we rely on our military and our police to ensure our protection. The need for combat methods used in Taekwondo are not often required for our everyday safety. Therefore, in today s society, Taekwondo is taught as a defensive art, which develops skills in self-protection, physical agility and mental awareness. Introduction -3-

What is Taekwondo? Taekwondo means the Way of the Hand and Foot, but in oriental fashion, it implies more than the physical abilities to smash boards and break bricks with the body s natural weapons. It means a life style of confidence, respect and humility that comes from fitness and defense skills. CBBA International defines Taekwondo as a martial art that trains people both mentally and physically while emphasizing a relationship with Jesus Christ. What is CBBA? CBBA stands for Christian Black Belt Academy, one of the largest Christian martial arts organizations in the world! The presidents and founders of CBA are Pastor Troy Stein, 6th Degree Black Belt and Pastor Craig Shaw, 6th Degree Black Belt. The CBBA was founded in 1996 in Springfield, Missouri. Our East Coast CBBA Office is located in Dacula, GA. Our West Coast CBBA Office is located in Lathrop, CA. What style of Taekwondo are you studying? Abishai Style of Taekwondo. Introduced by Pastor Troy Stein and Pastor Craig Shaw, 2001, in Miami, Florida, to be more progressive and challenging to the Taekwondo student. Abishai translated literally means humility to encourage students to demonstrate humility in all aspects of their lives. As your Taekwondo class begins Sir I will practice with a Christ like attitude, Having courtesy for fellow students, Loyalty for my instructors, And respect for my juniors and seniors... Sir! As your Taekwondo class ends Sir I shall live with perseverance in Christ Jesus, Having honor with others, Integrity within myself, And self-control of my actions,... Sir! Always be respectful to anyone in or around the classroom. When you are in your uniform, you will not behave in any manner that would cast a bad light on our class or CBBA, International. No vulgarities or bad language will be tolerated. About the only way you can fail in your Taekwondo endeavor is to have a bad attitude. Enjoy class time and have fun, and remember to be courteous and respectful to others. Do not, at any time, withhold information from your instructor concerning a personal injury or sickness. We want you healthy so you can enjoy yourself! -4-

Explanation of Terms Common to Taekwondo Definition of Tae Kwon Do (Taekwondo) "Tae" means "foot" or "to strike with the feet". "Kwon" means "hand", or "to strike with the hand". "Do" means discipline, art, or way. Hence TaeKwonDo (foot-hand-way) means literally "the art of the feet and the hands" or "the art of kicking and punching". The definition of Taekwondo as it relates to the Abishai Style is a martial art that trains people physically and mentally while emphasizing the need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Korean Counting There are two different numbering systems that are used by Koreans. The first numbering system is used when counting, or when only speaking of the numbers themselves. The first ten numbers in this system are as follows 1 hanah 2 dool 3 set 4 net 5 dasot 6 yasot 7 ilgop 8 yadol 9 ahop 10 yool The stress in "hanah", "dasot", and "yasot" is on the first syllable, in "ilgop", "yadol", and "ahop" on the second. In counting cadence in TaeKwonDo, this is so emphasized that the other syllable frequently almost disappears (e.g., "han", "das", "yos", "lgop", "hop", etc.). Tenets of TaeKwonDo ye ui courtesy yom chi integrity in nae perseverance kuk gi self-control (also "jah jeh") baekjool indomitable spirit (also "boolgool eui jung shin") Forms poomse form (pronounced "poom-say"), also "hyung" tul patterns

What is a Form? Forms or patterns are attacking and defensive movements which follow a predetermined sequence. Each pattern is actually a simulated self defense scenario designed to enable a person to practice fight with multiple opponents without breaking the technique and balance necessary to deliver effective blows. Although all the forms are different, there are certain basic elements common to all 1. Each form begins and ends in the same place. 2. Forms should be performed with graceful and rhythmic movements 3. Correct stance and facing must be maintained at all times. 4. Muscles should be either tense or relaxed at the proper moments during the course of the form. What is Sparring? A simple definition of sparring is relative action. Sparring is where two partners free fight in a simulated combat situation. There are several types of sparing 1. Testing Sparring Similar to a game of tag where two partners try to demonstrate their skill of technique. Students are considered partners. 2. Tournament Sparring Light contact is allowed to designated areas of the body. The goal is to out-score your opponent. 3. Street Sparring This type of sparring is only done under strict supervision and only after a student has attained the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt. Maximum contact s allowed to designated body areas. Pads should be worn over hands and feet to prevent injuries. Is Stretching Necessary? Yes! The practice of stretching, or limbering up, for a few minutes before every class session is very important. Since Taekwondo utilizes every muscle of the body, it is essential that each muscle be flexible, especially those of the legs and back. Strenuous exercise or high kicking before warming up can lead to soreness and should, therefore, be avoided. It is recommended that you stretch from 10 to 20 minutes before class begins. It will also benefit you to stretch even on the days you do not attend class. Remember, stretching is an important part of your training and will help you to tone up muscles and avoid injuries

Discipline Policy Dear Parents and Students Students at Christian Black Belt Academy are expected at all times to conduct themselves in a manner that will maintain an environment for learning Taekwondo. No student will be allowed to interfere with or repeatedly disrupt the training time of others. It is the responsibility of the parent to teach children to behave properly and courteously toward others. Our goal is to reward good behavior with positive reinforcement. Efforts will be made by the school to avoid critical confrontations. Punishment, if necessary, will be administered by Instructors in accordance with this Discipline Policy and in the spirit of Traditional Taekwondo. Please encourage your children to Honor, Respect and Obey persons charged with the Responsibility of training or supervising them. Students are asked to make the best possible use of our facilities. Discipline and respect for our school can be shown best by caring for our surroundings. Five major rules govern the behavior of CBBA students.
